Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

This bulletin is the fourth of a series a showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purchase of coal on the dealer's statement as to quality or on the reputation of the mine or district producing the coal is gradually being discontinued. At present most coal-purchasing contracts make definite provision regarding the desired heating value of a coal and the composition as shown by analysis. The heating value is usually expressed in British thermal units" and the composition specified is that shown by proximate" analysis. The price to be paid for delivered coal is made to depend on whether the analyses and heating-value tests of samples representing the delivery show the quality to be above or below the quality set forth in the contract. Large coal consumers are beginning to appreciate more and more the importance of the cost of power as a factor in the cost of producing a finished article. The endeavor to increase the efficiency and the economical operation of a power plant calls for an intimate knowledge of the quality of the coal being used. The purchase of coal under specifications insures the purchaser getting what he pays for and the coal being of the quality guaranteed. In addition, the analyses and tests of the delivered coal furnish data whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the conditions of operation.

Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

This paper presents a case history of design, prediction, probe and production pile driving monitoring, loading tests and installation of over 3,300 prestressed concrete piles for a building complex consisting of 12, 5- and 6-story over parking buildings. The project was recently completed in three-phases over a span of 4 years. The subsoil conditions were explored by performing 25, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings throughout the site. Various types of driven pile foundations were considered and following an evaluation of high structural loads and site-specific constraints such as variable depth of bearing layer of Florida limestone and quality of clay and limestone layers, a prestressed concrete pile support system was selected as the most economical and effective foundation approach. The building foundations were designed for a pile capacity of 353 kN (40 tons) in compression, 45 kN (5 tons) in lateral capacity for a deflection of 0.64 cm (0.25 in.), and 133 kN (15 tons) in uplift capacity. The axial and lateral allowable pile capacity and lengths were predicted using SPT91 and LPILE computer programs, which are generally used in Florida. The validation of these capacities was derived from 144 probe piles and performance of 12 pile loading tests on selected probe piles. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the loading tests on probe piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 4,186 prestressed concrete piles (including 144 probe piles) in different building areas across the project site to depths ranging from 8 to 21 m (25 to 90 ft) below existing ground elevation as part of foundation support system. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and satisfactory basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for this 12, 5- and 6-story over parking building complex. A recent reconnaissance has indicated that all the building foundations are performing satisfactorily.

The rare-earth group are among the least familiar of the 92 known elements. Moreover, the relatively few people who have even heard of the rare earths ordinarily regard them merely as very rare elements having unusual names but doubtful commercial application. This typical attitude can be attributed partly to the fact that no commercial uses have been developed for most of the members of the group and partly to the fact that those which do enter into useful articles do so anonymously. Most people speak with a degree of familiarity of the "chromium" plating on their automobiles or household appliances; "antimony" ash trays and cigarette boxes are on sale in many department stores; and "tungsten" lamps and even "molybdenum" steels are advertised in popular magazines. However, the average user of a pocket cigarette lighter is not conscious that the important sparking element is a "flint" made from ferrocerium, and if he does chap on to inquire about the composition he is likely to be told that it is "sparking alloy", "misch metal", or 'pyrophoric alloy." Similarly, the wearer of spectacles made of "Crookes" or other tinted glass probably is not aware that the light softening effects are due to the presence of rare-earth oxides, or that the arc light on his street may owe its brilliance to cerium fluoride in the carbon electrode. Despite a variety of practical applications, however, most of the rare-earth metals still must be listed as scientific curiosities. In fact, little is known as to the properties which may make them useful products at some future date. Meanwhile it is important to note that Nature has been relatively generous in her distribution of the rare earths and that adequate supplies of most of them will be forthcoming when these elements have proved their worth as commercial products.

Rock bolts are components of tunnel support structures and their efficacy in reinforcement requires the appropriate estimation of the bolt pre-tension. However, cases of ineffective rock bolt application due to loosening are common which leads to the potential failure of the support structures, thus negatively affecting the tunnel stability. The effective employment of pre-tensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut pre-load. Henceforth, this paper presents a load indicator washer (LIW) capable of withstanding assigned static loading as well as provides an appropriate pre-tension. The different LIW breadths are numerically analysed in the finite element code (ABAQUS) to estimate deformation when a designated 60-kN pre-load is applied. The numerical simulation employs a bi-linear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nutLIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, a long-term relaxation effect on bolt pre-tension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW-predetermined deformation is the bolt pre-tension. It is drawn from the simulation results that the 1.5-, 2.0-, 3.0-, 3.5-, and 4.0-mm-thick LIWs are completely flattened when subjected to 28-, 42.5-, 65-, 76-, and 88-kN pre-load respectively.

A new comprehensive insitu instrumentation technique named this RCC Method has been developed for rapid assessment and improvement of the structural stability of underground openings. When applied to tunnel construction, the degree of present and prospective safety of underground openings can be determined in quantitative terms within 10 to 20 minutes of microcreep observation. When applied to mining, roofs and floors can be stabilized by controlling the stress conditions. This stress control method has eliminated the need for intensive roof bolting and extensive floor renewal in all cases where it was applied. Use of this technique is illustrated by field examples from the Seikan Undersea Tunnel of Japan and deep potash mining in Canada. NEW INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUE: THE RCC METHOD Failure problems in underground excavation usually arise in weak non-elastic grounds where conventional rock mechanics theories of elasticity are not only useless but also misleading. Presently, discontinuity planes in the ground are being considered a factor in assessing these failure problems, and while this development is interesting academically, it is not of much use in actual excavation work, where it is nearly impossible to identify and quantize all existing planes of discontinuity. Even if such an extraordinary task could be accomplished at an underground excavation site, effective use of the data would be difficult and impractical for rapid excavation work, with the possible exception of rare cases of ideally elastic ground.

This study is a continuation of previous work in which the responses of tall structures to close-in construction blasting at two rock excavation sites are evaluated. A total of eight buildings were instrumented to calculate blast-induced wall strains. Of these structures, five high-rise buildings measuring 166 ft (51 m) to 294 ft (90 m) in height (15 to 24 stories), were included for this study and compared with the results of previous studies that included one to three story residential structures and mid-rise structures (four to six stories). All five structures were built between 1908 and 1940 with interior walls comprising aged plaster. Three of the structures are designated Landmark, subject to a 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) regulated peak particle velocity (PPV) limit. The regulated PPV limit for the two other structures was 2.0 in/s (50.8 mm/s). To date, a total of 450 close-in construction blasts have taken place over six months at the two adjacent projects, blasting three to six times per day at each site. Seismograph instrumentation included tri-axial geophones in the ground and bi-axial geophones (horizontal components only) mounted on structure exteriors at the corners closest to blasting. Peak global wall tensile strains were calculated from time-correlated differential structure displacements in two horizontal directions as measured by upper and lower geophones mounted near the roof and at street levels. Wall strains were correlated with ground excitations to establish a stiffness factor for each structure defined as the upper bound linear regression slope for strain as a function of ground displacement. In addition, a structure-specific regression best-fit function was established to relate horizontal components of displacement to velocity. These two functions were used to determine the maximum ground motion velocity for a desired limit placed on wall strain. A 25 ?-strain limit was suggested for both projects to protect interior plaster walls. To date, global wall strains have not exceeded 0.53 ?-strains (or 47 times the project limit) for peak particle velocities up to 3.49 in/s (88.6 mm/s). This demonstrates the low strain response of tall structures to ground velocities well above regulated limits. The stiffness factor computed for the most flexible high-rise building was 688 in-1 (17475 mm-1). In comparison, stiffness factors for the most flexible residential and mid-rise structures previously studied were 8651 in-1 (219735 mm-1) and 4387 in-1 (111430 mm-1), respectively. Based on a large number of measurements made at these study structures, the maximum horizontal ground velocity needed to achieve 25 ?-strains in walls ranged from 36 in/s (914 mm/s) to 192 in/s (4877 mm/s) because of the high stiffness of these buildings. Such high amplitudes of ground vibrations can never be safely achieved during close-in blasting in urban environments. These excessive values stand to show how unfounded the current limits of 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) and 2.0 in/s (50.8 mm/s) are when applied to massive, tall structures. This study demonstrated that upper structure motions are highly attenuated from the lower (street-level) motions because of the long travel distances up the buildings. High-rise structures are far stiffer than mid-rise and residential structures and can withstand ground vibration amplitudes far greater than the currently enforced blasting limits in New York City.

Two bridges were constructed for extension work of Central Hokkaido Connection Road in 2005 at two different sites. Pile group foundations were employed for the foundations of abutments of the two bridges. In order to assess the performance of the constructed piles in the sites and to obtain design parameters for design in future, static alternating cyclic horizontal load test was carried out on one of the open-ended steel pipe piles constructed at each site. The ground at one site was characterised as a thick deposit of volcanic soils, and the ground at the other site was characterised as a very soft peat layer near the surface. In this paper the results of static alternating cyclic horizontal load tests on the piles at the two sites are presented and discussed in detail.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. The use of soil nailing has grown steadily in the UK over the last 15 years and it has recently become more popular in the Republic of Ireland. This paper presents three soil nailing temporary works case histories where the technique has been used to support steep excavations in difficult ground conditions. It demonstrates the effectiveness of soil nailing when applied in appropriate conditions. Details of design methods and construction techniques are described and those aspects of soil nailing that will benefit from further study and development are identified.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. "EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer’s pellet silica requirements. In addition, the mine plan was moving towards a lower grade ore and funding was not available for plant improvements to compensate for the change in ore or improving quality. Small changes to optimize various processing equipment resulted in significant improvements in both quality and productivity; for example, productivity on one mill line increased by 10% while producing lower silica concentrate. This paper will provide the methodology that allowed EVTAC to improve quality and productivity through process optimization with little capital investment.INTRODUCTION EVTAC, an iron ore mine in Minnesota, had trouble meeting the customer pellet silica requirements. In addition, the short-term mine plan was changing to a lower ore grade. Because of limited funds, EVTAC did not have the capital for investing in the plant to compensate for the ore change or to make improvements to lower product silica levels. Small changes to optimize process equipment resulted in significant improvements in quality and productivity; for example, one mill line feed rates increased by 10% while also producing a higher quality concentrate. These changes were sufficient enough to allow the mine to lower the target ore grade beyond their initial goal. At one time, a $3M flotation facility was considered as a way to meet quality with the new ore grade. However, the process changes were able to accomplish the same silica reduction with roughly a $50,000 investment in VFDs for sump controls. This paper will discuss some of the modifications that allowed EVTAC to meet the quality and production objectives with little capital investment. It also discusses the methodology used to make these process improvements."

This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.
