Mineralogical studies indicate the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class to react poorly on the flotation stimuli and indications are that these minerals are slow floaters. However, recent studies performed on a number of minerals from this class indicated strong interactions with potassium ethyl xanthate resulting in the formation of dixanthogen (only one of several xanthate species). The poor flotation response is not a result of poor interaction of xanthate with the surface. It is proposed that the oxidation products of sulfides in the process water interact with the PGM surface. To test this, the effect of thiosulfate (an important oxidation product of sulfides) was investigated by employing electrochemical measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. The electrochemical investigations indicate no strong effect of thiosulfate on the interaction of xanthate with the minerals surface as well as the reduction of oxygenthiosulfate is likely not responsible for the poor flotation response of these minerals in industrial plants.

This contribution deals with the mineral processing of Li-silicate greisen-type ores comprising of quartz, topaz and zinnwaldite (lithium-rich mica). The origin of the greisen-type ores processed is the Ore Mountains(Germany) where it is explored as a potential resource for the production of lithium carbonate. The goal is to develop a process chain for the enrichment of zinnwaldite using dry techniques only. As basis for the investigation the process chain, which historically was used to process the greisen focused on cassiterite and wolframite, is taken and modified towards the zinnwaldite. Starting with crushed material with particle sizes smaller than 35 millimeters, investigations on different approaches to grinding to liberate mica from gangue are carried out. Concentrates of zinnwaldite are then produced by magnetic separation of size fractions. To assess the success of grinding, classification and separation, mineral liberation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy are used. The amount of lithium measured in the sample with atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to calculate the content of zinnwaldite based on its known mineral chemistry. Combined with the particle size distributions, product qualities are determined. Altogether, this allows the thorough evaluation of the success of comminution with focus on following steps of concentration. More and more researches and applications of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are carried out in the course of research and application of modern flotation. The paper puts forward the necessary condition of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators by analyzing the chelating chemical performance of organic chelating agents with metal ions and the stability of chelates formed by them; at the same time, puts forward four sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators according to different hydrophilic capability of the chelates and different performance of depression and activation of organic chelating agents for minerals. Namely, the ?1+1/4? necessary and sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are put forward.

"This paper considers the issue of treating argillaceous oxidized ores with low gold grade (around 1.0 g/t). These ores according to their gold recovery level can be treated by heap leaching and agitation cyanide leaching, but low gold grade makes this treatment uneconomic. Heap leaching of argillaceous ores requires high consumption of binding agent for pelletizing to create suitable hydro-physical properties of material, which leads to increasing process cost and makes the material treatment unprofitable. Agitation cyanide leaching of this ore requires grinding processes; these expenses would not be paid back by the amount of gold recovered. Considering the above, poor argillaceous oxidized ores are recommended to be treated according to a combined technology including fractionation of ore, heap leaching of coarse fraction and agitation leaching of argillaceous fraction. Complex approach application allows one to avoid expenses incurred for material grinding and high consumption of binding agent for pelletizing. The success of this technology implementation will firstly depend on the quality of material fractionation, therefore the section of disintegration and division of ore into different components will be the most important part of flowsheet development for gold production. When disintegrating minerals at positive temperatures both standard (mechanical disintegration - scrubbers) and innovative (hydraulic method of disintegration - HydroClean units) equipment is applicable. HydroClean units are characterized by lower energy and water consumption. In a number of cases it is required to treat frozen ores. When treating frozen material standard approaches to disintegration are not reasonable due to their low efficiency. In order to treat frozen material a two stage disintegration flowsheet with screening after each stage is recommended. The first stage is recommended to be performed in a scrubber, the second - in a HydroClean unit. This technological flowsheet will provide high and steady values for ore separation into fractions at low energy consumption for disintegration."

29% of the total ore mined in the Russian Federation for copper production is finely disseminated copper-zinc-pyrite ores of the Ural Region. Physical and chemical characteristics of pyrite copper-zinc ores make for difficulties in obtaining high indices during processing. At present, the authors have elaborated the technology to improve the quality of copper concentrates up to 20.0% for the ones obtained during pyrite copper-zinc ore processing (based on the example of the ore mining and processing enterprise ?Uchalinsky GOK?, Russian Federation). There are examples of use of fair-sized pneumo-mechanical flotation machines by modernization of processing plants. The comminution technology based on High-Pressure Grinding Rolls presses (HPGR) application is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption and the development of industrial HPGR applications in ore preparation circuits is presently the world trend. However, even though the technology is already in use in many countries, which are the leaders in application of modern mining technology, there is still lack of base investigations over the HPGR performance. Throughput and energetic models of HPGR performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper authors present the method of modeling of HPGR products? particle size distribution with using of suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR performance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product?s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product?s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size particle d appeared the Weibull?s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product?s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure (P), the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the P value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. "Materials being the feed to mineral dressing plants are the mixture of ore minerals having different physicochemical properties among others, especially susceptibility on crumbling. During exploitation of material and their preparation to communition the big number of narrow classes comes into being and they have different properties. The determination of common communition laws of multicomponent (on account of size and mineralogy) materials leads to the estimation of mutual influence of narrow classes and their rates, taking into account their endurance and mineral density, on general ratios and their simultaneous crumbling.If we try to accept the grain membership to the certain component as the differing feature, we can write the balance equation as: ( ) ( ) S= = k i i i g x p f x1where: fi – density functions of one type distribution and of different statistical moments (characterising the homogeneous materials grinding), pi – “stirring” proportions of each components, S== k i i p 1 1 . From the point of verification view of detailed versions of this equation the inverse operation should be done: in the base of the components’ mixture grinding results and the results of components grinding the legitimacy of equation should be checked.The using of finished distribution mixtures’ theories to the grinding process analysis allows, first of all, to verify the assumption of grinding independence of individual feed components. Talking more generally it would lead to the comparison of grain size distributions, obtained by individual components grinding from the defined in the mixture distributions theory calculations. At the rougher flotation circuit of the Miduk copper concentration plant (Kerman, Iran) five column cells (CISA) with the diameter of 4m and height of 12m using static mixer type (MicrocelTM) spargers have been installed. Based on the initial design, columns should accept a feed rate of 625 t/h with 80% passing size of 90 µm and solids concentration of 28% and produce 88% of the plant concentrate (i.e., 22 t/h) containing 32% copper. Due to mechanical and processing problems this objective was never realized and theses columns were remained out of operation from the commissioning time (2005). A new attempt with the aim of returning these cells into operation started in 2013. The results of an extensive study indicated that spargers plugging due to the entrance of small amount (2 kg) of coarse particles (up to 2.5 cm) because of usual problems at the plant environment was the main reason of columns non functionality. With a change in the recycle pump inlet design to the column, which prevented the entrance of coarse particles to the spargers, the operation of the column significantly improved. It was found that in order to have a stable operation of the columns at the rougher stage the feed rate for each column should be reduced from 125 (design) to 70 t/h. The air superficial rate had to be also reduced from 1.9 (design) to 0.6 cm/s. A period of 10 days of continuous operation showed that the carrying capacity was 0.23 (g/min/cm2) which was significantly lower that of the design value (i.e., 0.58). The gas hold up was found to be lower than 10% beyond which columns started to move to the turbulent state indicated by "boiling" froth. The average life time of spargers was determined to be 20 days which considered to be very short. The average recovery and concentrate grade of these columns were found to be 68% and 32%, respectively. The high wear rates of spargers, unusually high level of maintenance and supervision needed and instability of the operation made the plant managers not to use column cells as the roughers.

Goethite ore are the third most abundant source of iron. The overwhelming part of these ore is represented by low-grade varieties which cannot be used in iron and steel industry without preliminary beneficiation. Biomass is a renewable solid fuel, which is feasible for the substitution of coke and coal in the manufacturing due to its lower contents of harmful elements and abundant raw material sources. Utilization of biomass in iron ore sintering process as heating agent and reducing agent contributes to energy conservation and emission reduction. The biomass was mixed together with goethite ore for roasting process to investigate the effects of reduction roasting. The results show that the goethite ore is dramatically reduced and magnetized into maghemite by biomass with the biomass dosage less than 20% and the roasting temperature below 650 oC. When the goethite ore roasted with biomass, the magnetization values could be enhanced more than two orders of magnitude, meets the standard of magnetic separation, which could significantly reduce the iron beneficiation cost. Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

Anglo American Platinum practices fine grinding in its processing plants to enhance the liberation of valuable minerals. If the fine particles of valuable minerals generated during fine grinding are not recovered during the flotation process, this could significantly contribute to the overall losses. This study examines the flotability of fine moncheite (PGE mineral) particles in a controlled environment (moncheite size distribution, concentration and liberation). A barren Norite ore ground to 40% and 80% passing 53µm was spiked, with four different size fractions of moncheite (-5, -10+5, -25+10 and -53+25µm) in order to evaluate the effect of particle size on flotation. The investigation also included the effect of energy input and collector dosage on the flotation of two moncheite size fractions, namely -5µm and -10+5µm. The results showed that the moncheite particle size has a significant impact on flotation. Coarse particles (-53+25µm) showed the highest Pt flotation kinetics and overall recoveries. The -5µm size fraction of moncheite could also be recovered by flotation, however, at a lower rate compared to the other size classes investigated. The increased collector dosage of 300g/t at the finer Norite grind of 80% passing 53µm enhanced the flotation rate of the -5µm size fraction of moncheite when compared to the lower collector dosage of 150g/t. The higher energy input during laboratory flotation, at an impeller speed of 1000rpm also increased the flotation rate of the -5µm size range, however, at a lower concentrate grade, when compared to the lower impeller speed of 700rpm. More favourable Pt flotation kinetics data was obtained for the -53 +25µm size fraction of moncheite at the fine Norite grind when compared to the coarse Norite grind. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

"The aim of the research is to develop a holistic process flow for the recycling of glass fibres from glass reinforced plastics (GRP) and carbon fibres from carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), wherein the dissolution of the fibre epoxy resin matrix, separation of fibre fractions and their renewed material use is intended. In clear distinction to the previous research and development projects, the aim here is to recycle complex composite structures such as dismantled/disused wind turbine rotor blades and end-of-life composite wastes. In the course of the study, mechanical, hydrothermal and thermal processes and their combined procedures will be developed. As the fibre length is a decisive quality criterion in the recycling of composite materials, the further focus of the study will be the development of upstream and downstream material processing, in which the fibres are retained in their original form. The evaluation of the recycled fibres obtained is based on the elemental composition, measurement and morphological evaluation of individual filaments by scanning electron microscope (SEM), micro tensile tests on single fibres and their comparison to virgin fibres. The resulting process water is analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and a potential recirculation is determined. In cooperation with companies from the composite processing industry as well as recycling companies, a return of the recycled fibres to the known manufacturing process will be examined and an energetic and economic evaluation of the overall process will be carried out. Ambitious aim of the study is to achieve an actual recycling instead of the present downcycling or the energetic utilization. INTRODUCTION As global warming increases, so does the awareness of consumption and production of energy. To counteract the effects of global warming, renewable energy has been increasingly used during the last two decades, not only in Germany, but worldwide. Both, hydropower and wind energy, hereby play a fundamental role. After the end of their useful life of 20 to 30 years, the wind turbines (WTs) are being dismantled. Due to their foundations and tower segments, their recycling rate hereby exceeds 90% by mass. So far, the resulting rotor blade waste played a minor role accounting for only 2 - 3 weight-% of the total plant. Rotor blades of modern wind turbines are made of glass and carbon fibers, which are embedded in an epoxy or polyester resin matrix, balsa wood, PU or PET foams as fillers as well as various paints and coatings. These wastes currently end up in waste incineration or are sold to non-European countries."

"In this paper, we present the study’s results of electrical separation processes on the basis of new separator designs, new technological solutions, and newly discovered effects. We considered the options of enrichment by magnet separation of magnetite and titanomagnetite ores, ores and products containing chromium and manganese, ores of non-ferrous and precious metals. During pneumo-electric separation of mixed iron ore of SMPC, 43.3% of the output of the concentrate with an iron content of 61.7% was obtained in one step, with extraction of 70.5%. The paper also presents the results of the finalization on the air-electric separator of the magnetic fraction when separating oxidized ores of MPPOO (mining and processing plant of oxidized ores) on the Jans polygrade magnetic separator. A concentrate was obtained with an iron content of 65.1% with the extraction of 95.0% and tails with an iron content of 13.0%. The possibility of obtaining low-silica concentrates from these ores with an iron content of 67.15 and a quartz of 2.88% is shown. Also, the results of tests on the enrichment of chromite ores on the firing-magnetic scheme with corona-electrostatic separation are considered. On the initial ore of the Don MPP (mining and processing plant), a concentrate with a content of 61.8% Cr2O3 was obtained with a quartz content of ~ 1.0%. The results of pneumo-electric separation with triboelectric charge of the separated particles are presented. The results of the tests indicate a principal possibility of enriching chromite ores without costly high-temperature roasting. Dry technology of enrichment of manganese ores with the use of electrical separation increases the quality of the oxidized concentrate to the first grade and raises the total extraction by 2 times. For the Chineya deposit of titanomagnetite ores with copper impurities, electroseparation operations were carried out on two samples with a Cu content of 1.93 and 3.75%, respectively. For a sample with a Cu content of 6.02%, a copper concentrate output of 24.42% was obtained with a Cu content of 23.82% and the extraction of 94.88%. The results of enrichment by electroseparation of gold-containing sulfide ores can have the practical importance. For ores of the Berezovskoye deposit, a pyritic concentrate containing 100 g / t of gold was obtained after two or three operations of IES (integrated energy systems)."

"The present paper contains study results of gold morphology and grain size distribution in flotation concentrates produced from original ore samples from deposits of different genesis. Pre-concentration methods were used with selective dissolution of rock minerals and mineral heavy medium separation to obtain statistically valid data on gold grain size and morphology in concentration products. Special attention is given to study of flash flotation concentrates that is mainly used for coarse gold, underextracted in gravity circuit. Analysis of geometrical optics has allowed to establish that during flash flotation gold grains more than 150 µm can be extracted from 10 to 35%, and in some cases single gold grains above 300 µm. INTRODUCTION Distinctive features of gold that have a significant impact, and in some cases, decisive influence on its recovery into saleable products are mineral shape, grain size and morphology of metal particles, paragenetic associations of gold. Peculiar feature of coarse gold is its easy extraction during grinding from associated mineral components like quartz, sulphide and other and almost complete recovery into gravity concentrates (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Morphology of native gold is so diverse that different gold grains are better extracted using different methods of concentration. Compacted and rounded particles are easily processed using gravity concentration but low cyanidable and hard to process using flotation. On the contrary, lamellar, flake, dendrite and capillary aggregates of high specific surface are easily cyanidable and under definite conditions it has strong floatability (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Flotation of gold-containing sulphide minerals and free gold takes place simultaneously during flotation concentration. In case of low-sulphide ores, native gold takes the basic load, having the high density (15.6 to 18.3 g/cm3, for pure gold – 19.3 g/cm3) it has limited size and morphology for successful flotation. It is known that flake gold and fine-grained gold up to 0.1 mm are easily extracted (Lodeischikov V.V., 1997). Authors of the present paper performed a study of gold granulometry and morphology in flotation concentrates produced from gold-containing ores from two deposits of different types: gold-copper oxidized hematite ores and low-sulphide gold-quartz ores. Ores are different by both host rock composition, mineralogical and petrographic features, gold grade in mineral assemblage and morphology and size of precious metal. Common for both ore types is low-sulphide content and presence of free gold."

Structural impurities in the crystal lattice of rock phosphate of Indian origin is a great challenge for beneficiation and practically possesses remote scope of upgradation to the desired level for industrial utilization. There is a wide occurrence of rock phosphate in different parts of India with different characteristics viz. siliceous, carbonaceous and ferruginous. The structural cationic replacement in the composition of apatite is due to the exchangeable cations present in the external impurities associated with the rock phosphate ore. The Indian rock phosphate ore from Purulia district, West Bengal is characterized as unusual structural composition due to the exchangeable cation in its composition. The elemental distribution of ore exhibits the disproportionate ratio of P2O5 and CaO which is 5.88: 3.31 in reference to the theoretical composition of P2O5: CaO in apatite which is 4.23: 5.55. The substitution by trivalent Al+++ cations within the structure of apatite in place of divalent Ca++ is found upto 18% and substitution of exchangeable cation in place of PO4 and F ion by CO3/SO4 is found upto 0.1% and OH ions upto 0.2% respectively in a lattice of apatite thereby diluting the grade of rock phosphate and restricting its industrial use even after beneficiation. This paper reveals the unusual compositional features of rock phosphate under study and is a guideline to the mineral industries using such rock phosphate. Polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers (CnEm) render quartz hydrophobic while feldspar remains hydrophilic. As a result quartz can be separated from feldspar in small frothless flotation devices such as the Hallimond tube. The separation can be accomplished at room temperature at pH < 7 and C16E33 concentrations between 10-5 and 10-4 M for quartz particles smaller than 0.4 mm. No separation is observed when feldspar ore containing about 60 % of feldspar and 40% of quartz is subjected to flotation in a laboratory flotation machine. The reason for the lack of separation is a low hydrophobicity of quartz in the presence of polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers and high intensity of mixing in the flotation machine. The flotometric tests showed that the contact angle of quartz in monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol solutions is less than about 18 degrees and depends on the structure and concentration of the ether and the pH of the system.

During the last decade the output of mining companies has increased rapidly. The key driver is the increase in demand for raw materials in the developing world, and thus this demand has driven up ore prices. From the time when the Raw material group (year 2000) started to introduced their index, it was set to 100 points. Today, year 2011, the index is over 400, which means that ore prices have quadrupled since then. Mine companies have to go deeper in the mines to access the ore bodies to increase the mine capacity and to be able to respond to the market. By going deeper in the mine, there will be new challenges that have to be considered. One of these challenges is how to handle the mine water that is produced in the mine. The water has to be moved to the surface in order to keep the mine from flooding, and this causes more challenges. One solution is to pump the mine water up to the surface without treatment; however, this causes considerable pump wear and the water will still require treatment on the mine?s surface. Another solution is to treat this water in the mine before pumping it to the surface. Metso Minerals has a system solution to treat the mine water, by separating the solids from the mine water. This system reduces the erosion in the pumps and will save many maintenance hours in the long term. One other option is to use the treated water in a closed circuit and reuse it in the process. This system can be divided into three steps: Firstly, a spiral dewaterer to remove the coarse solid particles. For the next step, lamella thickener is used to remove most of the solids, and lastly tube press to handle the sludge from the underflow lamella thickeners. "Molybdenum is currently the most important by-product of Chile´s copper mining industry. This mineral has gained international relevance over the years, because of its price. At mining deposits in Chile, copper and molybdenum are extracted together and then separated in a concentration process consisting of several flotation steps using sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) as copper depressant. However, there are environmental issues related to the potential emisions of toxic hydrosulfide gas and bad odours, which affects nearby communities and suppose a risk for operators. This problem has led to the need for development of new technologies to eliminate the use of NaHS in the process of selective flotation of Cu and Mo minerals. In this work, results of flotation tests in which lignin derivatives reagents are used to obtain the selective separation of Cu and Mo minerals by flotation are presented. In this technology molybdenite is depressed by the action of lignin derivatives (lignosulfonates), while copper sulfides remain hydrophobic and float. The use of lignin derivatives in the selective flotation of copper molybdenum minerals represents a non-toxic alternative to NaHS.INTRODUCTIONSeparation of copper sulfides from molybdenite is commonly achieved through a two-stage flotation process. In the first stage the collective flotation of copper sulfides and molybdenite is promoted to generate a collective concentrate which is then treated in a second stage with sodium hydrosulfide (2.5-3.0 kg/t NaSH) to depress copper sulfides flotation without affecting the flotation of molybdenite. As a result a copper concentrate with 30-35% Cu, and a molybdenum concentrate with 50-52% Mo are generated. Although this process is widely used at industrial level, environmental issues related to the risk of H2S generation and bad odors have always been a concern. Thus there is a need in the industry for a more environmentally friendly process to separate copper sulfides and molybdenite."
