A furnace freeze lining is necessary for safety and economic reasons in several smelting operations. The integrity of the freeze lining is put at risk by furnace power imbalances. Although numerous models have been derived to model the growth and depletion of the freeze lining due to power imbalances, no model exists for thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining. This study provides an initial pathway for modelling thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining in an ilmenite smelting furnace using information from the literature and experimental work. A methodology under the framework of continuum damage mechanics is proposed to model mechanical damage to the freeze lining due to phase changes, thermophysical changes, and constrained thermal expansion. Drill cores of solidified slag ingots were used to represent the freeze lining. The modified power law proved to be the best predictor of the softening response of the drill cores. Damage driving parameters were extracted from the raw data, and governing equations of the parameters with respect to temperature were derived for use in a finite element method (FEM) code.

The Conference Minerals & Materials '96 was held in Somerset West, South Africa, from 31st July to 2nd August, 1996. It was organized by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, the Cape Technikon, and the Western Cape Branch of The South African institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The three-day Conference was attended by 180 delegates, representing countries such as Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The programme and associated exhibition were well organized, and each of the delegates received two volumes of proceedings containing the 77 papers presented at the Conference.

This paper is based on the Townlands Ore Replacement Project whereby the concept of conventional sinking of one large diameter shaft was declined and replaced with three smaller raise bored shafts. A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. IntroductionDrilling and blasting contribute most to the operational cost in opencast mining and have the potential to influence the cost of downstream operations (Aipanda, 2011). The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Although, many attempts have been made to correlate drillability with rock properties, the rock characteristics affecting rotary drilling have not been entirely defined (Hartman, 1962; Kahraman, Bilgin, and Feridunoglu, 2003). Monitoring open-pit mine road conditions has become very critical nowadays. There are several benefits to in conducting research on this field such as opportunity to improve truck’s speed which directly influences truck’s productivity. This research aims to provide a semi real-time, and sensors-based automatic road damage detector that predicts the road quality through road damage exact location tracing, road damages auto-classification, and real-time instruction in the form of work order format to mining road maintenance, and repair authorities through mobile apps and maintenance unit’s in-cabin display. It will also provide the maintenance/repair activity performance evaluation via integrated dashboards. The artificial neural network algorithm is applied during the process of data training regarding classifying road damages and severities which resulted in a valid model. The road damage classification model has a precision level of 80.5% in predicting whether the road is damaged or not. Using this approach, we are expecting to visualise a road quality map of all active roads on mine site.

"The complexity of the mining and metallurgical operations of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, has made it necessary to use computer-assisted planning techniques in order to maximize copper production and marginal contribution to profit. The most successful of the Group Production Scheduling systems utilized linear programming to optimize the concentrate routing only. This third-generation system was commissioned in March, 1968.It bad become necessary by March, 1970, to expand the long-term planning activities and to take into account new mines and new concentrate treatment schemes. Technical difficulties and manpower limitations made it impossible to expand the third-generation system, and it was decided to construct a new Group Production Scheduling system using only linear programming.The plant models in the new fourth-generation system are based on data available from the monthly reports of the metallurgical plants. The models consist of mass balances and empirical relationships. Matrix coefficient assignment and management reports are produced using a Report Generator Language designed for linear programming data files. The development of this system is an example of a user application of a system package."

The platinum group metals (PGMs) palladium, platinum, and rhodium represent the key materials for automotive exhaust gas treatment. Since there are currently no adequate alternatives, the importance of these metals for the automotive industry is steadily rising. The high value of PGMs in spent catalysts justifies their recycling. The state-of the-art technology is to melt the ceramic carrier and collect the precious fraction in a liquid metal bath. As the feed material has quite high melting points, huge amounts of energy are required for this process. Hydrometallurgical treatments of the spent catalysts offer the possibility to recycle the PGMs with less energy and time demands. Moreover, automotive catalysts contain further valuable materials to improve the exhaust gas treatment. These compounds, like cerium oxide, cannot be recovered in pyrometallurgical processes. This paper deals with a special process that uses hydrometallurgical principles to recycle the valuable metal fraction from spent automotive catalytic converters. Hydrochloric acid in combination with hydrogen peroxide is used as leaching agent. This combination selectively dissolves the PGMs and the cerium, which can be recovered in separate steps. As the leaching solution is regenerated and reused, wastewater generation is minimized. Furthermore, the process residues constitute potential byproducts.

South Africa has two main platinum reef deposits, namely the Merensky reef and the UG2 reef. These reefs are currently mined using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Mechanized cutting could potentially enable continuous mining, which would offer significant advantages. This would require thorough understanding of the cutability of the rock. To explore this, a linear cutting machine was developed to conduct laboratory scale cutting tests. This work describes the development and commissioning of the cutting machine using sandstone, as well as subsequent characterization tests on UG2 reef samples. UG2 reef has large variability in strength on a millimeter scale. This introduces uncertainty in the test results due to added variance from one cut to the next for the same UG2 reef sample. Another problem is the variability in rock properties of the UG2 reef, when testing samples from different mines. The cutting tests led to fine fragmentation, which is known to be a significant problem for cleaning operations in underground stopes and warrants further research. A finite element method simulation of the rock cutting was conducted using ANSYS LS-DYNA and the continuous surface cap model to simulate rock cutting in the UG2 reef. It was found that it is possible to use LS-DYNA with the continuous surface cap model to model rock cutting of UG2 reef and get acceptable results, but the user must calibrate the model parameters using the experimental results. Therefore, the model is only fit for one set of cutting parameters and further work is required to generalize results.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. INTRODUCTION The first references in the literature to the so-called C.S.I.R. 'doorstopper' strain cell were made in 1964 1,2,3,4. These were the climax of nearly two years of experimental and developmental work with the instruments and the operating techniques involved. Since that time numerous field measurements have been made with 'doorstoppers' and they have been developed to a stage where they are in commercial production and are being supplied to users throughout the world. No detailed description of the latest 'doorstopper' equipment has, however, appeared in print and this paper is written to bring the literature up to date in this respect. The triaxial strain cell was developed three years ago 5, 6, 7 and was first described at the First Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics in Lisbon in 1966 8. Since that date laboratory tests and-particularly important-field tests 7' 9 have demonstrated the validity and practicality of the instruments and techniques. These instruments have also been developed to a stage where they have been released for commercial production. In this form they are very different from those described two years ago and a full description of them at this stage seems to be justified. THE INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY 'DOORSTOPPER' AND TRIAXIAL STRAIN CELLS Both the 'doorstopper' and triaxial strain cells were designed specifically to determine the absolute stress in rock using an overcoring stress relieving technique. They were not designed to measure changes in stress. They may, however, be used for the latter purpose provided the glue which is used to stick the strain gauges to the rock is known to possess sufficiently stable strain-time characteristics as not to affect the accuracy of the results during the time the measurements are made. The 'doorstopper' was designed primarily to measure the major principal stress in situations where its direction and those of the two other principal stresses were either known or could be assumed. For example, at great depth in undisturbed virgin ground, it is reasonable to assume that the maximum principal stress is vertical and that the other two lie in a horizontal plane. The borehole in which the 'doorstopper' is installed would thus be drilled in the horizontal plane parallel to one of the minor principal stresses, the direction of which would either have to be assumed or determined as described later. The stresses measured would be the vertical major principal stress and the principal stress acting in a horizontal plane normal to the borehole axis. It is possible, as will be shown later, to obtained the complete state of stress using 'doorstoppers'. In this event, it is necessary to make measurements in three boreholes drilled in any three known directions to each other and relative to a system of three orthogonal axes. The triaxial strain cell was designed to determine the complete state of stress in a single borehole drilled in any direction in any stress field. "Mineral Resource estimation (MRE) and classification are highly dependent on the confidence in the model of the orebody geometry, known as the geological model, within which the estimates are constrained. An understanding of the geology of a deposit is thus fundamental to the Mineral Resource evaluation process. The geological model is a function of the structural and depositional complexity of the geology captured by drilling information, which is limited in the early stages of a project. The information effect has a significant impact in terms of the interpretation of the geology as well as the estimation of grade continuity and the resultant risk associated with the Mineral Resource estimate and classification.Therefore, as new drilling information becomes available, it is necessary to update and refine the geological model to appropriately constrain the resource estimates. The grade information is also updated, including statistics and the spatial correlation characteristics. This refinement is based on geological interpretations derived from the drillhole information that becomes available throughout the life of the mine; orebody knowledge that comes from working experience of the deposit, as well as familiarity with the software package used for modelling, is also important.In updating, the potential to identify new resources in previously unknown areas may be realized. The opposite may also occur where previous interpretations of ore continuity are refuted. Both scenarios could result from a better understanding of the geology of the deposit and thus a more realistic MRE, which reduces geological risk. This paper describes how newly drilled advanced grade-control holes for a gold deposit in Mali were used to refine the 3D geological model for the deposit in an attempt to identify the potential for additional oxide ore using conventional geostatistical evaluation techniques."

Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication

"As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.
