The operation of a series wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit determines the soluble loss in many hydrometallurgical operations A study of this circuit yielded expressions which permit calculation of soluble loss for almost any condition of operation. The soluble loss over a range of the circuit variables is presented to illustrate and evaluate circuit performance, The interrelation of factors affecting filter performance and some of the wash circuit, variables are quantatively described. Filter wash, which is governed by wash zone size, filter pulp level and filter feed pulp density, has the greatest affect on soluble loss. Excepting clothing blinding and flocculation the factors which decrease filter capacity also decrease soluble loss. Repulping with water, under some circumstances, can bean important means of soluble loss reduction. Water for primary filter wash, leach pulp density repulp density and wash thickener underflow density have little effect on soluble loss. The dilution of both o the filter pulps with wash solutions is suggested as a means of reducing soluble loss, and at the same, time, controlling the performance of the filters. Blowback and filter cloth blinding seriously increase soluble loss.

ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.

In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. Major portions of this have been excerpted from A Mining Engineers Notebook: Mineral processing (2).

Burst-prone conditions are a significant hazard in deep hardrock mines, elevating the risk to excavation stability and, more importantly, to worker safety. As mining progresses deeper, induced stress changes may trigger the initiation of rock failure processes which can be detected and recorded as mine seismicity. The implementation of seismic monitoring and routine seismic data analyses enables mine seismicity to be quantified spatially, temporally and on scale. The ability to quantify and characterize mine seismicity offers the opportunity to gauge seismic hazard, identifying high risk zones for mitigation against burst-prone excavation failure. Over the last decade, the Mines Technical Services (MTS) group at Vale Canada Limited’s Garson Mine assessed seismic hazard with the objective of assigning practical mitigating controls to zones identified as having a high rockburst potential. Initially, seismic hazard was computed using the Seismic Excavation Hazard Mapping (SEHM) software developed by the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) at Laurentian University, Canada. More recently, Vale Sudbury Operations partnered with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics and the University of Western Australia’s mXrap consortium. Through the consortium partnership, MTS at Garson Mine implemented the mXrap seismic data analyses platform, including the grid-based seismic hazard assessment tool. Building on 10 years of seismic hazard assessment experience at Vale Garson Mine, this paper summarizes a comprehensive case study, comparing the two tools (SHEM and mXrap) used at Garson Mine to assess, quantify, and represent seismic hazard. Subsequently, results of the Garson Mine comparative seismic hazard study will be discussed, emphasizing the need for an all-inclusive hazard assessment tool, focused on delivering practical mitigating controls that further enhance the overall safety of seismically active underground mines.

A radioisotope probe (Minexan 202) capable of simultaneously analyzing a mineral slurry for five elements and pulp density has been developed by Outokumpu Oy, Finland. The probe is designed to operate immersed directly in a process stream, or it can be equipped with a flow cell through which passes a continuous sample of the main stream. A minicomputer (PDPII) is used to control the probes and calculate the assay data. This paper describes the probe as applied to slurry analysis and compares it to the conventional x-ray on-stream analyzer (Courier 300).

The increasing magnitude of our nation's pollution problems seems to stem from two main factors: urbanization and technical advance. In 1920, less than half the country's 106 million people lived in cities. Forty years later, the urban population accounted for 70 percent of the nation's 179 million. It is predicted that by the end of the century, 95 percent of the U. S. population, estimated at 280 million, will live in urban areas. As these people live increasingly in city concentrations, their residues also concentrate. With technological advances to support the increasing population, the variety and quantity of goods that we use also increases. New materials and processes result in increases in pollutants, some of them new. The harmfulness of these pollutants is sometimes known, but sometimes only suspected. One pollutant of concern at the present time is sulfur dioxide, the product of combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. Research on processes to remove sulfur oxides from flue gas has been in progress for many years. Pioneers in this field were the British who, in the early 1930's, installed a full-scale flue gas scrubbing unit on a 120 MW boiler using alkaline water from a Thames estuary plus chalk. Since that time, various methods have been studied by many investigators. Federal laws covering air pollution started with the 1955 Air Pollution Control Act. With the advent of the Air Quality Act of 1967, and subsequent publishing of criteria and available technology for control of sulfur oxides in January 1969, the clamor for information on commercially available control techniques to remove sulfur from fossil fuels has rapidly increased. Although many state-of-the-art papers have deluged the literature during the past several years, the research going on in the area of sulfur oxides control is of such importance that periodic reviews are justified. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to again review the state-of-the-art, but this time from the stand-point of what is immediately commercially available

St. Joe Minerals Corp., a subsidiary of Fluor Corp., treats high-grade gold, silver, and copper ore at its El Indio plant at an altitude of 4 km in the Chilean Andes. The ore is complex, being a mixture of massive pyrite-enargite and quartz, both containing very fine gold and silver. Treatment produces a copper flotation concentrate containing high levels of gold, silver, and arsenic, and also dore bullion. Part of the flotation concentrate is roasted to remove the arsenic content, and arsenic trioxide is collected as a by-product.

An 81 hectare (200 acre) tailings impoundment at a taconite operation in Wyoming that ceased operations in 1983 has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction included: incorporating commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300 mm (12 in) thick "cap" of a sterile clay loam cover material, lowering the water level in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin, constructing a wide tailings pond spillway that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water level fluctuations in the pond, and building rock berms and rock snow fences for wind erosion control and soil moisture preservation. Tree planting in the protective wind/snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences, and the plugging of a decant pipe are planned for future work.

The importance of properly designed and calculated performance factors for the BWE systems cannot be overemphasised. An accurate knowledge of Interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species Is Important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation interactions in Florida phosphatic clay waste, that are relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption, the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation, were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slime were due to unselective polyacryllc acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Ai and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. Further increase in separation of natural slime is likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro, NC, treating crude Waelz oxide (WOX) to produce special high-grade zinc by a hydrometallurgical process comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc-dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent cadmium buildup in the circuit. Silica, though present at a low level of approximately 0.3 percent in the WOX feed material, had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also affected. To identify the source of the silica issues, silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit, and adjustments, including using pregnant leach solution as the feed to cementation, and pH control in the WOX leaching and neutralization were introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction (SX), electrowinning (EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment (Fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 225 ft (69 m) were tested at an average rate of four wells per 8-h shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75-pct time savings and an 83-pct labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

The Duval Corporation Sierrita copper and molybdenum mining complex is located approximately twenty-three miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The original open pit mine, Esperanza, was put into operation in 1958 and utilized one tailings dam until the Sierrita operation began in 1970, and a second pond was started. Both tailings operations continued to be operated separate and independently of each other until 1977, when the Esperanza Mill was temporarily shut down, and the Esperanza Tailings Dam was retired from service. Except for short periods of use, no new tailings were put on the surface. With the reactivation of the Esperanza Mill in 1979, the Esperanza tailings were combined with the Sierrita Mill tailings and put on the Sierrita Dam, leaving the Esperanza Dam in a retired state.

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Short-term mine planning to open pit requires defining diglines to orientate the excavation geometry. In deposits with multiple chemical variables, it is necessary to have more rigorous control over the feeding of the processing plant. This study analyzes the impact of incorporating multiple chemical variables, the risks generated by geological uncertainty, and the number and starting point locations of shovels in the sequential design of diglines. The objective is to maintain and preserve the low-grade variability, required tonnage, and continuity in sequentially selecting blocks. To achieve this, the probability distribution function of each chemical variable is used while attempting to maintain the ore grades as constant as possible. As it is difficult to maintain multiple elements with low variability simultaneously, the relevance of each chemical variable in the economic benefit is identified. Weights are assigned to signal the importance of each element based on its significance in the recovery process. Several diglines, consisting of sequential blocks, were generated on the same seed point to meet the weekly ore demand. Optimizing the stationarity of multiple chemical variables, accessing and reducing the geological uncertainty performed through geostatistical simulation of grades and transfers functions, considering the number and location of shovels, while meeting the operational restrictions of the selected blocks. The optimized digline with the multiple grades as stationary as possible is retained. The process is illustrated in a phosphate mine. The results show that the proposed method is viable and allows for a quick solution.

In the present study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of chloride ions on chalcopyrite bioleaching and chemical leaching at 25 °C. The leaching results show that the addition of chloride ions suppressed the dissolution of chalcopyrite in both chemical and bacterial leaching. In chemical leaching, the solution redox potential in the experiment without Cl− stayed in a range more suitable for chalcopyrite dissolution compared with experiments with Cl− . In bioleaching, the bacteria activity was suppressed by Cl− leading to low dissolution rates of Cu. Surface morphology and chemical speciation studies confirmed the formation of potassium jarosite on the surface of the chalcopyrite leach residues. In addition, S K-edge XANES indicated the formation of trace amount of elemental sulfur and covellite on the mineral surfaces.

The main goal of this study was not only to investigate the effectiveness of the FGX Dry Separator for removing pure rock from run-of-mine coal producing a better feed stock for conventional coal preparation plants but also to optimize the FGX Dry Separator performance for producing a salable clean coal product without using the conventional wet coal preparation processes. A Model FGX-1 Dry Separator with feed throughput capacity of 10 tph was extensively tested at the Illinois Coal Development Park using two coal samples having distinctly different cleaning characteristics. Statistically designed experimental programs were conducted to indentify critical process variables and optimize FGX Dry Separator performance by systematic adjustments of critical process variable parameters. The coal cleaning performance of the FGX Dry Separator was evaluated for the particle size range of 63.5 x 4.76 mm in most cases, although FGX Dry Separator feed consisted of nominal -63.5 mm run-of-mine coals. The best cleaning performance obtained from the FGX Dry Separator is described by specific gravity of separation (SG50) and probable error (Ep) values of 1.98 and 0.17, respectively. The SG50 and Ep values for individual size fractions were as follow: 1.90 and 0.12 for the +50.8 mm size fraction, 1.95 and 0.18 for the 50.8 x 25.4 mm size fraction, 2.01 and 0.19 for the 25.4 x 12.7 mm size fraction, and 2.03 and 0.23 for the 12.7 x 4.76 mm size fraction. These process efficiency measures produced a clean coal with ash content of 13.38% from a feed coal with ash content of 34.45%. Ash content of tailings and middlings streams were 85.09% and 39.57%, respectively. Total sulfur contents of corresponding streams were 3.87%, 4.68%, 6.87%, and 4.62%. For a relatively easy to clean Illinois No 6 seam coal (Cleaning Index: 0.72), only about 0.42% of the clean coal (i.e., 1.6 float fraction) present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream. For a relatively difficult to clean coal (Cleaning Index: 0.53), about 0.98% of the clean coal present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream.

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.
