Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

This paper describes the application of pressure foam to control respirable dust in a double-drum longwall mining section. The feasibility of passing an adequate quantity of pressure foam through the shearer drum was initially established in the laboratory. Thereafter, underground testing of the foam system to determine its effectiveness on an active operating longwall was conducted in a mine in West Virginia. The foam system proved superior to the water spray system. The de- tails of the laboratory and field investigations, the results obtained, and the degree of acceptance of this system by the mining company are discussed in this paper.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The Homestake-New Mexico Partners consist of Homestake Mining Company of Lead, South Dakota; Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc; United Western Minerals Company; White, Weld and Company; J.H. Whitney; San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation; and Clyde Osborn, Homestake Mining Company is the general partner, the others are limited partners. The Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc. has. a mine in the Ambrosia Lake area; this was the first mine to go into production in this area. The United Western Minerals Company also has a mine in the Ambrosia Lake which is operated as a "farm out" from the San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation. These mines are the principal sources of ore for the mill. This group was the first to obtain a contract with AEC to make uranium concentrate from Ambrosia Lake ores and the first to have a mill in operation specifically for these ores. With Clyde Osborn as the sparkplug and co-ordinator holding the ore suppliers of, this group together, a contract with AEC was agreed on as to its essential points by mid-summer, 1956, At that time, there was no general partner and no financing, so me formal contract could be signed. By December, 1956 when the contract was signed and the present partnership officially formed, much of the basic engineering was done and purchasing of main elements of the mill waited on the formalizing of agreements, at the specifications and sizes agreed on previously. Ground for the mill was broken in April, 1957. The sampling plant went into operation in October and ore was first fed to the ball mills on February 5, 1958, ten months after construction actually started. Filling of the circuit with sodium carbonate bicarbonate solution had begun a week before that.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines investigated solvent extraction methods for recovering gallium from filtrates produced from sulfuric acid leaching of hydrometallurgical zinc residues. These filtrates typically had pH values of 0 to 0.5, too high an acid content for effective gallium recovery by traditional extractants. Of the nine extractants studied in batch tests, 0.3M octyl phenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) in a kerosene diluent was the most effective extractant for gallium recovery, extracting up to 99.9 pct of the gallium. This high extraction was possible when the iron in solution was maintained in the reduced ferrous state. Batch tests also showed that a 1.5M-H2SO4 strip liquor recovered 98 pct of the gallium from the loaded OPAP. A continuous solvent extraction system was designed and operated based on McCabe-Thiele analyses of equilibrium loading and stripping isotherms. When 12 L of leach filtrate containing 0.32 giL Ga and 20 giL Fe were pumped through the system in 32 hr, results showed that 95 pct of the gallium was extracted in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:1. Stripping the loaded solvent with a 1.5M-H2S04 liquor recovered 94 pct of the gallium in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:4. A two-stage, 50-pct-phosphoric acid strip successfully removed ferric iron from the OPAP, allowing high gallium extractions to be maintained.

The use of personal computers (PCs) is increasing in underground construction applications, specifically, for estimating, record keeping, construction performance analysis, project cost reporting, and the effective application of construction experience for estimating and aggressive bidding. Applications particularly suited to the PC are analyses of construction performance and differing site condition claims. The advantages of using a PC in the analysis of differing site conditions claims is that the PC: requires quantitative and factual data, allows vast data manipulations, calculations, and sorting, and provides a simple graphic representation of complex data and issues. The restrictions imposed by a PC are conducive to the focus on essential facts, issues, quantitative analyses, and inherently, the truth. As computer thinking is established, a clearer, more precise and accurate focus on the elements of a differing site condition is essential for successful evaluation and presentation.

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. Expectations for coal in the early to mid-1970's prompted the government and industry to pursue research and development programs to increase underground and surface mining coal productivity and net coal recovery. Several programs concerned advanced surface mining methods for thin seam coal recovery. Three such programs, along with related areas of interest, are presented in this paper, namely: (1) extended depth augering for trench-strip applications; (2) high recovery auger heads for enhanced recovery; and (3) variable wall mining in low cover longwalls. Conceptual development is examined, prototype testing is discussed, and potential operations are considered.

The Mixshield is a tunnelling machine for water bearing soft soils. Developed on the basis of the Hydroshield, it extents the application of this machine to cohesive soils. Preparation of briquettes by adding CaF2 reagent into the Australian iron ore powder. The structure and morphology of iron ore briquettes during various reduction stages (i.e., Fe2O3→Fe3O4, Fe3O4→FeO, and FeO→Fe) were observed via an ore microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CaF2 reacted with SiO2 to form CaO and SiF4 gas during the roasting process. The reduction swelling index decreased from 12.36 to 8.83% when the CaF2 content in the briquettes increased due to CaF2-mediated refinement of the hematite grains during the first stage of the reduction process. Lattice distortion resulting from the presence of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice during the second stage of the reduction process, coupled with an increase in the porosity of the iron ore briquettes and the formation of a low-melting-point slag phase, promoted the anisotropic growth of FeO lamellar crystals, which resulted in an increase in the reduction swelling index from 4.27 to 7.36%. During the third stage of the reduction process, the growth of iron whiskers was promoted by wüstite (FeO) lattice distortion caused by a solid solution of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice; the reduction swelling index increased from 15.61 to 24.72%, resulting in the catastrophic swelling of the iron ore briquettes.

Bentonite Corporation decided to pursue ISO-9002 Registration for our bentonite production for many reasons. We wanted to improve our current Quality System to encompass all business aspects, not just Quality Assurance. We wanted this system to build supplier/customer confidence and provide our customers with all the services that they needed for their business functions: such as Quality Assurance for their needs; appropriate shipping and delivery; appropriate billing; and appropriate sales, technical and management support of our product. These objectives of our Quality System are addressed by the ISO 9000 clauses and requirements. There were additional reasons and expectations for implementing an ISO 9000 Quality System. ISO 9000 registration would develop and aid international sales since the ISO system is a basic requirement in many parts of the world such as Europe and the Far East. It would bring acceptance of bentonite products by new customers and markets Another objective was to develop better trained employees. We hoped that the ISO Quality System would help us reduce costly non-conformances and reduce overall production and operating costs. We hoped to achieve ISO 900 registration before our major customers required it. For example, our major market is use of bentonite as a binder in foundry mold sand systems. The foundries in North America primarily service the automobile manufacturers who have individual Quality System requirements that are being merged with ISO 9000 Standards. As the foundries addressed the automobile manufacturer?s needs, Bentonite Corporation received numerous inquiries and surveys of our Quality System and its conformance with ISO 9000 Standards. Eventually, ISO 9000 Registration will become a requirement to directly or indirectly service this market.

In the mining and processing industry, the maintenance plan has often evolved rather than being consciously set up resulting in an overreliance on breakdown and fixed-time maintenance (planned maintenance). Historically mining and processing plant equipment has been robust and less automated than modem equipment, making it relatively easy to work on. Mining and processing plants have relied on large and expensive maintenance departments to enable rapid attention to breakdowns. Maintenance itself can result in excessive downtime and costs. This results from the requirement to take the machinery off-line to carry out (possibly unnecessary and invasive) maintenance. The danger of infant mortality after it has been put back on line again and also the cost of the maintenance action itself contributes to costs. A goal of any well-run maintenance program is to have the lowest cost while providing 100% capacity 100% of the time to operations. When maintenance investments are at a minimum, the cost of lost production is at its highest. As maintenance effort and investments are intelligently increased, the production loss gradually decreases until the lowest combined cost is achieved. This is the maintenance goal. A road map is needed to achieving maintenance excellence. This article addresses a "Road Map" to achieving maintenance excellence. "Broken and jointed ground is extremely hazardous and requires unique stabilization techniques to protect worker and critical entries. Bolting techniques, even the most advanced with pre-load to create roof compression, can leave large gaps of unconfined and separated roof. This roof can also be susceptible to water inflows which only exacerbate the support problem. These types of conditions existed on long term development main entry accessing several future longwall panels. The geotechnical assessment identified well-defined jointing systems that also permitted water to flow between the roof separations, which “lubricated” the roof material and minimized any frictional advantages. Chemical injection of a Polyurethane material, Minova Carbopur WS, was placed beyond the bolted horizon to move the water to the rib lines and reinforce the fractured and broken roof. The injection material permitted the effective use of bolting patterns and helped ensure long-term stability of these critical entries. The paper describes the evaluation techniques, design patterns, basis for chemical selection and application, and results and recommendations.BACKGROUNDThe injection of mine and underground civil structures using polyurethane (PUR) has been ongoing for over 50 years. The applications in mining have included gate road stabilizations, longwall set-up and tear-down entries, and simple consolidation of coal mine roofs. PURs have also been used for roof stabilization during longwall shield recoveries. Polyurethane injection was initially developed by the Bergbau-Forshung GmbH, a German coal mine research institute, in the early 1960s (Jankowski, 1972). The product became a standard stabilization method in Germany after its commercial introduction in 1971 (Knoblauch, 1994), and was successfully manufactured at the Minova Essen, Germany location for over 50 years. With the recent closing of the German underground mines, that manufacturing facility has been closed and moved to Katowice, Poland, where production continues today Injection products are also being successfully manufactured by Minova in Australia and the United States.Polyurethane injection in underground coal mines is used in difficult ground conditions in fractured immediate and main roofs. It is also common as a rock stabilization remedy to prevent longwall face caving during shield removal. As presented in the case study, polyurethane was applied to minimize the inflow of water from beneath a stream channel while providing reinforcement and consolidation of the fractured roof that had lost confinement. Polyurethane is a two-component system (Part A and Part B) that is injected into a borehole and can chemically bond to the rock, not relying on friction or mechanical interlock to provide support. The material is injected under pressure, coupled with a low viscosity and small particle size; it flows into roof fractures and separations, which are the paths of least resistance. New developments in low viscosity PUR materials allows penetration of cracks as tight as 0.002 inch (0.05 mm) wide. This also allows for the closures of extremely small cracks to minimize the inflow of water, even if the water is under pressure. Combinations of designed expansion properties and low viscosities make the materials ideal for minimizing and stopping flows of water from underground structures."

Fan performance graphs are generated by digital computer using two programs, RUN- FANS and FANPLOT. RUNFANS calculates fan performance data from stored specific-volume, specific-speed data for a given fan type with appropriate allowances for fan diameter, rotational speed and air density. FANPLOT accepts specifications for drawing the graph and accepts either user-supplied pressure-quantity data or RUNFANS- calculated data as input, Operational procedures for both programs are detailed and examples of their interactive query routines are included. The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. "The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

A mine fire or roof collapse may necessitate the reversal of main fans to isolate the fire or provide an escapeway. Hence, to assist the mine operator in estimating the flow and pressure during reversal, Engineers International, Inc. conducted a laboratory and field study of the reverse performance characteristics of main mine fans. Laboratory tests were performed using a 96-inch (2.4 m) diameter vane axial fan to establish the forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions. Subsequently, a field test was conducted in a Colorado oil shale mine during which two 79-inch (2 m) diameter fans were reversed. The data obtained indicate that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. The quantity in the reverse mode ranged from 30 to 65% less than in the forward mode, and the static pressure was directly proportional to the square of the quantity.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.
