Modelling stockpiles is a key factor of a project’s economics and operation in mining, because not all the mined ores are not able to mill for many reasons. Furthermore, the financial value of the ore in the stockpile needs to be reflected on the balance sheet. Therefore, automatically tracking the boundaries of the stockpile facilitates the mine scheduling engineers to calculate the tonnage of the ore remaining in the stockpile. This paper suggests how the dynamic of stockpile shape changes caused by dumping and reclaiming operations can be inferred using polygon models. The paper also demonstrates how the geometry of stockpiles can be inferred in the absence of reclaimed bucket information, in which case the reclaim polygons are established using the digger’s global positioning system (GPS) positional data at the time of truck loading. This work further compares two polygon models for creating 2D shapes.

The Koidu Kimberlite Project is situated in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, approximately 330 km east of the capital city, Freetown. The mining lease area is 4 km2 and comprises 2 kimberlite pipes, 4 dyke zones and a number of blows off the dykes. Koidu Holdings established on the property and began dewatering and the removal of silt from the existing 30 m excavation of the No.1 Pipe in 2003. While the original planning for the pipes included conventional open pit operations, mitigating factors such as the proximity of the town, the presence of houses close to the perimeter of the pipe, the size of the pipe and the planned open pit depth with relevant stripping ratios, as well as uncertainties on the grades in respect of an underground operation, lent itself to the vertical pit concept. The vertical pit was established using an A-frame headgear for the hoisting arrangement, with sidewall support comprising a combination of 20 m and 40 m long cable anchors, rock bolts, wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete. The pit reached steady state production in January 2007 and produced some 26,000 tonnes of head feed per month until August 2007 when mining reached a depth of 74 m below the pit collar (approximately 126 m below surface). Mining was suspended following a sidewall failure that disrupted operations. Now that the grades in No.1 Pipe have been validated, focus has been switched to an underground operation taking account of both No. 1 Pipe and No. 2 Pipe. While the mining costs for the vertical pit have been higher than for a conventional open pit, the concept did circumvent the social implications, the issue of grade consistency and diamond value at depth, as well as providing the time frame to carry out a full underground mining study.

Spontaneous combustion (SC) is a cold oxidation reaction that generates heat, causing a temperature rise of the reactant and leading, with limited heat dissipation, to self-ignition of the reactant, which occurs without an external heat source. Although not limited to coal, the most significant hazard of SC are the fires that occur in coal mining operations around the world. These fires pose a serious risk to the safety of workers in the mines as well as adverse effects on the environment, and can affect the quality of life for current and future generations. We investigated the occurrence of SC in raw coal storage bunkers with the purpose of compiling a decision analyser for engineers designing or working with coal storage bunkers. Specific experts were interviewed from different backgrounds and companies, followed by field research at a coal mine. The important factors affecting the possibility of SC occurring were the type of coal supplied to the bunker, the mining practice, and physical conditions around the bunker. The information presented here will assist in reducing the SC risk in raw coal storage bunkers. These findings, together with the systematic decision analyser developed, will assist design engineers and mine personnel to take early preventative steps in managing SC. The decision analyser was tested for many different scenarios and gave good guidance on how to minimize and prevent SC in bunkers

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

The risks associated with operating water reservoirs and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are different because of their different purposes, methods of construction and operation, and characteristics of the materials impounded and their flow behaviour. Regardless of the differences, these two types of structures are often put in the same category when it comes to risk assessment and the application of relevant methodologies, which may result in unrealistic outcomes. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to apply the risk ranking methodology designed for water reservoirs to TDFs and overview the key differences between these two types of structures. We also provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained by conducting a risk assessment of the operation of a TSF, applying the method recommended by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and analyse the results using the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique. It is concluded that a more realistic evaluation of risk levels can be obtained by adopting a systematic approach to risk assessment in accordance with the traditional risk definition on which the FMEA technique is based.

A solar reflector soiling study was carried out at a ferromanganese smelter in South Africa to assess the soiling rates at different locations around the plant. Several meteorological parameters were monitored to give insight into the conditions that lead to increased soiling. Mineralogical characterization of dust samples collected from the reflectors and the atmosphere revealed that only a certain size fraction is of importance with regard to soiling, and that the dust can be attributed to both raw materials and smelter products. Proximity to the dust source was the primary driver for increased soiling. The site that experienced the most soiling was very close to raw material heaps; this was deemed an outlier and was excluded from the summary statistics. The secondary driver for increased soiling was location relative to the smelter dust sources and the wind’s direction and speed. The reflector set at the best location experienced 13.1% less soiling than the set at the ‘worst’ (but still feasible) location, represented by an averaged mean daily reflectance loss of 0.0186. The study revealed that while there are periods of intense soiling at this particular site, proper planning of reflector location in relation to the smelter dust sources can significantly mitigate the soiling rate.

"This paper aims to demonstrate how a systemic approach can be applied to the analysis of the causes of accidents in South African mines. The accident analysis framework used was developed previously by the authors from the combination of the Mark III version of the Swiss Cheese model, Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM), the Nertney Wheel model, and safety management principles. Data on 91 accidents occurring from 2010 to 2012 at the site of a platinum mine in South Africa were used to populate the newly developed framework. The results obtained show that while routine violations (45% of all accidents analysed) were the most common form of human error, problems in the physical environment of workers were the most common workplace factor (39.6% of all accidents analysed). Furthermore, inadequate leadership was found to be the most common systemic factor responsible for accidents (51.6% of all accidents analysed). Some workplace factors were more commonly associated with particular unsafe acts than others, and some systemic factors were more associated with particular workplace factors than others. The outcome of this study demonstrates that systemic factors, rather than human errors and violations, are the chief causes of accidents in the mining sector. IntroductionThe mining industry is a very important sector of the South African national economy. A major factor threatening the sustainability of this industry is mining accidents, which frequently result in injuries or deaths, destruction of property, and pollution of the environment. In the past, mining accidents have led to the shutdown and threat of shutdown of mines (Ryan, 2008; Mail and Guardian, 2011). The country stands the risk of incurring significant losses if the mining industry continues to experience shutdowns. In 2012, the mining sector accounted for R262.7 billion (equivalent to US$32.83 billion) representing 8.3% of GDP directly, on a nominal basis (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2013).Mining safety is a global concern and has attracted significant international attention. This has precipitated various studies into different aspects of mining. Unfortunately, human error has been blamed for the majority of these accidents. A study by the US Bureau of Mines found that human error is the cause of almost 85% of all accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). In Australia, it is the cause of two out of every three occupational accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). Various mining companies maintain that they run efficient systems, and hence the behavioural problems of workers are to blame for most accidents. An understanding of accident causality could be a major step in the quest to reduce accidents. Only with a good understanding of the accident process can effective remedies can be designed."

"Previously, we upgraded and implemented two gamma activation assay (GAA) systems designed to analyse the gold content in raw ores at Zarafshan laboratory, Uzbekistan, and achieved a detection limit of less than 0.05 g/t under actual industrial conditions. Having started to design a fully modern, industrial GAA system for mining companies, this paper analyses the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of all major system components that can influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. The results of a study to optimize the detector geometry and sample size are presented and the performances of the linear electron accelerator, detector array, and sample transportation system of a modern, industrial GAA system for analysing gold, silver, and rare earth elements are considered. IntroductionGamma activation analysis (GAA) has considerable potential as a future replacement for traditional fire assay analysis in gold mining (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017). The essence of GAA is to irradiate ore samples with high-energy gamma quanta generated by an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) and then to use a gamma spectrometer to detect the induced activity of the excited gold nuclei. The advantages of this method are discussed in detail elsewhere (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017), where it is shown that GAA is uniquely suited to analysing ore samples when mining for gold, other precious metals, and accompanying elements.These advantages were realized in three industrial GAA laboratories that were commissioned in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan in 1977, in Magadan, Russia in 1979, and in Batagay, Russia in 1986 (Bourmistenko, 1986; Nii Tekhnicheskoy Fiziki I Avtomatiki, n.d). In 1989, a fourth industrial GAA laboratory was commissioned at a gold mine in Tommot, Russia. However, the project was subsequently halted due to economic reasons (Moshkov and Tjamisov, 2017). Currently, only the laboratory of the Muruntau mine in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan is in operation. The gamma activation method for gold determination is widely applicable at this mine owing to its high productivity and low cost of analysis. An outstanding aspect is the performance of more than one million analyses per year."

The Proceedings of the above Symposium have been edited and published by the Symposium Committee. The Symposium was sponsored by the Australian Coal Association, the Joint Coal Board, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The Symposium was very well attended, with presentations from fourteen countries, including all the major coal-producing countries of the world. The Proceedings are presented in two parts: the Symposium Part and the Workshop Part. The Symposium Part deals basically with the theoretical aspects of outbursts and high-gas emissions in mines, while the Workshop Part is more practically oriented and describes case studies, and the management systems, and drilling technologies used in underground mines.

Rare earth elements (REE) are present at concentrations of approximately 0.36 % in phosphogypsum stacks located in Phalaborwa, South Africa. The REE are present in the phosphogypsum in solid solution in the gypsum and as fluorine and aluminium rich precipitates. Recovery of the REE offers opportunities for valorization and reducing the environmental impact of the phosphogypsum waste. This paper presents the results of investigations into the leaching behaviour of rare earth elements and other impurities from phosphogypsum using aqueous sulfuric acid. The effects of acid concentration, temperature, residence time, and the influence of impurities were evaluated for their impact on the solubility of rare earth elements in a sulfate medium. It was found that a significant fraction of the REE can be leached from the phosphogypsum in a range of conditions much less severe than traditional hard rock rare earth processing conditions. The REE were leached at a sulfuric acid concentration of 110 g/l, temperature of 30°C – 40°C and a residence time of approximately 8 hours.

The grinding circuit can be one of the most important mineral processing circuits in plants. Along with the application of large-scale milling machines, the design and optimisation of the operation strategy for grinding circuits is more complicated. An in-house grinding process simulation tool was developed to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. An industrial grinding and classification circuit in a copper mine was modelled, and the modelling parameters were verified by a particular group of plant survey data. To justify the prediction ability of the fitted models, the model predictions under different operation conditions were compared with another group of plant survey data. Then the model predicted the effects on the circuit of changing operating conditions. Circuit analysis of the comminution process for water feed to a SAG mill, water feed to sump, the rolling speed of a SAG mill and the percentage of ball filling in a SAG mill was put into practise, based on the simulation results. The simulation results can be used to help plant operators understand the features of the comminution process and may help to build a knowledge library for process control. A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling industrial waste. The methodology is based on the break-even control mechanism, but at the same time provides for the introduction of new evaluation criteria such as the threshold of conditionality and the degree of ore substitution. Based on an improved analysis, it becomes possible to more precisely predict recycling efficiency. A more refined determination of the lower limit of concentration of recoverable metals, at which technogenic waste can be assigned the status of secondary raw materials and processed profitably, leads to a significant expansion of the secondary raw material base suitable for recycling. The potential for recycling manganese-containing dust from the production of ferrosilicomanganese, dehydrated sludge from the hydro separation of slags, and cake from the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide at the Chiatura mining enterprise is used as an example. It is shown that with a threshold of –24% Mn content, the highest recycling efficiency can be achieved by the production of low-phosphorus manganese slag and conversion to ferrosilicomanganese using the above waste to replace 40-60% grade III and IV manganese concentrates in the feed.

The surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar were investigated by XPS, zeta potential measurements and first principle calculation. The results indicated that the zeta potential of feldspar was more negative than that of spodumene. The most possible active sites on spodumene and feldspar were Al sites and O sites. However, the number, type and activity of these sites were different. The flotation behaviour of five new collectors (cationic collector decyloxy-propyl-amine (DPA), anionic collector α-bromododecanoic acid (α-BDDA), N-Dodecyliminodiacetic acid (DIDA), and mixed collector DPA-BDDA and DPA-DIDA) were investigated through micro flotation experiments and analysed based on the surface chemistry features of spodumene and feldspar. The results revealed that cationic collector DPA processed a high collecting capacity for both minerals. The highest recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 91.60% and 95.30% respectively. The anionic collector α-BDDA and DIDA showed poor flotation behaviour. The recovery of spodumene and feldspar when using α-BDDA as collector was less than 5% and when using DIDA as collector was less than 1%. For the mixed collector DPA-BDDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 82.27% and 32.61% respectively at pH 4.5. For mixed collector DPA-DIDA, the recovery of spodumene and feldspar was 35.69% and 9.08% respectively at pH 5.8. The results indicated that the cationic collector had high collecting capacity, but low selectivity. The collecting capacity of anionic collector for spodumene and feldspar was poor at the same concentration compared with cationic collectors. Mixed collector DPA-BDDA showed good flotation behaviour and selectivity on spodumene. The ―COO- in mixed collector might improve the selectivity. However, too much ―COO- would increase the electrostatic repulsion, which might cause low selectively and poor recovery. Uncertainty with regard to estimated grades and tonnages of a mineral deposit demands risk assessment in order to build investor confidence and attract the interest of other stakeholders in the success of a project. Uncertainties associated with Mineral Resource estimates can lead to unreliable production schedules and unpredictable cash flows. However, the techniques used in the mining industry to determine these uncertainties are inconsistent, because the important decisions taken in the process are solely dependent on the responsible Competent Person (CP), without limitations. This leads to disparities between different CPs’ results, using data-sets from the same drill-holes. The various standard codes for public disclosure provide guidelines and recommendations for the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves but do not provide details on, for example, the amount of geological and geostatistical information needed to qualify for each category of Resources and Reserves. The parameters used to generate the classification categories are subjectively assumed by the responsible CP. In this paper we investigate the impacts of different CPs’ judgements on resource classification, using the same data-sets. The results underpin the need for the mining industry to develop a uniform Mineral Resources and Reserves classification framework that can minimize or avoid significant discrepancies that lead to potential misleading public disclosures.
