I spent 41 years as a geologist with the US Geological Survey (USGS) conducting geologic studies and preparing peer reviewed maps and reports describing the results of those studies. Since retiring from the USGS in 2011, I have been a consultant specializing in aggregates and other industrial minerals. Consequently, I have had the opportunity and pleasure to apply the information contained in those kinds of geologic maps and reports to real-life situations. About half of my consulting is performing due diligence for mineral resource evaluations of one type or another where resource information has been provided by the property owner. Many of those jobs necessitate that I conduct desktop studies followed by field work. I then use my information to review and comment on the written reports of others; reports variably referred to as geologic reports, resource studies, reserve analyses, and so forth. While there are many well written reports addressing geologic resource issues, I was surprised to see that there are also a significant number of so-called geologic reports that only pay cursory attention to geology. Unfortunately, that lack of rigorous geologic investigation commonly leads to erroneous conclusions. This paper addresses three such reports covering concrete sand, metallurgical gravel, and proppants (frac sand). Although all three examples are located in the Gulf Coastal Plain Province, I do not reveal the exact location of any of the properties for purposes of confidentiality. Furthermore, I have generalized the site descriptions and illustrations. However, all the descriptions faithfully define the geologic situation.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. 'Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

Acid-Base Accounting (ABA) is an analytical procedure that provides values to help assess the acid-producing and acid-neutralizing potential of overburden rocks prior to coal mining and other large-scale excavations. This procedure was developed by West Virginia University scientists during the 1960s. After the passage of laws requiring an assessment of surface mining on water quality, ABA became a preferred method to predict post-mining water quality,and permitting decisions for surface mines are largely based on thevalues determined by ABA. In order to predict the post-mining water quality, the amount of acid-producing rock is compared to the amount of acid-neutralizing rock, and a prediction of the water quality at the site (whether acid or alkaline) is obtained. We gathered geologic and geographic data for 56 mined sites in West Virginia, which allowed us to estimate total overburden amounts, and values for maximum potential acidity (MPA), neutralization potential (NP), net neutralization potential (NNP), and NP/MPA ratios for each site based on ABA. These values were correlated to post-mining water quality from springs or seeps on the mined property. Overburden mass was determined by three methods, with the method used by Pennsylvania researchers showing the most accurate results to actual overburden mass. A poor relationship existed between MPA and post-mining water quality, NP was intermediate, and NNP and the NP/MPA ratio showed the best prediction accuracy. In this study, NNP and the NP/MPA ratio gave identical water quality prediction results. Therefore using NP/MPA ratios, values were separated into categories: <1 should produce acid drainage, between 1 and 2 can produce either acid or alkaline water conditions, and >2 should produce alkaline water. On our 56 surface mined sites, NP/MPA ratios varied from 0.1 to 31, and six sites (11%) did not fit the expected pattern using this category approach. Two of eight sites with ratios <1 did not produce acid drainage as predicted (the drainage was neutral), and four of 40 sites with a ratio >2 produced acid drainage when they should not have. These latter four sites were either mined very slowly, had non-representative ABA data, received water from an adjacent underground mine, or had a surface mining practice that degraded the water. In general, an NP/MPA ratio of <1 produced acid or neutral drainage sites, between 1 and 2 produced mostly alkaline drainage sites, while NP/MPA ratios of >2 produced alkaline drainage with a few exceptions. ABA is a good tool to assess overburden quality before surface mining and to predict post-mining drainage quality after mining. The interpretation from ABA values was correct in 50 out of 52 cases (96%), excluding the four anomalous sites, which had acid water for reasons other than overburden quality.

The steepness of an openpit mine’s slopes has a substantial influence on the mine’s financial return. This paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross section within each rock layer: that is, the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here, instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is used to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth-varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties and factor of safety (FoS).

One of the problems encountered when constructing a roadway is the planned route often needs to cross soils that are soft and highly compressible. An approach to dealing with soft and compressible soils is to construct the fill from lightweight materials, thereby reducing the stresses on underlying soils. Most lightweight fills have approximately the same cost, so the most important consideration when choosing a lightweight fill is that the material properties of the lightweight fill match the conditions existing at the site. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been used as a lightweight fill material for more than 30 years. The EPS used for road fills is typically in the range of 0.5 to 2 lb/ft3, and has a compressive strength of in the range of 10 to 30 lb/in2. If a higher strength material is needed, then the material density is increased, which also adds to the cost of the material. Another type of lightweight fill material that is commonly being used is lightweight aggregate (LWA). LWA can be created by passing slate or shale through a rotary kiln or reheating coal fly ash with other materials to form pellets or aggregate. Several companies throughout the U.S market these materials under a variety of names. LWA can have a unit weight from 45-80 lb/ft3. For sites where trucking granular fill does not pose a problem, this material may be an alternative to EPS. One of the drawbacks to using LWA is the availability of the material. Only a few companies are manufacturing LWA, so it may not be available or may be cost prohibitive in certain areas of the country. Lightweight flyash blocks have been produced which may fill the gap in unit weight between the EPS and LWA. Blocks have been produced with a unit weight as low as 30 lb/ft3. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to handle, and have a moderate compressive strength. Although the unit weight is dramatically higher than EPS, the strength is also higher. If lateral stabilization of the fill is a problem, then geofabrics or grids can be incorporated into the design to add lateral strength.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

Sotiel mine is situated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in southern Spain, some 40 km north of the port of Huelva. Although mining operations at the site date back to Roman times, the present mine came into production in 1983 and 5.6 million tonnes of ore had been extracted by 1993. The orebody is volcano-sedimentary and consists of fine grained copper, lead and zinc minerals in massive pyrite surrounded by slates and volcanics. Prior laboratory research had resulted in the synthesis of a new collector, belonging to the MercaptoBenzoOxazole (MBO) class that acts selectively towards Cu and Zn minerals after activation with CuS04. The MethylMercaptoBenzoOxazole (MMBO) version of this collector had been used for the laboratory flotation of Cu minerals and sphalerite activated by CuS04. This resulted in identification of the optimal physicochemical conditions for laboratory-cell flotation of the two minerals from samples of complex sulphide ores, and subsequently the reagent has been tested in the Sotiel plant (Spain). The plant has three flotation sections. With conventional re-agents, the first section yields a Cu concentrate grading 21% with a total recovery of 29%, and the second one yields a 40% Pb concentrate with total recovery of 34% and a 47% Zn concentrate with total recovery of 78%. Application of the new synthetic reagent in the copper and zinc circuits produces a more selective process with a decrease in re- agent concentration grade and recovery are increased by 2 and 9 points respectively in the case of Cu and by 1 and 3 points where Zn is concerned. Moreover, the penalty elements in the Cu concentrate are halved.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. The separation, conducted at ambient temperature and a pressure of about 1000 psi a, was based on the difference in wettability of precious metals and minerals. Contact angle results indicated that in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold, platinum and silver had intermediate wettability. Minerals such as quartz and magnetite, however, were hydrophilic. Therefore fine gold particles. -325 mesh, that were mixed with water and liquid CO2 dispersed in the CO2 or agglomerated at the H2O-CO2 interface while the minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when these fine gold particles were liberated, were not agglomerated in slimes, were not adhering to minerals, and were not coated with minerals.

The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favourable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB have concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i.e. such D.R. processes which are carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for D.R. pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.

The New Celebration Gold Mine near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was commissioned in late 1986 and the CIL treatment plant currently processes 1.7 million tonnes of gold ore annually. The 1988 geological resource was 13.2 million tonnes grading 2.37 g/t Au in several open pittable deposits with the bulk of gold mineralisation occurring as a stockwork in Archaean quartz feldspar porphyry intrusives along a major regional shear zone. Mine planning, scheduling and operating techniques have focused on minimising open pit dilution whilst maintaining production requirements. This paper describes the successful achievement of this aim in extremely variable ground conditions and orebody widths.

A public awareness of and commitment to abate pollution of water, air, and soil continues to stimulate demand for industrial minerals and rocks capable of neutralizing strong and weak acids. The role of acid neutralizing agents is 1) to treat acidified water and soil until the desired pH is attained and 2) to remove acid-forming compounds from industrial processes to mitigate the formation of acidic discharges. Environmental applications for these agents include: acid rain mitigation, neutralization and prevention of acidic industrial process discharges, and treatment of acid mine drainage and coal refuse. Desulfurization of industrial flue gases involves removal of sulfate compounds capable of combining with hydrogen to form acids. Details of flue gas desulfurization are covered in the previous chapter on Flue Gas Desulfurization. Ideally, the neutralization of acids results in an upward adjustment of effluent pH 7, or neutrality. The final pH value for many acid treated wastes, especially industrial discharge streams, is commonly over neutralized to pH 8.5 to 9.5. The Clean Water Act sets the upper discharge limit at pH 9. ACID NEUTRALIZATION REAGENTS Acid neutralization is accomplished by adding alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds to acidic water or soil until the desired pH is attained. The commonly used alkali ions are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). Sodium hydroxide, high calcium and dolomitic hydrate, high calcium and dolomitic lime (quicklime), high calcium and dolomitic limestone, soda ash, and magnesium oxide are the compounds most commonly applied to raise the pH of acidic waters or soils. Limestone and dolomitic limestone, which are calcium and magnesium carbonates, and their equivalent oxides and hydrates formed by calcination, are the industrial materials most commonly used in the manufacture of reagents for acid neutralization. Approximately 327 kt of high calcium and dolomitic lime were consumed for acid neutralization purposes in 1988. Magnesite and brucite are industrial minerals that compete with dolomitic limestone for the magnesium-oxide market. Production of caustic calcined magnesia for neutralization purposes exceeded 6 kt in 1990. Soda ash is an industrial mineral gaining increased acceptance in the neutralization of acid waste discharges. Approximately 182 kt of soda ash were consumed in 1990 for acid waste treatment or acid prevention by flue gas desulfurization. Other mineral products either consumed in minor quantities or receiving attention as future neutralizing agents include zeolite and hectorite. In some cases, waste products have been found to be suitable and cost effective for neutralization of acids. Common wastes gaining acceptance include basic slag, phosphate mining refuse, cement kiln dust, fly ash, and mine tailings.

Perlite is a hydrated acid volcanic glass that has been derived from the alteration of obsidians through incorporation of water into the silica structure. It is distinguished from other members of the water-bearing natural glass family by total water content, characteristic fracture and luster. The distribution of major occurrences worldwide is associated with silicic Tertiary through early-mid Quaternary volcanics related to plate movement. The No Agua dome and flow complex is one of the most highly studied perlite occurrences in the world. It clearly exhibits lithologic and textural zonations that reflect simple cooling history. Similar features are commonly observed within other perlitized, extrusive glass selvages. This paper briefly discusses current thought regarding geologic occurrence, the hydration process and the modes of origin with special emphasis on No Agua.

General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda&apos;s property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda&apos;s (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13&apos;A x 20 ft). "The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) conducted a study of mining industry electrical injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the years 2000 to 2009. The findings of that study are detailed in this paper, and serve to characterize the circumstances surrounding electrical injuries and identify causal factors. The study included three tasks: 1) a direct review of mining industry occupational injury data compiled by MSHA, 2) interpretation of the narrative descriptions available for the injuries (from MSHA data) and 3) a separate examination of fatal electrical injuries. Eight-hundred sixty-five electrical injuries were reported during the 10-year period studied, with 39 of those being fatalities. This makes electrical injuries disproportionately fatal with respect to most other types of injuries in mining. Electrical injury rates were higher in coal mining than noncoal mining and, within the coal sector, rates were higher in underground operations than in surface operations. Of the 865 total cases, electrical and machine maintenance or repair activities were involved in 580 (69%), and electricians and mechanics were injured in 362 cases (42%). Of the 39 fatal electrical injuries, 27 (69%) involved electrical maintenance or repair work, and in 21 of these 27 cases, the failure to de-energize, lock-out and tag the circuit was the cause or a contributing factor. Also, contractor employees had a much greater chance of an electrical injury being fatal than did mine operator employees. The top three root causes for fatal electrical injuries were 1) no or inadequate lock-out and tagging, 2) failure of power system components and 3) contact of overhead electrical power lines by mobile equipment.

The study explores the potential of BFS ceramics for use as refractories and thermal energy-storage devices, highlighting their high thermal storage capacity, good thermal shock resistance, and cost-effectiveness.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.
