Abstract The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, have replaced diamond drills with percussion drills and tungsten: carbide bits for most of their blast hole drilling operations and have thereby reduced ore breaking costs. Two-inch Carset bits .are used, with one-inch hexagonal Atlas Chippewa alloy steel in 3-foot .and 6-foot lengths. Locally made couplings of Atlas SPS 245 alloy steel connect the rods. The machines used are 31½-inch automatic leyners with lugged or anvil block chucks. For drilling holes below the horizontal, the lugged machines with special adapter rods made from 114- inch solid round Atlas SPS 245 are required. These rods are lugged at one end and a water hole is drilled for six inches into the other end. Over this rod is placed a water swivel which permits the water or air to be sent directly into the steel. A decreased cost per foot, increased footage per shift, and the use of standard equipment and crews are some of the main advantages of tungsten carbide drilling over diamond drilling. Introduction Long-hole drilling with percussion drills and sectional steel was introduced in several American mines some twenty-five years ago. It did not prove very successful, however, because the rapid gauge loss in steel bits necessitated the use of very large starter bits. This in turn rapidly fatigued the straight carbon-steel then in use, made it difficult to maintain the couplings, and resulted in a slow drilling rate. The introduction of the tungsten carbide insert bit and alloy drill still has changed this picture and opened real possibilities for the application of percussion drills to blast-hole drilling. If this type of bit had been perfected ten years ago, much of the research work and experimenting done to apply diamond drills to ore breaking would have gone toward developing the application of the tungsten carbide bit to this problem.

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

"Kidd Creek Mines primarily employs sublevel blasthole stoping for underground mining operations. During pillar recovery in No.1 Mine and panel mining in No.2 Mine, the free standing fill exposures may reach a height of 100 m or more. Consequently, a competent consolidated rockfill has been required to fill the mined openings.Since 1976, a total of more than fifty stopes and pillars have been filled with over four million tonnes of backfill. Fill exposures, up to heights of 100 m, have stood up well after blasting adjacent to the backfill.The fill material consists of a graded aggregate, Portland cement and ground slag. Sand has been occasionally mixed in the fill material to serve as avoid filler. The aggregate is prepared in a fill crushing plant, transported underground through raises, and hauled to the filling stopes by conveyors in No. 1 Mine and by trucks in No.2 Mine.Two mixing methods are currently in use. No. I Mine utilizes the free fall of gravity; the fill materials are sprayed with cement slurry as the aggregate departs from the conveyor into a mixing culvert. The other is the use of a rotary mixer on a batch basis in No. 2 Mine.This paper describes the fill systems, filling operation s, and the backfill quality control practice, together with various testing results related to improving fill quality as well as reducing fill costs.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north o f the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of copper, zinc, lead, and silver ores annually from its No. 1 and No.2 underground mining operations. By 2025, the U.S. automotive industry will have to average 54.5 mpg (4.3l/100km) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ). While new/improved powertrain technology (turbocharging, electrification, diesels, transmissions and stop/start) will be critical, it is estimated that 25-40% of the new CAFÉ standards will require significant mass reduction, and lightweight structural materials will be required. This presentation examines vehicle mass reduction based on new developments in manufacturing automotive structures and components using light metals (aluminum and magnesium), conventional heavy metals (iron and steel), polymers, and carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composites. Components that used to be sand cast or pressure die cast provided minimal fatigue strength and ductility. But greater mass reduction uses more light metals in structural applications. They require eliminating porosity and inclusions to improve ductility and fatigue strength. Improved casting processing, with vacuum die casting, counter pressure and squeeze casting, and new forging and extrusion applications are being developed for this purpose. New grades of ultra-high strength steels can be made thinner, and save over 1/3 the mass vs conventional mild steels. But more complex and expensive processing, such as hot stamping and in-mold quenching, is required. Most engine block structures have migrated from grey cast iron to aluminum over the past 40 years. But compacted graphite cast iron has higher strength at high combustion temperatures and pressures so that high powered engines can be smaller and even lighter than aluminum. Assembling a range of lightweight materials into vehicle structures requires specialized assembly techniques, including sophisticated structural adhesives that can mitigate vehicles’ unique corrosion environment. The presentation will conclude with discussing lightweighting strategies of Asian, American and, European marques and the materials, component designs and assembly techniques used to achieve 2025 CAFÉ.

"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

Natural convective flow of the electrolyte solution plays an important role in several electrochemical systems. Copper refining electrolysis is the most important industrial process to produce high purity copper on large scale. Turbulent natural convection develops along vertical plane copper electrodes installed in an unstirred electrolyte accompanying with the electrochemical deposition and dissolution of copper during the electrolysis. It introduces the electrolyte stratification phenomenon. Thus, the electrolyte is circulated in a special way depending on each electrorefining tankhouse. The theoretical discussion is indispensable to understand the coupling phenomenon between the ionic mass transfer rate and the morphological variations of electrodeposited copper. In present study, the mass transfer rate of both Cu2+ and H+ ions as well as the momentum transfer rate is numerically analyzed accompanying with the turbulent natural convection along 1 m high Cu metal electrode surface.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

"Although many factors play roles in the estimation of recoverable reserves, smoothing effect and conditional bias are considered major geostatistical issues in the estimation. This paper introduces measures for smoothing effect and conditional bias, and provides insights into their relation to the estimation of recoverable reserves. Both smoothing effect and conditional bias are intrinsic to the information effect and kriging estimators. For a given level of drilling information, however, it is possible to identify the optimal search radius that minimizes conditional bias. Furthermore, it is also feasible to define variance correction factor for reduction of the smoothing effect from exploration block models. Both of these components are key to the accurate estimation of recoverable reserves. IntroductionThe accurate estimation of recoverable reserves is critical to decision making in different phases of feasibility study and mine planning. Much attention for improving the methodology of estimation has been focussed on the effect of the change-of-support (Parker, 1980; Dagdelen, 1996). For example, it is essential to make a volume- variance correction to the estimate of multiple indicator kriging (Hoerger, 1992). When the size of block, b, in the geostatistical model differs from that of selective mining unit (SMU), v, a volume-variance correction is warranted for the prediction of recoverable reserves.Most mining plans and decisions are made prior to the availability of high density blast-hole samples. In most mining operations, the true SMU grade Zv is unknown at the time of selection. Instead, the selection is based on the estimate Z v**derived from high density blast-hole samples within the deposit G. Nevertheless, the estimate Z v * of recoverable reserves in the stage of mine planning is derived from exploration data. At the end, the production result must be reconciled to the estimate Z v * . In other words, the selection is based on Z v** from blast-hole samples, while the final production figures are reconciled to Z v * from exploration drilling. For a given preselected cutoff grade z0, the actual mining panels will consist of the units having the estimated grade Z v** =z0 rather than the true grade Zv =z0. The difference between Z v** and Zv is usually of less concern."

The energetics of CO and CO2 hydrogenation to methanol were studied on a gold surface via periodic and cluster DFT calculations. CO hydrogenation appears to be much easier than CO2 hydrogenation on an Au(111) surface. The use of a cluster model does not seem to improve the energetics of CO2 hydrogenation. It is concluded that an active support (e.g. ZnO) will be required to increase the productivity of a gold surface towards synthesis gas conversion. The energetics of CO and H2 adsorption are improved on the cluster model compared to a slab model of an Au(111) surface, suggesting that nanosized gold particles may be beneficial in CO hydrogenation.

Introduction It is only fitting on this occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the Institute that we should indulge in a bit of retrospection and review the progress that has been made within this period in the various branches of the mining industry- progress that is so closely associated with the members of this Institute. Such a moment of retrospection will enable us better to appreciate the present status of the industry and to perceive more clearly the trends that should guide us in making sound plans for the future. The past half century has been a period of amazing industrial progress in Canada. In this period, the economy of our country has changed from one based chiefly on agriculture and the export of raw materials, to an economy based largely on a well integrated manufacturing industry. In all' o( these major developments, industrial minerals have played an important part and will play an increasingly, important part in the future. By ?industrial minerals? we mean the various non-metallic minerals (exclusive of fuels) as well as the rocks, sands, and clays used for industrial purposes. They are now used so widely and in such large quantities that modern industry could not function without them, and their continued availability at low cost is vital to the industrial future of Canada. The key position occupied by industrial minerals in modern Canadian industry was well illustrated two years ago when a strike occurred in the only Canadian plant producing soda-ash and calcium chloride at a time when those materials were already in short supply and unavailable from other sources. Within a short time of the shutdown of this plant, in which the two principal raw materials are limestone and salt, the great aluminium reduction plants on the Saguenay river were forced to curtail operations because of the lack of soda-ash, essential to the process of extracting aluminium from its ore. Automobile production, already harassed by a shortage of steel, was further hampered when glass for windshields and windows could not be supplied because the glass industry was slowed down almost to a standstill for want of soda-ash. Soap became almost unobtainable both to the housewife and to industrial users, because soda-ash is required in its manufacture. As a consequence of the soap shortage, the production o synthetic rubber at Sarnia was threatened because soap in large quantities is essential to the polymerization process. Motorists on gravelled highways all over Eastern Canada drove through clouds of dust because calcium chloride, used for dust laying, was not to be had. There were other cases of dislocation of industry related to the shutdown of this particular plant, but the above illustrates the wide ramifications of industrial minerals in modern industry. However, it is extremely doubtful if many Canadian citizens realized that these apparently unrelated happenings were connected in any way with limestone and salt.

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Si02, had been extracted."

The thorough analysis of results obtained from different testing campaigns performed on an alumina dry-scrubber pilot installation treating aluminum potline offgases, suggests a clear relationship between the emissions of gaseous fluoride and the fluoride saturation level of the alumina. The integration of this relationship into the development of a new generation of alumina dry scrubber represents an intriguing challenge regarding the design of more efficient air pollution control equipment. An innovative scheme challenging conventional industry practices was proposed. From theoretical simulations, the reduction in fluoride emissions can potentially be reduced by as much as 50% in the summer season. To validate this innovative approach, Solios in partnership with Alcoa Primary Metals, modified one of the Aluminerie de Deschambault's systems by adding new temporary equipment on the operating units and subjecting it to several test campaigns. This article presents the first results obtained in testing this new and innovative approach on alumina dry scrubbers used to capture fluoride emissions coming from aluminum electrolysis potlines.

Mineral engineering is defined as those engineering activities that relate to the discovery, development and utilization of mineral resources. Using petroleum engineering as an example, it is shown that the breadth of the field to be studied is a major educational problem. Breadth of field is aggravated by the rapidity with which technological demands may change. At present, special short courses serve to update engineering education. Recent experience suggests an increased rate of change for the future. The fact that engineers have typically human needs and goals, and the fact that engineers respond to these in our free society, introduces a third class of problems. One approach to the solution of these problems is the unified engineering curriculum based on a core of subject mat-ter common to all engineering. Experience suggests that the unified curriculum is an effective method to minimize the importance of the first two problem areas presented, and shows a degree of success in handling some problems within the third area. Perhaps, for the good of all segments of society, it is best to have both career-oriented and unified curricula represented by educational institutions of high quality.

THE problem of dust control in metal mines has, of late years, received considerable attention. In 1932, a detailed study of dust conditions at the Sullivan mine was undertaken and, while there are no actual data available regarding conditions prior to that date, there has unquestionably been a great improvement as a result of the investigation and of the preventive methods adopted. In attacking the problem, three main factors were considered: first, and most important, how to prevent dust from being formed; second, how to depress or collect it if formed; and third-if unable to accomplish these-what precautionary measures must be adopted to prevent inhalation of this dust. Seven distinct methods of dust control are now practised at the Sullivan. Six of these are employed underground; they are tabulated below in the order of their relative importance. The seventh method is used in the crushing plants on the surface. Par la suite, on presente la problematique d'écaillage à l’aide de barres conventionnelles et on discute les plus recénts développements des outils d'ecaillage portatifs et mécanisés ainsi que les techniques de détection des roches branlantes. Plus tard, on analyse la tâche d'écaillage avec des barres conventionnelles. Dans les chapitres qui suivent on présente un concept d'un outil d'écaillage portatif et mécanisé développe à l'Université Laval, ainsi que les résultats des essais de cet outil, effectués dans quelques mines au Québec. On constate que Ie nouvel outil d'écaillage démontre un potentieJ intéressant tant au niveau de l'effort requis pour effectuer la tâche d'écaillage que de la sécurité des mineurs.On conclut que l’application de cet outil fera un pas important sur Ia voie d'amélioration des conditions de travail dans les exploitations souterraines, tout en assuarnt une qualité accrue de l'écaillage.AbstractThe first part of this paper discusses the type of scaling operations presently in use in underground mines and derma; a scaling factor which is expressed as the:: area necessary to scale to extract one ton of ore. Subsequently, the problems associated with conventional scaling methods are discussed as well as recent developments in mechanized hand-held scaling devices and methods of loose detection. The elements of the scaling process are further analyzed. In subsequent sections of this paper, the conception and design of a mechanized scaling device, developed at Universite Laval is described. The results of field tests conducted in Quebec hard rock mines are presented. The experimental findings show that the mechanized hand-held scaling device shows great potential in improving the productivity and safety of underground mining operations."

Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. "The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

Les bancs de quartzite inhabituellement purs et epais decouverts lors de la cartographie geologique de la region de Charlevoix sont maintenant entres au stade de !'exploitation et se revelent etre une richesse naturelle durable pour cette region. Les etudes stratigraphiques effectuees dans cette partie (Quebecia) du bouclier canadien indiquent que la succession: lo. complexe a amphibolite et leptynite a la base, 2o. quartzite et gneiss a sillimanite, muscovite et gneiss calcosilicate et conglomeratique au sommet est constante sur de grandes distances (de Charlevoix a la Basse Cote Nord) et represente une sedimentation continentale et de plateforme, peu epaisse, du proterozotque inferieur. La purete et la grande epaisseur du quartzite s'expliqueraient par un processus de sedimentation continentale complexe ou se succedent climat tropical-humide et glaciaire-aride et transport fluviatile et eolien. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existent dans le monde, peu sont de qualite superieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement a ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-U ni s, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de I' Afrique du Sud. D'acces facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'a une quarantaine de kilometres de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le SaintLaurent. L'utilisation en metallurgie du quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro-silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium . La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriee pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peuvent etre utilisees pour la fabrication du verre et comme matiere de charge.
