THE Wright-Hargreaves mine is one of a group of seven mines long active in the Kirkland Lake district, Ontario. Detailed geological reports and maps covering the area have been published by the Ontario Department of Mines (1,3)t. Though all these mines work several productive veins there is one vein which is common to all and is known as the North Vein of the camp?not that it is the most northerly vein mined, but it is the more northerly of the two major veins of the camp. At the Wright-Hargreaves mine there are in all ten important producing veins, and most of them have a N.60°-65°E. strike and in general a steep southerly dip. It is a common belief that most of these veins lie along faults but it will be shown that whilst this is true of some of them it is not true of all, and also that a vein may lie in a fault along part of its course and elsewhere fill a fracture in line with the fault, this being a consequence of rotational movements that took place during faulting. The paper describes the history of faulting at this mine in particular, makes observations on the principal pre-ore fault, and describes the method used in solving the movements on the post-ore faults. Other details of geology are not discussed except to mention here that our main veins lie almost entirely in the syenite porphyry stock except on lower levels close to the east boundary of the property, where the North vein leaves the porphyry to enter the greywacke.

Today, systems and machinery usually are designed to meet only one specific customer?s requirements. One reason for this is that underground automation and smart functions are often developed tightly together with a customer. This is natural, since risk and cost can be shared between the customer and the supplier. Nevertheless, when the automation product develops and the market increase this will cause problems: The highly specialized products will not fulfill the next customer?s demands. In order to cope with this problem, Atlas Copco works towards a common platform. Instead of designing solutions for specific customers, we will lift the abstraction and focus on standardized modules. These modules, or function blocks, can then be combined in a large variety of configurations. The benefits of combining modules into products are, for example: increased flexibility when options are available for many machines; easier commissioning and maintenance since less different spare parts and tools are needed; and easier operation since the user interfaces have a similar look and feel. This paper will present the ongoing work towards standardized modules. We will discuss how our Rig Control System (RCS) allows for modular design at Atlas Copco. RCS has number of standardized modules that are used in different surface and underground mining and tunneling equipment. These modules are also used for optional products such as, drilling, radio-remote control, and telematics systems.

Over the last decades, the wrought aluminum casting industry has made significant progress with regards to process consistency by the introduction of new technologies in the field of liquid metal processing and casting. These technologies, combined with the application of best practices, have led to increases in productivity as well as better process performances and product quality. The competition in the addedvalue aluminum products (by opposition to P1020 production) is, however, very strong and involves players that did not hold a major role five years ago but who are now exerting a strong competitive pressure on our industry even sometimes from far abroad. There are still technical and technological challenges remaining in the different areas of aluminum casting production, amongst which metal pre-treatment, furnace operations, in-line treatment and casting hold a predominant influence. The comprehension of the contribution of each individual process step to the entire process chain is a key element and must be considered in future process optimisations. This paper presents the technological position of the casting industry and tries to highlight areas where further progress can be made.

"IntroductionTHE PROBLEM of producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other raw materials is of increasing importance in Canada as well as in the United States. This is due, to a large extent, to the continually increasing demand for gasoline and other liquid products which are now obtained solely from petroleum. The United States has reached a position where domestic supplies of crude petroleum must be augmented by imports and Canada is still a long way from self-sufficiency. In the event of war, there might well be an immediate need to find supplementary sources of liquid fuels. It is, therefore, expedient to consider alternative sources of production now -well in advance of the time when supplies of petroleum may prove inadequate to meet requirements.The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of the history of liquid fuel production from coal, to describe briefly the research sponsored by the Federal Government on the coal hydrogenation process, and finally to evaluate the present status and future trend of the synthetic fuel industry, with special reference to necessary research work.History of the Oil-From-Coal IndustryThe history -of coal liquefaction began in 1913, in Germany, with the work of Frederick Bergius. lntroduction Some years ago it was general practice in Canadian mines to use the best timber available, just as it was cut from the tree. Later, to prevent 'borers' from getting into the wood while stacked in the yard, the bark was peeled off, cleaned up carefully, and burned to eliminate a breeding ground for these and other destructive insects. This practice of good housekeeping also decreased the hazard from fire in scattered bark. A few years after damage by borers had been minimized, it became apparent that increased temperatures in the mines, occasioned by deepening operations, were being accompanied by rapid growth of fungus and by decay in timber underground, greatly shortening its life. In places on upper levels where the air temperature was below 50 deg. F., untreated timber retained a large proportion of its strength for ten or more years. In other places on these levels, however; its life was short and it developed much dry rot and merulius lacrymans. In these latter places and on lower levels in the mine where temperatures ranged from 50 to 60 deg. F., approximately, the wood became infested with extensive growths of this white fungus. This development was accompanied by the production of millions of spores. Spread of infection was due mainly to the transfer of spores from the warm lower levels to the cool upper horizons by upcasting ventilation currents. So serious did this become that about twenty years ago Lake Shore, Hollinger, and McIntyre Mines decided to investigate the use of wood preservatives and the plant necessary to treat timber.

Shallow-dipping orebodies (45°–60° dip) present significant challenges for underground longhole stoping, particularly due to limited gravity flow, drill misalignment near the footwall, increased potential for dilution from hanging wall overbreak, and deviation from drill string sagging at shallow angles. These geometrical and operational constraints often lead to unblasted ore wedges and excessive overbreak when standard practices are applied. This study develops a structured, data-driven framework to optimize longhole stoping in such conditions by integrating five key focus areas: (1) mining method selection, (2) stope and drift design, (3) drill and blast optimization, (4) equipment selection, and (5) performance evaluation. The suitability of longitudinal longhole stoping was validated for narrow vein geometries using orebody analytics and prior case studies. Geometric modeling was employed to determine optimal stope height (15–20 m) and stope width (1.5–2.5 m), with drift widths adjusted based on orebody dip to maintain drill access and minimize unbroken ore. Drill and blast design emphasized sequential blasting over multi-ring methods to improve void control, reduce wall damage, and enhance fragmentation. Specific burden and spacing guidelines (e.g., 1.8–2.3 m burden; 2.5–3.0 m spacing) were applied based on stope width and dip angle, and patterns were selected based on geometry—dice-5 for narrow stopes, and 3-hole rows for wider stopes. Drill rigs—including top hammer and ITH models from Sandvik, Epiroc, Boart Longyear and CMAC-Thyssen—were evaluated for compatibility with drift dimensions and alignment accuracy. Equipment was matched based on dip, drift width, and the ability to access the footwall at shallow angles. Sensitivity analysis quantified how changes in geometry, drilling accuracy, and blast design affect ore recovery, dilution, and operating cash flow. Results show that tailored drift and stope geometries, combined with proper blasting and rig selection, can boost ore recovery to over 95% and reduce dilution to below 5% in optimal conditions. This methodology offers a practical and economically optimized solution for shallow-dip mining scenarios.

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

"Sensor based sorting faces two main challenges related to limited capacity/throughput and the ability of sensors to accurately discriminate based on estimated grades. This paper is aimed at improving sensor discrimination. Sensors have the ability to measure more than a single response. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) can detect and provide concentration information about a range of elements. Similarly, electromagnetic sensors (EMs) can generate magnetic susceptibility and conductivity responses over a range of frequency levels. The sensors thereby provide a response signature rather than a simply a single response that is a proxy for a metal grade. Furthermore, integrating sensor responses can improve the discrimination of metal bearing rock from waste. A study was conducted on a gold ore to assess sortability using XRF and EM sensors. A multi-variable regression approach was used to develop models that included a range of responses. Correlations improved significantly when compared to single response correlations. The approach showed that both positive and negative correlations contributed to the improved correlations. Stepwise regression simplified the models and showed that 2nd order interaction effects can be important. The approach also showed that combining different responses can improve discrimination accuracy. An important outcome of the study was that an ore that had been consider not to be sortable was determined to be sortable through the application of an approach that used the sensor responses in a more intelligent manner.INTRODUCTIONMining is aimed at recovering valuable minerals from their host rocks. Many methods are used to recover valuable minerals, and finding efficient and cost-effective ways is the key in research and production. . Ore sorting technology is fitting this definition. It not only discards waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recovers metal bearing ore particles that could be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include increased energy efficiency and reduced water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013)."

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) has three smelters that use the Alcoa P155 technology: two in Canada (Grande-Baie and Laterrière, Saguenay, QC) and one in the United States (Sebree, Kentucky). The oldest RTA P155 smelter was built in the 1970s (Sebree) and had an initial current intensity of 155 kA. In the 1990s, RTA installed an amperage booster in Grande-Baie smelter to increase cell productivity. Since then, RTA has continuously pushed the limit of this technology and the target amperage that was 195 kA in 2005 has been increased to 210 kA in 2010.This article describes the successful plant-scale trials to increase current intensity from 195 kA to 210 kA, and the key performance indicator results. It demonstrates RTA's technology leadership to undertake such a development with its Brownfield smelters.

"The fourth concentrate production plant includes the comminution systems and the medium-low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Based on different conditions, two types of materials are fed into the plant. Type A: 70% of mine ore and 30% of reject materials from magnetite plant and type B: 100% of mine ore. The goal of the present study was to increase the iron grade and the blain number with low sulfur content in final concentrate as the pellet feed. An appropriate pellet feed should have more than 67% of iron, less than 0.1% of sulfur and a Blain number of more than 1800 cm2/g. The Fe, S and Blain no. amounts for the present concentrate are 66.6%, 0.95%, and 500 cm2/g (feed type:A) and 67.8%, 2.3%, and 450 cm2/g (feed type: B), respectively. In this research, the plant improvement efficiency was evaluated by changing the feed particle size distribution and using the flotation system. Laboratory experiments were designed based on the three circuits:1) LIMS (Low Intensity Grinding Rolls) feed grinding-LIMS test-flotation test2) LIMS feed grinding-flotation test-LIMS test3) LIMS concentrate grinding-flotation testThe best results were obtained using the first circuit at the LIMS feed size (d80) of 132 ?m. The processing results using the circuit no. 1 (feed type: A), showed a LIMS concentrate with 69.8% of Fe and 0.36% of sulfur. In this case, the final concentrate (after flotation) with Fe grade of 70.3%, sulfur content of 0.07% and Blain no. of 1571 cm2/g were obtained. In case of the feed type of B, the LIMS concentrate with Fe grade of 68.7%, and sulfur grade of 1.6% was achieved. Also, the Fe and sulfur contents were 69.3%, and 0.4% respectively with a Blain number of 1112 cm2/g. According to the obtained results, it was suggested that a LIMS feed comminution along with a LIMS and flotation systems are necessary to achieve an appropriate iron and sulfur grades with an acceptable blain number. To reach a concentrate Blain number as a pelletizing feed, a High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) system at the end of the processing line was recommended."

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

"""The theory of buckling of shafts and Steel tunnel-linings"" was published by E. Amstutz in 1970 and commented on by S. Jacobsen in 1974. The authors have revised and enhanced Amstutz’s work to address Jacobsen's comments on its limitations and to extend its validity over a wider range of pipe/shaft geometries, including those commonly found in deep mine access shafts. The author has looked at Amstutz’s assessment of strengthening with flexible shear anchorages and adapted the theory of non-linear shear deformation response of bolts to develop a method of assessing increased buckling capacity utilising the full plastic shear capacity of studs. INTRODUCTION “Amstutz Buckling” refers to the buckling of pipe embedded in concrete under external uniform pressure. In terms of a mining environment, this relates directly to the design of a watertight shaft. This load case will commonly occur where a main shaft is cast against a geostatically stable primary liner and the only load applied to the final shaft is that of a uniform ground water load. Ernst Amstutz wrote his first paper on buckling of pressure-shaft steel linings in 1950 and subsequently improved his theory (Amstutz, 1970), which was then widely adopted for use within the industry. Years later, an alternative approach (Jacobsen, 1974) was proposed. Within his paper Jacobsen critiques Amstutz work, identifying some mathematical inconsistencies and highlighting limitations of the theory imposed by approximations adopted by Amstutz. Despite these limitations Amstutz work has still been used as the favoured design theory for use in the mining industry. In reviewing this body of work the author realised that with the advent of readily available computing software it was possible to adopt an iterative approach using Amstutz approximate formulae to find a solution to the original precise formulae, thus eliminating the limitations highlighted by Jacobsen The shear deformation to load characteristics of bolts has long been established (Crawford & Kulak 1968) and used for the plastic design of bolted connections in shear. This relationship is directly transferable to the design of shear studs, typical properties are well known, and actual values easily established in simple lab tests. The author has taken this relationship and modified Amstutz theory (Amstutz, 1970) for shear anchored strengthened liner buckling, to give a more efficient solution, using readily available material properties."

"The lifetime cost of a material handling system, or any mine system, can be reduced through the application of quality engineering. Dynamic simulation is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance the experience and ingenuity of the design team. It cannot only de-bottleneck the system to improve system productivity, but also define critical design criteria to eliminate over-design and reduce capital cost. Eliminating over-design also reduces operating costs by lowering component replacement costs and by ensuring all parts of the system operate at a higher utilization and efficiency. IntroductionA mine owner’s profitability is improved when a mine is developed at the lowest lifetime cost. This cost relates not only to capital and operating costs, but also, to a great extent, on the efficiency and reliability of the operation. These factors are tied directly to the quality of the engineering which depends on the experience of the engineers involved, and their ability to apply known system information in a rational and constructive manner.It is becoming apparent that it is increasingly more difficult to deliver the quality of engineering expected and needed to provide attractive lifetime costs using traditional design methods. Historically, system information has been evaluated based on a limited amount of information to which global rules-of-thumb and the engineer’s personal experience were applied to develop design criteria. However, market forces are dictating that more system parameters be defined and that they be defined more accurately so that the most economical system can be developed. This increase in the volume of information and the need for more accurate predictions is straining, if not already exceeding, the ability of engineers to apply simple global rules of- thumb and to combine all the information in a rational, comprehensive and representative set of design criteria. Furthermore, as proposed system production rates increase beyond established industry practice, the extrapolation of the engineer’s experience becomes more difficult and increases the risk in the proposed design."

Shaft sinking through solid rock, which contains little or no water, poses little difficulty. However, when loose, water-bearing strata have to be contended with, water control measures, and pumping facilities are needed. Shaft sinking in Athabasca Basin requires sinking through water bearing sandstone which can be highly fractured. Intersection of local zones of extensive fracturing results in the potential for high water inflows with pressures up to 5 Mpa. Grouting is carried out ahead of each shaft sinking interval as water control strategy. In the grouting method, liquid cement is forced into the water-bearing earth under very high pressure. Shaft sinking performance which can be quantified in terms of rate of advance is highly dependent on the days spent at each interval grouting before sinking can advance to the next interval. This paper presents the shaft sinking experience in Athabasca basin and how some of this is translated into Geoscientific Investigations for Future Shafts. A comparison of Geoscientific data collected from future shafts at McArthur River and Millennium Mines is compared to historical data collected from pilot holes, where shafts have already been sunk. The paper concludes with the strategies for better integration of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical data.

The design of the long-hole sublevel mining method was originally based on the traditional assumption that the principal load was due to the weight of the overlying rock, and that the horizontal stresses are equal to one-third of the vertical stress. However, as mining progressed, the virgin lateral stress was found to be equal to or greater than the vertical stress. The virgin stress in the rock mass is not uniform throughout the folded orebody and adjacent strata. From detailed investigations, three basic patterns of virgin stress in ore panels have been inferred: uniform, bent and twisted. Stresses induced by stoping are up to three times greater than original stresses in the rock mass; they cause heavy ground conditions and make extraction of ore difficult. In the last ten years, the original mining system has been modified several times in order to destress the ground and improve the extraction of ore.

"Project development has been increasingly formalized in the past decade, with most organizations having extensive and descriptive deliverables documents and processes to govern the stage gate progress of capital projects. Although this has improved the general governance of capital project development and execution, it has perhaps not led to improved business success. This paper identifies specific challenges associated with developing complex projects with multiple stakeholder interests over the long timeframe of the project life cycle. The paper outlines these challenges and suggests management approaches and aspects of project development where increased focus is required to achieve improved business outcomes."

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. THE SULLIVAN MINE The Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and ? Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, is situated at Kimberley, B.C., nineteen miles from Cranbrook, a divisional point on the Crowsnest Pass branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. Production started on a small scale in 1900, and in 1914 the mine became the largest lead producer in Canada. In 1925 it was the largest single producer of lead and zinc in the world. Since operations commenced, 4,800,000 tons of ore have been produced from stopes and 170,000 tons from development. At the present time, ore is being mined at the rate of 1,100,000 tons per year, with a yield of about 200,000 lb. lead, 110,000 lb. zinc, and 4,000,000 oz. silver. The town of Kimberley is easily accessible by road as well as by rail. The altitude at Mark creek, a tributary of the St. Mary's river, is 3,700 feet. To th'e north of the creek, Sullivan hill rises to a height of 6,100 feet, and it is on the southern slope of this hill that the mine is located. Sullivan hill is in the Purcell range, which rises between the Rocky Mountain trench on the east and Kootenay lake on the west. It thus lies within what is commonly referred to as the East Kootenay district.

In the 1990’s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead’s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
