This is one of a series of papers describing mining and crushing methods and costs at cement plant quarries throughout the United States and deals directly with the methods employed and costs obtained at the Reliance quarry of the Giant Portland Cement Co. at Egypt, Pa., although it is more or less descriptive of the methods used throughout the Lehigh Valley cement district. Systems of transportation vary according to local conditions, such as proximity to the mill, depth of quarry floor with relation to the mill level, etc. Methods of prospecting differ mainly in the type f drills used. Systems of storage, crushing, and grinding vary chiefly in the types of units. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Most of the information regarding the early history of the Lehigh cement district was obtained from the History f the Portland Cement Industry of the United States, by Robert W. Lesley, the first president of the Portland Cement Association. Subsidence to surface occurs in a large proportion of underground mines. Preliminary to any indication of subsidence on the surface, there is usually a breaking up and sloughing of the cover into the mine opening which, in a period of time ranging from minutes to many years, progresses to the surface, This process is referred to as subsurface subsidence. In many mining operations, information regarding the process of subsurface subsidence is important, For example, if there are buildings or other improvements on the surface, or if the direction of the subsurface subsidence might threaten other underground workings--such as shafts--or if the subsidence might be progressing in a direction which would fall outside the anticipated subsidence limits, the problem could assume special significance.

Research and testing in a small scale equivalent of a commercial flota-tion plant was completed on four low-grade, iron-bearing materials from the western Mesabi range. Closed circuit-flotation of calcium-activated silica with fatty acid collector developed data for comparison with the batch process and highlighted problems not evident from previous bench testing. The four ore samples contained from 27 to 39 percent Fe and were equally represented by nonmagnetic taconite and semitaconite type materials. Iron concentrates containing 6.0 percent, or less, SiO2 were made 5, all four samples. Of the two material types, the semitaconite was the ore amenable to treatment, yielding iron recoveries of about 90 percent as cc pared with 70 to 80 percent for the other. Pilot plant tests showed that concentrate grade made in batch tests could be duplicated in the closed circuit and demonstrated that the amount of recoverable middling iron varied considerably between ore samples. The continuous tests also showed that water temperature strongly influenced results in the treatment of one ore but apparently was of indifferent consequence in another. Progress in thickening and filtration of flotation concentrates was made through introduction of tapioca flour to serve the dual role of iron mineral depressant and flocculant.

A statistical technique, useful to analyze assay and other data characterized by location in three dimensions, is described in this Bureau of Mines report. If present, trends in the data are defined for the purposes of improving ore estimation, predicting ore beyond existing workings, and aiding geological interpretation. The technique is to fit linear and quadratic polynomial equations to the data through the statistical method of regression analysis. The fitted linear equations have the geometric form of hyperplanes; the fitted quadratic equations have the geometric form of ellipsoids or elliptic hyperboloids of one or two sheets. To visualize these three-dimensional forms, contour maps of a series of plane sections through the fitted surfaces are plotted. Both the fitting of the polynomial equations and the plotting of the con-tour maps are done by electronic computer to facilitate calculations and to obtain accurate results. Computer programs are described in appendixes. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis) based on data from a part of the Fresnillo mine) Zacatecas, Mexico.

A number of the pegmatites in the southern Black Hills of western South Dakota contain sheet mica; and as the demand increased during World War II the area became an important producer of strategic qualities of mica. During this period of maximum activity, the U. S.. Geological Survey made detailed studies of the geological structural control, the mineralogical associations, and the production Of many pegmatites in the Black Hills. On the basis of results of this study, and at the suggestion of the Geological Survey, several of the pegmatites were examined by the Bureau of Mines, and a few were selected for further investigation. Accordingly, the White Bear, Silver Dollar, Buster Dike, and Hot Shot mines were diamond-core-drilled in 1947. The Hot Shot mine was investigated further by deepening the shaft and crosscutting the pegmatite in 1948. The mica-bearing deposits occur in lenticular intrusions of pegmatite in schists of various mineral composition. Eleven diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,111.4 feet in length, were completed on the four deposits. The shaft on the Hot Shot deposit was deepened 44 feet to the 112-foot level, and crosscuts were driven from the bottom of the shaft to the hanging Wall and foot wall of the pegmatite. This publication briefly describes the location, ownership, and history of the deposits and gives details of the work done by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 256 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1977 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Nineteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,317 gas analyses prior to 1977. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 16

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-second semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper Was published as Report of Investigations 30634 and reported data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples. The present paper deals particularly with results of the determination of copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),5 color (method 10.11),6 sulphur content by the lamp method, 7 copper dish evaporation residue (method 530.1),8 and "gum" content as given by the steam-oven method as developed by the Bureau of Mines. 9 The price at the time the sample was taken and the tax are also stated for each sample. The sample numbers used throughout this report are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 306310; ?for example, No. 225 of this report is the same sample as No. 225 of Report of Investigations 3063.

As part of an investigation of the production of alumina by the nitric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay, the Bureau of Mines designed, built, and tested a fluidized-bed system for the calcination of aluminum nitrate nonahydrate to alumina, while recovering nitric acid. The calciner consisted of an 8-in-square by 36-in-tall vessel containing 18 in of fluidized solids. Molten aluminum nitrate, sprayed directly into the fluidized solids, formed sandy, granular alumina by growth of successive layers on fluidized particles. Solids were fluidized in a dense bed at temperatures of 250° to 500° C with steam, air, or mixtures thereof. Decomposition of nitrate ranged from 4 to 10 pet during single-pass steam or air fluidization, respectively. Alumina dust losses and low throughput are significant unsolved problem areas.

In 1984, the Bureau of Mines evaluated an area previously identified as having "probable mineral resource potential" for copper, lead, zinc, gold, or silver within the Elkhorn Wilderness, about 5 miles west of Winston, MT. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mineralized structures at nearby mines and prospects outside of the Wilderness extend into and contribute to the anomalous zone and, if so, to expand the domestic supply of strategic and critical mineral resources for future needs by identifying and quantifying resources on public lands. Fifty-eight soil samples, 23 rock samples, and 1 stream sediment sample were collected in the Staubach Creek area. Overall sample analyses suggest the anomalous zone in the Staubach Creek drainage is possibly associated with -.mall pyritiferous quartz veins. These veins or veinlets may be part of a system of northeasterly-trending structures prevalent in this art of the Wilderness. However, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that identified resources outside of the Wilderness extend into it in the Staubach Creek drainage, or that economic base- or precious-metal deposits are likely.

This report describes the feasibility of predicting percussive drilling rates by equations derived from statistical regression analysis. The least squares statistical method was used and the analysis was performed both by direct and by stepwise linear regression analysis. The predicted penetration rate is a function of the drill power and the physical properties of the rocks penetrated. The results show promise that the technique may be of value in providing a mathematical model by which percussive drill manufacturers and users can predict the performance of a given drill. Experimental work involved two mining type percussive drills. Penetration data for these drills were determined from nine rocks drilled in the laboratory. Drill work rates (power) were determined in a separate series of experiments. Rock physical properties were measured from diamond-drill core samples taken from the same blocks used for percussive drilling.

As part of the Bureau of Mines critical and strategic minerals program in Alaska, 34 high-purity chromian spinel samples were analyzed for trace and major element geochemistry and mineralogy. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and chemical techniques. Systematic differences in chemistry are evident when samples collected from the Chugach Mountains and their related extension are compared with chromian spinel samples collected from interior Alaska. Compared with the Chugach samples, the interior Alaska samples have higher average amounts of A1203, Fe203, Ti02, and NiO, have lower average amounts of FeO and Cr203, and exhibit greater dispersion in values. Considerable mineralogical variability of chromian spinel exists between and within individual Alaskan chromite-bearing ultramafic complexes. Of 34 samples analyzed, 25 samples are magnesiochromite, 5 are chromite, 3 are spinel, and 1 is hercynite. As a group the interior Alaska samples have a smaller average unit cell dimension than the Chugach group of samples. The chemical and mineralogical differences between the two groups of samples can be attributed to different genetic histories and may have implications for locating chromian spinel deposits amenable to standard beneficiating techniques.

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

Research was done to determine if a hydraulically operated penetrometer developed by the Bureau of Mines could be used to estimate the roof-bolt anchorage capacity of mine roof rock. Tests were conducted both in the laboratory using cement cylinders and underground in shale rock. Hardness readings were measured by the penetrometer around the periphery of the bolt holes at the anchorage horizon. Roof bolts Nere then installed and subjected to an anchorage test. The results showed that the penetrometer readings could be used to determine the optimum stratum for roof-bolt anchorage but could not be used to make an accurate estimate of the anchorage capacity.

THE carbonizing properties of one medium- and and five low-volatile coals from West Virginia and one high-volatile A and two medium-volatile coals from Pennsylvania were determined by 800° and 900° C. BM-AGA carbonization tests and expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties of the coals and the yields and quality of their cokes and other carbonization products were determined. The low-volatile coals comprised a mine and a coke-plant sample of Pocahontas No. 6-bed coal from the. Black Eagle No. 1 mine, Wyoming County, W. Va.; a mine sample of Pocahontas No. 6 bed from the Louisville mine, Mercer County, W. Va. ; Davy Sewell bed was sampled at the Twin Branch mine, McDowell County, W. Va.; and Fire Creek bed was sampled at the Dunedin No. 1 mine, Raleigh County, W. Va. The medium-volatile coals were from the Fire Creek bed, Laurel Creek mine, Greenbrier County, W. Va.; Lower Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 4 mine, Cambria County, Pa.; and Upper Kittanning bed, Springfield No. 6 mine, Clearfield County, Pa. The high-volatile A coal represented the Upper and Lower Freeport beds, Kent Nos. 1 and 2 mines, Indiana County, Pa. In addition to the coals listed, high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa., a standard blending coal, was used in blends in this investigation.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

A nuclear meter based on measurement of prompt capture gamma rays is being developed for monitoring the sulfur content of coal streams. Equipment has been built to measure sulfur rapidly, and methods have been devised to compensate for changes in moisture, ash, and bulk density of coal flowing through a bin. Pilot plant tests of the system with various additives to different coals show a precision and accuracy of 0.02 percent sulfur and 0.04 percent sulfur, respectively. Based on these results, a hardwired meter has been fabricated for testing in a commercial coal preparation plant.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. This report summarizes the results of a hydrologic research study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in cooperation with Energy West Mining Co. at the Deer Creek and Cottonwood Mines, near Orangeville, UT. The USBM evaluated hydrologic and overburden failure data to assess the response of local ground water to underground coal mining in single-and multiple-seam conditions. Fourteen springs located over the two mines were investigated in the study along with overburden failure response caused by longwall panel extraction. Spring discharge was compared to climatic variation and time of undermining to quantify response to undermining. Spring discharge had been reduced owing to below-normal precipitation during the period evaluated. The response of springs to mining in the vicinity was influenced in part by the thick overburden present at the study site the presence of hydrophilic clays and mudstones in the overburden stratigraphy, and elevation of the springs above mine level, which buffered the effects of undermining.

The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.
