Mining project feasibility is projected from a geological model and a mining plan. Ore grade is assumed to be continuous, based on drill hole assays as much as 80 m apart. Eighty meter is 80,000,000 micron. Base metal concentrators may be said to work at 80 micron, for flotation at least. In short, metallurgical and financial performance in green field metal mining is forecast on rejecting waste after comminuting the ore down by roughly a volume factor of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1018) from the feasibility/banking study parameters. This is the gap between mine and mill, between present sulphide mining practices and mineral dressing capabilities, and ultimately between lenders/shareholders expectations and mine/mill performance. By inserting a new upgrading technology in this gap, new opportunities for reserve enhancement and cost reduction are created, and risk could be reduced. Blast holes for extracting the outlined ore might be 8 m apart. Most ore bodies do not abruptly change composition at 8 m intervals; nor are they homogeneous in grade at the 8 cm (3?) rock size, optimum size for sorting. Mining in 8 m blocks will inevitably cause dilution of the mill feed and ore losses in the waste rock. This is well recognized in the mining industry. Much work is going on applying the vast data storage and manipulation capability of computers to mine scheduling. One only has to consult the SME Annual Meeting presentations. At the 2007 Meeting, Clark and Dagdelen described the challenges faced by Newmont at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to mining optimization. Block models can often contain in excess of one million blocks. Additional complexity exists when multiple grades are modeled for each block. The authors identify the main optimization problem as the system?s ability to cater to large scale problems in an acceptable timeframe; in other words, still larger computers are needed. At the same Meeting, Menabde et al (2007) presented a new pit development planning tool called Blasor, developed by BHP Billiton Technology, and its co-developed Blasor IPD (In Pit Dumping), (Zuckerberg et al (2007)). For purposes of this paper, Blasor/IPD incorporates options on processing capacity constraints and blending targets, eliminating arbitrary up-front decisions about cutoff grades for each block of material in the extraction sequence.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

A modeling, simulation and optimization study of a complex industrial fluorspar beneficiation plant (Kadipani, Gujarat, India) with fourteen/ten flotation banks is carried out to find an optimum/near-optimum circuit for the given quality of feed ore. The phenomenological flotation model developed by Mehrotra and Kapur (1974) is used for circuit optimization. Two different optimization problems are formulated and solved. The first optimization problem involves a single objective function, which uses available plant data to estimate the feed-characterizing parameters, i.e., the flotation rate constants, by minimizing the weighted sum-of-square errors between the computed and plant values. The second optimization problem involves two objective functions to obtain several simplified circuits. The number of non-linking streams and the overall recovery of the concentrate, i.e., the acid-grade product, are maximized simultaneously in this problem. The single-objective variant (SGA-II-mJG) of the binary-coded elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm with the jumping gene adaptation, NSGA-II-mJG, is used for the first problem, while NAGA-II-mJG (Guria et al., 2005 a) is used for the second problem. Simplified circuits with a few split streams are proposed on the basis of the present optimization study, which enhance the recovery of the acid-grade product without affecting its quality, for a given total volume of the flotation cell-bank. Even though the optimal solutions have certain drawbacks, they suggest a meaningful direction in using an iterative fitting of parameters to such optimal circuits, followed by re-optimization. It is only recently that automation has been applied to mining analytical laboratories. This paper describes the use of automation in the laboratory analytical process of hard-rock mining and geological samples and slurries in mining concentrator plant process control laboratories. Types of analysis include fire assay, XRF, ICP and wet chemistry. The benefits of automation are reduced unit cost of analyses, greatly reduced staff requirements, higher quality of data and very fast turn-around times.

Fully mechanized longwall mining with large mining heights (LMHs) in shallow-depth thick coal seams has been widely applied in Shenfu coalfield, China. Dynamic loading and rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face experiences periodic weighting in shallow coal seams. The advanced breaking position (fracturing ahead of the face) in the roof affects the strength of the mine pressure (weighting) when the roof is broken. Based on the theory of the “elastic foundation beam,” this paper presents a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof, including a predictive formula. In an attempt to verify the formula, a field program consisting of multiple-point borehole extensometers installed in the roof in advance of the longwall face was performed in the No. 22201 working face of Zhangjiamao coal mine in the Shenfu mining area, China. The field measurement results show that the roof movement of the LMH working face is detected prior to roof pressure increase, and that the roof breaks approximately 5–8 m ahead of the face. This compares with a calculated value of 6.9 m, indicating that the formula developed in this research is reliable and should have application in predicting roof pressure associated with LMH working faces in shallow coal seams.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost more than $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high costs make extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. Operations research techniques are used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate, over 35%, of the total US longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation was used to generate models of transfers under Carving conditions; and the economic feasibility of tine-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure was investigated.

Continuous developments in tunneling require knowledge transfer between designers and suppliers to optimize the application of support systems. This collaboration allows the designer access to the latest research results, technical innovations, and support specific measurement techniques as well as the supplier?s experiences on recent projects. Project specific requirements determine the information that can be used to increase support system efficiency, advance rate, degree of safety, or decrease costs. This cooperative effort results in not only an unambiguous tender document, but also an optimized design with reduced risk that is coordinated with safe and high performance construction techniques. This paper will address the benefits of an early collaboration to both the design and the specifications in the tender document by using the A3 Hindhead project (UK) as an example.

An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. The discovery of a major porphyry-type copper deposit on the Papago Indian Reservation in Pinal County, Arizona was announced by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1968. The deposit, known as the Lakeshore Property, contained an estimated 470 million tons of sulfides and oxides averaging 0.75 percent copper. History and Geology of the area have been described by Harper and Reynolds (1969). Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in effort put to tracking progress toward sustainability. Many aspects of society are participating in this “movement” including mining. The drivers are diverse and include evolving ideas in business and public administration as well as concerns for human well-being, community robustness, environmental integrity, and overall social and ethical responsibility. The scale in question varies greatly from local to global. For the most part, there has been a pre-occupation with developing discrete measurable signals. This paper argues that the overwhelming focus on the quantitative is ill-advised and that a more effective approach is to bring together the best of both quantitative and qualitative. The mining industry in particular is well-placed to affect this shift and reap the associated benefits.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

For the 22nd year, the chance to exchange knowledge, experience and business cards drew hundreds of mining and phosphate professionals for a two-day regional Phosphate Conference in Lakeland, Florida Nearly 400 people participated in the October conference, which focused on the phosphate industry?s future success. There were 41 exhibitors, 13 program advertisers and 23 sponsors among those supporting the conference. It was chaired by David Gossett, 2006-2007 SME Florida Section Chairman. In the opening panel session that he chaired, John Garlanger (SME) of Ardaman and Associates posed the questions; ?How successful has the industry been? How do we measure it and what factors contributed to the industry?s success? How long will the ethanol boom last? Can the industry obtain the permits it needs to mine for the next 30 years? Can the industry attract and retain the quality of workers it needs??

The combined 79th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 67th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 11 and 12, 2006, in Duluth, MN. About 300 mining professionals attended, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s theme was “Success in the New World of Mining.” The SME Minnesota Section meeting included a keynote session, a special projects update, a general managers update and technical paper presentations. The University of Minnesota Mining Symposium program featured a panel discussion on Minnesota’s relationship with China. The combined meeting included a trade-show consisting of 64 booth spaces. Tradeshow demand exceeded expectations, and an additional 10 booth spaces were added in the registration lobby. Also included were an SME short course on pump basics and social events.

An experimental system has been designed to monitor on-line variations of leaching parameters in a closed circuit of cyanide leaching solutions and gold bearing ores. Experiments performed to deter-mine variations in some important leaching parameters of the solution: pH, dissolved oxygen, free cyanide, oxidation/reduction potential, gold content, temperature, pressure and solution chemistry. By comparing results obtained when the leaching solution is allowed to become acid or kept basic, it was possible to infer the chemical reactions that occurred between the solution and the ores.

The Dos Pobres Mine is a copper oxide heap-leach mine located near Safford, Arizona. Mine production is 180,000 tons (163,293 tonnes) per day with a stripping ratio of 2:1. During the startup phase of the mine, the required fragmentation size was easy to achieve as the ore was highly weathered and fractured near the surface. As the mine depth increased, the proper fragmentation size became harder to achieve due to less weathering and different rock types. Because copper recovery increases as crusher product size decreases, achieving the appropriate product size at the crusher is the operating priority. The Engineering Department started a project to improve fragmentation through blasting and thus increase throughput in the crushing system. It soon became clear that input from other departments was going to be required to make this a safe and economical project. Therefore the Crush and Convey and Ore Control departments worked together to evaluate all available data on blast patterns and explosive loads and tracked performance and results. Using image analysis, Drill Energy Index and databases, we have been able to improve fragmentation size and verify the results while controlling costs.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modelled with conditional simulation which generates multiple possible realisations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable) to occur. Methods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modelling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimisation, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially software. An example for Resolute Mining Ltd?s Syama Gold Project in Mali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

For the past six years, the author has made it a priority to attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual conference. This most recent meeting took place March 10-13, 2002in Toronto, Ontario. In the three years since the author’s last PDAC report, the mining industry has undergone a severe trough. Some the industry’s woes included deeply discounted commodity prices, rampant layoffs, mergers, and overall avoidance by the investment community. However, at each of the PDAC conferences, the author has felt a heightened sense of excitement about the mining industry, more so than at other similar gatherings.
