The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. The tunnel is currently being mined by using a shielded dual-mode tunnel boring machine (open and close) capable of operating in EPB mode and lined by using a precast concrete segmental tunnel linear with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT is expected to be excavated mainly through shale bedrock of the Georgian Bay Formation, at approximately 50 meters deep. The tunnel crosses a buried bedrock valley in two locations, in the southern portion of the alignment, adjacent to the Don River, and at the northern portion of the alignment approaching the CX-1 shaft. In these two locations, the bedrock cover is expected to be less than 6 meters. The risk of encountering weathered bedrock, significant ground water inflows or surficial soil deposits through these buried valleys was identified during the design phase. The contract required the TBM to be designed with the ability to probe drill ahead of the TBM and convert to EPB mode if necessary, to cross this area. This paper will discuss the additional exploration that was performed by the contractor to identify the extent of this buried valley, the plan going into the zone of potential weathered shale, and the actual conditions encountered.

Recent advances in cloud computing and database technology developed for the Internet of Things offer a different way of working with these critical data sets. Enabling a cloud based, open data structure with high performance data analytics capability presents a compelling improvement in governance and a democratization of ore body knowledge that can lead to automation use cases that support the digitalization of mining.

An overland belt conveyor system is installed for only one reason to save money. It must pay its way on a ton-mile basis over a stated period of time, and do so in competition with other forms of transportation. Such a system with its economies has recently been installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio by Link-Belt Company. Three miles in length, this system carries coal from open pit and underground mining facilities to the Conesville Power Plant of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company. The coal was formerly trucked from the mine direct to the power plant; but over the years the mining operations have moved progressively farther and farther from the plant, making the over-the-road hauling distance correspondingly greater. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. The majority of the coal is recovered by conventional strip mining. Some underground mining` is performed by the high wall method.

Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

"One of the main problems for storing of the tailings is acidity occurrence due to several factors such as existence of sulfuric minerals and also the pollution in seepage waters by mobilization of metal ions, which holds great risks in terms of environmental regulations. Because of these specified reasons, tailing materials to be used in a SPD formula should have comply with some specifications. Among these properties; oxygen content, temperature, matrix suction and pH are the most important parameters. In the study, the relationships between the parameters mentioned are investigated to reveal optimum paste design layout. The lowest amount of seepage water obtained from the paste layers in the pilot cabinet was found as 2150 ml from 3rd layer. As for the maximum seepage water and the average of the all 11 layers were found as 4909 ml from 6th layer and 3273 ml respectively. The reactions occurring according to the oxidation, as seen at seepage water of second and third layers, decreased the pH of system to the under of 7 value. Additionally, when the seepage water of first layer’s EC value is 2.93 mS/cm, the EC value of second layer is increased at 3.54 mS/cm. The other parameters are evaluated with the obtained results of the tests to determine the optimum storing conditions for SPD.INTRODUCTION Conventional waste disposal methods, although widely used, pose great environmental risks. One of the most important issues is acid mine drainage (AMD). Tailings of metallic mines contain heavy metals, aggressive chemicals and hazardous materials. In the presence of oxygen and water, an oxidation reaction can occur, causing a decrease in pH of the environment, and heavy metals that are present in the environment can dissolve easily. Subsequently, heavy metals can pollute underground water basins, creating a great amount of danger for the ecology and potable water resources. Another important risk associated with conventional waste disposal methods is accidents related to the waste dam. Higher volumes of water and tailings (usually 15% solids and 85% water by weight) are sent to waste dams, making it very difficult to control the stability of the dam under conditions such as static and dynamic loads (seismic activities, vibrations caused by blasting, etc.), flooding, and seepage. In case of an accident or failure, the spread of great amounts of mud containing hazardous chemicals and heavy metals can harm the environment of the dam site significantly (Bascetin et al., 2014). In the paste technology, depending on the type of ore, tailings used in the paste mixture can contain sulphide minerals (such as pyrite and pyrrhotite). These minerals are known to be reactive with water and oxygen to produce acidity (sulphuric acid)."

Large quantities of phosphate rock are mined and processed in Central Florida (Figure 1). The phosphate rock from the mines is further processed in "chemical plants" to produce phosphoric acid (Figure 2). A by-product of the processing' of the phosphate rock to produce fertilizer chemicals is an impure form of gypsum referred to as phosphogypsum. For each ton of phosphate rock processed, approximately 1.5 tons of phosphogypsum is produced (Figure 3). The typical method to dispose of this by-product gypsum is to stack it in large piles, locally referred to as gypsum stacks or gypsum fields (Figure 4). These gypsum stacks have been the focus of many studies in recent years in an attempt to identify the potential for ground water and/or air pollution associated with the stacks. This paper attempts to discuss some of the ground water impacts and current attempts to minimize these impacts.

"INTRODUCTIONThe shales of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been known to experience time-dependent deformations (TDD); those initiated by excavation-induced stress relief which progress with time as a function of rock porewater salinity, access to freshwater (or air) of lower salinity, clay and calcite content, and the buildup of swelling pressures within the rock mass. These deformations can induce long-term pressures on shaft walls and tunnel linings, especially if the permanent works are constructed soon after excavation, with very little time delay. This paper presents measurements of time dependent deformation of recent shaft and tunnel projects constructed in the GTA, and draws conclusions regarding the main influences on the TDD. The key input parameters for the numerical predictive model are critically assessed. Projects which are discussed include the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel, Hydro One Midtown Tunnel and Hanlan Feedermain (Contract 3).MECHANISM OF TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATIONExplanation of MechanismThe Georgian Bay Shale unit consists of typically moderately weathered to fresh, grey to dark grey, fine to very fine grained fissile shale interbedded with slightly weathered to fresh grey, fine grained calcareous siltstone and limestone interbeds. There are two distinctive features of the shale in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). One is a high horizontal stress regime, and the second is long-term time dependent swelling behavior which develops when the following factors occur (Lo and Micic, 2010):• Stress relief of the rock mass• Outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid• Availability of fresh waterThe swelling is a consequence of the reduction in confined stress in the rock which occurs upon excavation in combination with a differential gradient in salinity between the saline rock porewater and freshwater or even humid air. Osmotic and diffusive processes result in a decrease in the salinity of the rock porewater achieved by an overall increase in the water content, resulting in volumetric expansion of the shale rock over time. Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

The people within the organization then are empowered to find and to implement solutions quickly, as measured business results demonstrate in case histories of diverse mining challenges around the globe and over the decades.Urgent case for actionThe physics of mining does not change fundamentally over time, but the context in which it operates changes rapidly, periodically requiring a new face of mining. “The New Face of Mining,” which has been used as a metaphor for the campus-wide mineral resources research organization at the University of Arizona, has many facets, including societal, generational, technological, financial and environmental, but at the center, always, is humanity. The New Face of Mining is not necessarily about age, it is about people first imagining and then creating a new future for mining. The challenges facing the global industry evolve from year to year and differ in individual companies or mines at any one time.Quantified outcomes from case studies indicate that a methodology, now also offered annually in a four-day, open-enrollment leadership program tailored to the mining industry, is effective at generating breakthrough results in the mining business. Such challenges range from those with important technical components to others that are mostly social challenges. Our focus, however, is the centrality of people in aligning on and enacting the future of mining. We use the phrase New Face of Mining for leadership and ways to empower people in organizations that commonly are overlooked in the mining industry. Some of the material in this article is based on the ideas of Werner Erhard and on the book by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan (2009), The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life.At Davos, Switzerland in January 1992, nine visionary mining chief executive officers (CEO) gathered to create the Global Mining Initiative. Much has changed in the 26 years since that meeting:• The world GDP has increased from US$25.4 trillion to $75.8 trillion.• The annual number of U.S. patent applications increased from 186,000 to 629,000.• The number of websites has increased from 100 to 1 billion.• The number of academic references to artificial intelligence has climbed from more than 16,000 to more than 1 million.• The number of cell phone subscribers grew from 11 million in the United States to four billion globally."

"Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

"A 2nd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) design was tested by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at a Midwestern underground coal mine. During the study, the roof bolter never operated downwind of the continuous miner. Using a combination of personal Data Rams (pDR) and gravimetric samplers, the dust control efficiency of the roof bolter CAC was ascertained. Performance evaluation was determined using three methods: (1) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to roof bolter concentrations outside the CAC, (2) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter, and finally, (3) using the gravimetric data directly underneath the CAC to correct roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC and comparing them to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter. Method 1 dust control efficiencies ranged from -53.9% to 60.4%. Method 2 efficiencies ranged from -150.5% to 52.2%, and Method 3 efficiencies ranged from 40.7% to 91%. Reasons for negative and low dust control efficiencies are provided in this paper and include: incorrect sampling locations, large distance between CAC and operator, and contamination of intake air from line curtain. Low dust concentrations encountered during the testing made it difficult to discern whether differences in concentrations were due to the CAC or due to variances inherent in experimental dust measurement. However, the analyses, especially the Method 3 analysis, show that the CAC can be an effective dust control device. INTRODUCTION Canopy air curtains (CAC) have been shown to be an effective respirable coal mine dust control for roof bolters in a laboratory setting with dust control efficiencies ranging from 14% up to 75% [Goodman and Organiscak 2001, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. Unfortunately, there is limited information on their effectiveness for controlling respirable coal mine dust in the field. On continuous miners, CAC dust control efficiencies ranged from 23% to 69% [Krisko 1975]. Two underground tests of the CAC on roof bolters demonstrated dust control efficiencies of 35% and 53% [Listak and Beck 2012] before problems occurred with operation of the CAC. Since the implementation of the new respirable coal mine dust limit from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (Code of Federal Regulations, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015), roof bolter CACs are becoming more commonplace in underground coal mines as a dust control tool to prevent roof bolter operator overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. J.H. Fletcher & Co. has been instrumental in delivering an effective design which incorporates the filter, blower, and canopy plenum seamlessly into the design of the roof bolter, resulting in a successful operational roof bolter CAC."

The determination of the surface area which may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors, such as mining width and depth and overburden lithology, on this angle is examined, using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

"Coal mines opting for longwall mining or its variations rely on the main and tail gates for production. Stability of these entries or crosscuts is crucial in coal mining operations. Roof or strata failure can be fatal, may lead to property loss and delay in production. Failure of the gates depends upon many factors including the mining method, panel dimensions, pillar width, mine depth, caving rate, dimensions of gates and roof strength properties. In Pakistan coal is mined through a variation of longwall mining method with almost no mechanization while using timber as a primary support. Timber support as chock is very useful in coal mines especially in overhanging face. Similarly gate entries and coal faces are supported by chock supports throughout their length. In this paper the stability of the longwall gate is assessed for a typical coal mine in Pakistan by using finite element code. Numerical modelling considerations for gate entries are discussed. A model parametric study is performed for key factors. The results showed that the existing mining practice is not suitable and there is a need to review the mining approach. INTRODUCTION Main and tail gate entries leading to longwall mining panel play a crucial role in production cycle. Failure of any of these may lead to loss of life, property and production delays. The stability of gate entries depends primarily on the nature of loading and stresses incurred. It is relatively easier to assess the ground response to production for common longwall mining panel. In thin-seam coal mines the gate entries are generally supported throughout their length by timber made chock supports. The tailgates receive huge deformations and stresses during the mining and backfilling cycle. The chock supports are required to take care of rock falls leading to blockage of entries causing production delays and loss of capital. A number of supports are available for supporting the gate entries (Hoek and Brown 1980; Brady and Brown 1985). The support system can be selected based on load-deformation characteristics including the yielding behavior, pre- and post-yielding behavior (Barczak, 2003). The principal of support selection is that the support characteristics must match the ground response in order to maintain the gate entries (Mucho, et al., 1999). It has been observed that thin-seam mining (<1 m) is very challenging and it is necessary to develop an understanding of ground mechanics before the selection of an efficient support system Dolinar (2003). The chock supports have been tested for load-deformation characteristics in the laboratory (Barczak 2003). But the ground and support interaction, response and loads must be assessed for individual site. This can be accomplished by in-situ testing and observations at few locations. The generated data is generally insufficient for complete understanding. Numerical models can combine the data generated in the laboratory and on-site to fulfill the requirements."

The industrial diamond review arrived too late for the June issue. Since the economy is showing a resurgence of strength, diamond tool consumption is similarly on the rise. Tool makers indicate that sales are picking up. They expect that 1994 will see about an 8% increase. Fabricators expect this positive trend to continue through 1995. In the industrial sector, sales of grinding wheels, honing stones, cutting tools and the like are expected to grow 5% and 8% during the next year. Users still are buying only those products necessary for "just-in-time" production cycles.

The development of renewable energies and a sustainable power grid are the challenges for future energy supply. Underground cables will replace the vulnerable overhead lines, because of their safety benefits. Due to the public environmental awareness, smart tunnelling and trenchless solutions are required for inner-city and cross-country installations of underground cables, as well as for crossings and the landfall sections to connect offshore wind farms to the transmission grid. Methods from the tunnelling and pipeline industry provide a high flexibility in the planning of alignments, including versatile tunnel concepts and the installation of protective pipes with E-Power Pipe and Direct Pipe.
