Table 8 provides data for the estimated value of world export trade of all mineral commodities from 1980 through 1991. It also provides a breakdown of the total into mineral fuels and non fuel minerals. These data have been developed from UN export trade data presented in table 9. The percent distribution and growth of the value of world export by major commodity groups are presented in tables 9, 10, and 11, respectively. In terms of industrial minerals (nonmetals), data in tables 10 and 11 include crude industrial minerals only, while table 8 includes an estimate for other industrial minerals. The 1991 estimates that appeared in the 1991 issues of this publication have been revised. It is typical for this section to review the year prior to the year of review because of the unavailability of data at the time of publication. The aggregated value of export trade in mineral commodities for 1992 was not available at the time of publication. The total value of nonfuel and fuel mineral exports for 1991 was about $616 billion in current (1991) dollars. The value of mineral fuel export trade accounted for about 53 % of the total mineral export trade. In 1980, the contribution of mineral fuel to the value of mineral commodity export trade had been almost 68%. The 1991 world mineral commodity export trade represents a 5.3% decrease (table 8) from that of 1990. The largest decrease was attributed to the decrease of export trade of fuel minerals (5%). The value of non fuel mineral export trade decreased by 4 %. Because the value export trade of all commodities increased by 1.2 %, the share of mineral commodities decreased from 19.2 % to 17.9 % of the total.

Lower costs associated with hands-on training in donning and using a CSE ,self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). Background In June 1987, the Mine Safety and Heath Administration (MSHA) issued an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) requiring that all persons entering underground coal mines must be given bands-on SCSR training. The ETS will shortly be replaced by a new standard requiring this hands-on training. Bureau of Mines research has shown that the most effective means of delivering this training is to have the trainee go through a six-step training procedure while in a kneeling position. Once the miner has looped the neckstrap over his or her head, he or she completes the donning sequence in this order: 1) activate oxygen; 2) insert mouthpiece; 3) put on nose clips; 4) put on goggles; 5) adjust neck and waist straps; and 6) replace miner's cap and prepare to move out. This procedure is repeated until the miner demonstrates that he or she is proficient at the task.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has classified diesel exhaust as a potential human carcinogen. Though standards for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the work place have not been established, concern for the health of miners is prompting mine operators to consider methods for reducing worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Approach One of many methods for reducing DPM being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of additives in diesel fuel to improve combustion. Research Results Three fuel additives have been tested in Caterpillar and Deutz diesel engines which are similar to types used in underground mines. One iron-based additive containing ferrous picrate had no effect on emissions. A second iron-based additive containing ferrocene reduced DPM between 5 and 45 pet depending on engine operating conditions. The 37-pct reduction for an 8-minute duty cycle, which includes a wide range of transient loads and speeds, is considered to represent in-mine performance.

A review of all upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (UECTD) injuries was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for 1985 through 1989. This review was performed by analyzing each injury, as reported by law and maintained on the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's accident data base. This analysis found that incidence rates in mining were lower than in private sector industry, although the number of reported UECTD injuries increased sevenfold and their percentage of all mining injuries increased fivefold from 1985 through 1989. Metal-nonmetal mines accounted for 80 pct of UECTD injuries, while coal mines accounted for 20 pct. Nearly 63 pct of UECTD injuries were accounted for by only four occupations-mechanics, laborers, boney (crusher) operators, and miners not elsewhere classified (NEC)-with an incidence rate well above the private sector industry rate.

Screen material in the form of welded wire mesh and geogrids are used in underground coal mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock from the roof between roof bolts. Further, if the screen is installed during the production cycle, roof fall injuries can be reduced significantly. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), because of the safety implications, conducted an evaluation of screen materials commonly used in U.S. coal mines to determine their support characteristics and identify the parameters that could affect their performance with respect to controlling the fall of rock from the roof surface. To evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen, a test frame was designed and installed in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). With this test set up, the screen is bolted at four corners of the frame and a center load is applied. The test set up allows for up to 20 in of screen deflection while the load and screen defection are continuously recorded. A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of various parameters such as bolt tension, the type of load bearing surface and the size of bearing plates on welded screen performance. The most common screen material used in U. S. coal mines is an 8-gauge wire welded in a 4-by-4-in spacing or aperture. The peak screen load was normally limited by wire breakage. The conditions at the bearing plate influence the nature of the wire breakage. However, the screen stiffness was controlled by slippage at the bearing plates, and by weld and wire failure. The size of the bearing plate had a significant effect on the performance of the welded screen. Therefore, the design capacity of the 8-gauge screen is evaluated based on plate size. For a 6-by-6-in bearing plate the average peak load is 2,900 lb with a stiffness of 250 lb/in. For an 8-by-8-in bearing plate, the average peak load is 4,500 lb with a stiffness of 430 lb/in. These test results are based on a 4-by-4-ft bolt spacing. A geogrid mesh was also tested.

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

Materials handled at metal and non-metal mines in the United States increased 10 percent compared with those of 1965 as a result of expansions in output at existing mines and development of others to meet increasing demands for mineral products. The tonnage of commercial materials mined or quarried increased as did the quantity of waste handled. Crude material from which metal or nonmetal products were derived comprised 71 percent (75 percent in 1964) of the total materials handled. Great strides were made in mining technology and there were indications that, in the future, earth moving by the mining industry will involve materials-handling systems of increasing size and complexity. Materials Handled.-Output of ore and waste at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries in the United States in 1966 totaled 3,518 million tons (3.213 million tons in 1965). The quantity of materials handled has increased at an average annual rate of 5 percent since 1962. Ore production increased 4 percent over that of 1965, also comparable to the average annual rate of increase in the last 5 years. Waste removal in 1966 increased 25 percent over that of the previous year.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data indicates that the roof bolting machine is third among all equipment and second among equipment in underground coal mining whose operators exceed the MSHA-PEL (Mine Safety and Health Administration-Permissible Exposure Limit). In response to this, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted a study to reduce overexposures of noise to operators of roof bolting machines. An important segment of the research is to determine, characterize and measure sound power levels radiated by a roof bolting machine during different drilling configurations. The determined sound power levels generated during the drilling cycle are of major interest because the levels represent the overall sound power generated by the machine. These sound power levels, determined from laboratory tests, can be used to accurately assess the effectiveness of proposed controls for reducing noise exposure to roof bolting machine operators. By using the sound power level results obtained from the laboratory and a commercially available acoustical modeling package, a method for predicting sound pressure levels to roof bolting machine operators for differing drilling types and parameters could be determined. This paper provides a method for predicting sound pressure levels at the operator’s position of a roof bolting machine in an underground coal mine using sound power levels determined in the laboratory. To determine validity, underground coal mine data was also collected to compare predicted and measured sound pressure levels. The results of the predicted sound pressure level data were the same as the underground measured results. This research will provide the mining industry with a valid method for predicting a roof bolting machine operator’s noise dosage underground given any type of drilling configuration or drilling method utilized from laboratory testing.

The flammability of trichloroethylene vapors in air has been determined in a 7-inch cyclindrical vessel. Saturated flammable mixtures were formed with air at atmospheric pressure between 30° C (86° F) and 82° C (180° F); the trichloroethylene concentrations at these temperatures are 12.5 (lower) and 90 (upper) volume-percent, respectively. Further study is necessary to assess the effects of different variables on the flammability of this material. INTRODUCTION Trichloroethylene (TCE) (ClHC = CCl2), sold under various trade names (Blacosolv, Perm-A-Clor, Tri, Triad, Triclene, Trivec, Tromex, Vapoclean, Vapoclor, Westrosol, etc.), is an important industrial chemical. A summary of its physical and chemical properties is given in table 1. It is used to degrease metals, leather, and textiles, to extract residual oils from vegetable oil cakes, for dry cleaning, and in soap. It is a powerful solvent for fats, resins, bitumens, rubber, sulfur, and phosphorus. Several explosions in which trichloroethylene was involved prompted an investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the conditions under which such accidents can occur.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). Cerium and thorium sulfides have found use as crucible materials for melting certain radioactive metals. However, thermodynamic treatment of these sulfides has been hampered by lack of experimentally derived entropy values. This Bureau of Mines report describes heat-capacity measurements between 51° and 298° K, and entropy evaluations at 298.15° K, for cerium monosulfide (CeS), cerium sesquisulfide (Ce2S3), and thorium disulfide (THS2). The entropy values, with Literature results for the heats of formation, are used to obtain free energies of formation at 298.15°K. MATERIALS The samples used in this work were supplied by Prof, Leo Brewer of the Department of Chemistry, University of California. The methods of preparation and some of the physical and chemical properties of these sulfides were given by Eastman and coworkers.3 4/ Chemical analyses, conducted in our laboratory, gave the following results:

The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of berylliferous tuff from Spor Mountain, Utah, were determined in laboratory research conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Two beryllium-bearing minerals--a hydrated form of bertrandite and a berylliferous saponite--were found to be present in the tuff. Each of the beryllium mineral forms predominated in samples from certain areas of the district. The possibility of practicably separating the beryllium minerals from the tuff by physical methods appears remote because of the complexity and nature of the mineral associations. Beryllium mineralization in the region occurs in a rhyolitic tuff usually overlaid by unaltered rhyolite. The beryllium is distributed erratically throughout the tuff in individual mineralized bodies. Many samples of mineralized tuff were examined and found to contain from 0.2 to 1.8 percent BeO. All samples contained a hydrated form of bertrandite that was nearly cryptocrystalline, whereas samples from one area also contained a berylliferous saponite of variable beryllium content. Neither mineral has been previously reported, although related bertrandite-like minerals have been found in the U.S.S.R. and berylliferous minerals of the montmorillonite group have been synthesized. Most of the minerals of the tuff are finely crystalline, intergrown, and have similar densities. The complexity and intimacy of the mineral associations, the difficulty of achieving effective mineral liberation, and the highly friable nature are characteristics that lead to the conviction that tuff of the type examined cannot be effectively concentrated by gravity, magnetic, electrostatic, attrition, washing, sizing, or flotation methods.

The work of the operational communication systems' group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

Many mines rely on toxic gas sensors to help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This report describes a prototype monitoring system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) that uses light to power and communicate with several remote toxic gas sensors. The design is based on state-of-the-art optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers, and fiber optics. This design overcomes several problems associated with conventional wire-based systems by providing complete electrical isolation between the remote sensors and the central monitor. The prototype performed well during a 2-week field trial in the USBM Pittsburgh Research Center Safety Research Coal Mine.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system’s design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

In this investigation, the ampoule type of carbon-monoxide (CO) detector which is manufactured under license of U. S. Patent 1,644,014 (October 4, 1927) was tested for sensitivity and reliability. This detector was devised primarily for examining the air of manholes and sewers for possible dangerous contamination with CO before workman enter those places, but dine to the simplicity of the device it may have a more general usage for examination of atmospheres which are known or suspected to be contaminated with CO. Some of the suggested uses are the examination of the air in garages, tunnels, mines, around blast furnaces, gas plants, and in the home.
