Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Underground mine mapping is a critical component of understanding the controls on ground instability. Many relatively localized examples of ground failure are associated with geologic features, such as faults, joints, compaction zones, or sedimentological transition zones. In contrast, long-running, directional roof falls are associated with regionally directed horizontal stress fields, which are induced by tectonic plate interactions in the earth?s crust. When stress-related features are distinguished from geological features, underground mapping can be an effective method for inferring the direction of horizontal stress at individual mines. Comparisons with data compiled in the World Stress Map confirm that underground mapping can be a valid method for determining the orientation of maximum principal horizontal stress at a variety of scales, ranging from individual mines to an entire mining district or coal basin. Comparisons are presented between the maximum horizontal stress directions inferred by MSHA?s Roof Control Division through underground mapping and the azimuths of maximum horizontal stress in the World Stress Map database for North America?s Pennsylvanian-aged Appalachian, Illinois, Black Warrior, and Arkoma Basin coal fields. The comparison indicates that azimuths are similar for both data sets, even where variations in the direction of horizontal stress are present. It is interpreted that inconsistencies in direction are attributable to near-surface affects such as deeply incised stream valleys, or to fault zones that represent heterogeneities in the crust.

A method of measuring the degree of contact between grains of 1 phase in multiphase alloys is derived. It is shown that the number and the areas of contacts between grains can be determined by metallographic analysis. Relations between the area of contact, the dihedral angle, and the mean free path of spherical grains are developed. It is often desirable to interpret the mechanical behavior of alloys in terms of structural features observed under the microscope. A quantitative description of microstructures of multi-phase alloys requires consideration of geometrical and topological factors such as the amount, size, and shape of grains and the continuity of the constituent phases. The number and dimensions of grains may be metallographically determined by applying the methods described by Smith and Guttman1 and by Fullman2 in their papers on the measurement of particle size and internal boundaries in opaque bodies. The present work intends to show that the same methods can be used to evaluate some of the parameters of phase continuity; namely, contiguity, number of contacts, and areas of contact of grains of 1 phase. Application of these concepts may be found in such problems as the calculation of electrical conductivity of 2-phase alloys, or the evaluation of the length of fracture path through grains of a brittle phase more or less dispersed in a matrix. I. DEFINITION The following definitions and derivations are based on 2-phase alloys, of which the units of the microstructure are grains. Contiguity is defined as the average fraction of surface area shared by 1 grain of a phase with all neighboring grains of the same phase. In a 2-phase alloy of constituents A and B, the contiguity of phase B is given by: where Cb is the contiguity of phase B aBß is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase B, aAB is the average area of contact between a grain of phase B and adjacent grains of phase A. The contiguity is a measure of the average degree of contact between grains of phase B in the 2-phase mixture. The ratio varies from 0 to 1 as the distribution of phase B changes from a completely dispersed to a fully agglomerated structure. Smith and Guttman1 have shown that the relative areas of 2 kinds of interfaces in a volume are directly proportional to the number of interfaces of each type intersected by a random line. The lines can be drawn on metallographically prepared surfaces as long as these are random sections through the sample. The contiguity ratio of phase B then becomes: Cb = 2NBB/NAB + 2N BB [2] where: NBB is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B intersected per unit length of random line. Nab is the number of interfaces between grains of phase B and grains of phase A intersected per unit length of random line. The factor 2 arises in Eq. [2] because each interface B-B is associated with 2 grains of B-phase, whereas the interface A-B involves only 1 grain of B-phase. The calculations of contiguity do not require any assumption as to volume fraction, particle size, or particle shape. Fullman2 gives an expression for the determination of the mean free path between particles. The mean free path PB between grains of phase A, i.e., through grains or agglomerates of phase B, may be found from the relationship: PB =2fB/NAB [3] where fB is the volume fraction of phase B. The calculation of the mean free path is independent of grain shape and grain size distribution. The experience of Grey River Gold MiningLimited in pursuing these statutory approvals has identified weaknesses and strengths in the present system and problems which need to be resolved. The Company has learnt lessons, which if heeded, will assist future large scale alluvial mining projects.

Heap leaching of copper sulphide and oxide ores' has been conducted at Rum Jungle since the end of 1965.A review of operations was made and this led to an examination of some theoretical aspects of copper sulphide heap leaching. Ox,ygen diffusion was indicated to be the factor controlling copper leaching rate at Rum Jungle and in other similar operations. Suggestions are made for measuring the heap leaching rate. Prediction of full scale operational results from pilot scale testwork are discussed.

One of the safety and health research programs of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center was the evaluation of technology that will provide remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment in underground room-and-pillar mining. The purpose of this effort was to enable workers to be located away from the hazardous and unhealthful coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies were developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate, reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After investigating several different types of navigation sensors, researchers selected the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) as showing the most promise. It was installed on a continuous mining machine at our Mining Equipment Test Facility. Extensive testing at an open pit (OP) site was also performed. This report describes the INS as it was employed on the mining machine in the laboratory, in the field, and OP tests, and provides the accuracy and performance results of the OP and highwalltests.

Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

With 13.7km of TBM tunneling in Atlanta’s hard gneiss well under way, drill and shoot work continues on several sites throughout the city. In order for the City of Atlanta to meet the consent decree imposed by the federal government, an aggressive construction schedule was a necessity. Construction consists of two deep, large diameter tunnels, four construction shafts, a pumping station, one overflow shaft, three large intake structures, and two connecting tunnels. Due to the multitude of blasting insensitive urban environments, a high standard of seismic and air-overpressure criteria, coupled with time restrictions, was adopted for the project. At any given time, drill and blast operations were under way at four of the seven sites requiring a certain amount of coordination between the TBM excavation, surface work, and the forces of Mother Nature. This paper addresses the challenges faced and the techniques used to safely and successfully complete the rock excavation of the West Area CSO Tunnel and Pumping Station project.

In 1939, the author made a survey of relative gravity in the Mediterranean-basin, 41° 35,5' to 41° 56.3' northern latitude and 0° 10,3' to 0° 28' longitude, referred to Mt. Mario. Ten stations were covered; 25 other stations had been occupied in the vicinity of Rome and in Albanian mountains during previous years. The new measurements revealed gravity anomalies ranging within the following limits: (1) With a free-air reduction, between + 29 and + 120 mgl., average + 60 mgl.; and (2) with a Bouguer reduction, between + 22 and + 87 mgl., average + 41.5 mgl. - V. Methane sensors using principle of catalytic oxidation of methane are employed for determination of methane content in ambient air of coal mines. Certain foreign gases or vapors in the air poison the catalyst of the sensor effecting the sensor's response. After literature search of poison compounds of Pt and Pd oxidation catalyst, experimental studies of catalyst poison kinetics were made for three siloxane compounds, tributyl-phosphate, monobromotrifluoromethane, and hydrogen sulfide, selected as poison vapors. Concentration range of the poison vapors was varied in a range from 3000 to 0.1 ppb (v/v). Three siloxane vapors produced strong catalyst poison effect, followed by tributylphosphate, hydrogen sulfide and monobromotrifluoromethane for the high concentration level of the poison vapors. The poison effects are influenced significantly by concentration of the vapors. Threshold poison vapor concentrations where effect of the poison vapors on the sensor is minimal were determined experimentally. Experimental studies were made further for prevention method of catalyst poison by adsorption techniques. Use of activated carbon cloth inserted on the sensor's head prevented catalyst poisoning efficiently.

Les remblais en pâte cimentés sont de plus en plus utilisés dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH). Le calcium produit permet de précipiter les sulfates (essentiellement sous forme de gypse plus ou moins hydraté) et l?arsenic sous forme d?arséniates de calcium plus stables. Les différents liants utilisés donnent des résultats différents en termes de stabilisation et de solidification qui seront discutés dans cet article.

To reduce fuel consumption in industrial and commercial fuel-burning plants throughout the Nation, cooperative efforts of thousands of individuals are required. These individuals are scattered over the country and hold various positions in thousands of independent establishments. To accomplish as much as possible on this problem during the Second World War, it was decided that personal contact with fuel users was absolutely necessary; publicity, although an important factor, could not by itself give satisfactory and needed results. It was planned to have qualified engineers visit commercial establishments to go over with them the problem of reducing their fuel consumption. The specific plan, toward which all efforts aimed and around which the rest of the program revolved, consisted in brief of 1. Conference of visiting engineer with management to obtain cooperation. 2. Appointment by management of a plant employee as fuel "waste chaser." 3. Work of engineer with "waste chaser" and, if appropriate, with plant operators on most efficient operation of equipment.

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

The established crown pillar extraction method at Gold Fields Australia Ltd.’s Crusader Mine, leads to the significant dilution and poor recovery of ore due to caving of the overlying loose rockfill. The application of selectively injecting specifically developed ‘FB200’ ettringite (calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate) type cement grout into loose rockfill to form a stabilised rockfill material, enables an artificial crown pillar to stabilise the surrounding rock mass and prevent caving of the overlying loose rockfill during crown pillar extraction. Investigation of the geomechanical criteria for crown pillar extraction beneath stabilised rockfill has enabled the safe and efficient extraction of two crown pillars at the Crusader Mine. La méthode actuelle d'extraction des piliers horizontaux à la mine Crusader dont la propriétaire est le Goldfields Australia Ltd amène à une dilution sensible du minerai, à cause de l'effondrement du remblai peu compacté qui se trouve au-dessus. Par moyen d'injection sélective du coulis de ciment FB200 ettringite (sulfoaluminate de calcium hydraté) qui a été développé spécifiquement pour cette application, un pilier artificiel est crée et celui-ci empêche l'effondrement du remblai pendant l'extraction du pilier de minerai au-dessous. This paper describes the basic requirements for the utilization of belt air to ventilate working sections at remote locations in relation to the main fans. It highlights the risks involved, potential problems, and the provisions that must be followed by mine operators for the safe use of belt air. The paper also presents a brief review of the current regulations, conveyor belting tests, atmospheric monitoring system requirements, and the experience gained by mine operators to utilize the belt entries to ventilate remote working sections or areas where mechanized equipment is being installed or removed. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition of belt material in under-ground coal mines.

DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. Physical and chemical conditions permitting, in-situ leaching (ISL) of uranium offers a variety of advantages over conventional production methods including less surface disturbance and less solid waste. Commercial production of uranium by in-situ leaching techniques was initiated in 1963 in the Shirley Basin of Wyoming by Utah Construction. On a world-wide basis, ISL uranium production amounted to about 13.2 million pounds U3O8 in1999, approximately 16% of world output. Both acid and alkaline systems are used, the selection of which is primarily dependent upon groundwater quality and related reclamation requirements. ISL offers low capital costs per unit of annual capacity and is particularly flexible in adapting to changing market conditions.
