A case study is presented that relates statistical descriptions of joint sets to the distribution of local wedge failures along the crest of a catch bench at the Yellowstone Talc Mine. The fracture sets and bench width were mapped by teams of geological engineering students from Montana Tech under the direction of Dr. Mary MacLaughlin. The students analyzed the fracture data, conducted physical property tests, and used a beta version of a NIOSH program “Bwedge” to predict the distribution of surviving bench widths. In the course of this analysis the students developed evidence of software performance issues that, unfortunately, frustrated their analysis. These have now been addressed and a full analysis completed. The analysis confirms the validity of the student mapping program and provides insight into the effects of blasting and excavation practices on the bench. It also provides a tool for exploring the pattern of bench crest failure that would result from variations in both bench geometry and blasting practices.

Only limited work has been reported in the literature about the use of latex in soil. Unisol 91 2,3 (a 9:l oil-latex emulsion made b International Synthetic Rubber Company) and Phil1ips Petroset4 geotechnic emulsions are surface soil stabilizers which penetrate a maximum of two inches, but do not reduce permeability. Diamond Alkali 5 found that styrene-butadiene rubber latex as a one percent latex-soil mixture reduced permeability to 0.7 from 21 feet per year under a head of twenty feet of brine. We have found no literature reference for use of latex as sealant at depth in the soil, although asphalt has been applied at depth using civil engineering methods6,7. Most of the materials investigated as soil sealants in the present work were latexes, although some studies were also conducted with a variety of inorganic and organic chemicals. Of the latexes tested, most were rubber but a few were plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride. Sealants examined in this investigation are listed individually in Table I with supplier, code number, and other pertinent information. The materials consisted of the following general classes with additional details as indicated: 1.Anionic latexes: a. styrene-butadiene copolymers and terpolymers (SBR) b. butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (Paracrils®) c. polyvinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers (WC) d. ethylene-propylene terpolymer e. vinyl acetate homopolymers and copolymers (VA) f. acrylics (acrylate copolymers) g. 2-chlorobutadiene homopolymer (chloroprene) (prepared specially as cationic material coagulated by soil). 2. Water Soluble polymers: a. polyvinyl ether b. methylcellulose c. polyethyleneimines d. polyacrylic acid homopolymer e. copolymers and terpolymers with acrylic acid types (water soluble as sodium or ammonium salts) f. alginates g. monomers (for polymerization in soil, e.g. acrylamide)

Supernatant media of dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) were inactive in assays for both Interleukin-1 and fibroblast growth factors (FGF). We have begun to evaluate several factors that may interfere with dust-PAM interactions. To determine the effect of sterilization on the activity of dusts, PAMs were exposed to autoclaved dust, heat-sterilized dust or to dust that had not been heated. Supernatants from the first two groups were inactive in the FGF assay, but supernatant from PAMs exposed to unheated dusts stimulated growth of lung fibroblasts. Recent data have revealed that freshly crushed mineral dusts possess labile free radicals that are absent in dust that has been stored for more than a few days. Suspensions .were prepared of a "stale" sample of anthracite dust 867 and of a freshly ground sample of the same dust. These suspensions were instilled intratracheally into guinea pigs under general anesthesia. Two, five or eight days later, PAMs were collected from the lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage, and the cells were counted. At two and five days after instillation, all lavage suspensions contained 70 to 85% PAMs, of which 5 to 18% contained phagocytized dust particles. On day eight there were again 80-84% PAMs in all suspensions, but in the presence of "fresh'" dust, 48% of PAMs. had phagocytized particles in comparison to 16% in the presence of '"stale'" dust. A similar experiment was performed in short-term cell culture. During 24 hours, >95%. of PAMs phagocytized dust particles, whether or not the dust was "stale" or '"fresh". Our studies are being extended to determine the effect of (1) removing surface oil contaminants by organic extraction and (2) suspending dusts without surfactant.

The total production capacity of the natural-gasoline industry increased to 27,212,000 gallons (647,905 barrels) daily on January 1, 1950, from 21,322,000 gallons (507,670 barrels) daily on January 1, 1948. The rate of growth during these 2 years averaged 13 percent per year, compared with 9 percent per year from 1946 to 1948 and 6 percent from 1944 to 1946. The total number of operable plants on January 1, 1950, was 554, 5 more than at the beginning of 1948. The number of absorption plants increased by 12, the number of cycling plants by 7, and the number of combination plants by 4. The number of compression plants and charcoal plants continued to decrease. Absorption plants accounted for 67 percent of the total capacity on January 1, 1950, compared with 62 percent 2 years previous. Eighty-two per- cent of the expansion in these 2 years was in absorption-plant capacity. Cycle plants accounted for 24 percent of the total industry capacity at the beginning of 1950, compared with 27 percent on January 1, 1948. The average daily capacity of absorption plants increased from 38,400 gallons at the beginning of 1948 to 50,600 gallons at the beginning of 1950. During the same period, the average daily capacity of cycle plants decreased from 150,200 gallons to 144,100 gallons. Texas showed the largest gain in number of plants 13 absorption, 4 compression, and 4 cycling plants. The State accounted for 67 percent of the gain in capacity and on January 1, 1950 had 50 percent total national capacity. Louisiana followed with 7 additional plants. Pennsylvania reported 14 and West Virginia reported 13 fewer plants than in 1948. Most of these reductions were in the number of compression plants.

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

"The Bureau of Mines has studied blasting practices in metal mines of the Southwest. The investigation of blasting drift rounds showed among other results, that cut-holes in ground difficult to break could be chambered to advantage under some conditions.In open--cut mines, chambering nearly all holes before blasting is the common practice. Two or more free faces are generally maintained in this type of work, and the amount of explosive necessary to break any bench or bank can usually be estimated from the yardage to be moved. However, in blasting drift or tunnel rounds only one free face is available before the cut-holes are shot, and the quantity of explosive required is generally ascertained best by trial.In addition to being the most difficult to break, the cut-holes are the most important of a drift round. When the cut-holes ""break bottom"" less work is required of the other holes, and a full break of the round is generally obtained. In ground difficult to blast, extra care and expense are justified to insure that the cut-holes ""break bottom.""At many mines the work is so organized that all blasting is done at the end of the shift, and a decided advantage would have to be gained to make chambering of the cut-holes economical. Also, in many mines blasting during the shift would not be practical. One or two holes could probably be drilled during the time necessary to do the chambering. However, under certain special conditions, such as in small operations or those where ""leasers"" or contractors are working, drill holes could be chambered should there be an advantage in doing so. Moreover, in some mines it might be practical to chamber the cut-holes at the lunch hour. In ordinary rounds the cut-holes are generally drilled by noon. It would not be necessary to tear down the drill or remove tools from the face to do this work of chambering."

Measure the daily exposure of individual miners to alpha particles emitted by radon daughters (radioactive decay products of the radon gas present in the mine atmosphere). Approach A dosimeter worn by a miner counts alpha particle emissions from radon daughters, RaA (Polonium 218) and RaC (Polonium 214), collected on a filter, and stores the gross count for later readout. How It Works A pump draws air into the detector assembly where radon daughters are collected on a filter. The detector, a solid state surface barrier type, is mounted in the filter head behind a thin mylar disc which serves as a moisture barrier. When a radon daughter decays and its alpha emission strikes the detector, the alpha particle causes a pulse of electrical charge in the detector. The circuits used to condition and count the electrical pulses generated in the detector are represented by the other blocks shown in the simplified block diagram. Each pulse is first amplified.

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon, found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp., and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT.

A motion transducer based on coherent mixing of laser light backscattered from rough surfaces is evaluated in terms of sensitivity, bandwidth and range. Tests made with a prototype composed of a 4-mw HeNe laser, a silicon avalanche photodiode, and a 15-cm aperture telescope demonstrate that remote measurements with reasonable bandwidth and accuracy are feasible at distances up to 100 meters.

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

In order to assist the various Federal and State agencies using large quantities of coal to select coal best suited technically and economically to their use, the United States Bureau of Mines has placed at their disposal a fuel inspection service. As part of this service, inspections are made at the mines which propose to furnish coal to these agencies on contracts. Such inspections cover both the mine itself to ascertain its capacity to fur- nish the desired tonnage and quality of the coal, the preparation of the coal in the tipple, and the obtaining of samples for analysis to determine the quality of coal as shipped. To insure that the sample sent to the laboratory for analysis is representative of the average quality of the coal, increments are taken at intervals until a gross sample of about 1,000 pounds of coal has been collected from each of the sizes of coal shipped by the mine, while coal has been coming from all parts of the mine. In reducing this gross sample to the small sample which is sent to the laboratory for analysis it is necessary to crush and quarter the coal by a certain standardized method until only 5 or 6 pounds of coal small enough to pass through a 3/16-inch square-mesh screen remains. The ordinary method which the bureau has followed was to crush the coal by hand with a tamper, such as is used for tamping concrete, on some hare smooth surface and to reduce the volume by quartering and riffling. During the past few years the demands from various Federal and State agencies for this service have been increasing rapidly in respect to bituminous coals. In addition to this, which might be called the normal increase, numerous requests have been received for similar service in respect to anthracite. It was obvious that if this increased demand was to be met it would be necessary either to increase the force allotted to this work or to provide the present force with some means by which their work could be made more effective. A care- ful survey of the situation showed that the greatest amount of time was consumed in trans- porting the men and their equipment from mine to mine in the same district, and in reducing the gross sample to the small finely crushed sample which is to be sent to the laboratory. Both of these phases of the work could be greatly accelerated by providing a motor truck of suitable speed and capacity, carrying a power-operated crusher, and the proper auxiliary equipment to store the gross sample as collected and to reduce it in volume efficiently after it has been crushed. Such a truck has been provided and placed in service. In the eight months it has been in operation the desired results have been fully attained. About twice as many samples as usual have been taken during that time by the same 2-pan crew assigned to this work. Many of the mines in the eastern part of the United States are in hilly or mountainous regions and can be reached only over rough, practically unimproved roads. "Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. On the other band they are the only safe means for exploring mines and other places filled with irrespirable gases in high concentrations."
