DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore consists, in general, of a very finely grained mixture of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite, with a gangue of quartz and schistose material, and contains about one ounce of silver to the unit of lead.Minor minerals are chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and ruby silver. The amount of gangue within the ore-bodies themselves is usually less than 20% of the weight of the whole. The ore is banded in a way that corresponds to the structure of the original schists, and is by no means uniform in composition-at one point, for example, blende may predominate, and a few feet farther on the body may become highly pyritic.Owing to the intimate association of the mineral constituents of the ore, it is very difficult to separate them from one another.Although this remark applies to ore from all parts of the field, the difficulty is particularly noticeable with Rosebery ore, the minerals of which are more intimately mixed, and are of smaller grain size than are the minerals of the Hercules ore.To effect a reasonably clean separation, it is necessary to grind the ore so that 90% passes a 200-mesh I.M.M. screen. Microscopic examination of the crushed product shows that 85% of the minus 200-mesh material is less than 30 microns in diameter, or, in terms of screen sizing, is minus 400 mesh. Particles under 30 microns are found to consist, of one mineral only, but in particles over this size separation has not always been effected. For instance, it is known that part of the galena and of the pyrite in the zinc concentrate is associated with sphalerite, and that part of the galena in the mill residue is associated with pyrite. There is only slight association between the minerals in the lead concentrate.

The recent discovery of the first black smoker-type hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide mineral deposits at a site in the rift valley of the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge near latitude 26°N, longitude 45°W (Rona et al., 1986, Nature, 321: 33-37), demonstrates that a complete series of hydrothermal mineral deposit types exists at slow-spreading oceanic ridges (half-rate = 2 cm/y), similar to the series previously known at faster-spreading oceanic ridges (half-rate > 2 cm/y). The largest hydrothermal mineral deposit known at a seafloor spreading center is a stratiform massive sulfide body with bulk dry weight of about 100 x 106 metric tons in the Atlantis II Deep at the slow-spreading axis of the Red Sea. This observation invalidates the concept that size of a hydrothermal deposit is directly proportional to rate of seafloor spreading. Instead, the occurrence, grade and size of a hydrothermal deposit formed at a seafloor spreading center is controlled by anomalous chemical and physical conditions which may occur at extremely localized sites at the full range of spreading rates. The basic hydrothermal process involving subseafloor hydrothermal convection driven by magmatic heat sources appears to be similar at slow- and faster-spreading centers. However, differences exist in the periodicity of magmatic cycles that energize hydrothermal circulation (104 y at slow-spreading centers; 103 y at faster-spreading centers); in the distribution of hydrothermal sites along a spreading axis (estimated 100 km along slow-spreading centers; 10 km along faster-spreading centers); and in residence time

The report constituted a description and discussion of small-scale Preliminary studies. An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. Muskett, Tasker and Hobson (1962), in applying the method of Browning and McVay in pilot-scale tests, reported difficulty because of activation of quartz and felspar by iron salts introduced during milling of the ore.The flotation of beryl, reported by Ashton and Weir...

The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

Experimental results are presented for the anode overvoltage as a function of current density for different alumina concentrations in an alumina reduction cell. Voltage changes due to the electrolyte resistance and also the decomposition voltage, have been evaluated as a function of alumina concentration and anode current density. From these values of voltage, changes in the total cell voltage have been derived for changes in alumina concentration for different anode current densities. The results show that for each operating current density there exists a discrete alumina concentration that defines a minimum reduction cell voltage. In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

"In the case of treating phosphatizing wastewater containing zinc, zinc had an impact on the solution chemistry, especially on pH. Fe2(SO4)3 and CaCl2 were used as precipitators to remove phosphate from zincic phosphatizing wastewater and the optimum pH was investigated. Zinc ion had a significant effect on the optimum pH. The optimum pH ranges were 12.10(inlet concentration of 15.67mg/L, outlet concentration of 9.53mg/L), 3.04-5.50(inlet concentration of 11.97mg/L, outlet concentration of 0.44-0.26mg/L), and more than 10.72(inlet concentration of 12.24mg/L, outlet concentration of less than 0.47mg/L) under the conditions without precipitator, with Fe2(SO4)3 and with CaCl2 respectively.Introduction Phosphate coating is commonly used for protective coating of machine elements. Including oil removal by caustic washing, rust removal by acid washing, phosphatization and inactivation, the phosphatization process produces wastewater containing inorganic salt of high concentration, especially the phosphate, beyond the environmental standards and polluting environment seriously. What’s more, the wastewater from zincic phosphatizing technology also contains another pollutant, zinc. At present, Chemical Precipitation (CP) and Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) are two of most common technologies of phosphate removal. BNR, such as A/O, A2/O and UCT technology, is suited for wastewater containing organ phosphorus of low concentration and CP for wastewater with phosphate of high concentration [1]. Researches on CP treating wastewater containing phosphate of high concentration, mainly focus on adding quantity of precipitators[2-5] and coagulants[2-4] and the choice of technologies[3-9]."

The annual reports of the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining preparation, and uses of coal, of which the present report is the seventh,4/ are intended to be brief summaries of progress. They are guides to the current work and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published by individuals and groups of workers on specific problems. The annual reports present the results of tests, often in advance of publication in other forms, but original contributions in research are reserved for initial publication by their authors. A survey of the accomplishments of the Bureau in research and technologic work on coal during the 5 year period 1935-40 has been made available in the form of a bibliography.5/ This supplements a similar bibliography on this subject that covers the first 25 years of the Bureau, 1910-35.6/

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

"CP-06 is an NATM cross passage which connects up-line and down-line metro tunnels near Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. It lies completely in loose silty sand to dense sand with water table almost touching the ground surface after Chennai floods. Pre-grouting was done before excavation to seal the area and to ensure no-loose pockets. The heading was excavated successfully but while benching excavation huge water ingress started seeping out. Sand also permeated along with water which became unstoppable due to cavity formation and caused the up-line tunnel to sink considerably. A large grouting exercise was carried out with different grout materials and techniques both from the ground surface and inside of tunnel to stop the water ingress and stabilize the tunnel. This paper describes the chronology of events that occurred in the tunnel during CP-06 issue. It elaborates all the different grouting techniques involved in the whole process of the tunnel stabilization. It includes a finite element analysis using Rocscience RS2 9.0 software showing the possible cause of sand incursion with water from the CP invert which lead to the tunnel settlement. This paper also describes the after effects and the lesson learnt from the whole incident.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of Metro Rails has become the latest alternative to cope up with the transportation demand of the growing urban cities population. L&T SUCG JV constructed Chennai Rail Metro Phase II Contract UAA-04 which included design and construction of approximately 4 km of route length of underground mass transit railway including 3 underground stations. This package also includes 12 cross passages which are NATM tunnels connecting upline and down-line side of TBM tunnel for safe evacuation of passengers in case of emergency. As per NFPA guidelines, this is a mandatory structure and there should be atleast one cross passage in 244m tunnel length.CP-06 is a cross passage connecting upline and downline tunnel between Pachiyappa College Station and KMC Station, in Chennai Metro. During the construction of CP-06, heavy water seepage of around 450 liters per minute was encountered during second round of benching excavation after full heading was excavated. An inflow of around 12-15 cum of sand and silt was also observed inside the tunnel along with the seepage water, which created piping inside the TBM tunnel causing it to settle continuously with time. A huge effort was made to stop the water ingress along with loose sand which was causing the running tunnel to settle, involving all possible grouting methods and temporary support installation."

This paper aims to assess the current and future role of coal in energy strategy of Turkey and evaluates the compatibility of the policies to the EU energy policy and strategy. The Turkish government set targets to utilize more coal reserves of the country in next decades. However, the country is also in the process of becoming an EU Member State, hence, it is expected that the energy policies have to comply with the EU. Moreover, Turkey ratified Kyoto Protocol, thus the country should limit greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are expected to become an important instrument for the mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. An alternative technique to the conventional CCS methods is CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation. Turkey has significant resources of magnesium silicate minerals (olivine, serpentine) deposits which can be utilised in CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation method.

Soil next to an abandoned smelter near Socorro, New Mexico, has the highest Pb concentration in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounted for only 1 to 3 wt. % of the soil. The depth of contamination was determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned about 98 years ago. Lead concentration drops to background levels below a depth of 3 inches. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils revealed an absence of crystalline Pb compounds. We conclude that Pb is present either as amorphous phases or adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Yet, because of the alkalinity of the soil, the movement of Pb-bearing particles controls Pb mobility, not chemical transport in solution. Plant material from the site contained elevated Pb levels that increased as the amount of Pb in the soil increased. Of the types of material tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels. Lead levels were highest in rabbit bush roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in foliage. Levels in cactus varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. "IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental factors in breaking down coal at the face, which govern the production of lump coal in typical mines working, different coal beds. Tiffany and Nelson in 1923-21 conducted tests on methods of blasting and use of different explosives, in a mine working the Pittsburgh bed in Pennsylvania. They determined come of these factors quantitatively, and compared their results with those obtained when the regular mine practice was followed.Results of Previous InvestigationThe tests by Tiffany and Nelson showed that the use of the cartridge of smaller diameter than that used in mine practice, resulted in an increase of 5 per cent in the amount of lump coal passing over a 1-1/4-inch bar screen, with a reduction of 32 per cent by weight in amount of explosive required. On the other hand, they found that on reducing the weight of charge 20 per cent, and using the cartridge of larger diameter, the round would not throw down the coal satisfactorily.Experiments with ""snubbing"" showed a similar improvement in quantity of lump coal, end the coal that was blasted rolled forward into the working place. however, in recent tests at another mine where the coal Lad different physical characteristics, snubbing did not always result in the coal rolling forward, on account of clinging to the ribs, and was not found to be an advantage. Therein the writers of this paper recommend that tests be made before deciding upon the adoption of snubbing in a particular mine."
