"I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. (l)The direct economic costs to this nation resulting from a decision to embargo South African strategic and critical minerals imports are estimated at $1.85 billion per year.2,3 About 94 percent of these estimated costs are for two platinum-group metals (PGM's), platinum and rhodium. The estimated costs of a 5-year embargo beginning in 1988 for the strategic and critical minerals analyzed are presented in Table 1.4 (2)There are sufficient alternative world sources to South Africa for manganese, chromium, palladium, titanium, and vanadium to meet U.S. industrial demand in the event of an embargo. (3)Alternative world sources to South Africa for platinum and rhodium cannot meet U.S. industrial demand. Non-South African world supply sources can meet about 40 percent of domestic platinum consumption requirements and 50 percent of rhodium requirements. (4)As a result of the increase in prices for platinum and rhodium during the embargo, expansion of domestic platinum-group metals mining and secondary production is expected. During a five year embargo, domestic primary and secondary production expand and together satisfy about one-third of U.S. platinum requirements, one-third of U.S. rhodium requirements, and over one-half of domestic palladium requirements.

The crystal structure of hematite, a-Fe203, has been refined as part of a continuing study of the behavior of phases in the Fe-O system during reduction and oxidation. Three-dimensional diffraction intensities were collected on two spherical single crystals of hematite with a semiautomated Buerger single-crystal diffractometer. The first crystal refined was a natural Elba hematite with minor impurities. The other, a synthetic crystal, was refined at the request of Mossbauer spectroscopy investigators concerned with impurities in the natural crystal. The structure has been refined with a least-squares program and the final structure for the natural crystal irradiated with CuKa-radiation gave a discrepancy factor (R) of 3.65 percent using 49 unrejected reflections of the 51 measured. For the synthetic crystal, using MoKa-radiation, the discrepancy factor converged to 2.8 percent using 95 unrejected reflections and was 3.3 percent for all 109 reflections. The structure model of Pauling and Hendricks has been confirmed with essentially no change in the iron coordinates and approximately a 5-percent change in the oxygen coordinates. Selected interatomic distances and angles were calculated as were anisotropic temperature factors.

The secondary copper industry is comprised of numerous enterprises which collectively employ many of the recovery and refining processes now used in primary plants as well as many other processes that are unique to the industry. Effective methods are used for identifying and segregating all types of scrap according to widely accepted standard classifications. Segregated scrap and waste materials usually require some preliminary processing to remove both valuable and deleterious associated constituents. Smelting, melting, alloying, and pyrorefining are common methods used for producing secondary metal, but operating techniques usually differ from primary metal operations because of the difference in physical and chemical properties of the respective raw materials. Some copper scrap is converted to copper chemicals rather than to refined metals or alloys. Recovery efficiencies of all processes are reasonably high, and the quality of products meets rigid specifications.

Pollution from radioactive nuclides, principally Ra226, in liquid waste from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Vitro Chemical Co.-type process was investigated in the laboratory. Vitro employs an acid leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and amine solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium from solution. The simulated reuse of barren raffinate in the mill circuit was carried through two separate laboratory campaigns of 29 and 31 cycles. Conventional chloride stripping of the amine was employed in the first campaign, whereas nitrate stripping was used in the second campaign. Dissolution of uranium from the are in the acid leaching circuit averaged 96 percent. Washing efficiencies of 98 to 99 percent were attained by using 4 volume tons of combined raffinate and makeup water per ton of ore. Uranium recovery from the pregnant solution using a 5-percent solution of amine LA-1 in kerosine ranged from 99.3 to 99.9 percent.

As part of its mission to maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national needs and maximize mineral production from domestic sources, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. Most iron impurities are leached from the clay along with the alumina and must be removed before or during crystallization to aluminum chloride hexahydrate. The thermal decomposition step then provides an alumina product of acceptable iron analysis. Miniplant studies of a Bureau-developed solvent extraction technique, using a tertiary amine in kerosene diluent, have demonstrated that the iron content in aluminum chloride leach liquors can be reduced to levels of less than 0.007 wt-pct (7 ppm), expressed as Fe203. Entrained and dissolved organic matter in the purified pregnant leach liquor from the solvent extraction circuit can be reduced to less than 2 ppm by using a fabric-packed coalescer and subsequent activated carbon treatment. Investigators discovered that a steady buildup of zinc accumulated in the solvent phase within the extraction circuit, proportional to the amount of leach liquor treated. The solvent phase zinc analysis increased by 0.01 wt-pct ZnO for each 1,000 gal of pregnant leach liquor purified.

This report summarizes a study conducted to establish the nature and impact of regulations governing disposal of refuse from underground coal mines. The regulations affecting refuse disposal in eight major coal producing states are collected, summarized and reviewed. Federal regulations applicable to refuse generated by underground coal mines are also included. Common refuse disposal practices are discussed as are the refuse quantities generated annually in each study state. Technical requirements of regulations are discussed acid presented in appended tables. Economic implications are also assessed through cost analyses of three major types of disposal processes. The report also includes an assessment of future trends in regulation and refuse generation plus a series of recommendations concerning potential improvements in both the regulatory and refuse disposal processes.

Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

A 1984 Bureau of Mines investigation identified ho mineral resources in the Wilderness Study Area (WSA). However, four prospects in the WSA contain anomalous amounts of copper and silver minerals; one had traces of gold. Stratabound copper-silver occurrences appear to be prevalent. Quartz veins in the WSA locally contain trace gold, and one mine adjacent to the area produced some gold in the late 1800's. The WSA is underlain principally by Precambrian and early to middle Paleozoic quartzites, argillites, dolomites and limestones that have been complicated by faulting, generally tilted northeastward, and thrust southeastward over sequences of late Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The stratabound copper-silver occurrences and gold-quartz veins are in Precambrian and Cambrian rocks in the western part of the WSA, as are similar deposits regionally. Sand and gravel, and limestone are abundant, but plentiful resources of these commodities are nearer established markets. In November 1983 there were 5 small groups of current claims oh the WSA boundary; none are patented claims. Probably less than 35 claims have been located within the WSA, mostly in the northwestern portion; hut over 100 claims have been located outside, near the northwestern boundary. Oil and gas leases nearly surround the boundary and 6 extend up to 1 mile into the study area. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the WSA. From 3 to 5 miles to the west, several lode nines in the Johnnie district have produced several million dollars worth of gold from quartz veins, and some silver and lead from galena-calcite veins. These veins generally trend northeasterly and dip northwesterly and probably do hot extend into the study area.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the state's 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

Beneficiation of phosphate in the southeastern United States generates a slurry of finely divided clay. These clay-wastes are impounded to allow the particulates to settle. The aggregation of phosphatic clay-slime wastes and slimes produced from potash beneficiation by microbial processes was studied using several bacterial species known to produce polymeric substances. Experiments included flocculation capacity of clay-slimes by whole cells, the determination of respiratory activity of whole culls in the presence of phosphatic clays, observation of clay flocculation rates by polymers derived from these organisms, and clarity of polymer-flocculated clay suspensions. The polymer-producing organisms exhibited little capacity for flocculating phosphate and potash clay-slimes. Fungal spores of Cladosporium cladosporioides (isolated from a phosphate clay-waste impoundment), when agitated with clay-slime for several days, caused the clay to form pellets. Separation of the clay/fungal pellets (density 1.1 g ml-1) from the process water might he possible using a screening technique. Studies with C. cladosporioides included the determination of suitable energy substrates and supplements for growth, absorption studies of a pigment produced by the organism, determination of the time required for bioflocculant production by the organism, and an elucidation of the conditions required for the pelletization of clay-slimes by the fungus.

The Brattice Window Method was used to measure the leakage rates of a total of 42 ventilation stoppings in 8 hardrock mines. Various types of stopping construction were evaluated. The following types are listed in order of decreasing effectiveness: 1) Cinder block, 2) Timber and mortar, 3) Timber and polyurethane foam, and 4) Timber and brattice material. There are slight differences in the effectiveness of the first three types, while the timber and brattice type is substantially inferior to the others. The repeatability of the Brattice Window Method was found to vary with physical conditions in the mine such as stopping location with respect to intersections, regularity of drift cross section, and the presence of hardware such as air and water pipes, timber sets and wire mesh. The Brattice Window Method is viewed primarily as a tool for estimating and comparing stopping leakages for the purpose of determining where repair efforts should be concentrated. A laboratory test program resulted in the derivation of several "rules of thumb" for employing the Brattice Window Method, which will aid in securing accurate and repeatable data.

The occurrence of dust in mines has always been a source of trouble, but for any years, and virtually up to the beginning of the present century, relatively little of a definite nature was known as to the numerous ill effects of dust in mining operations. Even today, with the west amount of time given and attention paid (for at least 40 years in various, countries) to research and observation en dust in mining, and in spite of the experience with it, much information remains to be obtained, before definite, well-authenticated statements can be made as to numerous features connected with the occurrence of dust in Dines an of its effect upon the health and safety of the worker. One statement that can be made with relatively good assurance of being uncontradicted in that dust is a real menace to the well-being of mine workers, and this includes both health and safety. In addition, dust in and around mines and mining plants is one cause of large financial losses to mine owners and operators. FORMATION OF DUST IN COAL MINES IN THE UNITED STATES One definition of mining is "the processes by which useful materials are obtained from the earth's crust; " since virtually all of the useful materials of or in the earth's crust either are solids or must be reached by penetrating through solids, the materials that are moved in mining must necessarily be broken or disrupted, so that almost every phase of the work of loosening the material and transporting it is likely to produce dust.

The ability to recognize visual cues commonly associated with roof and rib hazards is fundamental to the prevention of groundfall accidents. The perceptual skills that miners possess to visually search and assess hazardous ground conditions differ considerably. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes recent investigations on the use of stereoscopic (3-D) slides as a training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize the various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that cause ground-falls. The feasibility of using 3-D slides for training and their effectiveness for representing roof and rib hazard conditions are discussed. Information is presented on equipment and procedures for creating a 3-D slide program that can be updated by mine trainers. Recommendations are made on selection of 3-D equipment and on the use of 3-D slides for training miners to recognize roof and rib hazards.

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. [Boron is an element whose metallurgical possibilities never have been investigated thoroughly, probably because of the difficulties experienced in the preparation of elemental boron and its intermetallic compounds. The southwestern United States contain the world's s largest deposits of boron minerals. In general, the mineral is readily available, and mining costs are not excessive. The most important boron mineral of commerce is borax (sodium tetraborate) however, there are large deposits of colemanite (a mineral having the composition represented by 2CaO 3B2O3 5H2O) in Clark County, Nov. This material was worked in times past by converting it to sodium tetraborate. In recent years the deposits have laid idle because of a mire readily available source of borax in the old lake beds of California.]
