The central Dodoma region of Tanzania is one of the regions defined by the Tanzania Craton (TC). Although the Craton gold mineralization has been well explored and hosts most of the gold deposits in the country, the understanding of the mineralization potential of the Dodoma region is still an enigma. This study using trace elements geochemistry of soil samples aims basically at providing information for future exploration works in the region by delineating the possible mineralized zones, the pathfinder elements, and the lithological facies to target. Generally, there is an anomalous spatial distribution of a probable Cu-Au deposit in the N, NE, S, and SE parts of the region and are prospective areas worth exploring for gold from the Gaussian variogram models. The multivariate statistics shows that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Fe are the main pathfinder elements while searching for Au mineralization in the region. The gold deposit is most probably a Cu-Au porphyry type, although VMS type of Au deposit cannot be precluded in the area. The mineralization in the area is largely associated with tonalitic orthogenesis, tonalities, granodiorite, and granitic rocks with Cr-Ni-Co-V forming elemental association. This elemental association is similar to other gold bearing greenstone belts. The style of mineralization in the Dodoma region is similar to other gold deposits within the TC; hence, successful exploration methods in these ancient gold deposits like Geita and Kahama gold deposits can be adopted in the event of any further exploration exercise in the central Dodoma region.

It is proposed that battery grade Mn02 can be produced directly from a manganese ore from Azul Mine in Brazil, by leaching with HCI to remove heavy metals selectively. We are working to find a way of selectively separating Cu, Ni, Co, Pb and Fe from the resulting acidic manganese chloride solution, to detoxify it and produce marketable chloride solution. Chelating ion exchange resins are proving more promising for this separation than solvent extraction with commercially available reagents. Results from batch and column ion exchange tests that characterize the behavior of copper, nickel, cobalt, lead and iron are reported.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

The increase in depth of mines due to the depletion of surface deposits leads to unsafe tunnel construction and overall ore extraction. This is due to tunnel instability associated with the surrounding rock mass’s ability to exhibit creep that occurs over time. However, the explicit description of this mechanism using conventional constitutive models has proven to be difficult and inadequate. Hence, this paper presents an integrated viscoelastic viscoplastic visco-damage model with the Duvaut-Lions function. The presented model is calibrated by experimental data to determine the viscoelastic viscoplastic and visco-damage parameters. It is further implemented in a finite volume numerical code and verified on an experimental scale by numerical modeling of a cylindrical specimen. It describes the 3-phase creep mechanism perfectly as compared to the inbuilt conventional integer-order derivative model. Results from the conducted verification show that it can successfully be employed to describe the long-term behavior associated with the creep mechanism.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into feasibility stage ore reserve estimates is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. Relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMU's) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

Results of regional analyses of precious metal habits in Arizona ores lead to interpretations of a fundamental ore control related to geographic location that corresponds with crustal contrasts. Measurements of isotopic and trace element characteristics of Laramide ore-related intrusions lead to interpretations of crustal derivation of apparent ore-related magmas. Interpreted regionally, the numerous kinds of Laramide ores, which include porphyry copper deposits of this southern cordilleran region appear to be phenomena of a specific crustal lithology characterized by a basement of Proterozoic turbidites and (an interpreted) lower crust of amphibolite. This association with a specific basement terrane may be extended in principle from the United states into Mexico where faulted offsets of this basement are similarly favorable to formation of Laramide porphyry ores -to the exclusion of adjacent terranes. Whereas plate tectonic mechanisms may have triggered evolution of these ores, it is hypothesized here that crustal setting and crustal composition are more profound influences of metallogenesis.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has had an ongoing interest in developing new reagent schemes for floating Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. Previous reagent schemes have been unsuccessful in achieving complete separation, primarily because little is known about the surface chemistry of the minerals in this ore. In order to design a rational reagent scheme, a study of the binding of various functional groups (R = -H, -OH, -CO2H, -NH2) on the two components (chromite and forsterite) of the Stillwater chromite was undertaken. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy was used to determine the adsorption isotherm, from a cyclohexane solution, of spin-probes which contained the functional group of interest. This was complemented by studies of the saturation surface coverage of the spin probe on the two minerals. In each case, more sites existed on chromite than forsterite; however, the forsterite sites were more strongly binding for each functional group. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for flotation.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. During the winter months of late 1985 and early 1986, residents along Dry Fork near Grundy, Virginia (United States) experienced seismic events that they attributed to longwall mining at Island Creek Corporation’s (Island Creek) Virginia Pocahontas Mine No. 3 (VP-3 mine). Island Creek contacted STS D’Appolonia Ltd. (STSDL) on March 7, 1986, to investigate these events. An STSDL representative, Vincent Scovazzo, interviewed residents of Dry Fork on March 10, 1986. It was noted that only people within a residential structure felt the events they described as house shaking, vibrating walls, and ceramics falling from shelves. STSDL representative installed a blast monitor at a residence. Within 2 days, various events were recorded. Some could be attributed to truck and heavy equipment movement. Eight events had no obvious cause but appeared on resident’s written logs as earthquakes caused by mining. STSDL contacted Utah Geophysical, Inc. who had developed a technique to determine the mode of rock failure using the seismic record. Utah Geophysical was engaged to install and monitor a microseismic network, locate the epicenter of the events, and work with STSDL in determining modes of failure. The network was comprised of six geophones located at five stations. Data was recorded for 24 days from May 20 through June 13, 1986. The data was filtered to eliminate events determined to have an origin other than the longwall panels’ overburden and under-burden. The larger events from this filtered data set were selected and analyzed to determine their hypocenter locations, time of occurrence, magnitudes, and failure mode. Processed data was interpreted, tabulated, and plotted by STSDL to provide information relative to the sources of the seismic vibrations and their possible relationship to the mining operation.

Molybdenite and chalcopyrite are two often-associated minerals. In Quebec, the Gaspe Copper Company, a subsidiary of the Noranda group, currently operates a molybdenite flotation circuit to recover a one percent trace of this mineral in the chalcopyrite concentrate. The low levels of molybdeni 2 preclude the use of flotation to remove molybdenum directly from the ore while scavenging of chalcopyrite concentrate for molybdenite yields a concentrate of the latter of somewhat inadequate quality. Such a situation could possibly best be solved by hydrometallurgical means, if molybdenite could be leached selectively from the chalcopyrite concentrate. Work in the field of extractive metallurgy was initiated about 22 years ago in the laboratory of the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, Quebec. Following a literature search, two objectives were selected. The present talk will outline some of the results obtained to-date and it is hoped the ensuing discussion of the paper can raise questions of immediate assistance to us for the future. First, as an immediate objective of-practical use, the oxidation rates for molybdenite and chalcopyrite in alkaline media would be studied under conditions of possible industrial application. Secondly, the kinetics of mass transfer of gases in pressure reactor are to be studied. Solubility data for various gases in aqueous solutions have been gathered by a few investigators, to mention the work of Pray1, Wadsworth2, Pawlek3 and Gerlach. Scattering in experimental results and discrepancies between authors are ominously present. Kinetics of mass transfer have somewhat been more neglected. A systematic investigation by the school of Berlin has greatly helped in the design of impeller most suitable for gas dispersion, without much reference however to the solid dispersing ability of the various designs. Variables affecting rates of gas transfer to the solution have not been studied. Studies on the aqueous oxidation of sulfide minerals are much more numerous. While molybdenite has been relatively less studied, work has been carried in two areas namely in alkaline oxidation of MoS2 , work performed by Dresher2 and Wadsworth, and in the hypochlorite leach of molybdenite by Bhappu4 and co-workers, These two methods showed appreciable rates of leaching for molybdenite. In general, comparisons between rates of oxidation of this sulfide with that for chalcopyrite have not been made.

The results of the electrokinetic study of the activation of quartz by divalent cations showed that the charge reversal was related to the point at which the cation hydrolyzed. The reversal was not due to the presence of solid hydroxide at the surface of the quartz but due to the charged ions in the solutions. The charge reversal for beryllium at a log molar concentration of 1x10-4 was observed at pH 5 and 9. The quartz was positively charged between a pH reading of 5 to 10. Magnesium at the same log molar concentration did not show a charge reversal from pH 2 to 12. The probable cause of the charge reversal was due to the ionized Be3 (OH)3+3 or Mg (OH)+ . Variations in the electrokinetics of quartz were minimized by heating the sample to 300° C.

This work describes the design, analysis, and comparison of discrete simulation and static spreadsheet models developed to compare the oreflow efficiency of two conveyor-based material handling systems; one approach with a conveyor stream in series and one with parallel conveyor streams. Analysis and comparison indicated that daily rates were significantly affected by random conveyor failures in both designs. The compound effect of random failures limited the effectiveness of long belt assemblies in series, while the parallel conveyor stream design partially alleviated this constraint. The static spreadsheet model predicted a lower average daily oreflow rate for the series conveyor stream design and a higher average daily oreflow rate for the design with parallel conveyor streams when compared to the discrete simulation results. These discrepancies were the product of model sensitivity to operational factors incorporated in the system and provided the opportunity to further use the discrete simulation models for trade-off comparisons and sensitivity breakdowns of mine operating practices and material handling system efficiencies in both the series and parallel belt stream designs

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.

Explosions and fires originated from longwall gob due to the formation of methane-air mixture have been a severe threat to coal miner’s lives.Many numerical studies on coalmine fire and explosion hazards have focused on the airflow in roadways and mine gobs. However, most of these studies isolate the gob from its surrounding roadways, and the network analysis and the CFD method are applied independently tomodel the two classes of airflows. This approach greatly limits the ability of simulatingmine ventilation flow, especially unable to consider the effects of gob boundary conditions on air exchange between the gob and the surrounding airways. An innovative finite tube method (FTM) is developed to couple the one-dimensional mine ventilation network (MVN) and the 2D/3D gob flow field (GFF). In FTM, GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes each of which is formed by any two adjacent stream lines. These tubes, representing the gob’s field flow, connect the MVN into a new coupling network. To solve the coupling model betweenMVN and GFF, an iterative solution technique is developed inwhich the MVN analysis is used to evaluate the boundary pressures for GFF simulation and in turn the FTM feeds the GFF results back to the coupling network. Based on the FTM approach, a model for gas migration in gob has been established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion. A computer program is developed to implement the FTM simulation. An illustrative example with five flow tubes representing the GFF is created to verify the stability and convergence of the FTM solution process. A simulation example also indicates that the accuracy of FTM is improved by 12% compared with previous method. Results of an application case show that the program is capable of quantitatively evaluating the gob’s risk zones prone for spontaneous combustion and gas explosion as well as performing risk analysis for various ventilation scenarios.

Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. In anticipation of this need, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Ohio Coal Development Office, EPRI and others are sponsoring research in several areas of coal preparation, and coal plant designers are beginning to consider more innovative techniques as they configure their flowsheets for plants of the future. Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Construction of the AA Pad reclamation was completed in the fall of 2000. Seeding of the ET cover began in the late fall of 2000 and continued through May of 2001. On Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2002, a large, very localized thunderstorm struck the reclaimed AA Pad site. Eyewitnesses present at the time described a dark storm cloud parked above the site for less than half an hour. Average rainfall intensity was measured to be 122 mm (4.8 inches) per hour and peak rainfall intensity was estimated to be 213 mm (8.4 inches) to 259 mm(10.2 inches) per hour. At the time of the storm, the construction was less than two (2) years old and the vegetation had only a single season of growth. The entire period from the end of construction until the date of the storm was a drought period with below normal precipitation. Other than a few small snowmelt events, there was no precipitation event large enough to produce any significant flow in the channel network. Therefore, the very first significant runoff event was the extreme event of June 1, 2002. The storm essentially represents a large-scale field test of the design concepts used at the AA Pad site. Shortly after the storm, data was collected and analyzed with the intent of learning as much as possible about the performance of the cover system design with the expectation that the newly acquired knowledge might be utilized in future designs to further improve the performance of similar cover systems during extreme events.

A kinetic model for leaching of various metals with different lixiviants in a batch system has been developed. Material balances for reactants and products at the solid/liquid interface were formulated and solutions to these balances were obtained in view of practical conditions. Special emphasis has been given to examine mixed controlled reaction systems where both heterogenous reaction and mass transfer play important role on the overall rate expression. The resulting kinetic expressions for either powder or rotating disc are discussed in light of experimental findings for various metals. Examples of the metal dissolution systems considered in this study include cobalt, nickel, copper and gold in acid, cyanide or ammoniacal solutions.
