The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

Sludge ponds of fine coal, fine soil, and water created behind large piles of coarse coal waste can present hazardous conditions; this is a Bureau of Mines report of the subsurface physical property data developed on the fine coal waste materials that make up the core areas of two typical coal waste impoundments. These data will help define more completely the engineering properties of this problem area of the structures. Additional calorific, chemical, and mineralogical data were obtained on the coal waste materials to determine possible uses or development of byproducts. The possibility of extracting alumina from coal ash was also investigated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research into computer-assisted mining, which requires investigation of new techniques for development and application of computer-based technologies. Today's technology can require significant effort in software development, as has become evident in the early stages of this Bureau research. Technologies for software automation, such as computer-aided software engineering (CASE), are available. This report explores CASE, its general features, and its importance in software development. Information is presented to assist in selection and application of the variety of CASE tools and methods for automating various stages of software development. When evaluating CASE for use, it is important to examine tools that support an organization's existing methods of software development. Support for existing hardware platforms must also be examined. Merely selecting a "good" CASE tool does not insure success. Thorough evaluation of implementing CASE is also critical. Subjects to evaluate for CASE implementation include organization culture, support from management and end users, training resources, and pilot projects. Organizations that benefit the most from CASE evaluate CASE features with respect to their needs and they properly implement CASE.

The petroleum-refining industry established a. new record in fuel effieciency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat mere required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the 'indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio ( crude runs divided by capacity) for re- fineries increases toward tine maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average B. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

"INTRODUCTION The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war materiel; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this critical fuel situation, an investiga¬tion was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England. Meta-anthracite, which is a satisfactory fuel for some purposes, had been mined in Massachusetts and Rhode Island many years ago. However, the introduction of freer-burning anthracite and bituminous coal into New England markets resulted in the abandonment of these mines.The coal mined in the vicinity of Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island, Newport County, R. I., had been used successfully for smelting copper ore and for fuel. It is reported that this coal is less graphitic than the material mined at Cranston near Providence, R. I. The coal is meta-anthracite and does not burn freely. However, improved equipment for burning coal has been developed, and if minable reserves of meta-anthracite should be found, methods of burning it probably could be devised.The purpose of this investigation was to determine sources of additional fuel. Since meta-anthracite mined at Portsmouth had been used with some success, an investigation was undertaken to determine the characteristics and continuity of the beds in this area."

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. The basic mining law of French Morocco is the Edict of 1914, "Danir of Jamary 19, 1914, for the Regulation of Mineral Prospecting and Exploitation in the Zone of the French Protectorate of the Cherifien Empire," which, as the preamble states, was promulgated at the instance of the Director General of Public Works, in consideration of the fact that mines constitute one of the sources of wealth of the Empire. According to a consular report, dated May 18, 1923, by Bradford, men- tioned above, the mining industry of that country, aside from the exploitation of the extensive phosphate deposits, can scarcely be said to exist, but the potential field for mining is promising. However, no large-scale exploitation of the mineral wealth of French Morocco can be hoped for until there is complete pacification of large areas that are still in an unsubdued state or until adequate transportation facilities, scientific prospecting, and large investments of cap- ital are assured. An edict in 1920 (Dahir of January 27, 1920) modified the law mentioned above by declaring the prospecting for and the exploitation of phosphates to be exclusively reserved to the Government. The Dahir o. August 7, 1920, announced the creation of the Cherifien Phosphate Office (Office. Cherifien des Phosphates), a State monopoly charged with the exploration, management, and exploitation of the phosphates of Morocco.

During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau's Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer's equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of Oklahoma is the sixth in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United. States. Preceding reports* may be obtained on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples, making laboratory tests, and interpreting results are discussed in the first three papers. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped they will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines for correction before the appearance of the permanent report. Samples of Oklahoma crudes analyzed in this report were taken from those fields representing the major production of the State. The Oklahoma Geological Survey designates 172 different oil and gas fields in the State, S1 being in Osage County, 14 in Tulsa County, 14 in Okmulgee County, 9 in Washington County. The list of samples collected by the Bureau of Mines represents only 5 fields in Osage County - Bigheart, Burbank, Hominy, Osage Junction, and Pershing - yet these samples, together with those from adjoining fields, are representative of nearly all crude produced in the county. The sample 'from the Pershing field, for example, is representative of the crude produced in several fields in that part of the county - such as Nelagoney, Pawhuska, Wyomona - and the sample from the Skiatook,

COAL, salt, lapis lazuli, and construction materials such as lime, gypsum, slate and stone were the only mineral commodities produced in Afghanistan during 1963. Beryl has been produced sporadically. Small deposits of chromite and lead-zinc are known but remained unexploited because there were no domestic markets for the two commodities and transportation costs from Afghanistan to world markets were too high. Oil fields of sufficient magnitude to justify exploitation have not been discovered, but known natural gas reserves are substantial and have potential significance. There is evidence of large high-grade iron ore resources, but these are in an unfavorable location. The contribution of the mineral industry to the economy was small, although precise figures are not available. The reported value of mineral production in 1963 (excluding barite) was 181.6 million afghanis (about US$4 million). Employment in the industry, including cement plants and quarries, was estimated to be no more than about 2,000.

"The Riley tungsten property of the Northern Nevada Mining Co. was examined by the Bureau of Mines in August 1943, and from February 22 to August 22, 1945, the property was explored by the Bureau.Riley mine, which comprises 60 acres, is in sec. 9, T. 38 N., R. 42 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in the Potosi Mining District, on the east slope of the Osgood Range in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. J. S. Riley is president of Northern Nevada Mining Co., the general offices of which are at 29 East First Street, Reno, Nev.Winnemucca, Nev., 42 miles southwest of the mine and on the main line of the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads and U. S. Highway 40, is the nearest supply center. The post office for the Potosi district is 15 miles south at Red House, Nev., a station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. A good dirt road, which leaves U. S Highway 40 about 15 miles east of Winnemucca, extends northeast to the property.Tungsten occurs as scheelite in a characteristic Nevada contact-metamorphic tactite deposit between limestone and granodiorite Fifteen diamond-drill holes were completed for a total length of 2,630 feet.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. For many years, much thought and effort have been devoted to the achievement of safety in the use of explosives by those interested in the preservation of human life and the protection of property. As a result, we now have adequate rules pertaining to the safe use of explosives , which, if observed, would prevent many, perhaps ail , of the explosives accidents that yet occur . Although the rules respecting the use of explosives are believed to be well - known, many accidents occur because they are disregarded . The mental awareness aroused by a tragic accident usually will cause safety precautions to be taken for a while ; however , this awareness gradually disappears unless a sincere effort is made permanently to prevent similar accidents . Frequently, because safe methods are more irksome than unsafe methods , the lessons taught by accident experience are forgotten in a short time , vigilance is relaxed , and there is a gradual return to unsafe , easy methods of performing work. If the preservation of human life is important , the unfortunate experiences of others and the lessons taught by them should be applied to reduce unnecessary loss of life . The value of a life lost as the resuit of accident should be calculated not only from the monetary and humanitarian standpoint but also according to what the accident could contribute in the way of saving other lives and suffering . This saving of other lives can and will , if the lessons from unfortunate accidents are applied , convert a loss to a gain a gain of such magnitude that the accident victim could be considered

In this comprehensive study of the use of wood products in coal mining, a sample of over 220 mines provided data by questionnaire. Wood use per ton of underground coal was found to vary substantially by mining process and region. In the Eastern Coal region, 1.6 board feet of wood was used per ton of coal, wel above the 0.6 board feet usage per ton in the West. The kind of timber used varied also by Region. Hardwood use is about 40 times greater than softwood in the Eastern Region. There, hardwoods are plentiful, relatively cheap and strong. In the West where softwood forests predominate, softwoods were 2-1/2 times more common in mine wood use than hardwoods. Nearly 80 percent of the wood used in underground coal mines is used in cross bars and props. Nearly 54 million cubic feet of wood products were used in coal mining in the sample year 1979; about twice as much going to underground mines as surface mines. Wood requirements for mining were projected to 2030 for a range of three oil price scenarios. Much greater wood use will be required for greater coal output.

Several federal and state agencies have promulgated regulations that require the installation of operator protective structures on mobile equipment used in mining, construction, agriculture and logging industries. These regulations cover many different types of vehicles, from small farm tractors to large rubber-tired front-end loaders, and require structures that help protect the operator from death or injury from vehicle overturns, from falling tree tops and logs, from falling rocks, and from tree limbs in clearing operations. Two general types of vehicle operator protective structures have evolved over the past twenty years. The first of these is the "Roll-Over Protective Structure" or "ROPS" that is essentially a "roll bar" or "roll cage" that provides a relatively safe area for the vehicle operator if the vehicle should tip over and roll. The second protective structure is the "Falling Object Protective Structure" or "FOPS" that provides overhead protection against falling material. The terms "ROPS" and "FOPS" are often used interchangeably (sometimes inaccurately) with "cabs", "canopies", "roll bars', "protective structures" and other such descriptive names. In this report, 'ROPS" describes the function of the structure; 'FOPS" also describes a particular function. Thus a ROPS/FOPS could describe a cab or a canopy that provides both roll-over protection and falling object protection.

Poroplastic membranes containing ion exchange liquids were studied for separating cobalt from nickel-containing solutions similar to ammoniacal laterite leaches. The driving force for cobalt transport was differences in pH and composition between the leach and extraction streams. Using a diketone ion exchange liquid, a leach pH of 6.5 to 7.0, and a strip pH of 2.3, cobalt was extracted from a 750 ppm solution containing 2500 ppm of nickel at rates ranging from 1 to 10 µg/cm2 .min in single membrane cells, and from 10 to 100 in more closely spaced multiple membrane cells. Rates were variable, with evidence that cross -membrane flow pasterns were a key factor; a reproducible rate of 30 pg/cm .min would be economically viable. Loss of transport observed after several days of continuous operation was restored by flushing membranes with fresh ion exchange liquid. A major effort was devoted to preparation of thin, leak-free membranes; the resulting membranes endured operating conditions without mechanical failure.

Under the investigation for critical and strategic minerals the Kaiser mine, formerly the Baxter fluorspar property, in northeastern Mineral County, Nev., was explored. The work comprised excavating 32 trenches averaging 90 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 1 1/2 feet in depth. The trenches were excavated across the strike of the ore body to enable the engineer to spot the diamond-drill holes; 7 such holes were drilled, aggregating 3,276 linear feet. A total of 20 core samples and 107 sludge samples was taken. The work under this program indicated that the fluorspar southwest of the deposit extended laterally and also at depth at least 250 feet below the 400-foot level. INTRODUCTION The Kaiser fluorspar deposit is in the northeastern portion of Mineral County, Nev. Mining was begun about 1928, and the property has been a consistent producer of both Acid- and Metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The mineralized zone has been developed along a strike length of about 2,000 feet and to a depth of over 700 feet along the dip.
