"INTRODUCTION Information relative to the ignition temperatures of acetylene and acetylene-air mixtures has become of particular interest recently due to a number of explosions that have occurred in 500-pound, double-rated, medium-pressure acetylene generators in shipyards on the West coast. Various suggestions have been made as to the causes of these explosions prominent among which has been that air finds its way into the acetylene generators during abnormal operation or that air remains in the carbide hopper of the generator following the purging and charging operations.This raises the question as to how and to what extent the presence of small percentages of air in acetylene affects the ease of ignition of such mixtures at the various operating pressures of the acetylene generators. The range of operating pressures in the 500-pound, double-rated generators involved in the explosions may vary from below atmospheric to 15 pounds gage.The present report gives the results of an investigation made to determine the effects of pressure on the ignition temperature of pure acetylene and of acetylene containing varying percentages of air:EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus A preliminary investigation showed that a heated quartz surface gave lower ignition temperatures than other material tested.A ""hot-spot"" method of ignition was found desirable in the case of the acetylene mixtures since the violence of the explosions was reduced by keeping most of the test mixtures at room temperature. Explosive violence was reduced further by using an ignition tube 17 mm. or less in diameter."

The control of coal dust on coal tipples and cleaning plants has not been given the consideration that is afforded underground dust hazards. This apparent oversight is undoubtedly due to the general opinion that coal-dust accumulation in tipples or cleaning plants does not present the same type of hazard that it does underground. That this opinion is at least in part a fallacy has been proved many times, and the Bureau of Mines has on record many examples of explosions in tipples and cleaning plants.3/ In addition to this explosion hazard, coal dust is considered by sonic authorities to be injurious to the health of individuals exposed to it.4/ Obviously, it reduces visibility and contributes materially to accident hazards and the discomfort of the employees. Several companies have recognized this dust hazard and the advantages derived from controlling it; consequently, they have installed equipment to allay and control the dust on, their cleaning plants and tipples. The object of this paper is to. Summarize briefly some of the methods new in effect.

This investigation was a part of the Bureau of Mines program for the production of critical and essential materials needed for the war. The Boykin Committee for investigating the steel shortage aided in obtaining an appropriation to be expended by the Bureau of Mines in studying the utilization of North Dakota lignite in the manufacture of hydrogen that could be used in the production of sponge iron from the low-grade iron ores of Minnesota. This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the workability of the proposed shaft-furnace process and its possible use in connection with an experimental plant for the gasification of lignite operated by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

It is a common misconception that all yellow stones are topazes and that all topazes are yellow; but neither statement is true. The real topaz is a rather rare mineral, and a large number of yellow stones that masquerade as topaz are nothing more than yellow quartz, known as citrine, but almost universally called topaz. The true topaz is often called "Brazilian" topaz by the jeweler to distinguish it from yellow quartz; nevertheless, both terms are freely applied in trade to other yellow stones. Topaz is considered the most popular yellow stone for jewelry and is often used as the principal stone in brooches or pendants, especially in old-fashioned ornaments. However, many other species yield pretty yellow stones, some of which are far more numerous and less costly than the topaz.

The four major IR bands of a-quartz at 1080, 797, 693 and 488 cm-1 are studied at room temperature by FTIR-Photoacoustic Spectroscopy. Using Rosencwaig-Gersho theory, equations for the PAS signal q for the thermally thin and thermally thick cases are derived and it is shown how thin to thick transition occurs and leads to saturation as the sample mass is increased. For sample mass < 2 mg, q is proportional to sample mass thus defining the region for quantitative analysis. The dependence of q on the chopping frequency f is found to vary as q f-n with n ? 0.9 for quartz, in good agreement with the RG theory.

In the repetitive electrowinning of tungsten from scheelite, the calcium impurity buildup in the molten electrolyte results in decreased metal purity, metal recovery, and current efficiency. Periodic addition of B2O3, which reacts with the lime liberated from the scheelite, more than tripled the life of the electrolyte in winning 99.9-percent-pure tungsten and also reduced the number of units of electrolyte required per unit of tungsten recovered from six to four.

Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

The oxygen bomb-is used extensively for determining sulphur in petroleum, although it has been suspected that the results obtained with this method are somewhat lower than the true varies. In this paper are compared the results given by the oxygen-bomb and Carius methods, the latter being generally accepted as the standard procedure for the determination of sulphur in organic compounds. The Carius determinations given hero were made in connection with a special study of this method.4 Only petroleum oils of the less-volatile type are covered in the present work. Summary and Conclusions. When used with oils containing 2.3 to 0.15 per cent of sulphur the oxygen-bomb method gives results that are consistenly if slightly lower than those obtained with the Carius method. This variation, for the oils used, amounts to 3.1 per cent (on tae basis of sulphur present) for the sample containing 2.47 per cent of sulphur, and gradually increases (as the percentage of sulphur in the oils decreases) to 7.3 per cent for the oil containing 0.15 per cent of sulphur. With the oils studied the presence of ammonium nitrate in the bomb does not influence the results materially.

Manganese-copper alloys containing 60 percent or more electrolytic manganese exhibit an unusual combination of high vibration damping capacity with good strength properties. Properties of the pure alloys were first studied in the laboratories of the Federal Bureau of Mines and have been described in a series of technical papers1/ published from 1941-49. The unusual characteristics of these manganese-copper alloys attracted the attention of research metallurgists and several additional investigations have also been reported in the literature.2/ The engineer, also, was attracted by the combination of high strength and high vibrational damping capacity possessed by these alloys. A wide field of application in structural and machine design was obvious. However, serious difficulties encountered in commercial fabrication of structural or machine components from the alloys retarded attempts at their practical utilization. For this reason the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the United States Navy, Bureau of Ships, undertook a program designed to develop practical methods for fabricating a selected group of the high-damping alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize a part of that investigation in a form suitable for use by the metallurgist interested in commercial fabrication of the alloys.

The Ellington manganese deposit in Reynolds County J Mo., had been known for some time; and limited exploration, consisting of test pitting and sinking a shaft 54 feet deep on the property, had been done by private interests. Late in 1941, the Bureau of Mines cleaned, deepened, and sampled many of the existing pits and dug and sampled 27 new ones. The shaft was unwatered and sampled, and several pockets of manganese ore were trenched to determine their extent. Samples were analyzed and beneficiation tests on 1 ton of the ore were made at the Rolla, Mo., station of the Bureau of &apos;Mines. Results of the investigation indicated that the deposit was small and low in manganese content.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. Included in the program of the Rare and Precious Metals Station, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., are investigations of treatment methods for ores representative of various mining districts throughout the country. The samples received for this work may come from areas only recently explored or from newly discovered ore deposits in older mining districts. The present investigation deals with a case of the latter type, the. ample having come from a section that has a past record of considerable precious. metals production. The application of current treatment methods to this type of ore seems to offer excellent possibilities of satisfactory economic results. Definite identification of the silver mineral in this ore asthe chloride cerargyrite, AgCl, adds considerable interest to, the investigation, as in many cases where silver occurs in comparatively small amounts in an ore it is not possible to identify the particular mineral carrying the silver or else it is contained in or combined with other more common minerals. Cerargyrite is the "horn silver" of the bananza period and is mentioned in many accounts of pioneer mining of high-grade ores The occurrence of this mineral in finely disseminated form it a low-grade ore is believed to be unusual. The sample investigated was obtained from the&apos; Bullfrog District neat Beatty, southwest Nye County, Nevada. The ore contained 16.7 ounces of silver per ton of ore, 0.007 ounce gold, and 0.32 percent copper in a silicious gangue, with accessory minerals, including iron oxides and scorodite; the hydrous iron arsenate.

A cell concept adaptable to large-scale electrowinning of zirconium metal from zirconium tetrachloride was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Tests were made in twin cells, each 12 inches in diameter by 33 inches long. Electrowinning was performed in one chamber from which the electrolyte was transferred after electrolysis to the other chamber where it was renewed by the introduction of ZrC14 by direct sublimation. The formation of a salt plug in the connecting pipe provided a seal between the chambers. Optimum electrolyte composition, with respect to quality of the metal product (91 pct meeting ASTM standards except for the oxygen content) and current-carrying capability (about 350 amp) was determined to be 16.7 wt-pct NaF-83.3 wt-pct NaCl mixture plus ZrC14 equal to about 3 wt-pct zirconium. A twin-cell design incorporating the unit operations covered by this investigation is proposed.

It is the purpose of this paper to review theoretical model concepts in through- the -earth transmission of electromagnetic waves. While the subject is very broad in its defined scope, we will be conscious of the specific applications to mine rescue and emergency telecommunications in coal mine environments. The plan of the paper is to outline previous theoretical efforts without attempting to attach names or organizations to the specific developments. However, we include a guide to the literature as an appendix. Without pretending to be entirely impartial we include a critique of the limitations of the available analytical models. As I see it the central problem is to calculate the steady state mutual impedance of a four-terminal network that is the black box characterizing the through-the-earth path. Problems of secondary importance include the determination of the input impedances of the two pairs of terminals and the associated transient responses. [ ]

Western coal mines are operating under increasingly challenging ground conditions. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are cooperating with mines to evaluate how these conditions affect mine opening stability and related miner safety. A system was developed to monitor rock and coal stresses during mining of an entire longwall panel. The system was designed to generate data in near real time to evaluate rock behavior in roof strata and the onset of hazardous conditions as overburden stress was redistributed over working entries during gob formation. Computer simulations and in-mine evaluations were used to optimize instrument placement. A prototype packer assembly was designed and tested for installing sensitive instruments in a mine roof. This paper provides background information on the stress monitoring concept and focuses on the development of instrument placement techniques and the prototype packer assembly.

Fused - salt electrorefining has been successfully applied to the purification of vanadium metal . The electrolyte used in this refining technique was sodium chloride to which had been added 3 to 6 percent vanadium as vanadium dichloride . The average deposition current efficiency was 91 percent . Oxygen and nitrogen , the impurities in commercially produced vanadium metal , were reduced by two - thirds of the amount contained in the feed material . Hardness of the vanadium- metal product was reduced from an initial 97 Rockwell B ( RB ) to a minimum of 35 Rg . The reduction of these impurities markedly improved the plasticity of the final product obtained by melting the crystalline cell metal into small ingots . These ingots could be given a 99 - percent cold reduction by rolling before edge cracking appeared . Growing interest in high - purity vanadium and the industrial need for purer metals and improved alloys for use under high temperatures and high speeds have demanded the elimination and/or control of impurities . Accordingly, research to eliminate or control the undesirable impurities has been expanded .

"INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. Except where otherwise stated, this report describes conditions only to the time of completion of the Bureau of Mines investigations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy.
