This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

[This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a survey of underground mining equipment and of two demonstration programs showing the feasibility If quieting; a load-haul-dump (LHD) machine and a personnel vehicle. Typical noise levels are presented for the major machine types used in underground mines, along with estimates of the noise overexposure of miners who operate or work near these machines. General principles of noise control are explained, and the application of these principles is illustrated in the description of modifications made to the LHD machine and the personnel vehicle. The noise control package installed On the persona of vehicle lowered its noise level by 14 dBA after 4 months of operation, and inspection of the LHD machine after 2 1/2 years of operation with the modifications showed its noise level 7 dBA lower than that of the unmodified machine. Noise dosimeter measurements indicated that both machines were in compliance with Federal noise regulations for a typical shift.]

This report documents, from concept through field testing, the pan scraper Wheel Slip Monitor. The function of this device is to instantly warn the scraper operator of wheel slip and thus enable him to take immediate corrective action. Knowledgeable pan scraper people recognize that the preponderance of scraper tire damage and wear occurs during useless wheel slip when the scraper operator attempts to increase machine draft beyond what traction will allow. The resultant shortened tire life has become very expensive. The Wheel Slip Monitor reported here provides the means for relieving the scraper operator of attempting to judge wheel slip on tires he cannot see. Direct and intuitively understandable audible and flashing light warnings tell the scraper operator which wheel is slipping and also indicate the relative magnitude of the slip. Beside the Wheel Slip Monitor's patent utility as a real time operator aid, it has unique potential for application to extended term wheel slip history acquisition under field conditions. This information has never been easily available and it promises practical value in pan scraper management.

A complete service system was established for the monitoring of personnel exposure to N02 based upon the use of passive dosimetry. This system is structured such that minimum effort is required of the user: manufacturing, analysis, reporting, and record keeping functions are provided by the service organization. A field evaluation program was carried out in a dieselized mine to assess the performance of two passive dosimeters, the Walden GASBADGE TM dosimeter, and a tubular dosimeter developed at New York University. Side-by-side comparisons were carried out to evaluate dosimeter suitability for monitoring in the field, and to assess relative accuracy characteristics.

This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB) Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders/ trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRE truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation) result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

For electric utilities serving the aluminum smelter industry in the United States, sulfur oxide (SOx) abatement legislation could bring about increases in the costs of generating electricity. This paper documents the method and assumptions used in estimating these increases, and the contains the results of the estimation. 1.2 SMELTER INFORMATION The smelters used in this study were identified by the Bureau of Mines (BOM) and are listed in Table 1.1. Also included in Table 1.1 are the electric utilities that serve these smelters. Compliance costs were estimated for these utilities. Some of the utilities are unique in the way that the information is handled or in the way the utility is operated; these are discussed below. 1.2.1 Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops, Data for Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops were gathered by George Mason University (GMU) students for BON and are included in this study.

Crude shale oil produced by underground retorting of Green River Formation oil shale was hydrogasified over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst at operating temperatures ranging from 800° to 1,300° F, pressures of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 psig, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.02 volumes of oil per volume of catalyst per hour (Vo/Vc/hr). At a temperature of 1,300° F and pressure of 1,500 psig, 94 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas containing 72 volume-percent methane. With two reactors in series at a temperature of 1,170° F in reactor 1 and 1,260° F in reactor 2 and a pressure of 1,500 psig, 97 weight-percent of the liquid feed was converted to gas with a methane content of 75 volume-percent. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was hydrogasified at operating temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,400° F at a pressure of 500 psig over a cobalt-molybdate-on-alumina catalyst. Similar experiments were made with an empty tubular reactor. The data indicate that gasification reactions in the presence of a cobalt-molybdate catalyst change from predominantly a catalytic (carbonium ion) reaction to predominantly a thermal (free radical) reaction at temperatures greater than 1,100° F. The data also indicate that a reaction temperature of 1,350° F is necessary at the space velocities used in this investigation to make a synthetic natural gas (methane content of 90 volume-percent) from in situ crude shale oil.

The Bureau of Mines used a linear cutting apparatus equipped with a 7-inch disk cutter to cut grooves in marble, limestone, granite, and quartzite under a normal force of 7,000 lb. The size distribution of the muck for various grooves was determined through sieve analysis. A statistical search showed that Weibull distribution describes the size distribution better than other available functions. Results indicate that fineness modulus, chip population, and dimension of the largest chip can be used as indicators of cutting efficiency. The results correlate with those obtained from the boring machines and other lab experiments. This Bureau of Mines publication estimates that U.S. helium resources as of January 1977 were 710 billion cubic feet. These resources are broken down into four classifications, as follows: Helium in measured natural gas resources and in storage, 201 billion cubic feet; helium in indicated natural gas resources, 150 billion cubic feet; helium in hypothetical natural gas resources, 175 billion cubic feet; and helium in speculative natural gas resources, 184 billion cubic feet.2 Most of the helium in natural gas is presently dissipated as natural gas is consumed as fuel and for other purposes. Helium resources of the United States may also be divided into three other categories: (1) Depleting and undiscovered natural gas resources, 589 billion cubic feet; (2) nondepleting natural gas, 83 billion cubic feet; and (3) storage, 38 billion cubic feet, of which 37 billion cubic feet is federally owned and 1 billion cubic feet is privately owned. The United States does not have any significant leasehold rights in the depleting fuel gas resources. However, through the Department of the Interior, it does have leasehold rights to about 70 percent of the helium found in nondepleting natural gas, and it owns over 90 percent of the helium in storage.

MFIRE, written in Fortran 77, is a computer program for ventilation state simulation in the steady state or transient state condition. It can be applied for the calculation of normal ventilation system planning or the analysis of the dynamic state variation in a ventilation system under thermal or mechanical disturbance. The state simulator MFIRE is a useful tool for mine fire fighting. In the case of a mine fire, mine ventilation engineers want to get some help to obtain more information, such as what is happening in the underground mine and how to control the mine fire, for correct decision making. By use of program MF'IRE, forecasts can be made on the variation of airflow, temperature, and contaminant distribution in a ventilation system during a mine fire. The paths which the contaminant takes at each time interval can be traced. The program MFIRE can be of assistance in the preplanning of escape routes. It can also be helpful during a mine fire emergency and mine recovery operation. Besides of offering the information of state simulation during a mine fire, MFIRE can be applied for state control by pretesting the suitability of the selected state control measures. It is to simulate the effects of the state control measures on the airflow distribution of a dynamic ventilation system. The testing result can be used for fire fighting in a similar real case of a mine fire. By employing empirical methods or a qualitative analysis like Budryk approach, ventilation engineers can choose different combinations of locations and sizes of control devices as samples of state control for an underground mine fire. Program MFIRE can simulate the different combination samples, that consist of a certain mine fue, the corresponding different control measures, and obtain the control effects. After the different control results are compared, the state control measure, which creates the best effect among the different state control measures, will be chosen for that fire case. When a mine fire, which is similar to one of the pretested cases, breaks out, the corresponding choice of the state control measure is applied to the ventilation system. It means that the simulator MFIRE has the function of indirect state control [10]. To achieve the above two functions, state simulation and state control, the mine ventilation system condition, sometimes, should be changed in a wide range to meet the requirement of the fire fighting. These wide system condition changes, such as adding operating fans, stopping or reversing fans, changing fan characteristics, adding regulators and making airflow shortcuts are represented in the time table of the input data set When the data files are changed in a wide range, however, an iteration divergence and some other computing errors in the distribution of airflow, temperature, and contaminant may occur. More serious logical programming and flexible selection on the algorithms are wanted to meet the request of the different data sets, to achieve correct state distribution simulation and improve the iteration convergence. To enhance the reliability and common suitability of program MFIRE, it is necessary to make investigation, analysis, and modification for the formal versions of MFIRE. An investigation was made of pressure pulses produced by unconfined explosive blasts in underground openings. Four tests were made with TNT or modified amatol charges ranging in weight from 60 to 2,000 pounds; each test involved either single or multiple charges. Pressure-time profiles were obtained using mechanical self-recording pressure gages. The cube-root scaling law for peak pressure was found to be valid within about 1 tunnel diameter; at greater distances, the pressures obtained along direct paths were generally higher than this scaling law would indicate.

A new automated post-disaster signaling system, intended to use through-the-earth EM propagation, was demonstrated in the laboratory at an input SNR of -34 dB. The system presently available requires an input SNR of +6 dB, and uses a human-ear detector. The work here demonstrated coherent integration, for the automated system, in multiples of 17 s, up to 1088 s (18 minutes). A repeating pseudorandom (or pseudonoise) signal is used, which offers an ideal auto-correlation at the receiver matched-filter output. A novel decision-variable algorithm achieves the estimate of noise level by using those matched-filter output samples that occur between the signal auto-correlation peaks. This work included corraboration that the received signal power decreases as distance to the tenth power, for through-the-earth propagation. Thus, the above 40 dB reduction in required input SNR permits an automated system to have a range 2.5 times that of the present system. In addition, an automated system permits the possibility of operating receivers around-the-clock; this would reduce the initial-detection-time from a few hours (present system deployment time) to a few minutes (signal processing time).

This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines concerns different methods of face haulage used with various types of continuous-mining machines, mobile-loading machines, and track-mounted equipment under varying roof and bottom conditions and in coalbeds of varying thicknesses. This report is the ninth in a series on mechanical mining in bituminous coal mines. Reference to the reports previously published is made in appendix III, p. 106. Use of modern mining equipment in bituminous coal mines has resulted in increased productivity at the face. This especially is true where continuous-mining machines are used, and the supervision is good. Previous methods and equipment for moving coal from the face became inadequate and had to be improved to restore balance to the mining systems. Sometimes new equipment was needed to improve the face haulage, and in some instances, a new combination of existing equipment was used. Detailed studies of face haulage methods were made at 13 mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois to compare their effectiveness and to describe fully the conditions under which each method was used.

Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract No. HO395132 to develop and fabricate gas sensors for mining applications. Promising new instruments have been designed, developed, tested and supplied to meet BuMines requirements. These instruments include prototype 1) remote-sensing, diffusion-type CO monitors for mine operation which can be operated in conjunction with a surface computer, 2) control modules for alternate in-mine readout of the remote diffusion type CO monitors, 3) personal CO diffusion-type dosimeters and 4) personal NO diffusion-type dosimeters. In addition, retrofit modifications were made to update and optimize operation of CO and NO2 direct-reading type detectors provided under a previous contract. Studies were conducted to evaluate and demonstrate the availability of stable, portable N02 calibration sources for NO2 instrumentation. The use of selected, commercially available cylinder sources for NO2 instrument calibration were recommended. Additional studies were also conducted to investigate the feasibility of instrumentation for rapidly monitoring CO, NO and NO2 in diesel exhaust.

HELIUM SHIPMENTS in 1964 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 15th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 667.4 million cubic feet,2 about 6 percent more than in 1963. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 784.5 million cubic feet. An additional 3,193.1 million cubic feet, which was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program, was purchased by the Bureau and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 a thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Substantial railway freight rate reductions for tank car shipments of helium went into effect during the year, resulting in a lower delivered price for helium. As the Nation moved ahead in the space age, it became increasingly apparent that helium would continue to play an essential role in research, in technology, in defense, and in industry.

A reasonably clear and broad definition of occupational disease as originated by the Supreme Court of Ohio is: "A disease contracted in the usual and ordinary course of events which from the common experience of humanity is known to be incident to a particular employment." An ailment does not become an occupational disease simply because it is contracted on the employer&apos;s premises. It must be one that is commonly regarded as natural to, inherent in, and concomitant of the work in question. The important distinction between accidental-traumatic injuries and occupational-disease injuries is that accidents occur at specific times, ordinarily are discovered readily, and usually leave no question as to the particular employer it whose development the accident occurred. On the other hand, occupational diseases may develop slowly, unknown to the employer and employee until disability occurs, and the injuries sustained are continuing disabilities over an extended period of time and may be incurred while the employee is working for one of several employers.

Tantalum is a rare element ; estimates indicate that there is less tantalum than gold in the earth's crust . After remaining a laboratory curiosity for many years , it was used to a limited extent and for relatively few years (1903- 1911) for incandescent electric-light -bulb filaments . Another wave of interest in tantalum appeared when its electrolytic-valve action was taken advantage of in charging storage batteries , especially for radio work . Tantalum chargers were eventually displaced by other types of chargers , but for a time they were manufac tured in sufficiently large numbers to create a demand for the metal and to bring about its production on a commercial scale in the United States . As tantalum became available in larger quantities and at substantially lower prices , and as high prices for platinum encouraged the employment of tantalum as a substitute , the metal was put to many new uses . Ferrotantalum was made and sold before the World War , and patents have been taken out for a number of special alloys for industrial purposes , but probably the largest use for the metal to-day is in vacuum tubes .
