The paper is mainly about a study on the techniques of separating iron from pyrite cinder of a certain sulfuric acid plant in Shandong province. The main components of the cinder are Fe2O3 and SiO2, and the degree of liberation of iron mineral and gangue is very high. So the iron concentrate with higher degree of iron and lower grade of silicon and sulfur can be achieved by reverse flotation. The iron grade of the concentrate reaches 63% and the recovery of iron is no less than 63%. And the most important influencing factor of the flotation is the temperature of the pulp. A better guideline can be achieved by magnetic separation. The cinder is magnetizing roasted for 15 minutes with temperature of 800?, and the concentrate with the iron grade 64%, sulfur grade 0.2% and iron recovery 85% can be obtained by two stage magnetic separation. A rotary kiln has been built to deal with the pyrite cinder, and the result of the industrial magnetizing experiment and magnetic separation is satisfying.

Phenyl malonic acid (PMA), a new chelating collector, which contains a phenyl structure and a malonic acid chelating group, has been synthesized and its collecting capabilities to calamine, hematite, quartz and hemimorphite are also studied in laboratory. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the PMA has somewhat flotation ability to calamine, hematite and quartz, while it nearly has no collecting ability to hemimorphite. With the increase of PMA concentration, the flotation recovery of calamine increases. When the dosage of PMA was 560g/t and at pH=7~9, the flotation recovery of calamine gets its maximum of 45.94%. The test results about the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of quartz show that the flotation recovery increases with the increase of pH, and the maximal flotation recovery can be gained in alkaline media. On the other hand, PMA has stronger flotation capability to hematite than to other minerals. The flotation recovery of minerals increases with increase of PMA concentration. When the dosage of PMA is 560g/t and at pH=5~7, the flotation recovery of hematite is 82.96%. Mean-while, the influence of pH on the flotation recovery of hematite was studied and test results showed that, as pH increases, the flotation recovery sharply rises until pH=4, then the increasing rate de-creases outstandingly, at pH=6 the flotation recovery reaches its maximum of 82.96% and it de-creases speedily in alkaline media. Finally, through the measurement of infrared spectroscopy and in terms of solution chemistry of collector, the flotation mechanism has been discussed. It was concluded that the adsorption of PMA on minerals surface is chemical adsorption in nature through two oxygen atoms in the polar group of phenyl malonic acid chelating with the metal ions of minerals surface to form a hexagon-cycle chelate complex: C(=O)-O-M-O-(O=)C.

"Studies of the process of concentration of gold-containing sands and technogenic resources show that the main reason of gold losses is misbalance between size of gold particles and degree of roughness of mineral bed. This results in free circulation of small gold particles in pores with following washing off the particles from the bed by turbulent flows.We elaborated design of magnetic sluice, intended for improving efficiency of recovering fine gold by optimizing magnetic field of a magnetic system on the base of forming catching coat from magnetic mineralsThe magnetic sluice includes trough-shaped body from magnetic-conducting material. On the bottom of the trough, magnets are placed, and opposite poles of the magnets are oriented outwards. Thickness of the bottom is determined to be sufficient for locking magnetic lines of force of the magnets on each other. The magnets of rectangular plate shape are placed on the rough bottom, covering the whole surface or with spare areas; the magnets are placed across the trough with alteration of rows with the same pole orientation.Catching coat is formed of natural magnetic and weak-magnetic placer minerals in field of magnetic system of the sluice. Magnetic minerals, placing along magnetic lines of force, form rough coat of fluffy structure. Size of the magnetic particles is chosen taking into account expected size of gold particles, which are to be fixed on the rough coat or between the magnetic particles. Changing coarseness of particles of mineral bed allows to regulate selectivity of recovering heavy minerals.Forming artificial fleece from magnetic minerals of initial sand, increasing capacity of the bed and relative hydraulic proportionality of mineral particles of the bed provide for the most effective recovery of fine gold."

Melting has become a popular pre-treatment method for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residues in Japan. Although the method is effective in stabilizing the hazardous organic sub-stances such as dioxin, it concentrates the heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in a newly formed fly ash (melting fly ash). Melting fly ash is classified as a hazardous waste because of the leaching potential of these heavy metals in landfill environment. Extraction and recovery of these metals seem to be more environmentally and economically attractive than disposing the material to landfill after immobilization process. This study proposes a Carrier-in-Pulp (CIP) method as a new hydrometallurgical route to reject and recover heavy metals from fly ash. In this method, a carrier material which recovers the extracted metals is added simultaneously with fly ash to leaching solutions and is harvested from the pulp by physical separation method like magnetic separation or sieving. To demonstrate the effect of CIP method, shaking flask experiments were conducted under various conditions using NaCl solution as lixiviant and iron powder or granular activated carbon as carrier materials. In the CIP method using iron powder, more than 97 wt% of Pb and Zn were extracted from the ash to the solution phase. However, the iron powder which was harvested from the pulp by magnetic separation, recovered only Pb (more than 94%) through cementation, leaving behind Zn ions in the solution phase. Due to this problem, granular activated carbon (GAC) was considered as an alternative carrier material. Single- and multi-metal adsorption experiments using granular activated carbon were conducted as a preliminary study. Around 85% Pb and 88% Zn were recovered by GAC in the single-metal adsorption experiment, while 60% Pb and 70% Zn in the multi-metal experiment. These results showed that activated carbon was superior to the iron powder since it was able to recover both Pb and Zn through adsorption. The leaching test conducted on the residue after the CIP-Fe treatment revealed that the solubilisation of Pb was successfully suppressed to meet landfilling guidelines.

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. This investigation aimed at reducing surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene, thereby improving ultimate valuable mineral recovery and selectivity. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion.The addition of diethylenetriamine (DETA) reduces the copper concentration on both minerals, predominantly on the pyroxene surfaces and polyphosphate further enhances the selectivity at pH 6.The microflotation and batch flotation data obtained has shown a significant improvement in the ultimate flotation response of valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade compared to the standard reagent regime, while the continuous flotation results significantly improved the selectivity, however, at a similar ultimate recovery."

"In Russia, 1.1 million tons of mercury-containing waste are stored. The amount of mercury in soils and heaps of industrial enterprises is estimated at 3000 tons; in dumps, concentration tailings, sludge dumps of the gold mining industry up to 6000 tons have been accumulated. Mining is one of the main sources of mercury emissions in the natural environment that poses a real threat to the natural environment. At present, the process of amalgamation is prohibited and not applied in gold extraction. The application of amalgam technology in gold mining led to the accumulation of highly toxic products in the form of gold-bearing amalgam and metallic mercury, with a mercury content of dozens and even hundreds of times greater than the maximum permissible concentration for soil (1). Therefore, mercury-containing tailings constitute an ecological hazard to the environment. According to published data, at waste storage sites of industrial enterprises, up to 50 tons of mercury enter soil annually, and up to 3.5 tons pollute the air. At the same time, mercury-containing waste due to the reduction of the country's mineral resources is an additional source of mercury. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle mercury-containing waste. INTRODUCTION Paperobjective: demercurization of technogenic raw materials (amalgamation tails, discharge outlets of tailing dumps) to be recycled. Under natural conditions, the mercury usually migrates in the form of three most common compounds: elementary mercury (Hg); mercuric mercury ion (Hg+2); methylmercuryion (Hg (CH3) +. Chemical compounds Hg (II) are found in natural conditions much more often than Hg (I).The authors propose to conduct demercurization of technogenic raw materials (mercurial tailings) in two stages. At the first stage, the mercury in the form of small balls, the finest particles (drip mercury) can be extracted by applying the gravitational method. We propose a method for centrifugal processing of crushed waste in the apparatus of Itomak company, Novosibirsk, as the basis of the technological process for mercury recycling. The extraction of metallic mercury out of mercury-containing waste into commercial products, according to the technological characteristics of the Itomak apparatus, reaches 86.0% (2, 3). At the second stage, the extraction of mercury out of technogenic raw materials is performed applying a sorption method and using carbon sorbents based on fossil coals. Hard coal of the Kuznetsk Basin has been already used for industrial production of active carbons (carbon sorbents) of the KAD-iodine type, which is one of the prerequisites that determine the choice to use it for the aims of this study."

"Dynamic air classifiers separate particles in a gas flow due to different particle trajectories utilizing differences in the settling velocity of particles as characteristic property for separation. The present contribution takes a close look at the separation of heterogeneous mixtures, in which valuables and gangue minerals show significant differences in density. The focus was on a moist iron ore sample, which was characterized in terms of mineralogy, grain size distribution, and particle size distribution. The material was classified at a cut size of 45 µm and at feed moistures between 0 and 6 wt.-%. Additionally to standard characterization techniques, the moisture of both products was measured as well as the yield of fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. In addition, an automated mineral liberation analysis (MLA) provided information of the enrichment and segregation of individual mineral phases in the products. The MLA of the classification products reveals a selective comminution of the mineral phases and especially on overmilling of the valuables. For the first time, the separation of individual mineral phases has been assessed and compared to the classic assessment of classification processes by means of particle size analyses. Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. In mineral processing plants it is important to estimate rock composition, size and grindability to improve control of the grinding process. It is well known that variation in ore grindability and size distribution directly affects mills power consumption and throughput. This paper extends a general machine vision approach for on-line estimation of rock mixture composition using color information. Our proposed rock lithological recognition method requires the following steps: division of each image into sub-images, color feature extraction using the Binary Quaternion-Moment-Preserving thresholding technique (BQMP) and support vector machines (SVM) for classification. The BQMP thresholding technique splits the image in two and chooses representatives of each half using the histogram as features. The statistical parameters of the color data can be expressed using the quaternion moments into the representatives. This method can be recursively applied to the sub-images, obtaining 5x2n features in n iterations. Once the feature vector has been computed, each vector is assigned to one of three classes using a classifier. The method was tested on a database containing 20480 sub-images (64x43 pixels) of five ore types as follows: massive sulphide (MS), disseminated sulphide (DS), net textured (NT), gabbro (G), and peridotite (P). These ore types were assigned to three grindability classes: soft (MS), medium (DS and NT) and hard (G and P). The database was divided in 2 subsets: 15360 sub-images used for training and cross validation and 5120 sub-images used for test. The classification accuracy was compared with a method previously published based on a mixture of principal components analysis (PCA) for color, and wavelet texture analysis (WTA) for texture feature extraction. WTA-PCA approach reached a 76% accuracy in test while our BQMP method reached 90% of classification accuracy using only color features. Experimental results show that our proposed method yields excellent results compared to previously published results. We studied the feasibility of automated mineralogy to discriminate between tennantite and enargite, the main sulfosalts found in the Rio Blanco deposit, Codelco-Chile, in order to predict the content of minor elements (As, Sb, Ag, Pb, Zn) that impact on the process and concentrate prices. The identification of these minerals is feasible using traditional microscopy, however not possible by automated mineralogy. This drawback prevents comparing the databases generated in the past by means of conventional microscopy with the information obtained at present by QEMSCAN. To differentiate enargite from tennantite the mineral composition of both sulfosalts was studied by electron microprobe. The presence of associated minor element contents of about 8% zinc in tennantites and not exceeding 0.07% in enargites were used to modify the SIP database of QEMSCAN to enable the quantification of these phases in samples of head, residue and concentrate coming from As-bearing domains of the deposits. Detection limits allowed to determine the mineral species in the head, concentrate and residues. The integration of methodologies such as automated mineralogy and microprobe can be used successfully to quantify the presence of some ore forming solid solution.

"Beneficiation of the epithermal gold mineralizations associated with an extensive alteration zone in the Serrenti-Furtei region on the island of Sardinia, is proving a complex issue. Experimental investigations have in fact demonstrated that while the ores contained in the upper parts of the deposit are amenable to conventional cyanidation, the gold contained in the refractory ores in the lower portions needs to be recovered by means of flotation, combined with leaching where necessary.The results of commercial heap leaching, carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing and flotation, designed on the basis of the experimental findings and applied to the oxidized portions and transition zones of the deep sulphide mineralizations, confirmed the expectations emerging from the laboratory tests."

Flotation work conducted by CSIRO on both single minerals and high-arsenic copper ores from a number of sources, has shown it is possible to produce separate low-arsenic copper concentrates and high-arsenic copper concentrates from high-arsenic copper ores. The procedure involves controlled separations at high or low pulp potential regions exploiting subtle differences in the flotation behavior of the arsenic-bearing and non-arsenic-bearing copper minerals. An overview of several case studies investigating the applicability of the controlled potential flotation approach to the separation of copper and arsenic from sulfide copper ores is presented. It highlights the variables which influence the efficiency of the separation which include mineralogy, liberation and reagent selection. The procedure can produce a saleable low-arsenic copper concentrate, which can be directly smelted without penalty, and a high-arsenic low copper concentrate, which will require further processing. The interest in investigating the processing characteristics of mineral deposits in Norway has seen an upsurge in the last decade. One of the major areas of interest is a huge copper deposit, operated by NUSSIR ASA located in the Repparfjord Tectonic Window in the caledonides of west Finnmark. This study reports analysis of ore from the deposit for development and modifications in the flotation flowsheet for the NUSSIR ASA copper ore. The mineralogical characterization for the ore sample was achived by optical microscopy and Zeiss automated mineralogy while grinding characteristics were tested using Bond Index tests. The results confirmed the presence of Cu minerals in the form of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite in the samples, which are mainly liberated in the – 105 µm size range. The majority of non-liberated copper sulphides associated with silica and the carbonates varies from 3 to 28 percent in the –250 µm samples . It is also observed that the copper minerals are uniformly distributed in all size ranges. Selective flotation of NUSSIR copper ore was performed in different size fractions with a motive to identify the correct liberation size and thus to obtain a copper concentrate meeting the quality requirements. The flotation experiments are essentially performed in two stages: the rougher and the cleaner stage. Mass balance calculations were performed showing that approximately 88 percent of copper can be obtained at the end of the process. Ultimately, overall circuit copper recoveries ranged between 83.5 to 88.1 % with a concentrate grade of 35 to 48 % Cu.

"Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as operating mines move into areas of more complex ores. The processing therefore needs better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores for better planning before issues arise. While a number of instrumental mineral characterisation methods are available, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is widely recognised as perhaps the best technique for the identification and quantification of minerals, particularly clays. When an appropriate sequential and systematic sample preparation and treatment protocol is employed with instrumental XRD analysis individual clays can be uniquely identified, and the proportions of interstratified clays can also be quantified. The effect of sample preparation on the XRD analysis and identification of clays was investigated in this study. The results showed that sample preparation protocol is indeed critical to accurately analysis and characterisation of clays. For example, both dry grinding and micronizing affected the degree of crystallinity of kaolinite leading to the formation of reactive surfaces or changes in the physicochemical behavior. It was also found that the apparent degree of preferred orientation in platy minerals correlates directly with the amount of force/pressure applied during the preparation of backfilled powder samples. This work showed that manual preparation can produce highly variable peak intensities especially with minerals that show any preferred orientation. KEYWORDS Clay; XRD; kaolinite INTRODUCTION Clays are important in our life and they have numerous applications in modern world from cosmetics to environmental remediation. Therefore, clays have been extensively investigated for many years. Adequate characterisation of clays is becoming increasingly important as the mineral processing industry faces more complex mineralogy with the need for better mineralogical characterisation to identify problematic ores and plan accordingly. In most studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) method has shown the unique capability to characterise mineralogy, especially for the fine grained size materials. The XRD technique is particularly diagnostic for clays. It is known that under ideal conditions, the peak intensities of an XRD diffractogram are proportional to the concentrations of individual minerals present in the sample. Hence, the qualitative mineralogical data obtained from XRD can be quantified, using either the internal or external standard methods. However, it is also known that clays are particularly sensitive to the influences of sample preparation method due to their physical characteristics (e.g. fine grain size, morphology, relative physical softness, crystallinity, thermal sensitivity) that could be destroyed by inappropriate preparation prior to the analysis. Thermal and mechanical treatment and grinding of clays can change their crystalline structure, and consequently, their characterisation results by XRD analysis. The behaviour of clays in grinding has been widely studied, especially for kaolinite (Miller and Oulton, 1970, Milocevic et al., 1992, Tomasevic-Canovic et al., 1992). With prolonged grinding time, the crystallinity of the clays can decrease (Filipovic-Petrovic et al., 2002). It has been shown that grinding may gradually cause the loss of hydroxyl ions of kaolinite (Gonzalez Garcia et al., 1991)."

Alumina demand is steadily climbing around the world and is likely to continue to do so for many years. In such a commodity industry, the question arises as to what effort should be expended on innovation, given that for an individual company, the drivers of change are cost and quality as the market demand is essentially assured. This is of course a long-term view. The current conditions are less attractive. In this presentation, we review the broad issues that are considered targets for collaborative development by the industry as recently updated in the alumina industry roadmap published by the International Aluminium Institute in 2010. While they cover areas such as ?mine rehabilitation, residue management and use, alumina production from high sulfur bauxite, bauxite beneficiation, energy efficiency and alternative technologies for alkali and alumina recovery from bauxite residues,? it must be remembered that each refinery is different in terms of the feed material and the circumstances of waste disposal. Of particular interest is the more competitive area of breakthrough technologies. In the presentation, we will consider a range of opportunities that could transform the industry, from relatively near term possibilities such as bauxite activation through possibilities to eliminate crystallization as currently practiced to complete alternatives, such as the use of hyperaccumulating plants. Against this optimism, some of the realities that hold back breakthrough innovation will be presented for discussion.

There are some problems in the beneficiation of fine-grained oxidized iron mineral such as high cost, severe sliming, poor results and low recovery due to the fine disseminated size of the mineral. Taking several representative types of finely-disseminated oxidized iron minerals as examples, the author analyzed the main difficulties in the beneficiation of such kind of ores and discussed the existing problems in grinding-classification, technological process, flotation reagents and separation equipments and the resolvents of these problems.

Froth flotation is an industrial process commonly used for the separation of mineral particles. Bubbles sparged in a pulp collect and carry hydrophobic particles to the top layer of a flotation cell, the froth zone. There is a strong correlation between the stability of the froth phase and the flux of solids. However, flotation units placed in series operate, as a whole, in a non-steady state regime with the concentration of particle decreasing from one cell to the next resulting in a decrease in froth stability, which can compromise the recovery of valuables. Organic chemical reagents, frothers, are generally added to prevent fine bubbles from coalescing and to increase the stability of the froth phase. Frothers represent the second largest group of mining chemicals. It is crucial to understand the resulting properties of the frother on the froth phase in order to select the most suitable reagent for a particular operation. The bubble coalescence dynamic of three different surfactants, 1-pentanol, poly (propylene glycol), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether, were investigated in this study. In the first stage, the stabilisation mechanism of bubbles in a solution of surfactant was investigated using a specifically designed experimental setup. The coalescence behaviour of bubble pairs was recorded using high-speed video imaging in which information such as the coalescence time and the deformation of the resultant bubble upon coalescence could be extracted. The results were then compared between the different surfactants for several concentrations. It is shown in a study that the coalescence time increases with surfactant concentration until the Gibbs-Marangoni effect is suppressed by bulk diffusion. Conversely, the oscillation of the resultant bubble was found to be affected only at concentrations at which the film is saturated. The implications of the effects of surfactant type and concentration on the coalescence time and bubble oscillation in froth flotation are discussed. The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

There are discussed the possibilities of using of flotation tailings of platinum-copper-nickel sulfide ores of the Norilsk region for the preparation of backfill mixture instead of a specially produced rock and binder materials to reduce the cost of stowing operations and impact on the environment. It is shown that due to the presence in the tailings of flotation up to 10% of sulfide sulphur, which reduces the strength of the fill materials, and more than 1 g/t PGM it is necessary the preliminary extraction of the sulfides in the product for further processing that give an opportunity to reduce the losses of valuable components. It is shown that by the flotation of the current tailings it is possible to extract 91% of sulfide sulphur, 60% of palladium and 30% platinum in 17% sulfide concentrate containing 2.1 g/t palladium, and to reduce the sulphur content in the tailings up to 0.7%. Due to the easy oxidation of pyrrhotite, there is recommended fractional delivery of the collector with a total consumption 200 g/t. There are discussed results of the flotation study with an additional collector of PGM (sodium diizobutyditiophosfinate), which one show the possibility to increase extraction of platinum on 45%, as well as extraction of sulphur and palladium. For the flotation of sulfides and PGM from the current tailings there is recommended a combination of collectors for primary flotation and only butyl xanthate using in control operations. The possibility of using sludge fraction of the current tailings as a component for the preparation of the combined cementing materials after exposure of sulfides is analyzed. It is shown that the efficiency of the flotation of sulfides from this fraction can be enhanced using selective flocculants. There are discussed the advantages of implementation of completely hydrophobic butadiene-styrene copolymer in comparison with partially hydrophobic polymers. There is discussed an efficiency of the mechanochemical treatment of old tailings in turbo mill and sulphuric acid to remove oxide films from the surface of pyrrhotite before its flotation. Due to the pretreatment operation there is achieved increasing of sulphur extraction and after the introduction to the flotation circuit three control operations there is produced the fill material with sulphur content 2.5%. "Steam Pressure Filtration (SPF) is a modified cake filtration process and is characterized by both washing and excellent de-watering of the filter cake. Compared to conventional gas differential pressure filtration, the filter cake is treated with saturated or superheated steam replacing pressurized air. Invented in the early last century, Steam Pressure Filtration has reached technical maturity in the 1990ies for inorganic particle systems, fine chemicals and coal. Especially the de-watering performance for fine particles systems below 50 µm make Steam Pressure Filtration an excellent option for the processing of fine tailings streams, to produce a stable material, which can be described by the methods of solids mechanics instead of paste rheology. The washing, which is due to the condensing steam, is able to reduce the ion load of the solid. This additional effect is able to generate a dry tailings material, which shows a reduced leaching potential of mobile ions, which originally derive from the process water. INTRODUCTION Steam Pressure Filtration is a process concept especially of hyperbaric filtration, which started its market entry in the 1990ies (Bott 1996, Bott 2002). Even though there have been many attempts to apply steam on filters before, the success story began with the combination of hyperbaric filtration and steam application and the technical solution to limit the steam treatment to a defined zone on the filter. This resulted from the scientific findings that steam mainly enhances the de-watering during the mechanical filtration (Gerl 1999). There are no or minor positive effects of steam application to a filtration process during cake filtration and after the steam breakthrough has occurred. Furthermore that time a sufficient control technology to regulate the steam consumption as well as suitable filter cloths became available. There is a growing need for de-watering technology in the mining industry, not only for the concentrate but also for the tailings streams. Several reasons argue against the established solution of damping the tails as suspension or paste into tailings ponds. There are ecological, political, societal and economic reasons, which question the tailings ponds more and more. Due to the increasing costs in the building and monitoring of tailings dams, which contain the tailing ponds, the concept of dry stocking using filtration technology comes into the game (Jansson 2016). Dry stocking converts the tailings stream form the suspension or paste state, into a material, which can be stockpiled. The latter typically is a moist flowable disperse particle system. The conversion involves a de-watering step, in which different types of filter equipment can be used, e.g. filter presses, membrane filter presses, automatic press filters or hyperbaric filters. For coarse products also vacuum filter can be applied. Due to its excellent de-watering performance and the easy scale-up properties Steam Pressure Filtration is further option for dry tailings stacking."
