The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Risk factors associated with the development of muscu­loskeletal discomfort and disorders during the operation of heavy mobile equipment include whole-body vibration and awkward and sustained joint postures of the shoulders, neck, and trunk. Cab design may influence awkward postures of the joints, and task duration may influence duration of exposure to awkward and static postures and whole-body vibration. To reduce exposure to risk factors related to the interface between cab design and task, it may be necessary for manufacturers to address cab design. This study assessed the repeatability of a cab design checklist developed to evaluate various design characteristics that can influence exposure to risk factors for musculoskeletal discomfort. The ability of the cab design checklist to identify posture-related deficiencies of design was also assessed. The checklist was used by two administrators across 10 pieces of heavy construction equipment. Video analysis was performed to quantify postures of the neck, shoulder, and trunk; correlation analysis was used to determine whether specific questions from the checklist were associated with the identification of awkward postures. The repeatability assessment resulted in kappa coefficients ranging from 0.52 to 1.0 (good-to-excellent reproducibility) across each piece of equipment, and an overall kappa coefficient of 0.77 (excellent reproducibility) when considering all equipment together. Results from the correlation analysis showed that shoulder flexion posture was correlated with scores from the cab design checklist. However, results of the cab design checklist were not significantly correlated with shoulder abduction or awkward postures of the neck and trunk. Results suggest that the cab design checklist may be useful for identifying cab design characteristics that need further improvement and for identifying design characteristics that increase shoulder flexion. The strength of the repeatability assessment suggests that outcomes of the cab design checklist administered by different individuals may be consistent, independent of the type of equipment being assessed.

As part of an effort to decrease U.S. dependence on imports of critical and strategic metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated three leaching methods for extracting the base metals and recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from matte prepared from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrates. Because of a limited supply of natural material, synthetic matte of composition similar to matte prepared from natural concentrates was used to devise the extraction sequences. The validity of the sequences was verified with matte prepared from Stillwater concentrates. In two-stage matte leaching, first-stage H2S04 leaching extracted 99 pct of the nickel and iron from the matte but negligible amounts of copper and PGM. Second-stage oxidative leaching with Fe2(S04)3 or FeC13 solubilized more than 98 pct of the copper and no precious metals. Sequential leaching, in which acid and oxidizing lixiviants were added sequentially to the matte without an intervening filtration step, extracted 99 pct of the Fe, Ni, and Cu. A roasting-leaching technique, in which the residue from first-stage leaching was roasted between 360° and 500° C before a second leaching with H2S04, solubilized 98 pct of the copper. The three leaching methods yielded high-grade PGM residues containing more than 98 pct of the PGM in the matte.

"The fly-ash problem of the smoke-abatement engineer - who now might well be titled, ""Smoke and Fly-Ash Abatement Engineer"" - starts with the necessity for him to know what fly ash really is, what plants really create it, and how much is being created. Fly ash in this connection may be defined as all solid particles emitted to the atmosphere as a result of the combustion of fuel.COMPOSITION OF FLY ASHMuch can be learned about fly ash by studying samples with a strong magnifying glass or, preferably, a high-power microscope. As an example, figure 1 is a photomicrograph of an underfeed-stoker fly ash weighing 23.7 pounds per cubic foot, which passed a baffle-type cinder catcher and was caught by a Cottrell precipitator. Figure 2 shows a similar fly ash made at a higher stoker rating and weighing 36.2 pounds per cubic foot. The lighter ash contains more light, unconsolidated ash than the heavier. In both instances some of the ash has been fused to a glass, as is indicated by the spherical particles resembling marbles; however, the heavier dust contains more and larger spheres. With the faster burning and higher air pressures occurring at the higher burning rates, more of the larger fused spheres reached the precipitator.Such studies of fly ash frequently make possible correct determination of its source. For example, the Supreme Court Building, one of the finest of the Federal buildings in Washington, was having considerable difficulty with fly ash from some outside plant. It was thought to come from a nearby apartment house. A fly-ash trap was installed there, and care was taken in the operation of their underfeed stokers. The fly-ash nuisance continued. Microscopic examination of the fly ash found about the building compared with samples taken from the stack of the apartment house showed to the surprise of the accusing building superintendent that the present source was elsewhere. By the same means, the source was found to be a plant about ore-half mile away."

Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic supply was evident, During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Mines has ascertained the potash resources in certain districts through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the Passage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

In the context of a proper legal/regulatory regime, deep ocean mining system design, site survey, and operation technologies are capable of rapid evolution. The report recommends that the regulatory framework develop in parallel with the industry and presents a rationale for implementing this approach. The Government has several interests in deep ocean mining technology: (1) as a potential regulator, sound regulations should be based on an understanding of the technology; (2) as a potential monitor, survey technologies are relevant; and (3) as an estimator of strategic minerals supplies, it is important to understand the technology which allows economic access to deep ocean minerals. Thus, the major portion of the report presents an in-depth review of systems design, operations, and survey equipment and techniques.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. As a part of our study of how coal mine dusts injure the lung we have studied the effects of dusts and dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) on the growth of lung fibroblasts (LF). Fibroblasts were cultured near confluence in low-serum medium, either alone or in the presence of dusts, dusts plus PAMs, dust leachates or superriatants of dust-exposed PAM cultures. We report here provisional conclusions, based on initial observations. Rat LF were relatively unresponsive to direct effects of dusts, showing weak stimulation in only a few cultures, and there was no evidence that dust-exposed rat PAMs had released any growth-regulatory products. In contrast, guinea pig cells were more responsive to the dusts. The pattern of responses was quite complex. Three of the dusts stimulated LF directly (with no mediation by PAMs). Two dusts were essentially inert when added directly to fibroblast cultures, either with or without PAMs, but their leachates were active: 867 leachate was inhibitory and RF leachate was stimulatory. Dust 1361, either directly in the cultures or as an aqueous leachate, was stimulatory, and it activated cocultured PAMs to stimulate LF growth; however, supernatant products of 1361-stimulated PAMs were inhibitory. Direct exposure to 1192 stimulated LF, but its leachate was inert; cocultured PAMs exposed to 1192 had weak stimulatory effects, but supernatants of 1192-exposed PAMs were mildly inhibitory. MP3-3 had effects similar to 1192, except that the cocultured, dust-exposed PAMs had no effect on growth. We conclude 1) that guinea pig lung cells are more responsive to dusts than are rat lung cells, 2) that dusts can influence growth of LF by four kinds of interaction (by direct dust-cell interaction, by release of soluble dust components into the culture medium, by activating P AMs to exert direct cell-cell interactions, and by activating P AMs to release growth regulatory products into the culture medium), 3) that each kind of interaction may be neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the dust tested, 4) that four of the dusts tested were neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the assay (the fifth <lust was either neutral or stimulatory), and 5) that the effects of soluble mediators (leachates or products of activated PAMs) frequently did not correspond with the direct dust-cell or PAM-fibroblast effects. These results suggest that the nature of the dust-lung interaction at the level of cells and molecules is exceedingly complex. These observations need to be confirmed and extended to determine what characteristics of the dusts determine the nature of the cellular responses, and to determine which patterns of responses are detrimental and which are beneficial in the overall health of the dust-exposed lung.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated residues from aluminum plants, to determine if carbon could be removed by flotation while recovering fluorine and aluminum compounds for recycling to the reduction process. This publication summarizes studies on samples representing three types of plant waste products, supplied by three aluminum-producing companies. Samples of flue dust, pot skimmings, and pot linings from the various plants all responded to a simple turpentine flotation scheme to reject 90 to 97 percent of the carbon. Aluminum compound recoveries ranged from 42 to 94 percent on the flue dust, were about 95 percent on the pot skimmings, and ranged from 75 to 89 percent on the pot linings. Fluorine recoveries from the same samples ranged from 35 to 63, 92 to 95, and 77 to 86 percent, respectively. The pot linings contained soluble salts of aluminum and fluorine which were recovered by precipitation with sodium aluminate and carbon dioxide gas. Composites of residues from each plant responded to flotation much the same as the individual samples. Aluminum is produced by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten cryolite bath. The electrolytic reduction cell consists of a carbon-lined box containing a pad of molten aluminum which serves as a cathode, a carbon anode, and an electrolyte of molten cryolite in which the alumina is dissolved. Alumina is reduced to aluminum at the cathode, and carbon is oxidized at the anode.

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the first of several dealing with the application of flotation methods for beneficiating the calcareous and siliceous red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones of the Birmingham district. The flotation study was part of a general investigation of the concentratability of various iron ores of Alabama and other Southeastern States undertaken by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.Batch testing and pilot-plant flotation testing of the calcareous red ores of the Birmingham district have been in progress for several years, and although some phases of the study are not yet completed, enough data are available to indicate that many of the ores will yield marketable-grade concentrates with good recovery.The first flotation tests on the calcareous red ores employing conventional methods either the iron oxides or the siliceous gangue materials failed to give the desired results. The inferior separations obtained or prohibitive reagent requirements made the methods unattractive. Other more effective flotation methods were sought. A laboratory study of various reagents was undertaken. It resulted in the development of two attractive methods embracing anionic flotation of the activated siliceous gangue from the retarded iron oxides. The methods were similar in that fatty acid or soap-collecting agents were employed in strongly alkaline pulps to float the naturally activated quartz from the iron-ore pulps. The methods differed, however, in the addition agent employed to retard the hematite or hematite and calcite. By proper choice and quantity of the addition agent, the calcite could be floated with the quartz or retarded with the hematite as desired. Ability to recover or reject the calcite gives added flexibility to the separation. Although the methods have their limitations and cannot be considered ""cure-alls,"" they have given encouraging results on a number of calcareous red ores that heretofore proved difficult to concentrate by conventional flotation procedures."

"INTRODUCTION The highly mechanized character of modern warfare makes steel the most vital raw material. The shortage of steel scrap in the United States is forcing the use of increased quantities of pig iron in steel manufacture, so that the rate of pig-iron output will continue to be the controlling factor in steel production. 5/ At the same time, the construction of new blast furnaces is limited both by time and the amount of strategic material available. Under such circumstances, every effort must be made to attain and then maintain maximum pig-iron output from the equipment now in use.When forcing a blast furnace to the ultimate in production the highest standards for quality and uniformity of the coke must be maintained. In view of these facts, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Coordinator for War, is surveying the coke industry to study the various steps in producing coke of higher quality and greater uniformity. 6/ The engineers conducting the survey are visiting key men in coke-oven and blast-furnace organizations to determine, first, the major and most common problems in coke production and use; and, second, the best and quickest method for solving them. Various operators have made good progress in solving individual problems, and a Nation-wide exchange of information among them will make possible widespread adoption of the best practices. It is the purpose, of the survey and reports such as this preliminary one to facilitate such exchange of information. As an outgrowth of the survey, it was soon revealed that many operators could be helped by cooperation with various Government agencies, particularly to procure suitable coals, minor additions to equipment facilities, and tests on certain properties of coal or coke, or specific advice concerning the operation of various types of equipment. The machinery and organization necessary for securing this cooperation have been set up as a part of this work."

THIS BULLETIN analyzes and summarizes research at the Bureau of Mines dealing with the preparation, properties, and reactions of iron carbides in the period 1948-60, part of which was sponsored by Wright Air Development Laboratories. The objective was to develop better catalysts for the synthesis of methane and higher hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The investigations resulted in the first adequate characterization of epsilon iron carbide, which later proved to be an important intermediate in the tempering of martensite in steel. At temperatures near 170° C, the carbon in carbon monoxide reacts nearly quantitatively with finely divided alpha iron to form an iron carbide in which the metal atoms occupy the positions of the close packed hexagonal arrangement with lattice parameters of ao=2.754 A and co=4.349 A. The carbide has a composition within 2 atomic percent of that required for the formula Fe2C, a Curie point of about 370° C, a specific magnetization of 160.4 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, and a ferromagnetic moment of 1.70 Bohr magnetons. Epsilon iron carbide can be converted to chi iron carbide by thermal treatment at 343° C for about 70 hours. The chi iron carbide so formed has a Curie point of 247° C, a specific magnetization of 142.5 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 5.5 Bohr rnagnetons per iron atom. Direct synthesis of this carbide from carbon monoxide at 240° C indicates a composition within 7 atomic percent of that required for Fe2C. Chi iron carbide can be converted to cementite at 550° C in about 315 minutes. The theta iron carbide so prepared has a Curie point of 210° C, a specific magnetization of 147.3 ergs per gauss gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 3.9 Bohr magnetons per iron atom. Pure chi iron carbide reacts to form theta iron carbide by the elimination of free carbon. In the presence of an excess of free iron in intimate contact with the carbide, chi iron carbide reacts with the free iron to form theta iron carbide. The second reaction proceeds at an appreciable rate at 320° C and can be used to snythesize finely divided theta iron carbide with no free-carbon impurity at low temperatures. The ease of the reaction in the presence of free iron suggests that chi iron carbide is an intermediate in the tempering of epsilon iron carbide to theta iron carbide as it proceeds in steels. Experiments on carbon steel show that the magnetic moment of the iron atoms in martensite is about 2.2 Bohr magnetons per atom, a value approximately the same as that of the iron atoms in alpha iron. The Curie points of epsilon iron carbide, chi iron carbide, and theta iron carbide were found -in various specimens of tempered steel to be 10° to 20° C lower than normal values. This shift is probably the result of manganese in solid solution. Preparations of various compositions of epsilon iron carbonitrides show many effects of extensive isomorphism between epsilon iron carbide and epsilon iron nitride. The action of carbon monoxide on finely divided alpha iron at 400° C results in free carbon deposits containing filaments about 0.1 micron in diameter and several times as long. The filaments are characterized by nuclei of dense material located midway from each end of the filament. Although carbiding to near completion at 240° C over periods of about 300 hours produces a preparation containing no appreciable percentage of epsilon iron carbide, very brief periods of carbiding of the order of a minute result in the formation of detectable epsilon iron carbide even at temperatures as high as 325° C. The data indicate that epsilon iron carbide is an intermediate in the formation of chi iron carbide during its formation from carbon monoxide in the gas phase. Attempts to convert cementite to chi iron carbide by cold work increased the Curie point but did not change the X-ray powder diffraction pattern.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Harrison County, W. Va. It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.5 million tons of coal was produced in Harrison County, W. Va., in 1958, of which over 3.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in seven preparation plants. All of the coal cleaned was from the Pittsburgh bed. It has been estimated that more than 1,816 million tons of coal remains in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Pittsburgh and Redstone beds were selected by the Bureau for a study based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected following a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Six samples were collected from the Pittsburgh bed, and three samples came from the Redstone bed, Float-and-sink tests of the samples collected from the Pittsburgh and Redstone beds showed that neither coal could be upgraded to a metallurgical fuel under the standards set up for this study, even after intensive preparation. Finer crushing of the samples moderately increased the yields and slightly reduced both the ash and the sulfur contents in the 1.30-specific-gravity float fractions. Finer crushing slightly decreased the yields in the 1.58-specific-gravity float fractions, whereas it reduced the sulfur content 0.11 percent for the Redstone sample and 0.46 for the Pittsburgh sample.

Increased exploration in Alaska has resulted in many requests to the Bureau of Mines for facts about the mineral resources and mining conditions in the Territory. This report presents information about the minerals of Southeastern Alaska and the factors that affect development of a mining industry in that area. Southeastern Alaska is a narrow coastal strip of rugged mountains and many islands. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 40° and heavy rainfall. Geologically, the region is favorable for deposition of ore; geographic-ally, it is difficult to prospect and to develop, except along areas immediately adjacent to the coastline.

[The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based&apos; on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. "INTRODUCTION In cooperation with the Boston Edison Co. and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Boston Edison Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes from May 1, 1933, to October 15, 1937. Yearly reports. 6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published.The methods and procedure of conducting the survey in 1937 were the same as heretofore."
