Tailings disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. Several tailings dam failure accidents have occurred during the past few years and mine tailings dam failures are occurring at relatively high rates. Tailings dam failure is disastrous with the serious damage and the loss of lives. To increase the tailings dam safety, a tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) based on the internet of things and cloud computing platform has been accomplished with the abilities of real-time monitoring of the saturated line, impounded water level, rain fall and the dam deformations etc. The TDMPAS has been applied in several mines in China and helped the mine engineers monitor the tailings dam safety and get warning information automatically and remotely in any kind of weather conditions. This work has been demonstrated the tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) is meaningful to monitor the tailings dam physical safety condition. The TDMPAS could be applied to monitor all the national tailings dams online in the future.

"Some of the weakest roof in United States coal mines is found in the Illinois Basin. Historically, the Illinois Basin has also suffered from high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries. During the past decade, however, roof fall and rock fall injury rates have fallen dramatically, and are now lower than the national average. Several technologies are responsible for the improvement. Roof screen was rarely used ten years ago, but a number of mines now use it on a regular basis to prevent rock falls and rock fall injuries. Other roof skin control fixtures and work practices have contributed as well.The reduction in roof falls is also directly attributed to enhanced intrinsic roof support. Stiffer primary bolting patterns have reduced the magnitude of roof spalling and roof sag. They have also helped create a more intact beam that is able to be suspended from longer cable bolts. Cable bolt design methodology has also contributed to this reduction in roof falls. Some early cable bolt applications were unsuccessful because they employed as few as two cable bolts per intersection. This paper describes a methodology for estimating rock loads for support design.ROOF FALL TRENDS IN THE ILLINOIS BASINAlthough the Illinois Basin has a long history of poor roof conditions and high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries, recent data indicates a change in the trend. Roof fall rates are determined by dividing the total number of non-injury roof falls by the total number of hours worked underground. The data is considered for 200,000-man hours. While the Illinois Basin was once a coalfield experiencing roof falls at nearly twice the national average, it is now at or below the national rate. Figure 1 indicates the trend over the past 20 years. In 2008, the Illinois Basin mines experienced 5.06 roof falls every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.75 in 2018.There has also been a significant reduction in the rate of rock fall injuries in the Illinois Basin coal mines, as shown in Figure 2. In 2008 there were 1.48 rock fall injuries every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.43 in 2018.ILLINOIS BASIN COAL ROOF GEOLOGYThe roof rock in the Illinois Basin has been studied in the past to understand the primary causes of roof failures (Molinda et al., 2008; Thompson, 2010; Molinda and Mark, 2010). Rusnak and Mark (2000) evaluated 10,000 laboratory strength tests from 800 rock units and concluded that for shale, siltstone, and sandstone, the strength of the Illinois Basin variety was less than half that of the same rock types in Central Appalachia (Figure 3). A study of Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) measurements in more than 200 US coal mines also found that weak roof was predominant in the Illinois Basin (Mark and Molinda, 2005)."

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With. Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began aggressively searching for such an opportunity. Early in 1997, production will commence at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1,750-tonne per day open-pit operation that will produce more than 300,000 ounces of gold per year. This paper discusses the challenges of locating such a prospect, doing business in Russia, developing supply lines, identifying work force capabilities, gaining government approvals, securing financing, arranging for gold sales and ultimately building a facility in this arctic region.

The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

The El Sauzal gold-silver deposit is a high-sulfidation, epithermal precious-metals deposit hosted by an east-dipping sequence of dacitic and rhyolitic pyroclastic and debris-flow units of probable Oligocene age. Total gold production since startup in late 2004 is approximately 450,000 oz. of gold. Above the sulfide boundary gold is mainly disseminated as small grains interstitial to alunite, kaolinite and quartz. The majority of the ore is found in quartz-alunite-kaolinite altered rock that mantles tabular to irregular silicic cores of vuggy, residual quartz ±kaolinite ±dickite. Grade domains are modelled as subhorizontal to east and southeast-dipping. Higher-grade domains cut across alteration zones and also coincide with transitions from vuggy quartz to quartz-alunite-kaolinite. The highest grades are commonly found marginal to vuggy quartz in transitional, hematite-rich quartz-kaolinite and quartz-alunite-kaolinite rock.

A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in-situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in-situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in one area of the mine that contains Argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for Argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the other four primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

Building indicators that respond to all stakeholders' needs is a time-consuming and complex exercise, with certain questions still unsolved. The aim of the current three-year research project, carried out in partnership between BRGM’s Mineral Resources Division and C3ED, is to propose a top-down / bottom-up indicators building methodology that combines conception and coordination methods and a participative approach. The tool-design phase is based partly on a comparative analysis of existing international initiatives according to different criteria (objective, observation scale, framework, etc.). The study of two African mining projects will provide the opportunity to confront the conceptual aspects with reality in the field. Careful consideration of the participants’ suggestions will result in a set of indicators that can be easily understood and adopted by all stakeholders. The final objective is to measure the impact of a mining site on a local, regional and national sustainable development frame, throughout the full life cycle of a mine.

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

Environmental Considerations With significant increases in bulk coal movements through terminals, operators are under constant social and political pressure to reduce or remove environmental pollution problems incidental to their operations. To meet these requirements, both equipment manufacturers and terminal designers are endeavoring to design equipment and systems with stringent environmental controls. The most challenging environmental problems facing coal terminal designers and developers are terminal siting restrictions, dust control, and noise abatement. Terminal Siting Finding a suitable site can be a difficult problem because of public concern over coal dust or the impact of a terminal on the surrounding community or natural habitat of the area. Often the only suitable flat land available for terminal development is on a tidal estuary or salt water marsh with great environmental value. In many cases a period of four to six years of full environmental and social assessment has been needed. A recent example of such difficulties is the expansion at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, where environmental impact assessment studies and their public review took almost six years from initial expansion applications until the time of approval. Dust Control Modern coal terminal dust control techniques usually consist of water sprays at strategic locations to suppress dust. The application points include rail car or barge dumper, main conveyor transfers, perimeter sprays around stockpiles, stacker/reclaimer, ship-loader transfers, and loading spout. The water sprays may include a chemical wetting agent or surfactant to reduce the water requirement and increase effectiveness. Recently there have been advances with development of effective micro foam agglomerating agents. In these systems, a micro foam with very small bubble sizes is sprayed into the coal stream. The foam fills the interstices between coal particles and wets the coal fines. These systems have proven to be very effective and usually one application before stockpiling and one upon reclaiming will markedly reduce the coal dusting. Stockpile perimeter sprays can be operated either manually or at the sophisticated terminal, actuated by a computerized control system that senses key environmental conditions such as humidity, precipitation, and wind velocity. Most modern terminals collect the drainage from the stockpile area, remove the solids in settling basins, then recirculate the water to reduce water requirements and effluents from the site. Dusting of long-term storage stockpiles can be reduced by spraying the piles with chemical resin or latex binding compounds to seal the surface. These compounds also can minimize erosion of the pile by rainfall. Dust collection with air evacuation systems and cyclone or wet scrubbers can be used at key areas such as rail car dumpers, main conveyor transfers, and ship-loader spouts. The trend in dust control is away from dust collection since most dust collectors are high maintenance items requiring good operator supervision and servicing. Coal handling conveyors are usually open and uncovered. However, in areas requiring special attention they may be covered or even completely enclosed. Dust generation from terminal roads is often a significant amount of the total dust emitted from a terminal. To reduce this dusting, roadways where traffic is heavy can be paved or sprayed by water trucks. Speed limits can be enforced and use of tracked mobile equipment for stockpile handling rather than rubber-tired loaders is encouraged by authorities. Noise Abatement Terminals located close to residential areas are often faced with noise control problems. Noise can be one of the most difficult environmental problems to solve. Usually, use of electrically-powered equipment is encouraged to reduce noise levels. Rail car dumper houses can be totally enclosed to reduce both dust and noise emissions. Strategic alignment throughout a mining organization is critical to effective strategic execution and good business performance. The alignment of strategic goals and objectives in the different operations and functions in a large global operation is a challenge facing executive management in light of legacy organizational structure and processes. An additional confounding factor in strategic alignment of acquisition and new project expansion is that mining projects and operations are frequently multi-cultural in terms of country origin as well as organizational culture. This brings together many cultures to accomplish the project or complete an acquisition (Financial Times, 2006). The mining industry presents numerous challenges to executives and mine management by the nature of the operation and organizational processes used in running it. For example, there seems to be an inherent conflict between the individual goals of the components that constitute a mineral processing operation (the mine, the mill, the smelter and the refinery), and lowest cost production of the final product. Managers of these component operations have specific objectives passed down from the corporate executives. Those site managers tend to be compensated based on throughput and perform to this main metric. This tendency to maximize throughput for an individual operation can contradict the general process flow of a best-fit solution to producing the final product at the lowest cost. In an effort to become more aligned, firms are increasingly using balanced scorecard derivatives at great cost and effort (whether internally or externally sourced) in an attempt to help with strategic alignment. Balanced score-cards have been effective in providing a good strategic scorecard to companies with some measure of strategic alignment. Many firms make this effort of using balanced scorecards. However, most firms are not strategically aligned or, at best, are sub-optimized, in terms of strategic alignment (Kaplan and Norton, 2006). The tendency in mining operations is to focus on operating individual components as optimally as possible and stretching existing assets to the best possible production rates. ?Making tons? is the common operational focus. Numerous factors underpin this focus and can affect the ability of the operation?s ability to align properly with the corporate strategy and strategic goals. Critical factors are legacy organizational structure, culture, processes and performance measurement systems. Changing anyone of these factors to affect better strategic alignment requires significant attention to managing change.

Vast improvement in methods of design and analysis of the long- term stability of overburden above room and pillar mines is needed. Improved methods are vital for planning and land development and for prediction above existing, presently stable, room and pillar mines. As shown on the flow chart in [Figure 1], the assessment of the long-term stability is an integral part of the site investigation process regarding mitigation of surface damage effects. In Illinois, flat farmlands with subjacent coal reserves cover vast areas. In some of these areas high extraction of the underlying coal layer(s) may not be possible since the resulting surf ace subsidence combined with a pre-existing shallow water table would make the land too wet. Thus recovery of this coal might only be accomplished by room and pillar mining where the ground surface does not subside and the hydraulics of the overburden are not significantly affected.

The Queens Bored Tunnels consist of 11,000 feet of 19'-6" inside diameter tunnels mined through rock, mixed face and dense glacial till, constructed with bolted gasketed one pass reinforced concrete liner. The tunnels are to be excavated with a pressurized face TBM, either EPB or slurry. The construction of the tunnels will require ground stabilization in the mixed face area, instrumentation and monitoring of railway infrastructure, underpinning of bridges, relocation and protection of utilities, demolition of some industrial buildings, construction of open-cut approach tunnels and emergency exits and vent plants. The purpose of this paper is to describe the scope of work, the suggested methodology and the proposed construction schedule.

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

Federal standards for refuge alternatives (RAs) mandate that they not exceed a Steadman apparent temperature (AT) of 95 °F (35 °C) at an assumedmetabolic rate of 325W, a limit that appears to be arbitrary. Occupants in an RA spend most of their time at rest (a metabolic rate less than 325 W), and thermal equilibrium can likely be maintained at an AT > 35 °C. The purpose of this study was to examine the upper limit of sustainable heat stress during 4- and 8-h exposures at rest. Five men underwent five 4-h trials (phase 1: AT range 39 to 49 °C, 90% rh) and five 8-h trials (phase 2: AT range 46 to 56 °C, 90% rh) in a semi-recumbent position. Descriptive statistics for gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), sweat rate, fluid intake, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), and changes in body mass are reported. Mean Tgi for all trials ranged from 36.9 to 37.3 °C, and mean HR for all trials ranged from 61 to 75 bpm. To determine the effects of increased heat exposure, differences in heat strain between 4- and 8-h trials were examined via repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). As AT increased, there were no significant changes in ?Tgi and ?HR from 1 to 4 h in the 4-h and 8-h trials. During the 8-h trials, as AT increased, there was a difference in ?Tgi between 4 and 8 h. In conclusion, there was support for sustainable exposures resulting in no significant increase in physiological strain at an AT greater than 35 °C AT, with a sustainable limit (no increases in Tgi due to increases in AT) below 46 °C AT. Although the participants were not representative of coal miners, the results provide support for sustainable exposures greater than 35 °C AT at an average metabolic rate of 155 W.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, NIOSH conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the research, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This document highlights NIOSH&apos;s research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers, and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan, and if appropriate training is provided. The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
