Sherritt International Corporation experienced corrosion failures with the 316L stainless steel tubing in a high-pressure still condenser employed for ammonia recovery. A detailed failure analysis was conducted on the condenser tubing to determine the mode and the root cause of the failure. The analysis included both optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the inner and outer surfaces of the tube as well as characterization of the corrosion products using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Results revealed that the corrosion attack was confined to the first ?100 mm of the tubing at the inlet where the tube was connected to the top tubesheet. The tube suffered both external stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) and crevice corrosion from the shell side (water side), and wall thinning of the inner surface (the tube side) due to erosion corrosion. It was evident that failure of one of the tubes occurred due to SCC that penetrated the whole wall thickness and resulted in a leak failure. Some prevention measures are proposed to avoid this type of corrosion attack in the future.

Located in the James Bay Territory of Quebec (figure 1), the Clearwater property is jointly owned by SOQUEM Inc. and Eastmain Resources Inc. Exploration on the property since the early 70's has resulted in the discovery of several gold showings. Exploration work by the joint venture since 1995 has led to the definition of the Eau Claire Zone containing an indicated resource of 540 000 tonnes grading 11.1 g/t Au (8.7 g/t Au cut at 34.28 g/t Au). Hosted by the archean Eastmain Greenstone Belt, the property geology is dominated by mafic volcanics containing thin horizons of felsic volcanics and/or sedimentary rocks (figure 2). The sequence is metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies and contains two small toalitic intrusions. Regionally, the structural trend is oriented E-W but in the area of the Eau Claire Zone a second trend oriented NE-SW is also present. The first exploration work on the property was conducted by SEREM and SDBJ from 1973 to 1976. It consisted of an airborne electromagnetic survey and a ground follow-up program on several grids. This program, comprising geological mapping, geophysics and drilling, led to the discovery of the Natel showing where a drill intersection returned 8.89 g/t Au over 2.65 m. From 1978 to 1985 the area was withdrawn from staking because of the hydroelectric projects of the James Bay. In 1985, Westmin Resources Limited and Eastmain Resources began an exploration program based on a helicopterborne electromagnetic survey. Once again, a ground follow-up program was conducted on several grids. This program included a soil geochemical survey that identified a strong (up to 10 g/t) gold anomaly. Drilling of the anomaly led to the discovery of the Eau Claire Zone where resources were estimated at 270 000 tonnes grading 6.1 g/t Au at the end of 1990. In 1995, SOQUEM Inc. took an option to gain a 50% interest on the property and obtained its interest in 1998. Since 1995, two principal mineralization zones were identified on the property. The "Rosemary Zone" consists of veinlets and disseminations of pyrite and chalcopyrite within a magnetite-rich amphibolite. The mineralized zone was identified by stripping within an area of 1000 by 500 metres. Drilling indicates copper grades up to 0.32 % Cu over 49.2 m. with locally grades of 0.75 % Cu over 5.9 m. The mineralised zone is associated with QFP dykes and corresponds to a strong magnetic anomaly and a strong copper and molybdenum soil anomaly. The "Eau Claire Zone" consists principally of a set of gold bearing quartz-tourmaline veins oriented E-W and dipping at 45-50??to the south (figure 3). More than ten different veins are recognised in the zone and up to eight veins were observed in a single trench (figure 4). The host rock between the veins shows a degree of deformation similar to the regional volcanosedimentary rocks. Each vein is hosted by a unit of actinolite-tourmaline-biotite schist up to one meter thick. The veins and their hosting schist clearly cross-cut the schistosity of the hosting lithologies and the contacts between amphibolites and felsic to intermediate rocks. Usually, the veins are less than a meter thick and are composed of quartz, tourmaline and calcite. The proportion of quartz and tourmaline varies from 0 to 80% within a single vein. The veins commonly show massive, banded or brecciated texture. Sulphides, mainly pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite, generally form less than 5% of the vein material.

The expansion of the mining industry, with other industries, of course, is dependent upon a supply of fresh capital from year to year. Mining is a speculative form of investment, though there is a wide range of risk as between indiudual undertakings. All of the leading financial writers, nowadays, agree that expansion is being seriously interfered with by the unprecedented load of taxation Canadians are carrying. Individuals have less for investment and corporations are obliged to defer necessary expenditures in order that the demands of the taxing authorities may be met. Naturally, speculative investments such as mining exploration suffer first. Undoubtedly, a great deal of cash raised by taxes, if left in the hands of individuals and corporations for investment and expansion, would have been far more beneficially used and would have developed the country more than any use made of it by the government, in the way of bonusing new industries, or the undertaking of large schemes of development. Government undertakings of this nature are often entered into without a proper knowledge of cost and probable return. Expert expenditure of the same sums by business men or corporations undoubtedly would generally produce more prosperity for the country as a whole. The absolute necessity for lower taxation is being increasingly known to the public at large, and eventually it is hoped that our governments will see the economic impossibility of continuing the present rate of expenditure. The successful Finance Minister of the near future will not be the one who can borrow the most money.

Recently, there has been much debate as to the relevance of reporting financial results using the conventional accounting systems, which is based on historical costs, during a period of rapid inflation. In the following paragraphs , the symptoms, if not the causes, of inflation, its detrimental effect on the financial soundness of business in general and the financial reporting changes being advocated to overcome perceived weaknesses in the present financial reporting system in accounting for the effects of inflation will be reviewed. Finally, a course of action as a sound approach to the financial reporting problem will be recommended.

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for the nano-scale exploration of materials at unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In this paper, we combine this approach with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to analyze the carbon distribution in residual solids found in solvent-diluted bitumen product extracted from Alberta oil sands. Major components of these contaminant solids are ultrafine clays. Biwettable clays have been associated with the formation of solid-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion, which are known to increase the content of both water and mineral solids in the final bitumen product. We demonstrate that the residual solids present in bitumen product contain carbon intermixed with mineral particles of various size and shape. By probing the carbon content at the nanometer scale with the high chemical sensitivity of EELS, we provide direct evidence of carbon intermixing with clay platelets. This clay-organic association at the nanometer-scale will contribute to the biwettable, hydrophobic character of the platelets, and will therefore play a crucial role in the bitumen extraction process

"The Frood-Stobie Mine is by far the largest metal producer in the Sudbury area. Its efficient development was made possible by the consolidation of three mining properties that covered parts of the same ore body. They were known as the Frood Mine, the Frood Extension, and the Stobie Mine.The southwest or Frood portion of the orebody was discovered by Thomas Frood and A. J. Cockburn in 1884. Cockburn's interest was acquired by J. H. Metcalf and W. B. McAllister and patents were issued to Frood, Metcalf, and McAllister in 1884. The property was purchased by the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) in 1886.James Stobie discovered the northeast or Stobie part of the orebody in 1885. In 1886 Stobie and Rinaldo McConnell applied for the location and patent was issued in 1886. They sold the property to the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) the same year.The Frood Extension property included very little of the ore zone at surface but it covered ore down the dip from Frood. Frank Cochrane was granted title to the property in 1908 and sold it to the Mond Nickel Company in 1910. The title was transferred to the International Nickel Company in 1929 at the time of the Inco-Mond merger.Prior to 1930 the three properties produced a total of about 1 ,000,000 tons of ore from mining done during the periods 1887-1903, 1913-1915 and 1925-1929. Since 1929 the Frood-Stobie operation has produced more than 120,000,000 tons of ore, about half from open pits and half from square set and blast hole stoping. The current production rate is in excess of 6,000,000 tons per year.The principal products from the ore are nickel and copper. The by-products are iron ore, cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and sulphuric acid."

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

"Dome mine, in the Porcupine mining camp of northern Ontario, is one of the important gold mines of Canada, its production of gold from the commencement in 1910 to the end of 1946 having a value of $149,000,000.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe oldest rocks in the mine are greenstones of Keewatin age(l). Those to the south are known as the southern greenstones, but little is known of their structure. Those in the northwest part of Fig. 1 and the north part of Fig. 2 are known as the northern greenstones or greenstone 'nose'. They face north, dip steeply north, and end to the east against an unconformity which pitches northeast about 20°. The volcanics are overlain unconformably by Timiskaming .conglomerate and slate. All these rocks are cut by porphyry. Closely associated with the porphyry is a group of rocks that have suffered extreme alteration. Diabase dykes intrude all the other rocks and the ore. The principal massive rocks in the mine are two adjacent flows known asthe andesite (south) and dacite (Fig. 1). They are composed chiefly ofmassive, medium-grained lava. Pillows, flow lines, and other typically volcanicfeatures are found along the tops of both flows and at other places in theandesite. These parts nearly everywhere show a slight schistosity panllelwith the flows except in the orebodies, where they are massive."

"The rising cost of extracting metals from existing traditional deposits, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a greater awareness of corporate social responsibility issues are all factors in stimulating the examination of mine tailings and small-scale alluvial deposits as a potential source of new raw materials. Furthermore, despite tougher economic times the demand for commodities remains strong, in no small part as a result of the growth of the world’s emerging economies.This combination of social and economic factors looks set to continue in the long term which will encourage greater recovery of materials from previously ignored sources such as mine tailings and ores from alluvial deposits.An expansion in the recovery of useful materials from mining-related activities is likely to require the use of robust and innovative techniques that have a built-in degree of future-proofing; DC plasma technology is one such technology.As a result of its ability to separate the valuable metal and minerals from the waste material while destroying hazardous compounds, Tetronics’ DC arc technology offers an alternative approach to resource recovery from a wide range of mine ores. Harmful cyanide compounds and the vast quantities of water used in conventional hydrometallurgical processing are avoided when plasma processing is adopted. "Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef. The surveys were facilitated by choosing reefs with a concession road passing directly over them ."

"Flotation circuits are typically controlled using on-line elemental assays obtained from the slurry lines. In base metal applications, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers are the most common instruments for elemental analysis of the slurries. Eagle Mine has been utilizing a Courier XRF Analyzer since 2014. Typically, in XRF analysis, the sampling rate is 10-25 minutes which is good enough for manual process control. In 2018, Eagle Mine upgraded the Courier XRF analyzer with the Rapid Measurement module that is based on reflectance spectroscopy. This option reduces the sampling rate to 10-15 seconds, while maintaining the superior accuracy of the XRF analyzer. This paper presents the results from implementation of Rapid Measurement at Eagle Mine.INTRODUCTION Eagle mine is an underground mine producing nickel and copper concentrates. Eagle Mine is owned by Lundin mining and located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The Humboldt Mill, previously an iron ore processing facility, was refurbished in 2014 and is used to process the ore and produce separate nickel and copper concentrates. Approximately 2,000 metric tonnes of ore is milled per day. Ore is processed using a conventional crushing followed by single stage ball mill and flotation. Nickel and copper concentrate are transported to facilities in North America via rail car. A bulk copper-nickel concentrate is produced by separating the copper and nickel minerals from gangue material by flotation. The copper-nickel bulk concentrate is reground, followed by one stage of cleaning to reject further gangue minerals. The bulk cleaner concentrate is then subjected to a final flotation stage where the copper and nickel minerals are separated from one another through the addition of lime. Final concentrate grades are 14% Ni and 2% Cu in the nickel concentrate and 31% Cu and 0.8% Ni in copper concentrate."

"Cu ore bodies commonly contain oxide Cu at the surface, with sulfide Cu content increasing with depth. The recovery of oxide Cu minerals by flotation is a longstanding challenge in the minerals industry, especially for high acid-consuming ores which would not be economical for direct acid leaching. Current practice of oxide Cu recovery involves sulfidization (often using controlled potential sulfidization or CPS) using NaSH (or Na2S) followed by flotation using traditional sulfide collectors. CPS has shown to improve recovery of oxide Cu but has the following limitations: a) HSE issues with NaSH, b) high consumption of NaSH, and c) inability to recover certain oxide Cu minerals because they are refractory to sulfidization. The oxide Cu flotation is further complicated by the presence of certain non-sulfide gangue minerals which adversely impact both recovery and selectivity.Over the past eight decades, numerous collectors have been proposed and evaluated for the direct flotation (i.e. without sulfidization) of oxide Cu minerals, the most researched of which is alkyl hydroxamate. While there are numerous publications dealing with the fundamentals of interaction of alkyl hydroxamates with single minerals, there are few publications which discuss the practical aspects of alkyl hydroxamate use in ore flotation, particularly their use with sulfidizing agents. Case studies in this paper include methods to identify optimum combinations of sulfidizing agents and oxide collectors to maximize recovery for various types of ores. It was observed that some ores do not require any sulfidization, while others require at least partial sulfidization to improve efficacy of AHX. Depending upon the ore type and mineralogy, recovery improvement in the range of 5 to 15% units, over and above that achieved with CPS, has been observed with the use of AHX. For ores requiring high dosages of NaSH, it was shown that AHX can be used to reduce the NaSH consumption significantly. The challenges associated with the presence of non-sulfide gangue minerals in oxide copper ores are included, and the use of modifiers to alleviate the associated problems and enhance the performance of AHX is discussed."

Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. "The recycling of aluminum materials is a green industry while Al–Si–Fe is a typical scrap aluminum alloy. The key point of recycling Al–Si–Fe alloys is to separate Al and Fe. A method by introducing Al–Si–Fe alloy into Mg melt has been investigated in this work. A separation layer with gathered Fe–rich and Al–poor Fe3Al0.7Si0.3particleswereobtained at the bottom of the cooled ingot, indicating that ß–Al5FeSi phase evolves to Fe3Al0.7Si0.3,and quantities of Al are released to the upper Mg matrix simultaneously. However, the evolution of Al3Fe by adding binary Al–Fe alloy into Mg melt is different. It is supposed that element Si plays an important role in the phase evolution procedure, thus affects the performance of this method.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid development of aeronautic, automotive and aerospace technologies strongly depends on the consumption of materials while sustainable development is the future direction. Aluminum is a recyclable material and Fe is one of the most common impurities. Fe can be introduced into Al alloys by adding low–purity alloying materials and by using unprotected ferrous crucible, tools, or equipment (Belov, Eskin, & Avxentieva, 2005; Lu& Dahle, 2005).For instance, wear–resistant rings are usually inserted into piston head when producing Al–Si pistons and an infiltration procedure by putting the cast iron rings into Al melt before casting is always essential. As a result, both the re–melting of pistons and the reuse of Al melt for infiltrating rings lead to the enrichment of Fe element, which can be even high to5 wt.%(Viala, Peronnet, Barbeau, Bosselet, & Bouix, 2002).It is widely known that coarse ß–Al5FeSi particles will form in high Fe–contained Al–Si–Fe alloys which is harmful for the mechanical properties. In the past decades, several methods to eliminate the harmful effect of ß–Al5FeSi have been investigated which can be widely referred (Munson, 1967; Lee, Kawamura, Inoue, Cho, & Masumoto, 1997; Suárez–Peña& Asensio–Lozano, 2006; Eidhed, 2008).These methods can be divided into two kinds. One is to aggregate and remove the Fe–rich phase through the methods of centrifugation, gravity filtration or magnetic separation. The other way is modifing the morphology of flake–like ß–Al5FeSi by overheating the melt or adding neutralized elements. However, these traditional methods are rarely used due to respective disadvantages, while the commonly used method in industries is using primary aluminum for dilution. However, only less than 30wt.% of scrap Al can be added into primary Al melt for each melting work while it also results in the decrease of product quality simultaneously(Zhang, Liu, & Liu, 2016)."

The path from process conception to commercial implementation poses significant technical, economic, and sometimes political challenges for every project team. Solving the technical challenges typically distinguishes successful projects from those that fail. Here, the authors provide an outline for technical success based on lessons learned from years of experience in process design and R&D. Challenges faced by new technology developers, with regard to design and definition, are described. Experience-based methods to avoid missteps are shared. Special emphasis is placed on the selection of viable unit operations, definition of known and unknown parameters, experimental screening of options, and piloting for scalable design information. Use of computational models to define, assist, and interpret the pilot operations and results are described. Furthermore, the value of active collaboration amongst the design, research, and owner team is demonstrated.

This paper discusses microstructural changes produced by two novel approaches using electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) in which periodic strain fields/microporosity was incorporated within the large columnar grains of Zr02- 8wt.%Y2O3 (8YSZ). The traditional columnar microstructure of partially stabilized zirconia has been slightly modified to produce a lower thermal conductive thermal barrier coating (TBC) by periodically interrupting the condensing vapor resulting in microstructural modifications with diffuse or sharp interfaces and morphological changes on the sub-micron scale without changing the composition of the TBC. These microstructural modifications resulted in a 20-30% reduction in the thermal conductivity, 28-56% increase in hemispherical reflectance, improved oxidation cyclic life (over 100%), and better strain tolerance as compared to standard ZrO2-8wt.%Y2O3 deposited on platinum-nickel-aluminide and CoNiCrA1Y bond-coated MAR-M-247 test samples. The TBC with tailored microstructures were examined by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), steady-state laser heat flux technique, and hemispherical reflectance.

MR. N. T. AVARD : I would like to congratulate Dr. Cameron on his presentation of some pertinent facts about the Coal Resources of Nova Scotia. There is no question but what there is something very definitely wrong about the coal mining situation in this Province. These are times when we can with profit look facts in the face and attempt to solve some riddles. Perhaps now is the time when we can bring some of these coal mining facts into the open and look them over. Co-operatively, we might evolve some helpful solutions. However, I would like, first, to make some specific reference to the Joggins coal field, not as a mining expert, but rather as an executive who has evolved some ideas after some years of practical contact with this field. Dr. Cameron states that existing operations in this area will probably continue for a few years. As a matter of fact, under normal conditions, these mines are good for another twelve years. With the installation of more powerful equipment for hoisting, pumping, and ventilation, an additional five years could be counted on. With one exception, that pretty well clears up mining from the outcrop, hitherto the only method of approach in this field. The chief reason for this present limitation is prolific 'bootlegging' operations. It is too bad that these should have been permitted to ruin a valuable coal field. Moreover, I am cold by competent authorities that this need not have been so. At one time shortly before war broke out there were 74 bootleg operations within an area of one square mile around Joggins. However, despite the fact that these operations were illegal, I could not find any means of stopping then and I believe the same conditions existed in many other coal areas in the Province. For some reason, the eyes of the law were closed. The result is that many outcrop possibilities have been permanently ruined. The exception noted in the so-called Queen seam, which has definite possibilities for approach through the outcrop. This is probably the best coal in the district.

A recent report commissioned by the South African Chamber of Mines, Mining Vision 2030, identifies the South African mining industry?s negative legacy, its exploitation of people and the environment, as the single biggest hurdle to maximizing the industry?s impact on national development. Industry leaders have identified the need to put the past ?to rest?. With reference to three recent cases involving members of the South African mining industry, this paper points to the continuities between the past and present. It argues that the metaphor of ?multiple crossings? is more generative than the notion of putting the past ?to rest? for purposes of engaging with mining?s negative legacy.

Extensive and Intensive Prospecting As often pointed out, the search for new ore deposits may be carried on along two widely divergent lines. It may be either extensive or intensive. By extensive prospecting we mean a search for mineralized outcrops conducted over large and more or less virgin tracts of land, followed by a test of the practical value of any discovery made, the test being limited to the immediate vicinity of the outcrop. Extensive prospecting, was, in fact, the only policy known to the early prospectors. of the American continent and is still the rule in the remote sections of the Canadian Shield and in the African wilderness. It can be further characterized by the lack of emphasis placed on geological and other technical means as an aid to the search for ore. However, very little virgin ground is left, nowadays, for a man or a company to test their luck, and whatever is left is so remote from the necessary means of development that any new discovery will require considerable delay and expenditures to be amenable to profitable mining. On the other band, a great many of the favourable and still unexplored areas (and this is particularly true in Canada) are overburdened to such an extent that outcrops of bed-rock are extremely scarce and extensive prospecting is nearly impossible. Intensive prospecting, to the contrary, must be understood as a detailed search for ore carried on over limited areas in districts already known to be mineralized and covering regional structures whose relation to mineral deposits bas been estahlis.hed with a fair degree ot certainty. The search for deep-seated deposits in the vicinity of successful mines is a perfect example of intensive prospecting. As a matter of fact, the majority of the geologists employed by the mining industry are engaged in some kind of intensive prospecting.
