The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

Estimation of high grade epithermal vein deposits can present challenges in correctly representing the continuity of grade within an undulating structure. One solution to this problem is to use dynamic anisotropy to follow local variations in the strike and dip of veins. Dynamic anisotropy (D.A.) allows the search parameters to change block by block throughout the model to account for the local variations. Presented here is a study of a vein that changes orientation down-dip. A traditional resource estimate using one search ellipse orientation was performed. The resulting estimated grades did not accurately reflect those of the sample data. Using a search ellipse with an average value for the two distinct dips caused the grade estimation to be less representative than desired. Rather than performing domain-based analysis with different search ellipses, the issue was corrected by using Datamine Studio 3?s D.A. function. The 3D vein trend was used to estimate the dip and dip direction of the vein in each block. The resulting D.A.-estimated model follows the two dip trends of the vein. This software makes a previously tedious task faster, and allows for more accurate estimations.

This paper expands on the ZECA (Zero Emission Coal Alliance) technology, which is aimed at making coal a sustainable source of clean energy in the near future. The technology proposed immediate capture of carbon dioxide and other pollutants upon generation, thus alleviating their negative effects in the Earth’s atmosphere. ZECA proposes using chemical energy of coal to produce hydrogen; the latter is then used to produce electricity via fuel cells or Hyrogen-Oxygen turbines. In this study, a chemical engineering package, AspenPlus 12.1, is used to simulate the reactor (reformer) in which hydrogen is produced from methane water and lime as part of the zero emission power plant. Thermodynamic conditions, pressure and temperature, are optimized with respect to molar hydrogen production. Under the proposed conditions, molar conversion efficiency, carbon to hydrogen, of 95% is achieved. Further studies are required to model the complete power plant and to optimize it for efficiency.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. Between 2002 and 2004, the performance of a six million ton per year iron ore beneficiation plant dropped significantly. In a classic case of “who done it,” was it the mine, the concentrator, an ore change, or something else? While average annual final product grade decreased 8% (indicated by an increase in silicate gangue from 2.76% to 2.99%), the weight recovery also decreased by 8% (from 37.92% to 34.79%). This represents a loss of 832,000 tons of iron ore worth about $16 million for the two year period! The concentrator had been optimized to produce a high grade wet concentrate as feed to the dry side of the plant. But, did optimizing an individual unit operation’s grade give the best overall plant performance? In this paper, the investigation and solution to this mystery will be revealed.

Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

The Wild Dog vein gold deposit in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, forms part of a recently discovered 26 km zone of auriferous quartz vein mineralisation. The deposit, which was discovered in July 1983, has no silt anomaly, and a panned concentrate anomaly and float train restricted to within 500 m and 800 m respectively, of the discovery outcrop. Discovery of the Wild Dog deposit was a result of the methodical followup of regional panning which, as followup progressed, was replaced in importance by float sampling. Of the sampling methods used during the exploration leading to discovery, panning and float followup provided immediate indications of the presence of mineralisation. This high degree of spontaneity of followup is not provided by geochemical techniques, and has obvious advantages in high cost exploration for precious metal deposits in remote locations.

ASFINAG is responsible for the construction and operation of the Austrian highway system. It is approx. 2,400 km of highways and 65 tunnels with a total length of 200 km including the Tauern Tunnel. In order to improve the documentation of the tunnel construction, ASFINAG chose to use a state of the art tunnel scanning system to record the various stages of construction: excavation, initial shotcrete lining, smoothing layer and final cast in place concrete lining. The geometric and photogrammetric documentation is provided on a daily basis to all par-ties involved. This innovative concept provides accurate & complete information in real time. The tunnel scanner documentation of the 2nd tube at the 6.4 km long Tauern Tunnel will be presented in this paper as a part of the survey contract.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Global warming is a political reality in the United States today. The actual impact of the continued utilization of fossil fuels is not known and is open to debate. However, the growing concern about the continued use of these fuels is problematic. There are technologies available to us today that would permit America to meet its future energy demand and not contribute to global warming. The inconvenient reality is that fossil fuels cannot completely be replaced with energy conservation and the use of wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and nuclear energy. The connection between the greenhouse effect and global climate change was first identified by physicist John Tyndall in the 1860s. To prove the greenhouse hypothesis, Roger Revelle and his research team started measuring carbon dioxide concentrations in the earth?s atmosphere in the early 1960s (Becker, 2007). With the rising concern about global warming, scientists throughout the world have been obtaining surface and air temperature data. Scientists have also been comparing CO2 concentrations found in glaciers throughout the world with theorized annual temperatures. Data for both dates back 1,000 years. Armed with this data, many nations of the world and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded that climate change is a reality. Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Peru, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, project development occurred against the backdrop of a presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as an unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are discussed in the context of an evolving strategy. The Cerro Corona project forms part of a porphyry copper-gold deposit situated within the Hualgayoc Mining District in northern Peru. It is located in the highest part of the Western Cordillera of the Andes, close to the headwaters of the Atlantic Continental Basin. It lies approximately 90 km (56 miles) by road north of the Department of Cajamarca’s capital city and near the village of Hualgayoc. Access to the Cerro Corona project from Cajamarca is by two roads, one from Cajamarca to the Yanacocha Mine 45 km (28 miles), and then from Yanacocha to the village of Hualgayoc and the town of Bambamarca 45 km (28 miles).

Mining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel, cobalt and uranium have been particularly active. The world?s largest nickel mine ? the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale?s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey?s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $1.4 Billion Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 ? 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

Markets and Production Beryllium (Be), an extremely light metal, is used in many specialty applications. It the lightest element in Group 2A of the periodic table, with a specific gravity of 1.85 gm/cc, and a high melting point of 12850C (Calvert, 2004). The functional properties of beryllium are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion from acids, and electrical and thermal conductivity. The ability to reflect neutrons and transmit x-rays, makes beryllium irreplaceable in uses such as precision optical components, inertial guidance systems, and in nuclear reactors (Anon, 1993). Beryllium is used in Cu alloys to strengthen and reduce corrosion in copper wire, and in lightweight oxide ceramics that are used as heat sinks, and as electrical insulators. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

The San Vicente to 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline?Tunnel project is a raw water conveyance tunnel linking the San Vicente Reservoir (SVR) to the 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline via Rancho Penasquitos Pressure Control Facility (RPPCF). This 58,230 lf long tunnel will be 8.5? final ID, and has four points of construction access. The job is classified into 6 Reaches of tunnel, identified by the dominant geology within the reach. This paper will focus on Reach 3, specifically the measures necessary to drill and blast a 550 lineal foot section of granitic rock tunnel immediately in front of an open face digger shield.

Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."
