The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

As part of a study on high-temperature ceramic materials, the ammonium sulfate, carbonate, nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate salts of yttrium, lanthanum, and cerium were analyzed thermogravimetrically. The temperature ranged from room temperature to 1,500° C. Each salt was decomposed by heating at a rate of 2.5° C. per minute, and some of the salts were subjected to additional rates of 5° C. per minute or 10° C. per minute. The decomposition sequences have been identified, and the temperatures of formation of intermediate compounds and of the oxides have been determined. The minimum oxide formation temperature of a given lanthanum salt exceeds that for the similar salt of yttrium, and both exceed that for the same salt of cerium except for one cerium carbonate. Variation of the heating rate indicates a thermal lag in the materials and produces the shift of formation temperatures to higher values and loss of resolution in the weight-loss distribution as the heating rate increases.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

Automated multi-sensor core loggers (MSCL) measure petrophysical properties of diamond drill cores, including gamma density, P-wave velocity, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A Geotek MSCL system has been used to record petrophysical data on archival drill core from Cadia East Au-Cu porphyry deposit, New South Wales, Australia, for correlation with metallurgical parameters. P-wave modulus, calculated from density and P-wave velocity, exhibits a correlation with small-scale crushability (A*b) test results, and hence offers a means for æcontinuousÆ characterisation of ore crushability at Cadia East. Magnetic susceptibility has proved to be a good indicator of alteration styles, and is a possible indicator of crushability.

Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The British Geological Survey's regional geochemical database is used to identify the patterns associated with the various mineral deposit types and to examine the extent to which their distribution reflects the presence of long-lived metallogenic provinces in the crust. Image analysis provides new insights into the setting of the mineralisation, geochemical constraints on tectonic models of Caledonide evolution and evidence for terrane amalgamation and large-scale processes. There is evidence that much of the mineralisation reflects the presence of long-lived provinces with a distinctive geochemistry reflecting their origins as zones of crustal extension. In the case of the Middle-Upper Dalradiam sedex deposits, the relationship between geochemistry and tectonic setting is direct. In other cases, rocks deposited in extensional zones appear to have acted as reservoirs of ore-forming elements which were further concentrated during later events

This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A. The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Several factors contributing to the loss of fibre during treatment are a function of the paragenesis of the veins. The occurrence, of magnetite from the cap rock within the veins prevents complete fiberization. There is a marked similarity between these veins and those in the Koegas-Westerberg area of South Africa.INTRODUCTIONAn investigation of the mineralogy of the Wittenoom Gorge crocidolite veins was undertaken in the latter part of 1962 at the request of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. It was anticipated that such a study might reveal the cause or causes of the lack of recovery of some asbestos during beneficiation. Some interesting features of the mineralogy and paragenesis of the crocidolite veins become apparent, but it is emphasized that the investigation is far from complete, as the study did not extend to the field occurrence.The samples examined were selected from the mill and from the untreated ore.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGWittenoom Gorge is situated on the Fortescue River in the Hammersley Ranges of Western Australia and is one of several gorges in these ranges, on the sides of which 'crocidoIite asbestos is known to occur. The Hammersley, Ranges consist essentially of a series of quartzites, shales, ferruginous quartzites and dolomites. These' rocks are part of the Nullagine Formation (Proterozoic) and are usually either horizontal or gently folded. Jetti Resources has developed a catalyst which overcomes the passivation of primary sulfides, enhancing the heap leach recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. It is important to emphasize that heap leaching of copper sulfides, whether with or without the Jetti catalyst, is a biooxidative process. We have demonstrated the efficacy of Jetti’s technology in bioreactors, with a chalcopyrite-dominant porphyry ore. In the presence of Jetti’s technology, optimal bioleaching conditions significantly increase copper extraction by 2.6 times that of the baseline.

Risk factors associated with the development of muscu­loskeletal discomfort and disorders during the operation of heavy mobile equipment include whole-body vibration and awkward and sustained joint postures of the shoulders, neck, and trunk. Cab design may influence awkward postures of the joints, and task duration may influence duration of exposure to awkward and static postures and whole-body vibration. To reduce exposure to risk factors related to the interface between cab design and task, it may be necessary for manufacturers to address cab design. This study assessed the repeatability of a cab design checklist developed to evaluate various design characteristics that can influence exposure to risk factors for musculoskeletal discomfort. The ability of the cab design checklist to identify posture-related deficiencies of design was also assessed. The checklist was used by two administrators across 10 pieces of heavy construction equipment. Video analysis was performed to quantify postures of the neck, shoulder, and trunk; correlation analysis was used to determine whether specific questions from the checklist were associated with the identification of awkward postures. The repeatability assessment resulted in kappa coefficients ranging from 0.52 to 1.0 (good-to-excellent reproducibility) across each piece of equipment, and an overall kappa coefficient of 0.77 (excellent reproducibility) when considering all equipment together. Results from the correlation analysis showed that shoulder flexion posture was correlated with scores from the cab design checklist. However, results of the cab design checklist were not significantly correlated with shoulder abduction or awkward postures of the neck and trunk. Results suggest that the cab design checklist may be useful for identifying cab design characteristics that need further improvement and for identifying design characteristics that increase shoulder flexion. The strength of the repeatability assessment suggests that outcomes of the cab design checklist administered by different individuals may be consistent, independent of the type of equipment being assessed.

Drilling accuracy is the foundation to any successful blast operation. Even the best blasting practices cannot overcome poor drilling and still obtain desired results. Inaccuracies in boreholes can result in flyrock, increased vibration, uneven floor, and other undesired effects. As depth increases, variation in actual burden and spacing is expected even if collars are located precisely. Problems arise when this deviation reaches a point where it adversely affects the function of the blast design. Not only can unsafe conditions such as insufficient burden at the face develop, but poor fragmentation can compound adverse effects. As with any troubleshooting, problems cannot truly be fixed if they cannot be measured. As a result, significant work has been done in the past on this subject. Currently, there are both cheap and expensive methods used to quantify deviation for a given borehole. However, implementation of these techniques is limited. In general production blasts, little is known about the variance in designed versus true borehole geometry. This is especially true if the blaster does not see telltale signs of drilling deviation. However, losses in blast performance may exist and provide an opportunity to obtain better fragmentation and reduce fines. As drill and blast operations strive for better optimization, greater focus is being placed on drilling accuracy and solutions to this problem. The following paper details the use of several current methods for deviation measurement in order to help prevent compromises of safety and improve overall blast performance.

In the context of the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory devoted to the feasibility studies of radioactive waste deposits, it appears of the utmost importance to study the long-term behaviour of rock, over a long time period. In this paper, some results of tests performed on the argillite from the Meuse-Haute-Marne site test in Eastern France are presented. Then a numerical simulation of one of this test using the viscoplastic damaging constitutive law proposed by Lemaitre is presented. Finally, this law is used to simulate numerically the behaviour of the rock at the wall of a circular tunnel in order to determine the extension and the change along the time of the Excavated Damaged Zone (EDZ). Advantages and limitations of the model are discussed. Dans le cadre de la réalisation d’un laboratoire de recherche souterrain conçu pour étudier la faisabilité d’installations de stockage de déchets radioactifs, il apparaît fondamental de caractériser non seulement le comportement viscoplastique à très long terme des matériaux mais aussi les phénomènes d’endommagement consécutif à la redistribution de contraintes provoquées par l’excavation des cavités. On présente ici les résultats d’essais réalisés sur les argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne et destinés à caractériser leur comportement visco-endommageable. Il est ensuite procédé à une application de la loi viscoplastique endommageable de Lemaitre pour simuler l'un de ces tests. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden einige Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen vorgestellt, die mit Tonschiefer aus der Meuse-Haute-Marne in Frankreich durchgeführt wurden. Anschließend wird eine numerische Simulation der Untersuchungen unter Verwendung des von Lemaitre vorgeschlagenen viskoplastischen Verformungsgesetzes vorgestellt. As part of an effort to decrease U.S. dependence on imports of critical and strategic metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated three leaching methods for extracting the base metals and recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from matte prepared from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrates. Because of a limited supply of natural material, synthetic matte of composition similar to matte prepared from natural concentrates was used to devise the extraction sequences. The validity of the sequences was verified with matte prepared from Stillwater concentrates. In two-stage matte leaching, first-stage H2S04 leaching extracted 99 pct of the nickel and iron from the matte but negligible amounts of copper and PGM. Second-stage oxidative leaching with Fe2(S04)3 or FeC13 solubilized more than 98 pct of the copper and no precious metals. Sequential leaching, in which acid and oxidizing lixiviants were added sequentially to the matte without an intervening filtration step, extracted 99 pct of the Fe, Ni, and Cu. A roasting-leaching technique, in which the residue from first-stage leaching was roasted between 360° and 500° C before a second leaching with H2S04, solubilized 98 pct of the copper. The three leaching methods yielded high-grade PGM residues containing more than 98 pct of the PGM in the matte.

A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

"The fly-ash problem of the smoke-abatement engineer - who now might well be titled, ""Smoke and Fly-Ash Abatement Engineer"" - starts with the necessity for him to know what fly ash really is, what plants really create it, and how much is being created. Fly ash in this connection may be defined as all solid particles emitted to the atmosphere as a result of the combustion of fuel.COMPOSITION OF FLY ASHMuch can be learned about fly ash by studying samples with a strong magnifying glass or, preferably, a high-power microscope. As an example, figure 1 is a photomicrograph of an underfeed-stoker fly ash weighing 23.7 pounds per cubic foot, which passed a baffle-type cinder catcher and was caught by a Cottrell precipitator. Figure 2 shows a similar fly ash made at a higher stoker rating and weighing 36.2 pounds per cubic foot. The lighter ash contains more light, unconsolidated ash than the heavier. In both instances some of the ash has been fused to a glass, as is indicated by the spherical particles resembling marbles; however, the heavier dust contains more and larger spheres. With the faster burning and higher air pressures occurring at the higher burning rates, more of the larger fused spheres reached the precipitator.Such studies of fly ash frequently make possible correct determination of its source. For example, the Supreme Court Building, one of the finest of the Federal buildings in Washington, was having considerable difficulty with fly ash from some outside plant. It was thought to come from a nearby apartment house. A fly-ash trap was installed there, and care was taken in the operation of their underfeed stokers. The fly-ash nuisance continued. Microscopic examination of the fly ash found about the building compared with samples taken from the stack of the apartment house showed to the surprise of the accusing building superintendent that the present source was elsewhere. By the same means, the source was found to be a plant about ore-half mile away."
