South Africa holds approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore resources and dominates the global production of ferrochrome. Albeit completely unintended, small amounts of Cr(VI) are formed during ferrochrome production. Certain Cr(VI)species are regarded as carcinogenic, hence making the treatment of some ferrochrome waste materials necessary. In this paper, the Cr(VI) treatment strategies currently employed by the South African ferrochrome producers are investigated by means of a literature review and a questionnaire survey. From the discussion, it is evident that various treatment strategies are available to deal with Cr(VI)-containing waste in the ferrochrome industry. However, by far the most commonly applied treatment strategy remains the aqueous reduction of Cr(VI) with ferrous iron. The advantages and the correct application of this strategy, together with the disadvantages and pitfalls, are argued. Innovative improvements on historic practices are also discussed

PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Vice-President: "It is my pleasant duty to call on Dr du Toit to deliver his paper, entitled, 'The functional relationship between dust hazard and the rate of collecting funds to pay compensation for pneumoconiosis'." After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. Refractory gold-containing concentrates usually contain gold enclosed in sulphides as well as in rock-forming minerals. Another difficulty is that gold often occurs as very fine inclusions of several micrometres, and even smaller than 1 micrometre, or can be part of the mineral composition at the structure level. Processing of such concentrates is a challenge. Ultrafine grinding and further oxidation are applied for gold liberation. The paper deals with the results from the study of gold deportment using Qemscan, and atmospheric oxidation testwork involving Albion Process™ on a gold-containing concentrate with a high content of refractory gold in sulphides and gangue minerals. Albion process testing was performed at Institute TOMS with the participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Additionally, conventional cyanidation testwork was carried out for the concentrate processing. As an alternative technology of gold liberation, oxidising roasting with arsenic stabilisation was used. The results from the study make it possible to assess the efficiency of the above-mentioned methods of gold liberation, and applicability of Albion technology to recover gold from the refractory concentrate. Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types. In China, thin coal seams are rich in resources but are technically challenging. The mineable reserves in these seams account for 20.4% of the total coal resources, while the current production accounts for only 10.4% of the total annual production. Characteristics such as narrow mining space, low level of mechanization, poor working environment, and high cost of mining, restrict the development of mining safety and efficiency. Recently, fully mechanized mining technology has developed rapidly for thin coal seams, the level of yield and efficiency has reached or exceeded the international standard, and some state-owned key coal mines are considering automation of their mining process. In thin coal seams with hard stone bands that contain concentrations of pyrite, a specialized software, LS-DYNA, is used to calculate the rational blasting parameters that are used in the deep-hole pre-splitting blasting. Using this method the hard stone bands are fractured effectively, and hence increasing the coal productivity. In addition, mining advance rate were increased by enhancing the level of fully mechanized equipment and safety improved by increasing gas drainage from the gas outburst prone seam located some 7 m below the coal horizon. At present, thin coal seam mining technology faces many challenges, including the low level of equipment automation, the low advance rate in mixed coal-rock ground, and the large number of the mine personnel underground. By lowering the labour intensity and improving efficiency through automation and other measures, more efficient working faces can be implemented in thin coal seams.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. Total bound moisture (TBM) is a typical quality indicator of industrial-grade gypsum. This gypsum is comprised of three distinct phases, namely anhydrite, dihydrate, and hemihydrate, of which only the latter is of much industrial use. TBM analysis is a lengthy laboratory procedure, and an artificial neural network (ANN) TBM inference measurement is proposed as a fast and online alternative. An ANN inference model for gypsum TBM based on plant data was developed. The inputs to the network were primarily focused on the plant's calciner, and different network topologies, data divisions, and transfer functions were investigated. Furthermore, the applicability of the TBM value as a quality indicator was investigated based on a gypsum phase analysis. A strong correlation between TBM and the gypsum hemihydrate and anhydrite content was found, validating the plant target TBM of 5.8% as a quality indicator. A network topology consisting of one hidden layer with logarithmic-sigmoid (logsig) and pure linear (purelin) transfer functions showed the best performance (R > 90%).

"SynopsisThe process of joining materials by friction is based on generating the heat necessary to create a solid-state mechanical bond between two faying surfaces to be joined. In simple terms, the components to be joined are subjected to frictional heating between rubbing surfaces, causing an increase in interface temperature and leading to localized softening of interface material, creating what is described as a ’third body’ plasticized layer. This plasticized zone reduces the energy input rate from frictional heating and hence prevents macroscopic melting. The plasticized layer can no longer transmit sufficient stress as it effectively behaves as a lubricant (Boldyrev and Voinov, 1980; Godet, 1984; Singer, 1998; Suery, Blandin, and Dendievel, 1994). The potential for this solid-state frictional joining process to create high-performance joints between, for example, dissimilar materials with limited detrimental metallurgical impact, and reduced defect population and residual stress level, has had a very significant impact on fabrication and repair in industrial sectors such as transport. This paper presents a brief overview of the advances made within the family of friction processing technologies that could potentially be exploited in the nuclear industry as alternative joining and repair techniques to fusion welding.Modern friction processing technologies can be placed into two main categories: those that make use of a consumable tool to achieve the intended repair or joint (friction stud and friction hydro-pillar processing) and those making use of a non-consumable tool (friction stir welding). The most mature friction joining technology is friction rotary welding, where a joint is formed between original parent materials only. A new addition in this category is linear friction welding, which opens the potential for joining complex near-net-shape geometries by friction heating. The continuous innovation in friction processing over the last 25 years has led to the development of a number of unique processes and applications, highlighting the adaptability of friction processes for specialized applications for high-value engineering components.IntroductionAssessing the potential for using alternative joining and repair techniques for specific applications in a given industrial sector is informed by an appreciation of the current size and potential growth in that sector. Power generation by nuclear fission has been out of favour over the past few years, due to several high-profile nuclear incidents, e.g. the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, as well as concerns over disposal of nuclear waste and spent fuel rods. However, due to rapid increases in the demand for electricity, coupled with many fossil-fuel fired plants reaching end-of-life, there is renewed interest in installing additional nuclear capacity."

The location of underground positions in mines has usually fallen to their survey department's. Their usual tasks include: ? installation of a high-precision peg network like the National Survey grid as beacons ? offset measurements to the sidewalls, and sometimes hangingwall and footwalls, of development tunnels and excavations ? offsetting of stoping panels for the calculation of face ? advance and the square meterage of area removed. Other departments build their observations into the plans produced by the surveyors. If more precision is required, they ask the surveyors to `elevate' their points with a theodolite. Apart from the survey peg network and `elevations' these measurements are usually planer measurements suitable for producing plans, sections and projection sheets. When the only representation medium was a sheet of paper or transparency, this was perfectly suitable. However the development of CAD models of the workings has changed all this. Full 3D representation is not properly catered for in the tool sets in current use, and needless hours are spent converting analogue-type observations into digital form. The basic survey models need to be augmented by the observations of other disciplines that are also required to locate positions underground. These include: ? the need for geologists to plott their mapping and ? borehole logs into 3D space ? the need for samplers to position their sample points accurately because the geostatistical models are biased and inaccurate ? the need for stoping width recorders to position their thickness observations to prevent errant evaluation and bonuses ? the need for rock engineers to place their mappings into 3D to build true geotechnical models to manage geotechnical stresses ? the need for production officials to receive updated face ? positions during the month so that they can manage the ? production and utilize their resources properly. This paper covers a new method of positioning profiling points to a suitable degree of accuracy. I believe the method is sufficiently simple and cheap for all to use. Historical methods Platinum and gold orebodies, especially in South Africa, are generally narrow tabular deposits. This made them suitable for depicting on a 2D medium like paper. The determination of stoping or face widths was not a problem, as the ore is removed in a single stoping process. Such 2D representations could be easily positioned using tape offsetting between survey pegs or points tied in from survey pegs. Problems of dip were handled by using 'Stope Sheets' which chose a best fit projection for the whole area depicted or by using true dip section sheets for inclined tunnels. Rolling reef and potholes were the common areas of difficulty. Most mines now model their orebody and plan the extraction in computer graphics. This means that the representation of the current workings has to change to support this trend. It now becomes a truly 3D problem. Mining officials find it inconvenient to have their actual workings in single-line depictions while their orebody is depicted with top and bottom contacts and the planned tunnels in 3D shapes. Geological models which form the basis for the resource model and planning process are often out of date, as the updating process is slow. The geological mapping has to be plotted onto sections and plans. These are then digitized into graphics by a draughtsman and checked by the geologist. Only then does the interpretation and model update take place. Potential methods to create 3D 'Actuals' Global positioning systems (GPS) Surface mines have been blessed by the advent of GPS technology. These simple-to-operate pieces of equipment and compatible software make it possible for all types of mine employees to locate themselves, and therefore to locate their observations. GPS are often inexpensive and give an acceptable degree of accuracy. Only in deep pits or close to the highwalls are observations hindered. Such technology cannot however, work underground. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) GPR is reported to be very useful for estimating the positions of potholes and faults. However it is still considered as providing an estimate, not a definite measurement. GPR is good for seeing into solid rock, not into open spaces. Inertia reading devices Experiments with inertia reading devices have been conducted on the mines. They were the forerunners of GPS for military guidance systems, and were even used for city navigation in the early 70s. They do however work best with heavy or fast-spinning gyros. Anglogold Ashanti's attempt to use them were discontinued in the mid-90s when the developers asked for an additional few million rand for a device that would weigh more than 12 kg and have a limited operational life.

VAN GRAAN, M.Sc (Pretoria) (Visitor) Microclimate suits have been shown to be very effective in decreasing physiological strain in hot, wet environments, thus enabling men to work without risk in areas that would normally carry a high risk of heat stroke. In this paper, some design considerations in the development of the frozen jacket are described. Water complied with most of the desirable properties required of a coolant material for use In a microclimate suit. The Human Sciences Laboratory has developed a jacket in which ice is used as the coolant and which is designed according to the most acceptable anthropometrical characteristics. The jacket consists of an inner poncho-type waistcoat containing 28 water compartments. Over this is worn an insulating jacket, which minimizes warming of the coolant by the environment. Suitable refrigeration units have been developed to freeze the jackets underground. Laboratory tests have shown that these jackets are effective for about 2,5 hours, Irrespective of the wet-bulb environment, when men are working at a moderate rate. Jackets should, however, be used only in environments in which the wet-bulb temperature is in the range of 32,S0 to 35,S °C.

"Conventional blasting rules of thumb used to develop blast designs are based on parametric ratios, with insufficient consideration of the rock mass factors that influence the achievability of final wall designs. At a hard-rock mine in Botswana, catchment berm designs were frequently unachievable, which exposed the mining operation to safety hazards such as local wallrock failure from damaged crests, frozen toes, and rolling rockfalls from higher mining levels. Increased standoff distances from the highwall reduced the manoeuvring area on the pit floor and the extraction factor that was safely achievable. Application of rock mass classification and the Blastability Index (BI) as a means to improve wall control was investigated. Zones were defined according to rock types forming the western highwall rock mass, and distinguishing rock mass classification factors were used to establish the suitable wall control designs. The approach combined rock mass classification methodologies such as the Geological Strength Index and the Rock Mass Rating, and related them to the BI and discontinuities of the rock mass to produce a design input tool that can be used to develop objective wall control designs. The designs driven by the tool inherently take into account the rock mass characteristic factors at the centre of the rock mass classification methods mentioned above, and significantly reduce the dependence on rules of thumb. It was found that this approach produces designs with explosive energy measures that are consistent with the required rock-breaking effort and the behaviour of discontinuities, while preserving perimeter walls.IntroductionBlasting is the first step in the comminution process. Various coordinated inputs contribute to its success, and in turn to the efficient execution of processes that lie downstream from the blasting step. Primary to meeting production and operational objectives of a mine, as well as the protection of human life and the mineral resource, is the achievement of highwall design specifications and competence. To this end, this study investigated the use of existing tools and knowledge for the achievement of highwall control goals at a hard-rock mine in Botswana."

The density used to covert volume to tons is critical in determining the real in-situ tonnage of Mineral Resources. However, the methods used to determine density and the use of different technical terms are seen to be inconsistent throughout the industry. Probably the best discussion addressing the determination of density was presented by Lipton (2001). This paper does not try to replicate this excellent work, but rather to review current industry practice and present a comparison of the approach to density in public reporting. Some of the technical terms used in reporting and the common methods applied are also discussed.

This paper describes experimental investigations into the reductive decomposition of arsenopyrite/pyrite (FeAsS/FeS2), a gold and silver bearing iron/arsenic sulphide using metallic iron powder. The main objective was to establish and experimentally confirm the thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility of reductively decomposing the sulphide matrix for precious metals recovery. In this context, cyanidation leach tests were conducted on the reductive leach residues. The arsenopyrite/pyrite flotation concentrate, mainly studied in the hydrochloric acid medium, decomposed through the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction and the reductive decomposition reaction for the arsenopyrite and pyrite components, respectively. Desulphurization levels below 65% were achieved at pH values below 0.15 and iron to concentrate ratios above 1, and the system was characterized by overall very slow kinetics. The reaction system had a direct linear relationship with iron to concentrate ratio and an inverse relationship with pH. An analysis of the pyrite/iron galvanic system showed that pyrite forms a partially inert cathodic surface on which the anodic dissolution of iron occurs, supported by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This phenomenon explained the low desulphurization levels and the mineral decomposition seemed to be restricted to the non?oxidative chemical dissolution reaction for the arsenopyrite component. The cyanide leach of the reductive leach residues showed very little improvement in gold recovery. The reductive leach process for arsenopyrite/pyrite has considerable limitations in terms of both desulphurization and precious metals liberation. "Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

Pyrometallurgical smelters utilise tap-holes, through which liquid metal, matte and/or slag are tapped at regular intervals. However, tap-hole failures can have a devastating impact on smelters, which includes loss of equipment, human life and business interruptions. Contributing factors to tap-hole failures include poor and/or incorrect refractory material selection, including tap-hole clays. The functions of tap-hole clays in smelters include their ability to be extruded and drilled with ease at the end and beginning of a tap, and their ability to resist chemical wear due to molten metal and slag during tapping. Mintek is currently developing methods of evaluating properties of tap-hole clays with a specific focus on workability, and wear mechanisms of clays due to ferrochrome alloy and slag. Of particular interest to this study was the characterisation of various tap-hole clays. This paper evaluates the chemical and phase chemical properties of three different tap-hole clays. The bulk chemical composition of the tap-hole clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, proximate analyses and combustion methods. The bulk phase compositions and specific phase chemical compositions were studied using quantitative X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyses techniques. A recent experimental pillar extraction project at a UG2 bord-and-pillar mine presented a unique opportunity to compile a new pillar database. Currently, the South African hard rock bordand- pillar mines are designed using the Hedley and Grant formula with a modified K-value. This empirically derived formula was developed for uranium mines in the Elliot Lake district of Canada. The use of this formula for the design of pillars in South Africa is questionable. Very few pillar failures have nevertheless been observed and its current calibrations for the various reef types are possibly too conservative. A new UG2 pillar database of 66 pillars, of which seven are classified as failed, was compiled by the authors. This enabled a revised ‘first-order’ calibration of the K-value for the Hedley and Grant formula. The new estimated value for the UG2 is K = 75 MPa. This gives a pillar strength that is more conservative than the PlatMine formula. This work should nevertheless be considered as only a preliminary calibration as the database was small. Further work is also required to determine whether the exponents in the formula for the width and height parameters are appropriate for UG2 pillars.

In order to add value to South Africa?s gold reserves AuTEK, a joint venture between Mintek and Anglogold-Ashanti, was started in 2000 with the aim of developing new industrial uses for gold. Accordingly gold catalysts are being made in kilogram quantities by Project AuTEK and sold toend users and other interested parties under the trade name AUROliteTM. Although these materials are optimized for use in CO oxidation applications, demonstration of appropriate activity, selectivity and durability in both liquid- and other gas-phase reactions has been shown1. The review below highlights the recent use of these materials, and other gold catalysts, in reactions of commercial interest.
