Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Deep tillage is used widely as a Means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids during deep tillage to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil in the laboratory using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil properties to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Freely accessible and non-confidential real-life geological data sets from mineral deposits are desirable for the wide range of applications in research and education. However, publicly available statistical data are limited in their number and quality—they contain reduced information about geological, geophysical, geotechnical, chemical, mineralogical, and other relevant properties of deposits. This makes such data insufficient for scientific purposes. However, the amount of geological knowledge obtained for a variety of deposits in the past allows the construction of an idealized synthetic ore body model using analytical approach. Such a model could be used for education purposes and testing basic scientific theories, e.g., visualization of deposit structure; teaching sampling strategies; testing new algorithms for mine planning; or comparing geostatistical modeling methods. This paper presents an analytical approach to simulate volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and shows how synthetic deposit model can be constructed and further used for studying sampling with drilling and simulating folding and faulting.

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

The seismic vulnerability of the existing outlet tower at Lake Mathews reservoir, located in Riverside County, California, necessitated the design of a new outlet facility to assure serviceability of the facility following a major earthquake. The components of the proposed facility include: a new outlet tower; a shaft; a new outlet tunnel; an approach channel that will be excavated underwater; and two short tunnels that will connect the new outlet tunnel to the existing outlet tunnel via the shaft. As the new facilities will be constructed while the reservoir is in operation, a cofferdam will be constructed around the site of the new outlet tower. The design for the underground facilities used a combination of empirical methods; limit equilibrium analyses, including displacement-based pseudo-static analyses for dynamic loading conditions; and numerical analyses. This paper outlines the design methodology used to develop an innovative design for the facilities which can be constructed within the time frame required by the operational schedule of the reservoir and existing outlet facility.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel' would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

"In order to control Quaternary loose layer settlement in East China, there are monitoring results based on the 3 water level observation holes and 7 sand layer of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor. Un-der the conditions of upper group water injecting to lower group of loose layer, the deformation characteristics of upper, middle and lower group of loose sandy soil layer changing with time and relationship with the water level are studied. The constitutive relation of stress-strain is also studied at different sand layers. Research results show that using water injecting from upper group into lower group of loose layer can ease the loose layer compression deformation. With the water level dropped, in East China soil creep deformation occurred, which accord with viscoelasto plastic model. The deformation of lower sand group has clear later effect and no direct relationship with water level. The results provide an important basis for the study East China stratum settlement model and water management. INTRODUCTION Ground-surface subsidence is a common geological disaster, which has the features of continuous, changing slowly, concealment (Y.P. Yin et al. 2005). Today, due to underground mining and constructions in formation compression, surface subsidence is wide-spread in the world, which is the environmental geological problems in the worldwide that cannot be ignored (Y.Q. Xu et al. 2006, D.L Gallo-way et al. 2000, Qiu, B. et al. 2011). The eastern region of China has generally geological disasters in coal mine geological caused by the thick loose layer settlement like as mine shaft failure. Stratum dehydration consolidation is a major cause of loose layer settlement (H.Y .Liu et al. 2007). A method of water injection using ground water to stable water level is proposed, which can effectively control the loose layer caused by compression settlement(J. Chai et al. 2012&.2013). Accurately knowledge the characteristics of strata deformation is the premise of settlement management (Q.C. He et al. 2006). Previous re-search (J.F. Miu et al. 1996, X.Y. Gu et al.1998, Y. Zhang et al. 2006), mainly studies are focused condition of the city pumping irrigation, de-formation characteristics of middle and up loose layers. On a group of aquifer in East China, the loose layer losing water is caused by coal mining, bottom water drainage and overlying strata water flowing fractured zone hydrophobic induced by mining, which the dehydration conditions have great difference from one to another. The Position of water loss is centralized in bottom aquifer, and the formers of ground subsidence geological environment and settlement mechanism are different. According to the study of stratum settlement, usually the de-formation of sand layer is ignored(C.H. Liu et al. 2004), but few studies show that the sand layer have the plastic deformation, and contains the creep deformation, water content of sand soil may become the main settlement layer (Z.X. Wei, 2002, C.H. Liu et al. 2004)."

Eight Mine Weather Stations (MWS) installed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) to monitor the underground ventilation system me helping to simulate real-time ventilation scenarios. Seasonal weather extremes can result in variations of Natural Ventilation Pressure (NVP) which can significantly affect the ventilation system. The eight MWS(s) (which previously collected and stored temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity data for subsequent NVP calculations) were upgraded to provide continuous real-time data to the site wide Central Monitoring System. This data can now be utilized by the ventilation engineer to create real-time ventilation simulations and trends which assist in the prediction and mitigation of NVP and psychrometric related events.

Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

A proposal for a modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non-cyanide lixiviant is described. A non-cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide-bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores were chosen as a focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulfate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulfate breakdown. A reconnaissance research program involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical test work on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modeling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulfate and ferric EDTA and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples in bottle roll tests under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Therefore, the term ?in-place leaching? has been adopted for the proposed gold extraction system.

Wide settlers are a way to decrease the linear velocities of advancing liquid phases. It has, however, been found unnecessary to risk a proper settler performance by building shallow settlers in order to avoid a so-called interface turbulence due to a too big difference between the linear velocities of the organic and the aqueous phase. This conclusion has been reached from tests using a large transparent settler model, where the behaviour of a clean interface between two advancing liquids has been investigated. Also in a more realistic case, making an organic in aqueous or an aqueous in organic dispersion to move between the liquid phases, no obstacle has been found to use a somewhat more deep and correspondingly ore slowly t10wing aqueous phase. Based on above findings, support can be given to a new trend to build the settlers slightly deeper than what has been typical for the so-called low-profile design. In this way, it is much easier to avoid an excessive air introduction and other severe difficulties, like those caused by crud moving from one stage to another. It is further shown, how gravity can be used to slow down and distribute a dispersion being fed into a settler of a VSF unit. Entrainment levels have been found to be reduced by a careful design of primary dispersion distributors and picket fences of the settler. Finally, it is demonstrated, how outlets from the side of the settler can be used to simplity interstage pumping and to decrease the rotation speed of any pumping device.

INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulphide ores, not many studies have been made from the electrochemical point of view. It is generally recognized that the oxidation of sulphide minerals is one of the most Important factors among those which affect the floatability of sulphide minerals. The concept that the presence of oxygen is essential to the flotation of sulphide minerals is supported by numerous experimental results (1). The presence of oxygen in sulphide minerals- aqueous solution systems would affect the electrochemical behaviour of sulphide minerals and subsequently lead to more complicated reactions on the surface of sulphides. Actually some of the phenomena observed in sulphide flotation are deemed to be more appropriately explained from the electrochemical point of view. The author and co-workers have studied extensively the electrode reactions of pyrite and its significance in sulphide flotation. The results have been partly published elsewhere (2-7). In this paper, the author discusses the electrochemical nature of pyrite, and the three different phenomena observed in pyrite flotation: (1) Xanthate¬dixanthogen system on pyrite, (2) Flotation of complex sulphide ores containing pyrite and (3) Depressive mechanisms of pyrite with cyanide. The phenomenon which has been known as an iron contamination effect due to steel grinding media on sulphide flotation is also explained from the electrochemical aspect. However, this problem is not directly concerned with pyrite, and it will be discussed elsewhere (8).

Long range transport of pollutants, particularly of sulphur dioxide and the associated acidic precipitation, has received much attention in the press and in international discussion during the last few years. Studies revealing increasing acidity of lakes and the dying out of fish populations over broad regions of the eastern half of North America have created alarm. In this paper, I will not attempt a description of the acid rain phenomenon. For this r recommend the balanced treatment of the subject by Gene Likens et al (1979) in Scientific Americana For my purposes I accept that the problem is serious and direct my attention to exploring a solution. Ultimately, the key lies in the answer to the question; "What do we do with the enormous tonnages of pollution abatement byproducts, chiefly sulphur compounds, that would arise from pollution control?"' Little thought has been given to this most limiting factor to environmental clean-up. This is symptomatic of a basic flaw in the [philosphy] that under-ins environmental policy. Although this paper is to propose a solution to the abatement byproduct problem, the basic flaw - the firmly entrenched, universally adopted, 'polluter pays [philosphy] as it is currently [understood] - needs some comment.

Introduction From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modern applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is also called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as nonswelling bentonite or southern bentonite. Swelling bentonite is recognized for its rapid hydration of interlayer sodium and subsequent dramatic expansion up to more than 20 times its original volume. Low shear can then disperse the hydrated sodium bentonite to form suspensions that increase viscosity and suspend solids. However, when shear is subsequently eliminated a sodium bentonite slurry gels. Characteristically, nonswelling calcium bentonite has relatively poor hydration properties and thus low expansion of the clay mineral. When subjected to low shear, calcium bentonite exhibits very little viscosity and poor suspension. Additionally, when shear is subsequently eliminated no more than minimal gelling takes place. The domestic and export markets related to both swelling and nonswelling bentonite are discussed below.

The solution of the problem of beneficiation of cassiterite from its primary ore deposits is of fundamental importance to Bolivia. The process today involves a gravimetric treatment of the ore followed by sulphide flotation. During the last year, a cassiterite flotation stage has been added in several plants to treat the slime tailings. Although cassiterite flotation is already economical for the slime tailings and the mechanism of the process are understood, it is felt that further research could improve the results. In the past, considerable amount of research and test ark has been performed to select appropriate collectors to improve recovery, to increa¬se the grade of tin in the concentrate, to minimize the effect of metallic ions like Ca+2, Fe+2 and Fe+3 which prevent flotation, and to increase the pH of the pulp which now it can not be higher than 3.0. It has been reported that the halogen salts (1) like NaCl exhibit special surface affinity for cassiterite but none for quartz. These effect seems to be favourable for the selective flotation of cassiterite from silica minerals. In view of these preliminary results it was decided to follow the research accordingly: OBJECTIVES The objectives of the present investigation are: 1. 0 evaluate the influence of NaCl salts in quartz and cassiterite flotation.

Chemical and mineralogical data on 25 apatitic phosphate ores of diverse origins from commercial deposits around the world were widely variable. From 14 to 18 chemical constituents of each sample were determined, and each sample contained 4 to 10 mineral phases. Altogether there were 34 different mineral phases, many of which occurred in only one sample. The samples contained varieties of francolites, fluorapatites, and mixed hydroxyl-fluorapatites. The apatite compositions calculated from the chemical data showed that certain types of substitutions were characteristic of different apatite varieties, but every variety had some degree of substitution of (CO3)2 for (PO4)3 and the P2O5 contents of the apatites ranged from 35.1% for a North Carolina apatite to 41.9% for a Missouri apatite. In a concentrate with a grade of 32% P2O5, the North Carolina sample should contain about 8.7% gangue and the Missouri sample about 23.7% gangue. To optimize the digestion process of a phosphate are, it is necessary to consider the dissolution behavior of the different mineral phases during acidulation and the effects they may have on the chemical properties of a fertilizer intermediate. In the production of wet-process acids or superphosphates, the acidulation of certain minerals may cause foaming and formation of sludge, filtration, corrosion, and handling problems.

This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1986. Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle. The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that total containment was no longer applicable and therefore studies were undertaken to characterize the tailings, to evaluate the effectiveness of natural degradation of contaminants in the tailings pond and to determine what additional treatment steps would be necessary to meet the requirements of the mine's Water Licence. These studies indicated that arsenic and cyanide concentrations in the tailings pond decant water would not meet Water Licence discharge limits unless certain measures were under taken. As a result of this work, in late 1984 a decision was made to create a two-ponds-in-series system and the necessary civil work was started in 1985. In addition, a series of dykes were constructed to contain the solids portion of the mill tailings in a confined area of the first pond. To remove cyanide, the ponds are operated in a sequential fill and decant mode to take maximum advantage of natural degradation. For arsenic removal, a chemical feed system was constructed for iron salt addition to the decant stream from the first to the second pond. Decanting of the ponds is accomplished by means of a series of 500 mm (20 inch) Sclairpipe syphons.
