Gua supergene enriched iron ore deposit from Jharkhand, India has been geostatistically modeled. Population modeling shows a negatively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Fe and positively skewed 3-parameter log-normal fit for Al2O3 and SO2. Semi-variographic studies for Fe indicate spherical function fit using point kriging cross-validation technique with Co=4.06(%)2, C5.11 (%)2, Co+C=9.1 7(%)2 and 'a'=348m. Kriging with 50mx50mx 10m block size at 740mRL led to a global mean kriged estimate of 61.98% and kriging variance of 4.04(%)2 for Fe with central 90% geostatistical confidence limits at 61.39% and 62.24% for that level. This led to an ore inventory at 740mRL as 7.29 million tonnes of ore.

This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d'Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

The aim of this study is to compare amino acids and organic acids in the extraction of gold from silicate ore. Amino acids were found to have higher efficiency of gold extraction than organic acids at the same acid concentration, which is likely due to amino acids having both carboxylic and amine groups in their structure, while organic acids only have carboxylic groups. Five amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and seven organic acids (citric, malic, tataric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acids) were selected to investigate gold extraction efficiency. Aspartic acid was found to have greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid. The optimal gold to aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6, and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35 to 42 percent of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. Further studies are needed to increase gold leaching and reduce incubation time. The results imply that aspartic acid can be used as an alternative reagent to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore. This method is nontoxic to humans, is environmentally friendly and can have real applications.

INTRODUCTION This paper report presents the general case history for the construction of the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) project. A 1982 City of Los Angeles Wastewater Facilities Plan recognized that a 19.3 km (12¬mile) section of the North Outfall Sewer (NOS), from Culver City to the Hyperion Treatment Plant, was deteriorating and had insufficient capacity. Built in the 1920s of unreinforced concrete and lined with vitreous clay tiles, the originally unventilated NOS suffered considerable corrosion by H2S gas. This caused roof tile and concrete to fall to the bottom of the pipe, which, over the years, reduced the 11.9 M3/S (420 cubic feet per second (cfs)) design capacity of the NOS to a current level of approximately 8.5 M3/S (300 cfs). This worsening condition, thereby contributing to the polluting of Santa Monica Bay. This situation culminated in the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Los Angeles Region, issuing a Cease and Desist Order on January 27, 1986, which required the City of Los Angeles to eliminate such dry weather overflows through a number of prescribed actions. One of these was to construct the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) by April 1, 1993. The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

Clinoptilolite zeolite may offer attractive, cost-effective alternatives for remedial cleanup of old minesites, smelters and other sites with heavy metal contamination. Previous research demonstrates the relatively strong affinity of clinoptilolite for numerous metals and clinoptilolite displays a particularly strong affinity for lead (Loizidou and Townsend, 1987), one of the most toxic and problematic heavy metals. Since clinoptilolite can also selectively absorb some radionuclides and organic compounds, it may offer practical solutions to a wide variety of environmental problems.

The information I have concerning the early in situ uranium mining activities in Texas is "sketchy." Apparently, the first test was conducted between 1967 and 1971 in Gonzales County, north of Yorktown, at the Dueterstat Site, by, City Service. Other tests were run in Webb County at the Bruni Site, and in Live Oak County at the Burns and Clay-West Sites in the early 1970's. During this period the Texas Water Quality Board maintained a general surveillance of these tests. In mid-1974, Mr. Glen Davis walked into our Austin offices and requested a permit for Atlantic Richfield's first in situ uranium mine. This permit, issued in January, 1975, was for 3 acres of production, and was the first such permit issued in the United States. It formalized the regulation of in-situ uranium mining in Texas. The 4 years since then have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 20 permits approved for approximately 2,000 production acres. These permits are issued to 8 companies at 13 sites in 6 counties. There are 7 additional permits being processed, or on the verge of being applied for. These will involve possibly another 2,000 production acres, 3 more companies in one more county.

Capital investments are made for a variety of reasons, ranging from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals, which lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

"Within underground portions of metro rail networks the traditional approach to a design fire has been to assume a worst credible railcar fire and develop ventilation and egress measures for life safety. This approach is being challenged as a rail network approach to design fires becomes a more practical and realistic approach. The network approach is based on utilizing an in-depth hazard analysis, to understand ignition and fire load sources in tunnels, above and below the floor of the railcar and within stations, and then utilizing a quantitative risk assessment to determine sets of fire scenarios. The process allows small, medium and large fires to be considered, with the consequences also being quantified. The selection of design fires has a significant influence on fire protection measures within a metro network and hence, is a major cost input. The rail network approach provides more robust decisions on fires, based on the hazards present. INTRODUCTION A fire within a rail car or one that occurs as part of a rail system can threaten the lives of users, maintenance staff and emergency services personnel. Fires in metro systems are rare events but can have severe consequences. As a result, any analysis of a potential fire must be thorough and rigorous and address not only regular accidents and small fires, but also very low probability, high consequence scenarios. The fire safety design process for a tunnel and station must start with the design engineers, contractor and operators making a number of key decisions related to fire protection measures, which may have significant cost considerations. One of the key aspects that influences the required fire protection is the design fire and the design fire scenarios, which is a key input for analysis. This paper provides an overview of the author’s experience in designing fire protection measures for rail networks in Europe, Australia and NZ, where a risk based framework is used to develop design fires and scenarios for the whole rail system – trains, stations and tunnels. This system wide approach is innovative, challenges the norms, but provides significantly more informed outcomes. The range of design fires will include small fires that may halt the network, larger fires for smoke hazard system design and significant post-flashover fires to assess the structural response."

The selective depression of pyrite from the Kentucky No. 9 coal seam was systematically examined using various kinds of inorganic and organic chemicals. Most of the organic chemicals tested showed little selectivity in pyrite depression. It was found that both orthophosphate and pyrophosphate were effective for the selective depression of coal pyrite in coal flotation using fuel oil as a collector. At substantially low concentrations of pyrophosphate, the flotation of coal pyrite was completely depressed over a wide pH range, while the coal flotation remained unaffected. The mechanism of the selective depression of pyrite by phosphates was explained with the help of thermodynamic calculations of iron-phosphate-water systems and zeta-potential measurements. It was shown that pyrophosphate reacts strongly with the iron ions of pyrite to form stable hydrophilic iron pyrophosphate complexes on pyrite surfaces.

"The goal of the protocol for reclaiming in-pit tailings ponds to exceed federal and state regulations was to develop a series of steps that can be followed to design, operate, and reclaim a tailings disposal pond that will develop into grazing land with a wetland for open pit sand mines in warm dry climates. By incorporating a wetland into the reclamation design, the post mining land use gives back to both the wildlife as a source of water as well as providing for a diverse range of post mining land use including but not limited to livestock grazing and ranch land use. An example design was completed using this protocol to demonstrate how the protocol can result in in a well-designed, reclaimed tailings disposal pond. BACKGROUND In an industry plagued with decaying historic mine sites, the public’s perception of mining appears to be poor. While modern mines are closely monitored and generally managed by ethical professionals, history still influences how the public perceives the mining industry. From collapsing abandoned underground workings to historic tailings dam failures, the failure to account for the environment in the past seems to affect public perspective on mining today. In a 2013 “Opinion Former Survey,” a survey conducted through interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders in various gold companies, it was noted that the most serious challenges facing the mining industry were environmental concerns and the permitting challenges associated with them (Council). In another article, this time focusing on Australian citizens and their perspectives of the mining industry, it was found that the majority of those surveyed had a big concern over the environmental impacts of mining especially when it comes to water quality and quantity (Scan). The statistics portrayed in these articles illustrate that today’s mining engineers needs to make more of an effort to change the public’s perspective of mining by being more environmentally aware. These engineers should be continuously asking themselves what they could be doing better from an environmental perspective to ensure that history is not repeated and that natural resources are used as efficiently as possible."

"Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations has two natural gas-fired molybdenum roasters for converting molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. When these roasters were compared to other similar units within the company during a benchmarking exercise, it showed that increased throughput from the roaster units at Sierrita was possible. A team of site metallurgists, technical experts from other sites, and engineers from the Climax Technology Center was formed to study the potential in more detail. The team investigated many parameters in the roaster, including temperature profiles, roaster chemistry profiles, rabble and drop hole patterns, and operational strategies. The results of these studies and the associated throughput improvements are described in this paper. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component for the steel industry, is typically found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). MoS2 is typically recovered via flotation processes and is purified through leaching processes. While molybdenum disulfide is a commercial product, it is not the form of molybdenum that the steel industry requires. They require molybdenum in the form of molybdenum trioxide, MoO3. There are multiple ways to refine molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. The primary method is the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide in a multiple hearth roaster. The chemistry of converting molybdenum disulfide to molybdenum trioxide is very favorable at increased temperatures, oxidizing the molybdenum through a range of exothermic reactions to ultimately produce MoO3. The chemical reactions that occur in molydenum roasting occur in three zones. These three zones correspond with four different reactions."

Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

With formation drillability taken as a starting point, graphs and charts are given as an aid in the selection of bit load, circulation system, flow rate, drill stem, cutter design and rotary speed.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating.
