"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario 's clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario' s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. Shebandowan Mine presents a unique opportunity for the mining industry to demonstrate its willingness and ability to use electrical energy effectively. The mine is a typical 250D-ton/day operation supplied by a i5-MVA power transformer. it is a recent, up-to-date design and operates on a four-day/week, two-shift/day basis. The paper outlines an energy profile based on historical data. It accurately describes the individual and total energy input For: (1) production and non-productive junctions; (2) production and down-time periods; (3) peak and average activity levels; and (4) principal energy utilization equipment. A comparison is then made of production data to electrical data, and production and electrical data to design data. The paper concludes that energy management has an important benefit for the mining industry by assisting in maintaining a competitive operation through reduced costs and fewer production slow-downs in the event of energy shortages.

WC-Co ‘hard metals’ are widely used in a variety of industrial applications due to their resistance to abrasive wear, in addition to their high hardness and toughness. However, in contrast to their mechanical properties, the corrosion response of these materials is relatively poor. In the current work the corrosion mechanisms of two WC-Co cermets are analysed, with 10 and 30 vol. % of the Co metal binder, in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution. The assessment of corrosion involved a variety of electrochemical measurements, including open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarisation and cyclic polarisation, together with systematic analysis of the post-corrosion solution chemistries using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The corrosion potential and current density were determined, following Tafel extrapolation, allowing the calculation of the corrosion rates. It is demonstrated that continuous dissolution of the cobalt phase occurs during corrosion, which is a result of poor cermet passivation behaviour, and this response increases with the amount of binder in the cermet.

"Solids concentration (weight % solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mud-line) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge's Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and a jarosite thickener in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 23 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by a sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles using a model due to Maxwell.The results from conductivity measurements were compared with direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line informnation could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners."

Canada is a very large country with a small population which is growing very slowly. We have great natural resources, but with our limited population we are continually looking afield for new capital to develop these resources. Our mining areas are among the most important fields offering opportunities for new capital and because of the wide-spread appeal which mining makes this industry commands a great deal of attention. While we are glad to see new capital from any source, we welcome it particularly from Great Britain, for, although we offer equal opportunities to the nationals of any country we would be glad to see the development of our natural resources financed as far as possible within the Empire. However, when we invite ne capital we must accept certain responsibilities, and while we have opportunities to offer, we should ask ourselves how these opportunities are taken advantage of and what sort of treatment the foreign investor receives.

Prior to detailing our experiences in the grinding area at Port-Cartier, a general description of the total Sidbec-Normines project is outlined.HI STORYSidbec-Normines was incorporated in 1976 to develop the Fire-Lake - Port-Cartier iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project. The primary objective of Sidbec-Normines is to produce 6mi11 ion tons per year of oxide pellets, of which 3 mi 11 ion tons per year are of a low silica grade suitable for direct reduction purposes. The participants in the project are Sidbec, the Quebec Government steel producer, British Steel Corporation (lnt'l) and the Quebec Cartier Mining Company. "A Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) is a newcomer flotation device whose operation principles similar with Jameson cell but it has an essential change in downcomer. By taking into account the hydrodynamic and fluid mechanic principles (Sahbaz et al. 2013) downcomer was changed as a diffuser, therefore turbulence at the end of the downcomer was reduced to provide better aggregate stability and homogenous dissipation of the bubbles in the separation tank. Thus the performance increase has been aimed for the coarse particles.According to theoretical results, obtained by the formula of Oteyaka (1993) showing the relationship between velocity gradient and maximum floatable size for the various contact angles, the d50 of quartz flotation of JFDC is about 240 µm and 310 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively. This result was verified by the experiments. According to the experimental results; d50 which was accepted the maximum floatable particle size of quartz flotation of JFDC was about 256 µm and 300 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a kinetic process used for separation of hydrophobic particles from hydrophilic particles. There are many different parameters affects the success of the flotation and particle size is one of them. While the flotation is very efficient for intermediate size, the efficiency of the process starts to decrease for both fine and coarse sizes (Trahar, 1981; Muganda et al., 2011). Therefore; researchers have tried to find a solution for the efficiency decrease in fine and coarse sizes by modifying the chemical condition and designing the new devices. For example, Jameson cell is a unique device for the fine particle flotation due to the suitable design and fine bubble producing (Jameson, 1988; Evans et al., 1995; Sahbaz, 2010). Because of this success operation the Jameson cell is applied more than 200 flotation plants in worldwide. On the contrary, the efficiency of the cell decreases for coarse particle flotation due to the turbulence occurred in the separation tank (Sahbaz, 2010; Cowburn et al., 2007). That’s why, new flotation device was designed in loboratory scale by Sahbaz, Oteyaka and Ucar in 2010s and it has been called as Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) recently."

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Methods of extracting copper are evaluated in terms of innovations during the 1970's, and predictions to the end of this century are made. It is concluded that between one and two new smelters and refineries will be needed per year until the turn of the century, and that most of these smelters will be of the oxygen or oxygen-enriched flash furnace type. For converting, the Peirce-Smith converter will still predominate, but the Hoboken converter will play an increasingly important role. Five Japanese pollution control systems are described and it is suggested that much of this technology will be included in future smelting installations. Further growth of hydrometallurgy is predicted, especially for oxide ores, based on improved product metal quality and low plant cost. A n increased level of scrap resmelting is also expected.

"Computer modeling of smelting processes requires internally consistent equations for calculating the compositions of mattes and slags. That is, the sum of the calculated assays must total 100%. "PEC uranium deposit, 100 km southwest of Coppermine, was discovered by diamond drilling in 1976 following ground and airborne geophysical surveys, geological mapping, geochemical surveys and boulder prospecting that were initiated as the result of the discovery of uraniferous sandstone outcrops in 1969 by geologists of Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd.The deposit is within gently northeasterly dipping medium to coarse-grained Unit 11 quartzitic sandstone of Neohelikian Dismal Lakes Group. The deposit is from 10 m to 70 m above the base of the sandstone which, beneath the deposit, non-conformably overlies weathered and altered Aphebian granite of Great Bear Batholith or unconformably overlies rubble breccia, conglomerate and medium-grained Unit 8 sandstone of Paleohelikian Hornby Bay Group.A northeasterly trending, 500 m wide graben, bounded by the steeply dipping northeasterly striking Imperial and Aquitaine faults, contains the deposit which is 1.1 km long by up to 340 m wide. The deposit overlies a post-Hornby Bay Group, pre-Dismal Lakes Group topographic high. Uranium principally occurs as stratabound, often peneconcordant bands; a lesser amount of uranium is fracture controlled.Stratabound uranium exists in gently easterly dipping, subparallel bands ranging in thickness from 1.5 m to 6.0 m. Pitchblende, coffinite and sooty black uranium oxides occur as interstitial disseminations and grain coatings subparallel to bedding; they also replace pyrite and form narrow veinlets.Small amounts of torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklodowskite coat pitchblende and are disseminated within mineralized bands. Pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove/lite, digenite, azurite, malachite, arsenopyrite, glaucodot, niccolite, bravoite (? ), goethite, hematite and magnetite as well as quartz, barite, calcite, biotite, chlorite and clay minerals exist within the mineralized bands. Uranium grades of 0.1 % to 0.3 % U3O8 over thicknesses of 1 m to 2 m are typical.A steeply dipping fracture zone near the Imperial fault contains sooty black uranium oxides, torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklowdowskite as well as sulphides, cobalt arsenides, quartz and carbonate. The zone may reach 70 m long; its true width is about 1.9 m. Uranium grades range up to 5.18% up, over0.9m.Pitchblende and coffinite from PEC deposit have been dated at 1.08 ± .10 Ga with possible remobilization at .45 Ga. The deposit contains an inferred 3,150 tonnes of U3O8."

Dispatch systems have been used for open pit mining since the early 1980?s but similar systems do not widely exist for underground mining. There is a need for developing dispatch systems for underground mines, particularly highly automated operations such as block caving. An innovative method, Agent Based Modeling (ABM) for a dispatch system for a block caving operation, is proposed in this paper. The model is based on a particular behaviour observed in social insects. The focus of the ABM dispatch system is adaptability with respect to changing operational conditions and effective integration of maintenance modules with the operation. The paper will show the advantages of this innovative method compared to existing similar systems. FOR some reason or other, Mine Taxation has never been a popular subject for discussion in meetings of this kind, and it has never received the study and consideration its importance demanded. By way of explanation, two reasons may be suggested. In the first place, the computation, adjustment, and final payment of taxes, have been looked upon in most cases as a Head Office chore. Secondly, since taxes represent an uncontrollable cost item, they have been treated as an added rather than an inclusive factor in calculating unit costs. Perhaps because I am half Irish, and therefore resent taxation of all kinds, perhaps because I am half Scotch, and am therefore concerned with the results, I have always taken a keen interest in this subject. Moreover, by some peculiar set of circumstances, I have been a participating party in many, perhaps I can say most, of the discussions on this subject that have taken place between the Governments and the representatives of this industry during the past thirty years. Looking backward, certain very definite impressions remain. Political considerations have never had any part in these discussions. Views have been exchanged upon the frankest possible basis, and, when we disagreed on some particular detail, we agreed to disagree, and followed through in harmony and? good faith. We, as an industry, have refrained from importuning and fault finding in ways that might be considered as petty or selfish, and it is only upon occasions such as this, where conditions necessitate action, that we lay our troubles before the powers that be. The Ontario Mining Tax Act was drafted by men who were earnest and practical as to purpose, and that Act has stood the test of time. It is, in. truth, a mode! Act, for it has been copied in its general clauses by both Quebec and the Dominion of Canada. We all know that, when a machine is running smoothly, we should leave it alone. The same is true of a well designed, easily applicable, taxation measure, and our present difficulty with respect to this Act arises out of an amendment made in 1916. In that year, you will remember, the Dominion imposed a wartime Income Tax Act. It was described as a wartime necessity and it was intimated t:1 at with the end of hostilities its application would be restricted and finally cancelled. The rate of taxation was modest, and when the Ontario Government was asked that the Dominion Income Tax be allowed as a deductible item, they readily acquiesced. This was looked upon as a temporary arrangement.

"Three institutes of RWTH Aachen University collaborate on laboratory tests and numerical simulations of hydraulically driven fractures in igneous rocks. The project´s target is to enhance the understanding of hydraulic induced fractures for deep geothermal energy exploration. Based on the idea of creating new discrete fractures in hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs, the current project stage deals with this process on a laboratory scale. Especially for this purpose, a new testing facility has been developed and laboratory tests are performed to verify a hydraulic fracture propagation code based on the extended finite element method (XFEM). The testing facility enables us to initiate and propagate fractures in large samples of dense rock under triaxial confining pressures and to monitor the fracture propagation by extensive measurements. This contribution gives a short introduction to the project‘s background and mainly focusses on the test facility, the experimental procedure and exemplary results.INTRODUCTIONThe most efficient technique to increase the permeability of subsurface rock is to initiate and open fractures by applying hydraulic pressure from a packed borehole-section and to inject fluid into these fractures to propagate them. Since its first use in petro industries to enhance the production of wells in natural gas and oil reservoirs, the interest in targeted creation of hydraulic fractures has increased exponentially. As the key technology to the extraction of unconventional gas from shale, hydraulic fracturing (HF) became a major topic in a heated public debate. Based on the fact that a fracture tends to propagate in a direction perpendicular to the minimal principal stress, hydraulic fracturing has become an established tool for estimating geological stress states in almost any depth. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) in HDR reservoirs use engineered fractures as a heat exchanging system for a cycling fluid driving a power plant."

Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is a severe plastic deformation process for achieving ultrafine grains in metallic sheets without changing the sample dimensions. In this study, ARB process was carried out on 5083 aluminum alloy sheets up to 6 cycles. In this process, the surfaces of the strips to be joined are roughened and cleaned and then stacked. After stacking, the specimen is roll-bonded by rolling using a 50% reduction. The rolled specimen is cut into two halves, and the above-mentioned procedure is repeated for several times. Microstructural characterizations were analyzed by transmition electron microscopy (TEM). Tension and Vickers hardness tests were performed on produced sheets for evaluating their mechanical properties. In order to clarify the failure mode, fracture surfaces after tensile tests were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that at the early stages of ARB process, grains were subdivided by deformation induced boundaries. After several ARB cycles, lamellar structure elongated in the rolling direction contains lamellar boundaries was formed. With increasing the strain, mean spacing of lamellar boundaries decreased. Finally, continuous recrystallization resulted in a microstructure covered with small recrystallized grains with an average diameter below 100 nm at the end of four cycle. The tensile strength and hardness of the 6 cycle ARB processed 5083 aluminum alloy sheet increased about two and three times of the initial values, respectively. Results indicated conformity between mechanical evolutions and microstructural changes during ARB process. Fracture surfaces observations showed that failure mode in ARB processed aluminum is shear ductile rupture with elongated small dimples.

Substitution of coal and coke by renewable carbon (charcoal) is a low-risk and low-capital path to 50% or more reduction in net CO2 emissions by the steel industry. However, the high cost of charcoal and its low availability in most countries are barriers for the implementation of this approach. Development of an efficient wood carbonisation technology (slow pyrolysis) capable of producing large-volumes of charcoal from low-cost wood feed (e.g. wood wastes or forest residues) is an essential step towards the use of renewable carbon by the iron and steel industry. This paper provides a summary of the progress made over several years of R&D covering: (1) development and piloting of a new energy efficient slow pyrolysis process for production of charcoal from woody biomass at a competitive cost to the PCI coal, (2) techno-economic evaluation of the process. The main feature of the process is that the material undergoing pyrolysis is heated spontaneously without the supply of heat or air to the reactor. This makes it possible to carbonize large volumes of small-sized wood (e.g. wastes and residues) in a single reactor unit and capture high calorific value pyrolysis by-products
