LIMESTONE surpasses any other rock or mineral in the number and diversity of its uses and in the quantity consumed fur industrial purposes. Either in the raw state or when calcined to lime it enters directly or indirectly into the manufacture of a great variety of products and its sphere of usefulness is continually expanding. The term "limestone" as here employed includes all varieties from high-calcium limestone, consisting almost entirely of the mineral calcite, to the highly magnesian variety, largely dolomite. Lime is also discussed .because lime is simply calcined limestone and often the material may be used in either the calcined or natural state. Limestone has been of service to man since prehistoric times but only in the last hundred years has it become one of the most important raw materials in industry. This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Detrick, president, and Edward Thornton, general manager of the company for their cooperation in making this paper possible. The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.3 and 2.6 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year production period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 indexes. Initial capital investment is $34.6 million for the 1.3-MM-tpy mine and $63.5 million for the 2.6-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $50.8 and $92.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $38.51 and $34.91 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $13.41 and $12.27 per ton for the 1.3- and 2.6 -MM- tpy mines.

Solid Energy is the largest coal producing company in New Zealand, employing 500 people and more than 250 mining contract personnel. The coal produced by Solid Energy plays a significant part in the energy mix for New Zealand being supplied to the coal-fired power station at Huntly. It is also supplied to a wide range of industrial users, NZ Steel, and primary processing. It is fair to say however that the positive economic and social benefits of coal have to some extent been overshadowed by the negative environmental consequences of coal mining.   Over the past two years Solid Energy have been actively researching and addressing the impacts that they currently have on the environment and making a significant investment in environmental improvements, rehabilitation projects and environmental research to address historical and ongoing environmental issues. These investments have been driven by the companyÆs commitment to its environmental policy, which states:   æSolid EnergyÆs overall environmental objective is for the cumulative result of all the activities we undertake to have a positive net effect on the New Zealand environmentÆ.   With such significant investment it is essential that the company is able to target expenditure wisely, ie invest where there is greatest environmental gain to be had, and are also able to actively demonstrate to stakeholders the improvements that are achieved. In order to be able to demonstrate the commitment and the steps that the company is making towards this goal a number of systems have been developed. Firstly an environmental management system along the lines of ISO14001 formalising the environmental processes, responsibilities, auditing and management review. Secondly as part of the planning element of the EMS an environmental management matrix, which allows the scoring of sites against environmental management goals, has been developed. Thirdly the monitoring and measuring tools have been upgraded with GIS driven relational databases installed for management of consent related information and monitoring results.   The development of the environmental management matrix has drawn on a number of existing systems such as the Australian Institute of Mining and Minerals Code 2000. In addition to adapting the scoring regimes from these methods the Solid Energy Environmental Matrix has been further developed to ensure that it reflects the actual environmental impacts on site, as well as the management and audit systems that are in place to control them at a strategic level. The development of this matrix has included a number of steps: +        reviewing the information that stakeholders would be interested in, +        reviewing what was already available, +        development of systems to collect data and benchmark the current         operations, and +        setting up support systems to ensure that the correct information would be provided for scoring.

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. 'Wants' in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Recent findings by medical workers on the association of certain zeolite minerals with the high incidence of pleural mesothelioma in two small Turkish villages have caused considerable excitement both in medical circles and in the synthetic and natural zeolite businesses. The 42 cases diagnosed between 1970 and 1977 in one community of 600 population in a region of altered volcanic tuff represent a virtual epidemic of this rare malignancy which normally strikes only about one person in a million. Cancer workers around the world expect that detailed environmental and epidemiological studies of the disease in these areas will shed considerable light on the cause of this particularly lethal form of lung cancer. Scientists and engineers developing uses for zeolite materials in industry and agriculture, however, are justly concerned that the preliminary results available on this situation will be used by environmental and regulatory organizations to label an entire group of miner- als as carcinogens on the basis of what is little more than circumstantial evidence. Although there is no question as to the large number of cases of mesothelioma in these areas of central Anatolia, the work to date has suffered from a lack of sound geological and mineralogical input. Ataman (1) stated that a "correlation" exists between mesothelioma and zeolites in this region; however, the geological data needed to document a direct relationship between the presence of zeolites in the volcanic tuffs surrounding the villages in question and the rate of malignant lung disease in the inhabitants have g been obtained, nor has evidence that suggests a cause-effect relationship between zeolites and cancer been reported. To provide fundamental information on the distribution of zeolite minerals in areas of central Turkey where high incidences of pleural mesothelioma have been reported and to evaluate from first-hand knowledge the published reports and news releases of medical workers engaged in assessing the problem, the following investigation was made.

One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

Amongst the unavoidable studies of the mining engineer who desires to reach the maximum efficiency, is the subject of patents. With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Better patent administration is always in Australia a valid requirement, and until engineers generally take up and press the demand, bad administration is likely to continue. Even though every engineer is not a patentee, nevertheless his interests in patents must always be direct and powerful, and ignorance or apathy in regard thereto must inevitably injure either his own interests or those of his employer. VANADIUM was discovered in 1801 by Andres Manuel del Rio, a professor of mineralogy at the School of Mines in Mexico City. Del Rio called the new element erythronium. Later, he decided that this was not a new element but a form of chromium. Not until 1831 did Nils G. Sefström, a Swedish chemist, positively determine that the metal was a new element which he named vanadium, after Vanadis, the Scandanavian goddess of beauty. From 1831 to the 1860's and 1870's, the comparative scarcity and high cost of vanadium restricted its commercial use. Shortly after 1870, more information was obtained on the physical and chemical properties of the element. Thereafter, research on vanadium has dealt largely with its use as an alloying element in steel and nonferrous metals. Vanadium is a widely distributed element in the earth's crust. It is more abundant than many metals but is disseminated in small quantities throughout a great variety of rocks. Relatively few deposits have contained ore of a grade suitable to warrant development for vanadium alone. It is produced in conjunction with uranium, iron, titanium, aluminum, and lead-zinc ores.

Coal mine bursts have represented a major hazard for U.S. mining operations for more than 90 years. During this time, many prevention controls have been developed and tested. This paper reviews 11 prevention control techniques. Although coal mine bursts are not common events in most underground coal mines, their occurrence almost always requires a change in mining practice. Over the many years of dealing with these hazards, specialized requirements for layouts and novel extraction sequences have been developed on a site specific basis. The keys to mitigating risks are to properly assess the coal burst hazards and to possess the knowledge and skills to prevent or remediate their occurrence.

This publication reports on the design, fabrication and test of an Improved methane monitor system for compliance to 30CFR75.313. The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. The contract objective was to develop and test automatic fire control systems for large surface machinery in surface coal mines. The effort described by the report covers the period from 31 January 1977 to 11 November 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Data accumulation, mainly from visits to the major manufacturers and mine sites. ? Hazard analysis of blast-hole drill, mining shovel, and dragline. ? Recommended design concepts for automatic fire control systems for each of these vehicles. ? Detail system designs for each of these vehicles. ? Procurement of prototype systems for the blast-hole drill and mining shovel. ? Installation of the prototype systems on machines at a surface mine and demonstra¬tion of performance by fire tests on the machines.

The realization that there is a limit to our supply of domestic mineral and fuel resources, which have been taken for granted until recently, has stimulated the need for conservation and optimum utilization of the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels-resources critical to our national economy. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop new technology, improve existing technology, and disseminate information related to mineral resources and industries. Fulfilling the mission is necessary to insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and alternative supplies of energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible cost to society and the environment. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines under the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral field. Since the transfer of the fossil fuels portion of the energy research program to the newly organized Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in fiscal year 1975, Bureau research has been concentrated on increasing mineral production, decreasing energy usage through more efficient processing, and decreasing material losses caused by corrosion. Concurrently, research is being addressed to improved coal-preparation techniques, especially to expanding utilization of low-grade coals and coals difficult to beneficiate, which are essential for reducing the need for petroleum and natural gas supplies and for redirecting our energy consumption. Fluctuations in the availability of foreign sources of minerals, metals, and fuels due to political and economic variability among nations have necessitated intensified investigation into coal mining, uranium-ore processing, and geothermal energy sources-three alternatives that can help to alleviate the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy.

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. Mine site infrastructure for storage and delivery of hydrogen must be standardized and acceptable for routine and safe industrial use before fuel cell technology is adopted as a major power source. An initial study reviewed possible options for production, storage and delivery of hydrogen for underground equipment. The high level review included assessment of economic, operational, technical, and health and safety risks. Following this review, a subsequent theoretical study to select typical minesite infrastructure and for construction at an operating research mine is outlined.
