The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

HPGR equipment has been well proven to be energy-efficient in the first stage of grinding in iron ore beneficiation plants. Numerous advantages of utilising HPGR grinding prior to ball mill grinding, such as reducing the power consumption in a ball mill through generation of micro-cracks, has been thoroughly studied. Less attention has been paid to efficiency of the HPGR circuit rather than the downstream ball mill circuit. In this study the HPGR circuit has been optimised through feed size reduction by crushing, and feed iron content upgrading by dry cobbing. This optimisation leads to better operation of the HPGR, and a smaller product size which is expected to result in a lower wear rate of ball mill liners and balls. It is also expected that the top size of the ball mill balls be reduced. Additionally, by reducing the feed size of HPGR from 30 mm to 15 mm, it is possible to achieve similar K80 of HPGR product in lowered pressure, i.e. 2.5 N.mm-2 instead of 3.5 N.mm-2 which translates to ease of operation. Similarly in a given roll pressure, smaller feed sizes result in higher specific throughput of ~10% which means higher production capacities. The results also reveal that this optimisation increases the concentrate weight recovery by about 10%. It also results in slight increases in the Fe grade of the product iron concentrate. Modern industrial processes undergo frequent process state shifts due to changes in demand, feedstock or maintenance operations. Multimodal continuous process monitoring is therefore required for effective plant operation. Steady state analysis is a key component in effective multimodal monitoring. Various issues still remain in determining the starting and ending times of transition states. High dimensionality of process data is a characteristic that makes it difficult to select variables to consider when conducting steady state analysis. In order to address these problems, steady state detection on the principal component space is proposed. First, data undergoes principle component analysis to reduce dimensionality, then existing multivariate steady state detection algorithms are applied on the principle component scores. A novel algorithm, threshold PCA-SSD, is proposed and compared to an existing technique for steady state detection. Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. In this paper the authors present a walking robot dedicated to the inspection of a belt conveyor’s transportation system in an underground mine. The developed robot can independently diagnose all of the key rotating elements of the belt conveyor (pulleys, bearings, drums, gears, engines) based on vibration and acoustic signals as well as typical RGB (red, green, blue) and thermal images. The article presents key diagnostic procedures applied to real industrial data obtained during robot testing.The work was developed as part of the ‘THING–subTerranean Haptic INvestiGator’ project. The authors presented the main assumptions of the research methodology developed for the needs of technical diagnostics of conveyor elements typical of inspection work performed by mining staff. Based on industrial data, the use of algorithms for elements such as rollers, drive stations, and the conveyor belt were shown. The main assumption of the research is to develop a robot adapted to the conditions of a deep mine, capable of carrying out an autonomous inspection of mining infrastructure. The conducted tests and the developed fault detection algorithms were aimed at preparing the robot for underground tests in the operating conditions of the mine.

In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. Navigating miners during an evacuation using a smart evacuation technology can significantly decrease the evacuation time of an underground mine in case of an emergency. This paper presents a mathematical programming model to calculate the most efficient escape path for each miner as a critical component of the smart evacuation technology. In this model, the total evacuation distance of the crew is minimised and scenarios with blocked pathways, and stamina categories for the miners are simulated. It was found that all the tested scenarios are technically feasible. Using the feature that filters out blocked pathways has no downsides, as safer routes are calculated, and there is no penalty in the computation time. The paper also discusses the social and technical issues that need to be overcome before the algorithm can be implemented as an actual escape solution.

Over the period 1964 to 1969 Conzinc Riotinto of Australia undertook and completed an evaluation of a large low-grade copper orebody on Bougainville Island in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. From the outset it was clear that the geographic, climatic and topographic characteristics of the area would necessitate a heavy capital outlay on production and support facilities. Both the physical problems and the magnitude of the investment amplified the need for a thorough and rigorous evaluation of the various strategies for exploiting the orebody. In view of the number of independent and inter-related variables and the flow of new data, a computer-based evaluation process extended the scope and depth of the analysis considerably. The system used permitted an iterative assessment and re-assessment of the various strategies with the results becoming increasingly refined with time. This process encompassed the modelling of the orebody, the simulation of alternative operating strategies and the determination of the financial profitability of the project,

The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. The use of remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in mineral exploration is still underutilised. There is a need to explore the potential of new robust remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in the field of mineral exploration. In this study, we mapped the argillic alteration associated with epithermal gold-silver mineralisation. A band ratio of band5/band6 and Crósta technique on Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer within the Google Earth Engine Environment was applied. The bands 5 and 6 were selected for the band ratio after critically analysing and comparing the illite spectral extracted from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer image and the illite spectral obtained from the United States Geological Survey spectral library. The band ratio and Crósta technique identified and mapped the Ovacik goldmine and other argillic alteration zones. Even though both methods mapped out the argillic alteration zones associated with gold-silver mineralisation, the Crósta technique produced the optimal argillic alteration. The study demonstrates the analytical capabilities of Google Earth Engine in image processing and analysis for mineral exploration, such as discovering hydrothermal alteration associated with mineralisation.

The vertical stirring mill’s fine grinding equipment is affected by the operating conditions during the grinding process. The grinding media has a great influence on the energy consumption and particle size distribution. This paper investigates the fine grinding performance of nano-ceramic balls and steel balls of the same weight for magnetite by a wet grinding process in a vertical stirring mill, where 15 mm nano-ceramic balls and 12 mm steel balls are used as grinding media to carry out batch grinding tests. We have observed that the newly qualified particle content of the nano-ceramic balls is higher than steel balls of the same weight at the same specific energy. The reason may be the advantage of a greater surface area and volume filling rate with the nano-ceramic balls. Moreover, the specific energy of nanoceramic balls is less than steel balls of the same weight under the same grinding fineness. In addition, energy efficiency indicates that the nano-ceramic ball has a higher energy efficiency than a steel ball of the same weight. This is due to the light bulk density of nano-ceramic balls. The application of a nanoceramic ball in a vertical stirring mill will improve iron ore grinding performance. "In low-carbon energy-efficient basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking processes, limestone partly or completely replaces the active lime. The effects of limestone calcination temperature (1200–1500°C) and time (5–15 minutes) on lime reactivity and CaO grain size were investigated. The reactivity was evaluated by titration with hydrochloric acid, and the CaO grain size was analysed using scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that for calcination temperatures higher than 1300°C, the reactivity reached a maximum and then decreased . The higher the temperature, the earlier the peak of reactivity appears. The CaO grains grow with increasing temperature and time, which leads to the decrease of reactivity. Notably, the effects of temperature on CaO grain size and reactivity are more marked than that of time. To obtain active lime calcined at ultra-high temperature by flash heating, the calcination conditions should be 1300–1400°C for 10–15 minutes, or 1400–1500°C for 8–10 minutes. IntroductionLime is one of the most important slag-making materials for dephosphorization and desulphurization in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. The reactivity of lime is a measure of its capability to take part in slag-making. Lime having a reactivity of more than 300.0 mL (4 N HCl), determined by hydrochloric acid titration is generally referred to as active lime (Rusjan et al., 2007; Zeman, 2008). At present, the active lime used for BOF processes comes primarily from a kiln or shaft kiln, where limestone is preheated at 700– 900°C, and then calcined at 1050–1200°C (Drenhaus et al., 2010; Oates, 2007)."

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

"Reliable and accurate metal transfer information during silicon tapping from an EAF is invaluable for decision-making and process optimization, while obtaining such information safely is a necessity.Elkem Thamshavn Norway, a producer of metallurgical-grade silicon, identified inherent safety problems with gauging fill levels in ladles using dip bars while molten metal was continuously pouring from a rotating EAF. Operator safety was a paramount concern, and an alternative automatic method of controlling the tapped fill level needed to be found.It was also considered that further benefits could be achieved such as monitoring the tapping flow from the EAF in order to identify any clogging, as well as the potential to use the live feed from such a system to assist decision-making regarding work around the taphole area.Agellis Group AB, Sweden, a company with over 30 years of experience in gauging molten metal levels in the metals industry, was able to design a solution for Elkem Thamshavn that would provide the required real-time process data while enhancing operator safety.This paper shows how the Agellis AB EMLI-L system was successfully installed at Elkem Thamshavn’s EAF continuous tapping area, how ladle fill levels were constantly monitored, and how full ladles were replaced by empty ones without the need for operators to be in the tapping area to take level readings. The results were used to compare the accuracy and reliability of Elkem Thamshavn’s current measuring methods with that of the EMLI-L system. The paper also covers how problems such as how to connect, run, and protect cables in and around the EAF tapping area, as well as connector and cabling survivability during the three day refractory pre-bake period, were solved. Finally, the paper discusses the potential production improvements, maintenance requirements, and data integration attainable through the installation of the system, as well as the major safety improvements that have been achieved."

The rising demand for lithium-ion batteries, coupled with international climate targets, emphasises the need for circular economy and zero-waste recycling approaches. However, so far, no industrial-scaled solutions are available that fulfil global recovery targets. Therefore, a novel pyrometallurgical reactor was developed at the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology at Montanuniversitaet Leoben to avoid lithium slagging and recover volatile elements via the gas phase. Nevertheless, previous results show that several impact factors, including interfering elements or pre-treatment steps, strongly limit the recycling efficiency of black mass. To simulate the black mass and provide feedback on possible influences of pre-treatment steps, cathode material from production with additives of interfering elements was analysed regarding melting behaviour. The results show that formation of a further processable alloy was increased by almost 50% when pretreatment steps were excluded, indicating pre-treatment steps as a major influence to be considered within this specific recycling route.
