Reaction bath temperature is a major factor in processing liquid metals and in many applications where a balance between process duration and temperature has to be found to run a procedure efficiently. Also extremes of temperature can decrease the output of a process if too cold or even make it impossible, conversely overheating can be detrimental to both the product and furnace integrity. With the help of the new online temperature measurement system very accurate monitoring of the process is possible in contrast to the current routine practice where the temperature is measured periodically with dip thermocouples. The system works with a digital, fiber optic pyrometer, which is embedded in a refractory housing. Installation in the lining is possible below liquid level as nitrogen is blown to keep the system open and to ensure continuous sight from the optical head of the pyrometer to the molten metal through the tuyere. This permanent temperature measurement gives optimal process control with the potential of taking appropriate actions at an early stage enabling proactive process control. Therefore energy savings and even process endpoint detections can be realized.

"The solution of problems associated with development of a sour gas reserve will be of increasing importance in tl1e next few years if gas export is approved •by the National Energy Board. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the history of the Carstairs gas field, and tCI describe in a general manner the reservoir, and the producing and processing facilities.HISTORYThe Carstairs gas field was discovered in April 1958 when the discovery well, Home Carstairs 10-17, was successfully completed as a gas well in the Elkton member of the Turner Valley formation. Geo-graphic location of the field is shown in Figure No. 1. Note that the field is about five miles west of the town of Carstairs, Alberta, which in turn is about 40 miles north of Calgary. Drilling subsequent to the discovery well resulted in three addition-al producing wells and one dry hole during I.958; two producing wells during 1959; and one producing well and one dry hole during 1960. Thus, seven producing wells and two dry holes have been drilled in the Carstairs field to date.In November 1959 a 12-section block in the Carstairs field was unitized on a surface acre basis. Mean-while, in June 1959, operators in the field executed an ""Interim Plant Agreement"" that provided the money needed to start construction of a joint venture processing plant and gathering system. Construction of the plant and gathering system was completed in February 1960."

"Ilo Copper Smelter operates since 2007 with an ISASMELTTM furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy) associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces for separation of matte and slag, and which directly produces a discard slag. Southern Peru continually has been improving the slag chemistry of its ISASMELTTM furnace in order to reduce copper losses, given its big economic impact due to large slag mass generation. The present paper describes the influence of the CaO, Al2O3 and magnetite content in the slag of the ISASMELTTM furnace correlated with the SiO2/Fe ratio and its liquidus slag. Also it defines the best slag chemistry and operating practice in order to reduce the copper losses without compromise the bricks life of the furnace.INTRODUCTIONIlo Copper Smelter of Southern Peru (Grupo Mexico) is located on the southern coast of Peru, and treats mainly copper concentrates produced in its own mines (Toquepala and Cuajone).The modernized smelter was commissioned in 2007 and operates with an ISASMELT™ furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy), which is associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces (RHF) for separation of matte and slag. This slag is directly sent to the dump. Figure 1 shows the smelter flow diagram.The ISASMELT™ process is a bath-smelting process using a single lance. The lance tip is immersed into a molten slag bath contained within the stationary, vertical, refractory-lined ISASMELT™ furnace. The injection of oxygen-enriched air, through the lance into the slag results in a highly turbulent molten bath. Feed material falling into the turbulent bath from above reacts rapidly, resulting in extremely high productivity for a relatively small bath volume."

This paper explains the application details at Sudbury and the benefits achieved from their Full Stream, Elemental Slurry Analyzers.INTRODUCTIONSudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), a Glencore Company consists of two underground nickel/copper mines in Sudbury, Nickel Rim South and, Fraser, along with the Strathcona mill and the Sudbury smelter. The facilities are spread throughout the 60 kilometer-long, oval-shaped geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin (Figure 1). The company has been mining nickel-copper ores in the Sudbury area since 1929. Nickel and copper are the primary focus of operations at Nickel Rim South and Fraser. Other base metals such as cobalt and precious metals are also produced."

Titanium and zirconium heavy minerals occur in the tailings streams from processing plants which use the hot-water extraction process for recovery of bitumen from tar sand. In a research program conducted by Syncrude Canada Limited, the crude tailings stream was upgraded to produce quality zircon and titanium mineral products. To process the tailings through conventional upgrading equipment, bitumen residues must first be removed from the mineral grains. Then, by gravity separation, fines and coarse sand grains were removed and a 71% heavy minerals concentrate was prepared which was further separated by high-tension equipment into zircon and titanium minerals concentrates. The zircon concentrate was upgraded by gravity, magnetic and high-tension cleaning to produce a high-quality 98% zircon product. The titanium minerals concentrate was separated into rutile, leucoxene and ilmenite fractions. Heavy minerals distribution in tar sand drilling core samples has been evaluated for various locations on Syncrude Lease 17, and expected annual production levels of heavy minerals have been estimated. A preliminary evaluation has been made of the potential for zircon, leucoxene and rutile production and for further upgrading of ilmenite and leucoxene to synthetic rutile for titanium dioxide pigment production.

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

Many mines combine open pit with underground mining, and on many occasions the underground mine is an extension of the open-pit. In these circumstances the decision about where the open-pit stops and the underground starts is crucial and driven by many factors. This paper looks at some of the ways that this cut-over can be calculated and specifically examines the calculation of it using modern mine optimization software. The paper provides a case study which will review various outcomes using these techniques, and demonstrates the influence of various factors on the optimal transition cut-over point. Biographies Mr Finch is a Divisional Manager and a Principal consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Vancouver, Canada. At Snowden Mr Finch leads a team of engineers that perform mining engineering studies for projects around the world. Prior to joining Snowden Mr Finch was the Mining Manager at Barrick?s Henty mine in Tasmania Australia. Prior to that Mr Finch has held a variety of roles in both consulting and operations working for various organisations at various levels in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Finch gained a bachelor?s degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Queensland in 1986, and a bachelor?s degree in Economics from the University of Queensland in 1993. His expertise is in mine planning, mine optimisation and mine management. Dr Elkington is a Consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Perth, Australia. He is responsible for the design and implementation of Snowden?s proprietary optimization software products. Prior to joining Snowden Dr Elkington completed his PhD in Mine Optimisation at The University of Western Australia, and bachelor?s degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce from The University of Western Australia. Approximately two-thirds of the annual 210,000 tons at copper refined by AMAX Inc. at the United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey, comes from a wide variety of copper scrap ranging from low-grade smelter scrap to wirebar-grade material. "There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. Comminution is the science of size reduction of brittle materials. It is integral to mineral extraction and is one of the most energy intensive processes in the mining industry. There are a number of tests used to quantify the strength of ore, which are then used to size the AG / SAG mill in circuit design. The calculated energy utilized for breakage in these devices is based on the assumptions that the materials treated are of average shape and that the processing equipment is designed to break the ore as efficiently as possible under the given operating conditions. In drop weight tests, it was found that shape significantly influences the measured rock strength. Controlled experiments with variations in blends of rock shape show that mill throughput increases with the addition of weaker shaped rocks.

A leaching process for recycling small car motor scraps dismantled from End- of - Life -Vehicles (ELV) was investigated using waste pickling acid in steel work. Steel parts of mortar scraps were leached by waste pickling acid and Cu wire was recovered as pure Cu in the process. Pickling acid solution after leaching could be recycled in an ordinary process for waste pickling acid solution. High grade FeSO4 agent could be produced using H2SO4 as a pickling solution.

"Over the last decade or so, the availability of commercial thermodynamic modelling packages, such as FactSageTM, have been utilized to help the plant optimize slag chemistry and to minimize slag handling issues that can arise, such as those due to a process upset, for example, by undue feed variability. This paper illustrates an extension of the application of this software in examining a large range of NCV operating parameters, such as the %Fe/SiO2 ratio in the slag and the level of minor gangue components in the slag including CaO, Al2O3, ZnO, MgO, and PbO. The conditions influencing the slag liquidus range of NCV slag are discussed with respect to the overall process chemistry.Given that a sufficiently low %Fe/SiO2 ratio is used in NCV slag, most components such as CaO-ZnOPbO- Al2O3-MgO, in small concentration, all contribute to lowering the NCV slag liquidus. Considering the present level of these minor components, the NCV can operate consistently at 1200°C if the %Fe/SiO2 is between 0.6 and 0.8 in the slag. Using the type of phase diagrams presented in this paper, it is possible to develop different Noranda reactor/Noranda converter operating strategies adapted to the feedstocks available at Xstrata mines/plants or from other sources. The NCV is unique in that a fayalite-based slag is employed for high-efficiency continuous converting with excellent operating results."

Although doubt has been expressed many times as to who first brought self-contained breathing apparatus to this side of the Atlantic, there is none whatever that the first organized station was established at Glace Bay, N .S., by the Dominion Coal Company, in 1907. This station was started with 20 sets of 1907 "Draeger" apparatus and all necessary station equipment and supplies. After the fire at No. 1 pit, Sydney Mines, in 1908, the Nova Scotia Steel Company installed 15 sets of "Draeger" and sup-plies, which were housed in a rescue car (a converted pull-man.) In 1909 or '10 a fire occurred at the Back Pit, Stellarton, where the apparatus from Glace Bay was used, and subsequently the Acadia Company erected a station and in-stalled 10 sets of "Securitas" apparatus. In 1912 the station at New Waterford was opened and equipped with "Draeger," and the same year the station at Springhill was built and equipped with the same type. Sometime during past years the Nova Scotia Steel Company acquired a couple of "Proto" machines, and after the explosion at the Allan shaft in 1918 the Acadia Coal Company added some "Gibbs" to their station. From this it will be seen that when the coal-fields were organized under the British Empire Steel Corporation the equipment was rather mixed, therefore steps were taken by the executive to stanardize the whole of the rescue and recovery work.

"The data that many mineral processing plants make use of, is provided by samples taken from sampling systems which are inadequately designed or improperly maintained, and therefore cause detrimental effects to plant operations, production planning and metallurgical accounting! Poorly designed or maintained sampling systems will likely produce low probability samples which give the operator a false sense of security of the product and the process. If data is the basis for action (Flintoff, 1992, p.2), then using the resulting suspect or bad assays by operators, control systems, or metallurgist and administration personnel will act and make decisions which may adversely affect the profitability of a processing plant. Here we will discuss some of the fundamental sampling problems, propagation of errors and a method to estimate what impact this has on an operations Net Smelter Return.INTRODUCTIONIn order to control a mineral processing plant at its best potential, it is necessary to obtain the best possible measurement results of the metal or mineral in question. The sample which is delivered to a measuring instrument, or lab, needs to be of the highest probability to be able to achieve this. This paper will discuss the effects of sampling errors on grade / recovery and grade / Net Smelter Return (NSR) and provide a method to estimate the monetary advantages of using probabilistic sampling in a processing plant.REVIEW OF SAMPLINGSampling, by definition, is the removal of a small representative portion from a total consignment, or flow, for the purpose of accounting or process control.• A sample can only be considered representative, if each and every increment collected, in each of the sampling stages, is representative.• Each particle of the sampling lot must have the same probability of being included in the final sample.• If both of the above conditions are met, then the final sample will be representative of the complete sampling lot.It is commonly known that in order to take truly representative and probabilistic sample, best practices indicate that:• The total stream should be sampled.• The sample cutter should intersect the sample at right angles to the flow.• The sample cutter should travel through the stream at a linear and constant speed and the speed deviations should be less than 5%."

"Recently, small sized micro-needles for medical are required more frequently by patients. The biggest reason is that it presents great burden on the patients, due to the size of the needle injection. People need to use a very small needle to lower the pain, but the downfall is that it makes them more expensive due to their complicated manufacturing method. Therefore, we need to fabricate a needle by wire-drawing to decrease its price. Tube-drawing is beneficial for its production value; however, in conventional tube-drawing it is difficult of control the wall thickness of the tube and makes it 1mmor lower in diameter. That is why, we propose fluid-mandrel drawing for new tube drawing. This method allows fabrication of a fine tube by using the pressure of the fluid in the tube. In this research, the goal is the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing and its evaluation. Finally, the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing was conducted and in result a tube with a diameter of 0.2mm, high strength and thin wall and fine inner surface was drawn, which can be used as a lesser pain micro-needle.INTRODUCTIONThe main manufacturing method of the current medical needles is roll forming. With this method, it is difficult to make a tube with a diameter lower than 1mm. Deep drawing has been proposed and used as method to further reduce the diameter, but this method is costly and the injection needle obtained by this method is several times more expensive.Therefore, we need to obtain a fine medical needle by drawing process that can be mass-produced and inexpensively manufactured. However, with the conventional drawing process, it is not possible to obtain a syringe needle with a reduced diameter easily, that is why, a fluid-mandrel drawing has been proposed which can reduce the diameter without damaging the inner surface. The methodology of the method is, a fluid is filled in the sealed tube and the pressure inside the tube during drawing is responsible for the good inner surface and wall thickness. It is also expected that the fluid can be easily discarded and that the tube can be manufactured on a long scale."

Introduction In the contact process for ?the manufacture of sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide gas - produced by the burning of sulphur or of sulphur-bearing ores, or as a by-product in the treatment of sulphide ores - is made to combine with the oxygen of the air to form sulphur trioxide, which then only requires the addition of water to form sulphuric acid. The substance, as for example platinum, causing this combination is usually referred to as a catalyst, a convenient term, in the definition and explanation of which many pages have been written. Catalysis is now a comparatively common means of effecting chemical combination, but if the question were raised here tonight as to what actually goes on when this apparently innocent third party unites the parties of the first and second . part, without itself being altered in any way, I am afraid even our most learned members would have to confess their inability to entirely explain the phenomenon; for although the subject is under investigation, there is still much to learn. The contact process, however, is one of the outstanding achievements in chemical engineering. ? From the standpoint of the difficulties involved and the time absorbed in their solution, it probably stands alone in the field of technical chemistry. In fact, the manufacture of sulphuric acid has, from the earliest days, been surrounded with problems which have interested the ablest chemists. The Chamber System Although this paper has particularly to deal with the contact process, it may not be amiss to refer briefly to the chamber system, which was, and still is, a most important factor in the sulphuric acid industry.

"Depending on the application, zirconia, fused magnesia and graphite have been found to be the most suitable crucible materials for melting uranium metal and its alloys. Although graphite has been found to be satisfactory for uranium and uranium alloy castings with cross sections of 4 square inches or greater, ceramic-type molds are superior for small sections and those shaped castings which prohibit the economic use of machined graphite molds. Heating cycles, addition mechanisms and furnace conditions for melting are discussed."

THE object in prospecting is to find ore. With the exception of certain discoveries of more or less accidental nature, intelligent prospecting as conducted today is, whether consciously or not, based upon a process of elimination. In the following discuss on it is proposed to evaluate those factors that enter into the eliminating of certain tracts of ground and, conyersely, the concentrating of attention upon others. The danger of generalizations as to the barrenness of cer.ain areas, without having due regard for all such factors, is emphasized. The fact that our conception as to what areas or rock formations are to be regarded as favourable or unfavourable is, in some measure at least, changing with new discoveries under diverse and unexpected circumstances, adds more point to the discussion. The criticism might be raised that the subject is treated largely from the standpoint of geology, but that may be met by stating that it is, and must continue to remain, precisely from this standpoint that the prospecror directs his activities. Briefly, the geologist may render the greatest service to the prospector in the early steps of selecting (a) the general territory in which to prospect; (b) the area to be intensively prospected; and, finally, (c) those parts of the claim or claims to be prospected in detail. Although certain phases of the discussion will be, in some measure, of general application, we shall here concern ourselves essentially with prospecting in the pre-Cambrian shield. Furthermore, the subject is so large that it has been decided to limit it to a consideration of that portion of the pre-Cambrian rocks in which is situated the mining district of western Quebec, of which the writer can speak with more personal knowledge. This limitation need not, however, seriously detract from whatever merit the discussion may possess, since the deposits concerned cover a fairly wide range of metallic ores, including gold, copper with associated zinc, and, lastly, molybdenum.

"Redpath Canada Limited and joint venture partner Thyssen Mining and Construction Canada have recently completed the sinking of the Scissors Creek service in Saskatchewan through its joint owned company, Associated Mining Construction (AMC). The Scissors Creek service shaft was sunk at Nutrien’s Rocanville mine. The following paper outlines the shaft sinking plant and the methodology related to sinking and shaft lining. KEYWORDS Hydraulic shaft jumbo, Hydraulic shaft mucker, Potash shaft sinking, Shaft lining, Sinking galloway INTRODUCTION The sinking and lining of shafts at mines to access mineral deposits has always been one of the great mining challenges for owners, engineers and contractors. Over the course of history in Canadian mining, the sinking of potash shafts through the notorious Blairmore formation of Saskatchewan has proved to be some of the most challenging shaft sinking projects on record. There is no doubt that today’s shaft sinking business demands the utmost in safety performance while delivering projects within schedule and budget. Given these requisites, Redpath and TMCC (executed under the joint venture company, Associated Mining Construction or AMC), were taxed with developing the shaft sinking system to deliver this program in the safest and cost effective manner, with due regard to schedule and quality. Traditionally the potash shafts sunk in Saskatchewan involved a significant level of manual labour, owing to the methodology of excavation by means of chipping the frozen shaft sections with hand held pneumatic machines, and manually placing tubbing segments or steel liners of the shaft lining system. Most certainly, the AMC team wanted to make a step change from those earlier sinking programs and develop systems for sinking this potash shaft that removed the high level of manual work, thus making this project inherently safer, while endeavoring to sink more efficiently. With that in mind, the team embarked on a design program to improve its overall shaft sinking systems without the requirement for excessive capital and methodology flexibility to adapt to potential changing conditions expected to be encountered during shaft sinking. This was especially important should the new approach be met with less than expected success, and retrofitting of the system was required. The concepts were developed to provide for a much improved work environment, while easing the manual labour burden on the workers with innovative equipment and approach to the work."

Consequently, the industry?s knowledge of energy efficiency improvement opportunities, more energy efficient technologies, renewable energy technologies, energy procurement practices, and most importantly, practical approaches for integrating the energy management best practices into business processes and operational procedures has improved greatly. Based on 25 years of experience leading the management of energy in mining operations and the Canadian mining community, the author discusses the key building blocks in the evolution toward becoming an energy efficient mining facility. Sustainable energy management depends on the internalization of the behaviors related to the effective energy use by a mining organization. The paper outlines the typical business drivers that stimulate top management commitment to allocate the resources necessary for this to happen. It also explores the barriers that mining companies must overcome to maintain the commitment. Additionally, it will advocate the need for the application of the principles of organizational change management as part of the energy management implementation process. The question regarding how energy management can be made to happen in a way that is practical for an established organization is answered by providing the details of the framework for energy management, the methodology for controlling energy use, and the roadmap for integrating energy as a key business parameter and production process input variable. An Energy Management System standard developed within the Mining Association of Canada?s ( MAC ) Towards Sustainable Mining ( TSM ) initiative has played an important role in increasing the capacity of the Canadian mining industry to manage energy. The impact of the application the MAC TSM Energy/GHG Management Protocol by Canadian mining companies will be discussed. In June of 2011, the international ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems standard was finalized and published for use. The structure of ISO 50001 will be outlined along with its applicability to the mining industry. Opportunities for practically improving mining energy performance along with the most appropriate current new technologies will be identified. A brief discussion of case studies will be included that demonstrates the successful implementation of Energy Conservation Measures ( EAC?s ) and economic benefits. In conclusion, thoughts on important areas of research and development related to increasing mining energy efficiency will be provided.
