The Bureau of Mines has used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-1R) to study in situ reactions of aqueous solutions of potassium ethylxanthate with CU(II)-and Pb(II)-activated sphalerite plates, in which the plates were both the infrared-transparent windows and the reacting surfaces. A copper (I) ethylxanthate formed predominantly with Cu(II)-activated sphalerite, regardless of the activation time. The products formed on Pb(II)-activated sphalerite depended on the activation times; a short activation time (30 min) yielded a lead ethylxanthate-like product, but a long activation time (90 min) yielded a considerable amount of dixanthogen.

"The mathematical treatments used in the evaluation of particle size distribution from pipet-withdrawal centrifuge data are reviewed. An error in the published procedure for multiple-sample withdrawal systems is pointed out and a corrected formulation is presented. An alternative treatment, based on a piece-wise linearization of the size distribution is described. Computer simulations of the analytical and data evaluation procedures indicate that the errors in the original formulation are not generally serious and that the corrected and alternative procedures lead to very similar estimates. Except for some cases involving very narrow size distributions, the alternative approach appears to give slightly closer estimates of the size distribution. Comparisons based on actual experimental data are also described.1 IntroductionSedimentation methods are widely used for the determination of particle size distributions. The procedures are relatively simple to use and the results are essentially absolute, requiring no external calibration. This publication describes development by the Bureau of Mines of a quality evaluation procedure for certifying the adequacy of production lots of Kroll process zirconium sponge the Bureau had produced for reactor applications. After the procedure was devised, the next step was to apply it in controlling the quality of one-half million pounds of zirconium sponge com-prising 259 production lots, called blends, originating at the Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau at Albany, Oreg. The Bureau concluded that the evaluation method developed was adequate and that by this method the zirconium blends having impurity levels or other property values outside specification limits were differentiated and thus were diverted from nuclear energy end uses. The research was performed under contract for the Bureau of Ships, Department of the Navy, and for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.

The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the El Paso Natural Gas Co. investigated the effect of high temperature and pressure at short residence times on the hydrogenation of a New Mexico coal to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons . The study was made in a bench - scale semicontinuous unit at pressures of 500 to 6,000 psig , 480 ° to 1,000 ° C , and residence times of less than 1 minute to 15 minutes . Ammonium heptamolybdate was impregnated on the coal to furnish 1 percent molybdenum based on maf coal . Coal could be rapidly hydrogenated at elevated temperatures and pressures to yield large quantities of gaseous hydrocarbons and small quantities of lowboiling oils , high in single - ring aromatics . At 800 ° C and 6,000 psig and a residence time of 1 minute , the yield of hydrocarbon gas was 43 percent and of liquid hydrocarbons 9 percent , based on maf coal . With a 15 - minute residence time , the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons increased to 68 percent with a decrease in yield of oil to 6 percent . At higher hydrogen velocities , the yields of oil were much greater but contained large quantities of asphaltene . Low concentrations of molybdenum (0.01 and 0.1 percent ) or a high concentration of iron ( 1 percent ) were ineffective at 800 ° C , 6,000 psig , and short residence time .

Physiol. 256 (Cell Physiol. 25): C405-C412, 1989.-A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared with experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The 02 was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH,) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: 1 ) the production of extracellular 02 from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, 2) the subsequent dismutation of 02 to form H,O,, and 3) the reaction of 02 and NBT to form diformazan. NBT specificity for 02 was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) that catalyzes the dismutation of 02 to H,O,. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations because NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 mo! wt) compared with SOD (34,000 mol wt). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/ or electrostatic effects, since SOD is also negatively charged, whereas NBT is positively charged.PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria. This process is accompanied by the production of superoxide anion (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane (3, 31). Superoxide readily dismutates to form H20 2 and subsequently, other oxygen metabolites which have been shown to be both antibacterial and cytotoxic (21, 25, 35).Superoxide is produced from the reduction of extracellular O, at the surface of the cell membrane by NADPH oxidase by the following reaction (3, 4)"

A field method has been devised for rapid determination of heavy minerals occurring in the unconsolidatod beach and dune sands. The method has been proved practical by usage in field evaluations of several hundred beach- and dune-sand samples in the Florida area. The simple equipment required and the techniques involved are described. Other data show that the method is relatively insensitive to variations in the mineralogical content or size distribution of the mixed heavy minerals contained in the samples tested. A modification of this procedure, found to be suitable for plant use in determining the relative purity of heavy-mineral flotation concentrates, is also described. A specific application is determination of the amount of feldspar-quartz in spodumene flotation concentrates. The results of the rapid evaluation techniques closely approximate those obtained by more precise laboratory procedures.

Enthalpy and entropy increments above 298.15° K were determined for cop-per sulfate between 298° and 1,000° K and for copper oxysulfate between 2980 and 1,146° K by the method of copper-block drop calorimetry. Enthalpies, entropies, and heat capacities are tabulated for both compounds. In addition, free-energy functions are tabulated for the sulfate. Equations representing the enthalpies are given for each compound.

"INTRODUCTION The Philipsburg Mining District, Granite County, Mont., has been the largest producing area for battery-grade manganese (70 percent MnO2) in the United States since the First World War. Two companies, the Trout Mining Division of the American. Machine & Meals Co., and the Moorlight Mining Co., have intermittently mined and milled 120 to 250 tons of 25-percent manganese ore per day for the production of concentrates of this grade.Investigation of the district by engineers of the Federal Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines indicated that further exploration and develop¬ment would make available additional oxide and carbonate manganese ores for milling and production of metallurgical-grade manganese. If the battery-grade producers converted their plants to the production of metallurgical-grade concentrates, their production also could be increased through greater recoveries.Until February 1, 1944, the Metals Reserve Company, through its agent, the Sunshine Mining Co., purchased milling-grade manganese oxide and carbonate are for stock-piling at Philipsburg. After that time, only carbonate ore was purchased. Based upon the assumption that the stock pile was a true cross-section sample of the producing area, metallurgical studies were made on representative samples from the Metals Reserve stock piles. Testing also was conducted on two other samples of Philipsburg oxide manganese ore obtained by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the Little Dandy claim of the Donlan group and from the Marie mine. All ore samples tested were found to be amenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods for the production of concentrates that when sintered met Metals Reserve Company specifications for metallurgical-grade manganese."

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

Control the release of ground-water into active underground coal workings by short-term pumping from dewatering wells sited on fractures. Approach The sudden release of fracture-stored groundwater into underground coal workings often occurs when mine workings are developed beneath fracture valleys, Pumping from fracture trace-sited dewatering wells, prior to development of the underlying workings, can be an efficient means of intercepting fracture-stored groundwater before it is released into the mine. Dewatering operations are discontinued once the underlying mine workings have been fully developed, and the maximum possible reduction in fracture storage has been achieved through pumping. How It Works An aerial photographic technique known as fracture trace analysis is used to site dewatering wells on rock fractures in a valley bottom. Downhole caliper and temperature logs are used to assess the fracture flow potential of each dewatering well drilled.

The Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposits near Powderhorn in southern Gunnison County, Colo., were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of an overall program to investigate the Nation's titanium and iron resources. The deposits occur around the periphery of the Iron Hill stock, which underlies an area of about 12 square miles. Concentrations of magnetite, ilmenite, and perovskite arc localized along fractures in the pyroxenite stock. Mineralogical studies of composite surface samples collected in 1956 showed that most of the iron is present in ilmenite-bearing magnetite. Perovskite is the chief titanium mineral in the magnetite-rich and augite-rich types, and sphene is the principal titanium mineral in the placer material. The mica-rich rock contains approximately equal amounts of perovskite, ilmenite, and sphene.

Constant-volume charges of precipitated PETN (pentaeythrite tetranitrate) at three specific gravities (0.50, 1.00, and 1.50) were used in laboratory tests to examine the effects of changes in explosive properties on free-surface displacement pulses and on crater dimensions. The tests were performed in large blocks of cement-mortar. The values for the detonation velocity, detonation pressure, specific energy, energy density, and energy release rate were calculated from the explosive loading density. Calculated explosive properties were correlated with free-surface displacement pulse measurements, strain energy, and measured crater dimensions. Increases in explosive properties resulted in increased free-surface displacement pulse parameters and crater dimensions. The loading density, detonation velocity, energy density, detonation pressure, and energy release rate were found to be best indicators of explosive performance. Simple acoustic relationships involving impedance ratios were examined and could not be used to predict peak displacement amplitude or strain energy. Data are presented in the customary English units as well as the International System of Units (SI).

The Bureau of Mines extended its investigation of methanation catalysts. The noble metals (platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium) and rhenium), molybdenum, and tungsten were tested in hydrogenations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide at 21 atmospheres in a temperature range between 200° and 600° C. From the 8 metals studied) 25 catalysts represent 5 catalyst types were prepared and tested. The impregnated 0.5-percent-ruthenium catalyst proved to be the most active and versatile of all the catalysts produced. Tungsten and the noble metals other than ruthenium were low in activity and usually required temperatures above 500° C for appreciable production of hydrocarbons. Molybdenum was moderate in activity, but further improvement in molybdenum catalysts seems possible.

The solubility characteristics of three calcium aluminates , 12Ca0 · 7A120½ 3Ca0 A1203 , and 4Ca0 A12 03 Fe2O3 , were determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ to more clearly define their role in relation to the recovery of aluminum by the lime sinter and the lime - soda sinter processes . The calcium aluminates were prepared by sintering stoichiometric mixtures of CaCO3 , Al2O3 3H20, and Fe 0 at 1,375 ° C. The rates and extent of aluminum extractions were determined . The aluminum extractions from the aluminates were dependent on the presence of carbonate ions in the leach solutions , temperature , time , leach solution composition , and solid - liquid ratio of the slurry . The aluminum extracted from the calcium aluminates in water and in NaOH solutions varied from 4.6 to 22.9 percent . Virtually , complete extraction could generally be obtained for 12Ca0.7A120 and 4Ca0.A12 03 • Fe₂ 03 ; in one instance it was obtained for 3Ca0.A1203 , when an excess of carbonate ions was present over that required for the conversion of all of the calcium in the aluminates into CaCO3 . In some cases of poor aluminum recoveries , extractions could be improved by regrinding and releaching the solid residues .

To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines Bold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 6/The present report presents analytical data for 1,499 samples, representing the products of approximately 105 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gaso¬line are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for these analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows; Regular-price, 872 samples, 266 items, and 83 brands; -premium-price, 584 samples, 217 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 43 samples, 32 items, and 21 brands. The Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipeline for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.
