A novel dry and wet air dust filter concept was conceived and demonstrated successfully at two mines. A steel-wool and a fiberglass filter, suitable for underground use were identified through laboratory testing and demonstrated in the mine. The steel wool filter was operated with and without water sprays while the fiberglass filter was only operated in the dry mode. The dry steel wool filter provided a dust capture of 37% at a negligible pressure drop. When fine misting water sprays were used on the steel wool filter, the dust capture increased to 51% again with a negligible pressure drop. The filter screen also remained clean and no change in air flow characteristics was observed as a function of time. The dry fiberglass filter however did not perform as well achieving only 11% dust capture while introducing a significant resistance to air flow. This technology is seen to have several applications in underground coal mines.

Two complex copper concentrates and one arsenical nickel concentrate were oxidized in simulated flash smelting conditions using a laminar-flow furnace. The concentrates contained tetrahedrite as Sb-bearing mineral and arsenopyrite and gersdorfite as As-bearing minerals. At high temperatures and low oxygen potentials, Sb tended to vaporize, but with high oxygen potentials it was captured in mixed oxide phases with copper and iron. Arsenic was found to follow antimony in copper concentrates, although with less sharp contrast between low and high oxygen potentials. In the nickel concentrate studied, arsenic was found to vaporize from the gersdorffite particles and, subsequently, condense on the other particles.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two of the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes, 110- and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Aquatic organisms are sensitive to free cyanide (HCN) though the presence of certain metals that can form stable complexes and thereby reducing both the amount of bioavailable cyanide. Recent work has suggested that consideration of HCN rather than total cyanide can provide the basis for water quality criteria. Cyanide is often present in complex effluents that affect speciation and bioavailability. We have developed a model to predict the speciation of cyanide in complex effluents and have shown that this model can predict the toxicity of metal-cyanide complexes in terms of HCN. This study evaluated available cyanide toxicity exposures with this model to assess the role of water chemistry (e.g., metal-cyanide interactions) on the observed. Toxicity endpoints based on total cyanide ranged over several orders of magnitude for a variety of metal-cyanide mixtures. However, predicted HCN concentrations among these same tests described the observed toxicity data to within a factor of 2. Aquatic toxicity can be well described using HCN though in certain metal-cyanide mixtures toxicity was jointly described by HCN and elevated levels of bioavailable metals. This work was performed in support of an industry-sponsored reassessment (Gensemer et al 2006) of the U.S. EPA water quality criteria for cyanide (EPA 1985) using free cyanide as the basis for the re-calculation. The work presented in this manuscript presents technical support for using free cyanide as the preferred basis for this recalculation.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society&apos;s Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC&apos;s Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society&apos;s business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth&apos;s mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society&apos;s specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. Seismic tomography is one of several additions to the suite of geotechnical engineering tools for use in various underground rock and mineral geologic structures. Seismic tomography is a method for reconstructing a cross section of an object based on attributes of seismic energy that have been transmitted through the object. The in-seam seismic tomogram provides a dataset that can be graphically portrayed in a color-coded format that is then used to infer relative stress concentration (Fig. 1). During the past several years, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) at its Denver, CO and Twin Cities Research Centers in Minnesota funded several innovative hardware and software developments. These were directed toward use of in-seam seismic tomography for underground geologic strata evaluations. These preliminary investigations have matured into well-defined and field-proven technical advances for improving ground-control decision making in the mining industry.

Current design guidelines for the surface catalysed oxidation of Fe(II) on Fe(OH)3 (Ochre) in passive mine water treatment systems are based largely on empirical data as the details of rates and mechanisms have not fully been revealed. Also the effects of elevated carbonate concentrations, typical of many UK minewaters, on the surface catalysed oxidation rate are unclear. In order to move away from empirical design and towards sound engineering that is based on geochemical and hydrological understanding it is necessary to quantify these reaction rates. In this study the effects of Fe(OH)3 and carbonate on the rate of Fe(II) oxidation by dissolved oxygen have been investigated with an aim to delineate the reaction mechanism. Experiments were conducted under well-controlled conditions. Preliminary results indicate that the surface catalysed reaction is an order of magnitude faster at pH ~6.4 with 200 mg/l Fe(OH)3 than the homogeneous rate and is dominated by an elevated rate of removal and oxidation of Fe(II) from the solution phase. It is also apparent that the oxidation rate of actual adsorbed Fe(II) is substantially retarded with respect to the homogeneous rate. Carbonates were not shown to affect the surface rate within the bounds of this preliminary study.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960&apos;s, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan&apos;s growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.&apos; As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada&apos;s output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 Mpa (3000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 Mpa (100 psi).

This paper discusses the geotechnical instrumentation program on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, in Boston, Massachusetts. Particular attention is given to a state of the art Graphic Information System (GIS) application which has been developed for rapid analyses and reporting of data. This application will see extensive use during the ongoing complex downtown tunnel construction. The excavations in soft ground require cuts of up to 120 feet deep and 250 feet wide. Deformation and groundwater monitoring instruments have been installed to monitor the stability of the excavation support systems and the abutting buildings. The use of this application is illustrated with an example from an ongoing contract.

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

The conversion of organic matter to petroleum by hydrothermal activity is an easy process, occurring in nature in many types of environments. Geologically immature organic matter of marine sediments is being altered by this process in Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California), Escanaba Trough and Middle Valley (northeast Pacific), Bransfield Strait (Antarctica), and Atlantis 11 and Kebrit Deeps (Red Sea). Contemporary organic detritus and viable microorganisms are also converted in part to petroleum-like products by the same process when present to become entrained, as for example on the East Pacific Rise at 13o N and 21o N and on the mid-Atlantic Ridge at 26oN. The hydrocarbon products (methane to asphalt) generated in all these areas have been elucidated in terms of composition, organic matter sources, and analogy to reservoir petroleum. This petroleum represents a major input of carbon to the primary chemosynthetic productivity of hydrothermal vent systems and may be important to interactions with metals in hydrothermal ore formation.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout&apos;s instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

At present, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation of mine projects in surface coal mining. One of the major reasons for that is its ability to take into account the time effect of money over the life-of-mine. As a looking-forward method, it requires forecasts be made with regard to economic, technological, technical, geological, and environmental conditions that will prevail in the future. All forecasts are inherently uncertain as they are a function of the uncertainty of all variables of the discounted cash flows analysis. This indicates that the only alternative for modeling the uncertainty in the project evaluation is the development of adequate risk models to serve the decision-making process. The paper offers a model of project cash flows at risk in strip coal mining, which is an integrated corporate risk management solution. The model is based on a stochastic approach that provides the answer to the question about how large is the deviation between stochastic cash flows and the planned value (or that used in the budget) at each time step of the discounted cash flows analysis, that is due to the uncertainty in the model variables. A solution is worked out for the allowable range of the stochastic cash flows variation that determines the probability of achieving the planned value of a mine project. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to model the stochastic behavior of the project variables. A case study of an opencast coal mine project is provided to illustrate the applicability of the risk model. The results obtained provide a new understanding of the mine project risk as a component of the project discount rate.

Author?s note: Diversity in practice exists in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for purchase price allocations with respect to the recognition of Value Beyond Proven and Probable Reserves or VBPP, as defined by the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) in EITF 04-3: ?Mining Assets: Impairment and Business Combinations?. This diversity appears to arise from differing interpretations of what constitutes sufficient information to value components of VBPP in business combinations. Concerned with this diversity in practice, respected members of the mining community formed a working group which prepared an issues paper that discussed this diversity and provided recommendations for recognition and valuation of VBPP in business combinations. The working group then submitted this paper to the EITF, requesting further guidance be issued on the concept of VBPP. In conjunction with the submission to the EITF, the working group also provided this paper to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review and comment. The EITF discussed this issue at its May, 2008 agenda committee meeting. However, it declined to add this topic to the EITF agenda for further consideration. Absent additional guidance on VBPP from the EITF, the working group submitted a proposed definition of VBPP to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its consideration. The following article, which is consistent with the issues paper that was submitted to the EITF and the SEC, discusses the components of and valuation techniques for VBPP. The correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which includes the proposed definition of VBPP by the working group, is attached as Appendix 1 to this article.
