In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

In research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial preleaching oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Cyanidation at 80° C proved to be the most attractive chemical leachant, removing 34 pct of the platinum, 76 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, and 97 pct of the gold from the biooxidized concentrate. Research also indicated that increased sulfide oxidation during the preleach phase led to improved PGM recovery in the subsequent chemical leaching phase.

The evolution of surface mining equipment has resulted in larger, faster haulage units, loaders, etc., resulting in increased demands on steering technology. Careful analysis of these systems was warranted to determine if steering-related safety problems have been introduced. The objectives of this program were to: 1. Define the generic types of steering systems being used on mobile mining equipment used in surface mining operations. 2. Gather information on steering-related accidents in mining operations. 3. Assess the need for initiating government-sponsored research into steering system technology. A comprehensive literature survey was conducted concurrent with extensive contacts with mining operations, mining equipment manufacturers, steering system component manufacturers, and government agencies. A Technical Evaluation Group composed of representatives from the above organizations was formed to review the data gathered. It was concluded that the steering systems in use on surface mining equipment are reliable and do not present a safety problem. The Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc. is active in pre-paring voluntary consensus standards to assure that the minimum levels of performance are defined for industry.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

The Bureau of Mines has initiated a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Researchers involved in this pro-gram are comparing land availability, based on ownership and government policies and regulations, to the distribution of known mineral deposits and terranes. This report on southeastern Alaska presents the findings of the first of six regional studies that will cover the State. The study consisted largely of data compilation and analysis using various mapping techniques. Summary land availability data are presented on copies of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangles at a scale of 1:500,000. Five categories of land availability were identified: open to mineral exploration and development (approximately 9.4 million acres, or 38% of the 24.8-million-acre study area), open but with possible use restrictions (4.2 million acres, or 17%), selected (0.5 million acres, or 2%), patented (0.74 million acres, or 3%), and formally closed to mineral exploration and development (10 million acres, or 40%). Of the 1,187 known mineral deposits in the study area, approximately 38% are on land in the open category. Mineral terranes comprise approximately 6.7 million acres, or 27% of southeastern Alaska. Approximately 34% of these terranes are on open land.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureaus of Mines on a fluorite deposit, near Glenwood, N. Mex. Results of wagon drilling, crosscutting, and test pitting are given, together with results of metallurgical tests made upon samples of the ore. Mining and treatment methods are suggested.C. H. Johnson, Bureau of Mines engineer, examined the deposit in August 1942. H. E. Rothrock, of the Federal Geological Survey, completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the fall of 1942. As a result of these brief investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves, and exploratory work was recommended. G. A. ApelI, also of the Bureau of Mines, made a topographic and underground survey and report on the mine in March and April 1944. A wagon drill, air compressor, and other equipment and supplies were delivered to the property on May 19 to 23, 1944. Drilling began under the direction of the author on May 25, 1944, and was completed in October 1944. The results of drilling and. sampling form the basis of this report."

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch; Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The problem of obtaining enough manganese for use in the manufacture of steel appears likely to recur when international relationships are disturbed and to become serious at any time when the United States is cut off from its customary supply. Some idea of the problems that an e under war conditions may be obtained from a description given by Ellicott3/ in 1918 before the American Iron and Steel Institute. This condition arises because in normal times there is an economic advantage in importing available high-grade foreign ores to the neglect of our own less satisfactory resources. That considerable low-grade manganese ore and a much smaller amount of high-grade material are available in this country is well known from geological surveys 4/ and has been confirmed by Bureau of Mines investigations. Locations of the various deposits are indicated in figure 1. The possibility of greatly expanding domestic production was actually demonstrated from 1913 to 1918, when the annual production of manganese from domestic ores rose from about 4 percent to approximately 35 percent 6/7/ of the total consumption of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen. In idea of how domestic production compares with total consumption in the United States can be obtained 1 from figure 2, taken from the Minerals Yearbook8/ for 1970. Assuming that it is possible to increase production of manganese ores sufficiently to supply all our needs, such a program presumably would require 2 or 3 years, and the cost of production would certainly rice considerably, for some time at least. Because of an urgent national need for manganese, the deposits in the Little Florida Mountains of Lune County N. Mex., were visited by O.H. Metzger, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 12 and 13, 1940, accompanied on the second day by S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey. After this preliminary examination, it was recommended that exploratory work be done by the Bureau of Mines on several properties in the district. An exploratory project of trenching, sampling, and core drilling was started by the Bureau of Mines in September 1940 and completed in May 1941.2/ Work was done on three properties - the Luna mine, the American group of claims, and the Manganese Valley mine. The Little Florida manganese district is situated on the eastern slope of the Little Florida Mountains about 2 miles south of U. S. Highway 80-90, 12 to 14 miles southeast of Deming, Luna County, N. Mex. The principal claims comprise the Luna Manganese, American, and Manganese Valley groups.

This program involves testing to determine whether a fire hazard exists when the exposed wood surface area of timber in a mine passageway equals 40 percent of the surrounding strata surface, excluding the sill. Twelve full scale fire tests were conducted in a simulated mine passageways, using kerosene pan fires as the ignition source. The tests included three timber sizes, plus one test with roof lagging, two wood types, plus one test with treated timbers, and two ventilation air velocities. The results show air velocity to be an important factor in the occurrence of flame propagation, and that the 40 percent surface area ratio of wood to surrounding strata appears to b0. a valid criteria for fire safety at 150 fpm, but not at 350 fpm.

Bureau of Mines engineers examined the chemical and biological treatment of sewage water designed in one case for reuse and in another for subsurface injection. In the first case discussed, approximately 6 million gallons per day of sewage are treated by the activated sludge process followed by tertiary treatment that includes ion exchange. The renovated water is used in the industrial complex. Liquid industrial waste is sent to a waste disposal facility where it is treated for injection into a deep subsurface formation. In the second case, a community of 3,000 people is using a lagoon sewage treatment system followed by subsurface injection of t- treated effluent. Subsurface disposal is used to avoid growth of algae and weeds in a nearby lake to which the treated effluent was originally discharged. The renovation of municipal water for reuse provides a source of water for industries in a semiarid region and may also provide a source for domestic use in densely populated regions where domestic water requirements have priority over industry needs. In addition both waste treatment systems provide examples of the use of subsurface waste disposal to avoid pollution of surface streams.

GOLD output in Alaska in 1950, following a 2-year decline, increased to the highest point since 1942. Tills unexpected gain in production of the Territory's greatest value commodity was largely responsible for the increase in the over-all value of mineral output in the Territory to $17,852,000 from $15,549,000 in 1949. Although coal continued to rank second to gold in value of output, production was slightly less than the record production of 1949. The mining of platinum continued to be an important factor in the mineral industry, with production of crude platinum metals exceeding that of 1949. The output of lead was three times the 1949 production, and silver gained 46 percent over the previous year's total. Copper and zinc production-entirely as byproducts from other ores-showed an increase, but remained minor. Production of tin was relatively small, but substantially above the total for 1949.

The borehole surveying system described is used to measure ground movement over and near operating mines. The magnitude of any movement is con-trolled by the ground conditions, the mining method, and the mine progress. By correlating these factors with the measured movement, equations can be determined for predicting the effect of mine progress on the surrounding ground. These equations can also be used to predict the effect of mining a similar deposit with similar ground conditions. The borehole surveying system is used in cased boreholes to measure the inclination of the hole in two perpendicular planes. Grooved casing with an inside diameter of 3 inches is grouted in the hole. Two probes are used to obtain the data necessary to calculate the hole position versus depth. One of the probes contains a gyroscope, and the other contains a biaxial force-balance [s]ervoaccelerometer. Readings from the transducers in the probe are punched on paper tape by an automatic data acquisition system as the probe is pulled up the hole at 30 feet per minute by an electric winch. Readings from the inclinometer probe containing the accelerometer are used as input data to an on-line programmable calculator as they are punched on tape. The calculator computes preliminary results of the survey being made. The paper tapes obtained during the survey runs are later used as input to a computer that computes the offsets of the drill hole versus depth in true north-south and east-west planes. These offsets are printed for each foot of depth. Changes in these offsets between the first survey and subsequent surveys are a measure of the horizontal ground movement between the surveys.

This paper on the square-set system of mining embodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the Bureau of Mines general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the paper were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from Information Circulars prepared by consulting engineers to the Bureau on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The square-set system of mining is very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the United States. It is mainly employed for extracting relatively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50 per cent of the ore may be extracted by square-setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage is mined yearly by square-setting, principally in the Western States.

This report describes investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1957 through 1959 in the Roseland anorthosite-titanium belt of Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va., for the purpose of studying the titanium resources of the area. Three titanium deposits containing much saprolite ore derived from the decomposition of anorthosite and diorite were selected for detailed study Following a reconnaissance of the reported titanium occurrences in the belt. These three deposits occur in or are associated with anorthosite. Most of the occurrences are situated on or near the contact between the anorthosite and the gneissic country rock. The saprolite deposits are as much as 1.5 miles long, 1,000 feet wide, and 100 teat deep and contain significant reserves of titanium-bearing material estimated in excess of 20 million tons. Where it was penetrated by drilling, the unweathered rock beneath the saprolite contains nearly the same titanium values as the saprolite.

Tables of 28 positions for all the transitions for nine common analyzing crystals for first, second, and third order reflections were compiled by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate elemental X-ray fluorescence analysis on multi-element systems. The tables are based on a compatible set of wavelengths for 2,346 observed X-ray transitions of the elements lithium to americium. The results are tabulated in order of increasing wavelength as well as by increasing wavelength for each element.
