While the statistical summary focuses on 1991 data, this update and outlook section draws on information available to the author as of the date of final preparation in early 1993. For all the press notoriety associated with the shift in the Near East crisis from the defensive posture of Desert Shield to the restoration of Kuwaiti sovereignty through Desert Storm, this was not the dominant event governing global economic thinking in 1991 and the first half and more of 1992. From the global perspective, the momentous political changes in the area that was the U.S.S.R. and in the smaller emerging transitional economy states of Eastern Europe will have even greater current and long-lasting effects on world mineral industry activities than the crisis in the Near East.

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

Poor lubrication reduces the life of wire hoist ropes when they are used in corrosive environments. Although lubricants are added to ropes during the manufacturing process, these lubricants can deteriorate during use, and it is often necessary to add more lubricant to both the interior and exterior of the rope while it is in service. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effectiveness of synthetic lubricants, using electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT) to measure deterioration in ropes while they were in service. For nonpressurized lubricant applications, synthetic lubricants appear superior to petroleum-based lubricants in their ability to penetrate to the interior of a rope. Therefore, the synthetics offer better wear and corrosion protection.

In the course of the work currently conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48 on identifying sulfur compounds in petroleum, a micromethod was developed (12)5 for catalytically removing the sulfur atom from sulfur compounds. The product is the residual portion of the molecule; the structure otherwise was unaltered except for hydrogenation of any unsaturated bonds that were present in the original compound. Positive identification of sulfur compounds isolated from crude oils is a difficult problem. Direct comparison of properties of the unknown with those of reference compounds is often impossible because of the limited number of reference sulfur compounds available. However, a relatively large number of pure hydrocarbons is available, and the conversion of the sulfur compound to a hydrocarbon enhances the possibility of identification. The technique also can be used to prepare microquantities of scarce hydrocarbons by hydrogenating compounds that are readily available.

Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. A new phone system was developed that provides eight full duplex communications channels over a single twisted shielded phone line, with no central switching station or line amplifiers. This system greatly simplifies installation and maintenance over that required with conventional switching systems. The system is based on microprocessor technology and digital frequency synthesis. Frequency division multiplexing is used over a bandwidth of approximately 300 kHz, and a baseband voice channel (compatible with conventional pager phones) is provided as a backup to assure communication if the multiplex features fail. Multiplex operations are controlled over a 30-kHz digital channel. The system is designed to operate with up to 16 km (10 miles) of cable plant and a maximum phone separation of 8 km (5 miles). The digital techniques permit a limited amount of monitoring and control capability to each phone. This consists of two pair of contact inputs or outputs, to be used as desired. These "flags" may be read or controlled by a dispatcher's phone.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of titanium from 39 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries. The evaluated properties account for 76 pet of the market economy country demonstrated resources, which total 603 Mt of contained titanium dioxide (Ti02) in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, and anatase, and represent 95 pct of current production. Approximately 250 Mt of contained Ti02 could be economically recovered from evaluated titanium operations at January 1992 market prices. In terms of mineral concentrates, this equals approximately 19 Mt of rutile concentrate, 110 Mt of ilmenite concentrate, 47 Mt of synthetic rutile concentrate (in addition to the ilmenite), and 160 Mt of titanium slag that could be recovered. Over the past decade, the titanium minerals industry has adapted to the changing market. In the 1980's, titanium producers expanded production because of the rising demand for titanium products. Today, the titanium industry is in a state of overcapacity, and byproduct revenues, such as that from zircon, have become essential in keeping operations profitable. The industry has also witnessed a greater dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, such as titanium slag and synthetic rutile, because of the expense of rutile and the lower wastes emitted from these upgraded products. As a result of this dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, South Africa has become a leading titanium producing country and has displaced Australian production.

Important contributions can be made to conservation of natural resources by recovering mineral values from primary and secondary metallurgical slimes and flue dusts. This applies particularly to ultrafine mineral particles that escape recovery by conventional mineral dressing. In the interest of economy and conservation the Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental properties of ultrafine mineral values in slimes as a means of developing new or improved methods of mineral recovery. The work described in this progress report was carried on in the Bureau's laboratories at Rolla, Mo., from 1951 to 1953. The mineral material used as a subject for study was tin-ore slimes. DESCRIPTION OF TIN SLIMES The tin slimes consist principally of quartz, with appreciable quantities of tourmaline and sericite mica and small amounts of cassiterite, pyrite, hematite, and arsenopyrite. The tin content is approximately 0.5 percent.

"Diesel exhaust soots were assayed in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay system using TA 98, the soots being applied as the following preparations: dispersion in dipaimitoyl glycerophosphoryl choline (DPL), dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPP!), and dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) in physiological saline, and in physiological saline without added surfactant. The extracts of soots by dichloromethane / dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/BHSO) were also assayed. Studies were performed both with and without :IQ microsomal activation of the soot preparations. The DPP! and DPPA surfactants were chosen as phospholiridz with two palmitic acid moieties esterified to a glycerol as is the case with DPL, but with hydrophilic groups having different electrophilic characters. The soots, without S9 activation, showed mutegenic activity when extracted in the conventional procedure with DCM/DMSO. The mutagenic activity of soots dispersed in DPL was quantitatively comparable to, and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by DCM/DMSO. Soots in other surfactantpreparations, DPP! and DPPA, also expressed positive mutagenic activity. Praincubation with S9 microsomal enzyme fraction reduced the activity of solvent extracted soots, and greatly diminished the activity of DPL dispersed soots. Initial sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays using the Chinese hamster V79 cell line indicated DPL dispersed soot also can cause SCR in mammalian cells. Results thus far suggest that surfactant suspended or ""solubilized"" respirable soot particles could provide a mechanism for transport and expression of mutagens in the lung."

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management~ the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 7,600 and 3,000 acres, respectively, of the Slocum Creek (OR-003-075) and Upper Leslie Gulch (OR-003-074) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their mineral resources. They are located in Malheur County, OR, about 25 mi northwest of Jordan Valley. Both areas have an occurrence of stone (welded tuff) covering about 3,000 acres which is suitable for construction purposes including road metal, ballast, and road fill. However, similiar deposits are more accessible and closer to markets.

A mineral investigation of prospects in the Sawtooth Mountains B Wilderness Study Area (WSA) by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1983 revealed none had mineral production, resources, or development potential. The area is underlain by tonalite and smaller amounts of schist, One developed prospect and one prospect pit are in the WSA. They are in schist similar to host rock which has yielded gold in nearby mining districts, Sand and gravel deposits in the WSA are large but too far from markets to be considered resources. No energy (oil, gas, coal, or geothemal) resources were identified in the USA.

Slope stability accidents are one of the leading causes of fatalities at U.S. surface mining operations. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to reduce the fatalities associated with slope failures. The purpose of this paper to discuss some of this research and to present potential new technologies for slope monitoring and design. The paper also briefly discusses various warning signs of slope instability, introduces the most common slope monitoring methods, describes the limitations of various slope monitoring systems, and presents some field results using some of this new technology.

Mining companies are usually held responsible for accidents occurring to the public around their operations . Safeguards are provided by progressive mining companies to prevent the public from getting into danger from wandering unattended about the properties . At abandoned operations , where little or no supervision can be maintained , persons are often injured through the negligence of the operator in leaving the property in unsafe condition . After a mine is abandoned or a lease is given up by a mining company , the responsibility for the safety of the property rests sometimes with the State to which the property ownership reverts or with the owner of the land ; either is usually quite unwilling to spend any money to remedy unsafe conditions due to the carelessness of the mining company . The land owner or the State , or both , should see that the work of leaving safe conditions behind is done by the operator before he abandons the mine or gives up the lease . Some of the worst hazards to the public at abandoned mines are from old test pits , abandoned shafts or tunnels , open pits , caved ground , and bodies of water in abandoned open pits . Hazards exist from some of these sources during the active operation of a mining property as well . In the early stages of mining operations test shafts are often sunk from 50 to 100 feet deep through the more or less loose material overlying bed rock . When these shafts are left unprotected , they are a serious danger for many years to come . In the course of time they become largely concealed by brush and grass , and thus are a deadfall to anyone who might happen to step into them . This condition will hold true for any part of the country, but to a much less degree where it is not necessary to sink through a great amount of cover . Many progressive operating companies have adopted the practice of filling in test pits after securing the information desired . Some nonresident landowners and exploration companies , however , have left such pits open , and it is extremely difficult for the mine inspector to get into communication with the owner . A mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines revealed no mines or prospects and no past or present mining claims in the Agua Tibia Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The area is underlain mainly by weakly foliated gabbro similar to rock that has hosted gem- and lithium-bearing pegmatites in the Pala district about 6 mi to the south. However, no gem- or lithium-bearing pegmatites have been discovered in the WSA. Nearby quarries in the gabbro have yielded rock for facing and dimension stone. No sand, gravel, or energy (oil, gas, coal, or geothermal) resources were identified.

"The American Consul at Guatemala City reports that the Guatemala Marble Mining Company is preparing to operate a marble quarry about 13 miles from the railroad station of Zacapa, which station is a little over 100 miles from Puerto Barrios, the nearest port from which the product may be shipped. The deposit is extensive, and though somewhat broken up in places, great quantities of sound marble are available. It is claimed that the marble is equal in quality to the best product of the Italian Carrara quarries.Access to the quarry by rail is obtained by a spur track of the International Railways of Central America (Ferrocarril Internacional de Centro America) from Marmol, 3 miles south of Zacapa. This spur is about 5 miles long and terminates at the foot of the mountains. A double-track incline cable-way 2000 feet in length has been constructed to bring the marble down the mountain. From the top of the incline to the quarry there is a railway six miles in length over which the rock will be hauled by two side-geared Shay locomotives."

During August, two eastern Kentucky coal miners died in a roof fall during retreat mining operations. They had just finished extracting one pillar block and were moving to the next one when the intersection they were standing in collapsed. Regrettably, this was not an isolated incident. Since the end of 2000, there have been 28 ground fall fatalities in U.S. coal mines. Of these, 10 occurred during pillar recovery operations. Although pillar recovery has been associated with about one third of recent ground fall fatalities, it accounts for only about 10% of U.S. underground coal production. Statistically, a coal miner engaged in pillar recovery is several times more likely to be killed in a ground fall than a miner on an advancing section of a longwall. Pillar recovery is dangerous because it creates an inherently unstable situation. Once the pillars are extracted, the roof is expected to cave. Safe pillar recovery does not mean preventing roof collapse, it means ensuring that it only occurs after the miners have completed their work and have left the area. Fortunately, there are a number of proven techniques that can greatty reduce the hazards of pillar recovery. These include better mine planning, improved roof support, and safer work procedures. The goal of this article is to describe the most significant "risk factors" associated with pillar recovery, and prescribe control techniques that, taken together, can reduce the overall risk to miners. The conclusions are based on extensive studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that have included detailed analysis of every fatal retreat mining incident since 1992 (25 incidents resulting in 30 fatalities). Risk reduction strategies for pillar recovery can be divided into three main groups: Global Stability: Prevention of section- wide pillar failure; Local Stability: Prevention of roof falls in the working area; and Work procedures and worker location: Minimizing exposure to hazardous areas.

Thermal decomposition of copper (II) sulfate (CUS04) and copper (II) oxy-sulfate (CuO?CUS04) are important steps in the overall oxidative roasting of covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S). Nonisothermal thermogravimetric techniques were used to investigate the decomposition reactions in flowing Na and air. Thermal decomposition of CUS04 and CuO?CUS04 followed "linear" kinetics with an apparent activation energy of 55±2 and 66±3 kcal per mole decomposed, respectively. These apparent activation energies comply with those previously reported when isothermal kinetic techniques were used. The addition of oxygen decreased the rate of decomposition, while small amounts of iron which were admixed with CuO?CUS04 did not have a significant effect. Neither oxygen nor iron had any appreciable effect on the apparent activation energy of the decomposition reaction.

Study Design. A split-plot experimental design was used to evaluate the influence of posture, trunk angle, and rotational velocity on peak torque output and myoelectric activity during maximal trunk extension maneuvers. Objectives. To determine whether the kneeling posture alters extension torque capabilities in isometric and isokinetic exercises as compared with standing. Also, to ascertain whether recruitment of trunk muscles is modified by such a postural change. Summary of Background Data. Factors such as workplace geometry may force workers to adopt awkward or unusual postures in the performance of manual tasks. An understanding of the limitations placed on strength in unconventional working postures is crucial to the proper design of jobs. Methods. Twenty-one healthy male subjects (mean age = 36 years 7 SD) performed 12 trunk extension exertions in standing and kneeling postures. Isometric tests were performed at 22.5°. 45°, and 67.5° of trunk flexion. isokinetic tests were done at three velocities: 30°/sec, 60°/sec, and 90°/sec. Electromyographic data were collected from eight trunk muscles to assess muscle recruitment under each condition. A prior; orthogonal contrasts were specified for analysis of both torque and electromyographic data. Results. The kneeling posture was associated with a 15% decrease in peak torque output when contrasted with standing; however, no concomitant change in trunk muscle activity was evident. Trunk hyperflexion (isometric tests) and increasing rotational velocity (isokinetic tests) were associated with reduced torque in both postures. Trunk muscle activity was primarily affected by changes in trunk angle and velocity of contraction. Conclusions. A reduced extensor capability exists in the kneeling posture, despite equivalent trunk muscle activity. The similar activation patterns in both postures suggest that the strength deficit does not result from alterations in trunk muscle function. Rather, it may be the consequence of a reduced capability to rotate the pelvis in the kneeling posture, due to a disruption of the biornechanical linkage of the leg structures. Dust explosion data obtained in laboratory tests by the Bureau of Mines are presented for 73 chemical compounds and mixtures, 29 drugs, 27 dyes, and 46 pesticides. Information is given on ignition temperatures of cloud and layer, minimum igniting energy, minimum explosive concentration, percent of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, limiting oxygen concentration in the atmosphere to prevent ignition, and pressures and rates of pressure rise at dust concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ounces per cubic foot. Explosibility indexes are computed where data are available to permit comparison of the relative explosion hazard. Variations of explosibility parameters with chemical composition are discussed. General means for minimizing the dust explosion hazard are reviewed.

According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury database, 227 knee injuries were reported in underground coal mining in 2007 [ 1]. Low-seam coal mines are those with extremely low working heights (<42?). Gallagher et. al [2] found that the average cost per knee injury in low-seam coal operations was $13,121.29. Thus, it can be estimated that the financial burden of knee injuries was nearly three million dollars in 2007. Pressure applied to the knee while kneeling and crawling is likely a risk factor. Typically, mine workers utilize kneepads to better distribute the pressures at the knee; however, their ability to reduce the stresses at the knee is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the pressure applied to the knee during static postures used in low-seam mining while not wearing kneepads and while wearing two kneepads commonly used in the industry (one articulated and one non-articulated).
