The classical slope analysis and a statistical technique were used in order to determine the iron complexes formed in the organic phase during the extraction of Fe(III) from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in kerosene. Equilibrium constants for the extraction based on these complexes were also calculated. The complexes determined were of the general form (Fe(OH)3-nRn?sHR)x' where n varied between 1 and 2.5 and s between 0 and 3, and both were found to be decreasing as the iron loading in the organic phase increased. Values of 1,2 and 3 were generally found for x, indicating that the complexes were monomers, dimers and trimers.

Creede, one of the younger major mining camps in Colorado, grew spectacularly to a town of eight or ten thousand people in the early 1890's following discovery of rich ore in the Amethyst and Last Chance mines. Gross metal production in gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc rose to a maximum of four million dollars a year in 1893. Annual production dropped to much lower figures and ranged between one hundred and five hundred thousand dollars per year during the period from 1914 to 1940. Production reached a gross of eight hundred thousand to one million dollars per year by the mid-1950's. In the years 1953 to 1957, Steven and Ratté conducted geologic investigations which were carried on as part of a cooperative program of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Colorado Metal Mining Fund Board. In a preliminary report on the Creede District, Steven and Ratté suggested that the Bulldog Mountain Fault Zone appeared to be a favorable structure to prospect. On the basis of that recommendation, augmented by independent work done by Manning W. Cox, the property was acquired, transferred to Bulldog Mountain, Inc. and financed by an O. M. E. loan. Late in 1963 Homestake Mining Company, under a Lease and Option Agreement, backed the venture by furnishing additional funds plus management.

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. This paper describes the practices and methods used in a study of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) as an inexpensive deformation monitoring tool in underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is being developed near Carlsbad, New Mexico, for the disposal of transuranic nuclear wastes in bedded salt 655 m (2 150 ft) below the surface. Data collected from WIPP geomechanical monitoring are used to characterize conditions, confirm design assumptions, and understand and predict the performance of the deep salt excavation. The geomechanical monitoring program encompasses numerous geomechanical monitoring techniques ranging from inspection of observation boreholes to advanced radar surveys. In 1989 TDR was introduced as a monitoring tool with the installation of 12.7 mm (0.5 in) diameter TDR cables in the underground excavations. In 1993, a new TDR system was installed in a separate location. Based on experience with the previous installation, enhancements were implemented into the new TDR system that: 1.) extended the period of performance by increasing cable diameter to 22.2 mm (0.875 in), 2.) increased accuracy in locating areas of deformation by aligning cables with nearby observation boreholes, and 3.) improved data acquisition and analyses using a standard laptop computer, eliminating the chart recorder previously used. In summary, the results of a correlation between the TDR signatures to nearby observation boreholes and geomechanical instrumentation will be presented.

Quintette Coal Limited (managed and 50% owned by Denison Mines Limited) operates an open pit coal mine located in northeastern British Columbia, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. (See Fig. l). Mining commenced in 1982. The mine currently produces 4.75 million tonnes of medium volatile bituminous coal per year from three pits (Mesa, Wolverine and Shikano), using a truck/ shovel operation. (See Fig. 2). Conveyors and trucks transport run-of-mine coal to the heavy media/froth flotation process plan t, where it is cleaned and loaded into rail cars for delivery to the Ridley Island port at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. All coal is sold to the Japanese steel industry under a long term contract. The coal seams mined at Quintette are contained in the Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation. Mineable seam thicknesses vary from 0.6 m to 10 m. The regional structure of the area is typical of foreland fold and thrust belts, with open to tight folds and imbricate thrust faulting. The range of structural features found in the three pits, and their effect on mining, forms the subject of this paper.

The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant has been studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, pH of the solution, iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium was investigated. It was found that high temperature and high pH of the solutions were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.77 kJ/mole.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

"As the bulk handling sector continues its transformation to Industry 4.0, the mining industry, and its harsh working and environmental conditions, provides a perfect spot to study the feasibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components used for bulk handling. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era in recent years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts.However, the big items of the installations rely on smaller parts that have been leftaside, mainly due to the difficultyof adapting them to the Internet ofThings (IoT).The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers, while all the other components of the conveyorbelt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums, etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stoppage of the entire conveyor, due to possible damage to the belt. Thus, the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must.The research and development department of ULMA Conveyor Components has been working since early 2012 on the development of monitored rollers, testing all the problems until their final installation in different demanding conditions, from the extreme heat in Australia to the freezing cold of Norway. All the tests have been done under actual working conditions, in real installations and have provided valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solutions and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system.Background and current stateThe malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can force the standstill of the entire installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures, such as a rip in the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation, where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could result in huge economic losses."

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

The removal of tritium from tritiated water (-0.5 µCiIL) was studied by metallothermic reduction using aluminum. The influence of the three variables namely the aluminum powder amount, the NaOH concentration and the reaction time has been studied on the tritium activity reduction. The experimental results and statistical analysis showed that more than 85% of tritium can be removed from the tritiated water. Further work on the tritium recovery as well as efforts to totally decontaminate water by incorporating a cryogenic concept is currently pursued.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. In the 1990?s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead?s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

The discovery of important new ore deposits of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955 in Southeastern Missouri has resulted in the development of a thriving mineral industry known as the "New Lead Belt" or "Viburnum Trend", to distinguish it from the older lead producing areas to the East. This region has recently become the world's largest lead producing district with production in 1970 reaching 432,576 tons or 74.4% of the entire United States lead mine production. The area is heavily forested with rolling hills dotted with numerous clear running streams in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. The location is within 70 miles of St. Louis, Missouri and has a natural abundance of water resources which provide an important recreational area for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities. Until this recent development, the area was sparsely populated and industrialization was almost unknown. The infusion of $150 million in mining capital has brought about a dramatic change in the economic structure of the area and will almost surely be accompanied by changes in its environmental picture. In an effort to maintain this bountiful national resource and to evaluate the changes occurring in surface water quality and aquatic life forms present, an inter- disciplinary research program at the University of Missouri has been undertaken with the support of the National Science Foundation. Research has been carried out to determine background values, establish natural baselines, and to evaluate the extent and causes of changes in streams effected by mine water discharges and wastewater from ore milling operations. The unique topography of the "New Lead Belt" area allows the channelization of milling and smelter wastes to separate stream systems (Figure No. 1) thus allowing measurements of the pollutional effects on an individual basis.

On behalf of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to your Institute for presenting us with this opportunity to outline the regulatory control programme as it relates to the mining industry in the Province of Ontario. In Canada, and particularly in Ontario, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers covers nearly 17 per cent of the area of the Province. (Total area of the Province of Ontario is 412,582 square miles.) The mining industry, which had its beginning in the early 1800's with a small iron ore plant, has progressed with the major discoveries of nickel and copper in 1883, silver in 1903, gold in 1908, iron in 1939 and uranium in 1953, to the point where, in 1966, almost one billion dollars in mineral wealth was mined in Ontario. Water, in spite of its great abundance and with due respects that it may become a natural resource worthy of export in the foreseeable future, has become increasingly precious in Ontario, particularly in the more urban areas in the southern part of the Province.

"Image-based rock fragmentation sensing in mines and quarries includes an important rock boundary delineation step, commonly referred to as rock segmentation. This paper presents an artificial intelligence-based solution to this challenge. The proposed technique encodes prior knowledge of previously analyzed images into mathematical/statistical models. Human-labeled images are used as inputs to train neural networks through an optimization process. The networks can then be used in real time for rock delineation. To build the models, special deep artificial neural networks are used as a pixel classifier. The proposed classifier labels each pixel (edge, rock or fine) by analyzing a plurality of pixels within the image. Advances in machine learning allow the network to contain many parameters. The increased number of parameters is a strong factor in the classifier’s ability to correctly classify each pixel. Deep learning-based segmentation, combined with 3D imaging followed by post processing, provides a unified fragmentation sensing solution. Results from automatic segmentation are compared to human labeled segmentation using the percentage passing curves for 64 rock images. INTRODUCTION Mines and quarries can see significant productivity and performance benefits by controlling material sizes (McKee, Chitmobo, & Morrell, 1995; Sellers & Gumede, 2012). During the past decade, image-based fragmentation analysis has been applied to estimate rock size distributions in order to optimize procedures in mines and quarries. Using a roving camera and operator assisted analysis Maerz, Franklin, and Coursen (1987) measured the size distribution of the blasted rock and eliminated the need for manual sieve analysis. Since then, many others have introduced automated and manual methods for fragmentation analysis and improved upon existing approaches (Girdner, Kemeny, Srikant, & McGill, 1996; Smith & Kemeny, 1993; Palangio, Palangio, & Maerz, 2005; Tafazoli & Ziraknejad, 2009; Raina, 2013). In image-based fragmentation, rock boundaries are identified in the image, and an image scaling is applied to transform rock pixel sizes into real world dimensions. Usually geometric references, such as regularly shaped objects (discs and basketballs) (Siddigui, Ali Shah, & Behan, 2009), or the known size of an excavator bucket (Zeng, Chow, Baumann, & Tafazoli, 2012), are used to determine the proper scaling factor. In recent years, 3D imaging and sensing have also been incorporated to improve rock delineation. Specific methods include using camera-laser combinations and stereo imaging to measure rock fragmentation on conveyor belts (Noy, 2013; Thurley, 2013; Dislaire, Illing, Laurent, & Pirard, 2013) as well as portable fragmentation analysis devices with 3D imaging sensors (Sameti, et al., 2014)."

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. We, as a nation, are beginning to realize that land is a limited natural resource and that the way we choose to use 'this resource affects many other aspects of our lives--whether we can catch edible fish in the Mississippi, how much we pay for sewer services, if we can swim in a

Problems of mine backfilling and fill material deposited underground, the characteristics and relationship between the deposited fill material and overlying ground, and the practical applications and limitations of hydraulic backfilling as ground support are discussed. A great variety of materials ranging from coal washery refuse to concentrator tailings is used as hydraulic fill. Some materials will solidify and cement; others will resemble quicksand, Hydraulic fill as ground support is more efficient in inclined mine openings than in horizontal mine openings, where it cannot be placed tightly to the back. This and other deficiencies of hydraulic backfilling led to the development of pneumatic stowing. Research work in hydraulic backfilling at the Pennsylvania State University is also discussed. This research work includes the investigation of segregation in the discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, the relationship of escaping solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate, and the compressibility of fine fill material.

Laboratory data and field tests indicate that substantial losses of valuable coal can be caused by wind erosion. Wind tunnel tests show the effects of wind velocity and particle sizing on the amount of coal lost while in transit. Different coals were evaluated to determine the variables associated with wind erosion. The erosion losses can be substantially reduced by using a binder, or crusting agent, to consolidate the surfaces of the coal into a solid mass which resists erosion. This not only reduces economic loss but minimizes pollution.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals.
