In this investigation, the aging effect on creep behavior of A12024-10%SiC composite fabricated by powder metallurgy was studied. P/M bars were manufactured by hot powder extrusion method at 450°C with a ratio of 16 to 1. Creep specimens were over-aged at 187 ºC for 43 h. It was found that almost full density composite with relatively homogenous distribution of reinforcing particles throughout the aluminum alloy matrix could be attained by direct powder extrusion process. Creep tests were conducted at temperatures from 275 to 325°C under stresses from 25 to 60 MPa. The analysis of the creep mechanism determined that dislocation glide was the predominant mechanism of plastic deformation. The activation energy of the creep process was found to be higher than that of lattice self-diffusion in pure aluminum.

"Cobalt based super alloy stellite 6 was weld cladded on AISI 304 L stainless steel using SMAW process in order to improve the wear resistance for tyre crusher blades. Microstructure characterization and micro hardness testing was performed on stellite 6 cladding. The suitable parameters viz. 80 Amp current with arc weaving technique was selected by performing bead on plate experiment were further used for depositing multipass multilayer cladding to achieve full filler chemistry at the top surface. Further GTAW process was used for re-melting the top surface of the cladding. Comparative evaluation of the claddings showed that TIG re-melting resulted in increased microhardness and wear resistance in comparison to as cladded specimens even with lesser deposition of material. It was observed that TIG re-melting improved the hardness from 603 HV0.5 kg to 712 HV0.5 kg. Micro structures of stellite 6 contained cobalt solid solution matrix along with inter dendrite chromium carbides which resulted in the increased micro hardness values. Pin on disc abrasion tests were carried out at room temperature and the worn out surfaces were characterized using SEM and EDS.INTRODUCTIONThe crusher blades are used in many industries for crushing various types of material and its wider applications in tyre rubber crushing mills, metal-powder crushers industries etc. Most of the crusher blades are damaged by the wear and impact loading conditions. It is because of metal to metal abrasion and the temperature also plays a vital role in blunting the cutting edges of these blades. The wear is the major cause which leads to loss of material and thus the productivity that can never be recovered (Kotechi et al., 1992). The wear can be reduced by coating of various super alloys which could reduce the behavior of metal degradation even in aggressive environments. Cladding of cheaper low alloyed material with expensive superalloys to enhance the performance of components at low cost has been investigated by many scholars (Deng et al., 2010, Kennametal, 2007, Lolla et al., 2014, Singhet al., 2014, J.N et al., 2003, Ramkumar et al., 2012). Many researchers have reported that cladding is an application of build-up deposits of specialized alloys to resist abrasion, high temperature corrosion and impact loadings. Cladding is used for providing required mechanical strength properties as well as inhibition of oxidation and other corrosive degradation. Coatings are used to protect the heat affected areas like tubes of fluidized bed combustor etc. (Kirchbner et al., 2008, Wang et al., 1994, Hocking et al., 1993, Ananthapadmanabhan et al., 1991, Staia et al., 2001). Coating techniques are widely used for the protection of turbine engine and boiler tubes against high temperature corrosion attack, power generation equipment, chemical process equipment, aircraft engines, pulp and paper processing equipment, bridges, rollers and concrete reinforcements, orthopedics and dental, land-based and marine turbines, ships. Coatings of stellite 6 are widely used in steam turbine blades and boiler tubes for power generation because of an excellent combination of impact, wear and other properties. It can maintain its properties even at high temperature and in harsh environments (Kobayashiet al., 1999, Alam et al., 2009, Munehru et al., 2009). The loading and unloading conditions experienced by the material may induce the surface cracks which lead to its breakage and leaving large pits in the surface (Meng et al., 1995). "A new hydrometallurgical process for nickel extraction from a low grade laterite ore such as limonite has been developed by RIST and POSCO. This POSCO Nickel Extraction Process (PosNEP) consists of five main processes: ore reduction using hydrogen as a reductant; acid leaching at atmospheric pressure and temperature; cementation by the use of reduced-ore seed; production of the main product such as ferronickel or a high purity nickel compound; and production of by-products such as cobalt and iron in the forms of cobalt sulfate and iron oxide. In addition, hydrogen produced in acid leaching and hydrochloric acid regenerated in pyrohydrolysis for iron oxide production can be reused in the process, which makes PosNEP more cost-effective. The performance of PosNEP has been proven through pilot tests, showing that this process is economically and technically viable. In this paper, basic concepts and detailed test results of PosNEP are shown.INTRODUCTIONNickel has been extracted from two types of ore, sulfide and oxide ore. Nickel and cobalt usually occur together in the ores. The principal ore mineral of the sulfide is pentlandite, (Ni,Fe)9S8, which is easily beneficiated to produce sulfide concentrates(Moats & Davenport, 2014). These concentrates are usually treated by smelting and converting to make a matte. The produced matte is then purified through either hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes to produce high-purity nickel. In general, this process for sulfide ore has been known as a more cost-effective process than that for oxide ore.The oxide ore is laterite comprised of two different ore types, saprolite and limonite. The main nickel-bearing mineral of saprolite is nickeliferrous garnierite,(Mg,Ni)6Si4O10(OH)8, and that of limonite is nickeliferrous goethite (Fe,Ni)O·OH ore (Moats & Davenport, 2014). Since the saprolite has high contents of nickel and slag formers (MgO and SiO2) and a low content of iron, it tends to be treated by a pyrometallurgical smelting process such as calcination and electric furnace techniques to produce ferronickel for use in stainless steel. In this process, the cobalt in the ferronickel does not have any economic value."

This paper describes the geophysical Jogging of coal that is being carried out for the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom. An explanation of the technique is given and results are presented showing estimations of seam thickness to within ±0.5 in. and ash content to accuracies of ±2.5 per cent. The basic method of interpretation is outlined and some conclusions regarding the conditions of roof and floor material which may be deduced from the logs are explained. An indication of future developments in this field, including the identification of coal type and moisture content, is given.

IN THE DEVELOPMENT of procedures for the separation of minerals, the choice of reagents for flotation is frequently determined by the extent to which a given mineral is wettable by water. Measurements of the contact angle of an air bubble on wet mineral surfaces are often used in the laboratory to estimate the wettability of the surface. For the results of these measurements to be reproducible, the surface of the mineral must be polished to a mirror-like smoothness and must be free from oily contamination. Elaborate procedures for preparing mineral surfaces have been developed by Wark ( 1) and Taggart (2), and these procedures have been generally accepted as adequate for their purpose. The polishing techniques, how-ever, have certain inherent disadvantages which make it impossible to assess the effects of polishing, entrained abrasive, and adsorbed gases on the wettability of the mineral surface.

"Approximately two thirds of annual nickel production is used as a raw material in the making of stainless steel, and about 60% of these nickel products are in the form of metallic nickel such as nickel cathode or briquettes. In the stainless-steel production process nickel is blended with iron and chrome-based raw materials, and metallic nickel is typically only required for final steel fine-tuning. Outotec offers a new FeCrNi technology to enhance the nickel value chain for stainless steel producers. This involves the use of an HPAL-based intermediate nickel product (e.g., mixed hydroxides or NiO) as raw material in the Outotec FeCrNi process, for the production of a FeCrNi Master Alloy. The new process, designated as the FeCrNi process, offers multiple benefits compared to existing technologies such as: higher tolerance for impurities in the HPAL intermediate product, avoiding the need for further nickel refining, and the improved recovery of all metals in the FeCr process. The complete new FeCrNi value chain is based on proven technologies such as HPAL and the Outotec FeCr-process. This new innovative and promising value chain offers improved efficiencies for the HPAL based nickel production process combined with excellent sustainability aspects.INTRODUCTION In today’s global economy there is a constant need to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the metals production. The requirements for modern metal refining are tightening and cost efficient, safe and sustainable operation is the precondition for all investment. Outotec is offering now a novel way to combine FeCr and Nickel production to create a completely new value chain to source nickel to stainless steel. BACKGROUND Nickel The current nickel mine production is in the level of 2,000 tons annually and it is split 44% from sulphide based deposits and 56% from laterite deposits (Figure 1). Most (40%) of the nickel is refined to pure nickel metal whereas other products are FeNi (19%) and Nickel Pig Iron NPI (20%) (Roskill). The remaining part, roughly 21%, is nickel chemicals and intermediates. Most of the new investments in nickel are in the direct shipping of laterite to produce nickel pig iron. HPAL process is considered in few projects but no major HPAL projects have been started since the Ambatovy plant in Madagascar. Ambatovy reached the commercial production in 2014. The main primary nickel used is stainless steel manufacturing. In the year 2016 about 68% (~1,360 kt) of primary nickel production was used in stainless steel."

THE Hard Rock gold mine is in the Little Long Lac mining area, Thunder Bay district, northwestern Ontario. It is four miles by road from the town of Geraldton, which is on the Canadian National railway, 180 miles northeast of Port Arthur. The original discovery of gold-bearing quartz veins on the property was made in 1931. Shaft sinking began in the fall of 1934 and approximately 7,400 feet of lateral development on four levels was completed. In 1935, further discoveries were made half a mile west of the early workings, and the No. 2 shaft was sunk in this area in a porphyry zone. In January, 1938, a 20C-ton cyanide plant was completed and began drilling ore from the gold-bearing porphyry orebody. The daily feed was increased gradually to 300 tons in the next six months and a recovery of 97.5 per cent was effected. During the summer of the same year, a new and larger orebody was discovered to the north of the porphyry zone. It occurs in a band of iron formation and contains a high percentage of pyrite and arsenopyrite. Extensive tests were rr.ace on this sulphide ore in the Mines Branch ore dressing laboratory at Ottawa, in the laboratory of Canadian Industries, limited, at Toronto, and later at the mine, to find a suitable method of treatrr.ent. As a result of this research, a Potation plant was added to the original cyanide mill and on November 7th, 1938, differential flotation was used to separate the pyrite from the arsenopyrite fraction of the ore. The pyrite concentrate was re-ground and cyanide:l, and the arsenopyrire concentrate was stored for subsequent treatment. Differential flotation was discontinued in April, 1939, in favour of bulk formation of all the sulphides, and the whole cyanide residue was stored. On March 15th, 1939, a 10-ton pilot roaster was completed and rests were conducted on the arsenopyrite concentrate and the bulk concentrate. The results obtained led to the building of two roasters of the same type, large enough to roast all the concentrates. These roasters were put in operation on September 24th, 1939, and the calcines were cyanided in the original circuit.

In 2004, Boliden Odda underwent an extensive modernisation project targeting mainly the leaching section of the plant. Direct leach technology was introduced as part of this project. The Direct Leach process, developed by Outokumpu, is an atmospheric oxidative leach of zinc sulphide concentrate. The effects of this new processing operation on behaviour of iron in the plant are discussed. As well, the filterability of the new residue on belt filters prior to its deposition in mountain caverns is also discussed. The solids from the direct leach process have been analysed by scanning electron microscopy, and the results of these analyses are presented.

"This article was undertaken to investigate the effect of nickel and zirconium additions on the strength of 354 aluminum cast alloy. The cast alloys were given a solutionizing treatment followed by artificial aging at 190 ºC for 2 hr. High temperature tensile tests were conducted at various temperatures from 25ºC to 300ºC. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the microstructure of the samples. The results revealed that the intermetallics phases of (Al,Si)3(Zr,Ti), Al3CuNi and Al9NiFe are the main feature in the microstructures of alloys with Zr and Ni additions. The results also indicated that the tensile strength of alloy decreases with an increase in temperature. The combined addition of 0.2 wt% Zr and 0.2 wt% Ni leads to a 30% increase in the tensile properties at 300ºC compared to the base alloy.INTRODUCTIONThe task of improving the mechanical properties in an aluminum alloy at high temperatures should include the knowledge of several factors which are related principally to a decrease in the strength of the metal with increasing temperatures. This behavior is linked to the change or deterioration in the principal metallurgical parameters of the specific cast aluminum alloy during its performance at higher temperatures. Most of applications of Al-Si casting alloys are generally used at temperatures of no more than 230°C (Lee & Chen, 2002). This recommendation is made in view of the fact that, for certain applications such as those required by the automotive industry, these alloys must operate over a wide range of temperatures and stress conditions where temperatures are liable to rise even higher than 230ºC (Robson & Pragnell, 2003).Aluminum-silicon-copper-magnesium alloys such as the 354 alloys show a greater response to heat treatment as a result of the presence of both Mg and Cu. These alloy types display excellent strength and hardness VALUES (although at some sacrifice of ductility and corrosion resistance. These alloys are used for a wide range of applications, such as engine cooling fans, crankcases, high speed rotating parts, structural aerospace components, air compressor pistons, fuel pumps, compressor cases, timing gears, rocker arms, machine parts, and so forth (Cáceres, Svensson, & Taylor, 2003; Rurrxia, Rong-de, Yu-hua, Cherrxi, Xiao-feng, Heng-rong, & H. Zhuang-qi, 2004)."

Prior to installation of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) a series of laboratory tests were carried out to determine the design parameters and also determine key performance indicators (KPIs) for the industrial unit. The design parameters derived from the lab test work were then scaled up to estimate the industrial capacity of the HPGRs to be installed. These parameters include specific power draw, specific throughput, and specific force, rolls speed, product size distribution and wear rate of the rolls. This paper compares the performance of the scale-up procedure against the installed industrial size HPGR. Overall, the specific throughput of the industrial size HPGR is higher by a minimum of 30% compared to the expected scale-up value. As a result of the high specific throughput, the specific power draw and grind sizes are below the scale-up expectations in the commercial application. The impact of these factors also contribute to a lower than expected wear rate on the industrial rolls. Installed rolls achieved a service life in excess of 18,500 hours relative to the target of 6,850 hours predicted from the laboratory testing.

The final mechanical properties of wrought magnesium alloys are mostly controlled by microstructure and crystallographic orientation or texture. In common magnesium alloys, grain coarsening occurs during annealing process and formation of undesirable basal texture cannot be changed markedly. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of static precipitation on microstructure and texture evolution during annealing at 250 °C after warm rolling of Mg-Al-Sn alloy. Mg-3Al-3Sn (wt. %) alloy has been designed using thermodynamic modeling software, FactSageTM, based on forming target stable and incoherent Mg2Sn precipitate within the industrial deformation temperature range. Microstructures and precipitation were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopes and macro-texture was measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. It was found that static precipitates form in a large scale at the recrystallized grain boundaries and retards the grain growth during annealing. Slight weakening in basal texture was also observed during annealing.

Sub-stoichiometric roasting of arsenic-bearing copper ores is a well established practice. However, ores containing calcium commonly prove challenging where very low arsenic levels are desired, but the reasons for this phenomenon have largely been speculative. In the course of treating arsenicbearing copper ores by partial roasting in fluid bed reactors, XPS encountered one of these Ca-bearing ores which proved a challenge to roast to acceptably low levels of arsenic. Mineralogical examination of the calcines using a combination of XRD (X-ray diffraction), QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscope) and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analysis) helped to identify the arsenic bearing species and assisted in developing a workable theory on the sequence of reactions occurring during the roast. With the assistance of thermo-chemical modelling, this allowed adjustment of the roasting conditions to minimise the amount of arsenic retention in the calcine in spite of the presence of calcium in the ore and advance the roasting program to a commercially acceptable solution.

"The corrosion of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was studied from room temperature up to medium temperature (~160°C) under conditions relevant to medium temperature chalcopyrite leaching processes. The corrosion rates were measured by immersion and electrochemical tests in sulfuric acid. The influences of chloride, cupric and ferric ions on the corrosion rate and behavior were also investigated. Corrosion of the CP-Ti did not account for the total current density measured by linear polarization tests. The corrosion rates of CP-Ti under medium temperature leaching conditions were surprisingly high. The corrosion rate measured in ferric containing solution at 160°C was approximately 20 mm/yr.INTRODUCTIONTitanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments because of the formation of a very chemically stable, highly adherent, and protective oxide film on its surface (Mitsuo et al., 2002). Because titanium is the only metal available at a reasonable cost that resists the high temperature corrosive slurries in many leaching processes, it is often chosen as autoclave liner material where it is subjected to severe conditions of acidity, temperature and pressure (Grauman and Say, 2000).A number of distinctly different hydrometallurgical processes for the pressure leaching of chalcopyrite have been developed and patented by various companies and they can be classified into low, medium and high temperature regimes (McDonald and Muir, 2007). For example, chalcopyrite concentrate may be processed at medium temperatures (115-175°C) and pressures of 800-2200 kPa (Dreisinger, D., 2006; Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The lixiviant may contain 20 to 55 g/L sulfuric acid, 8 to 12 g/L chloride ions, 10-25 g/L Cu2+ (Jones, 1995, 1997, 1999), and less than 1 g/L Fe3+ (Defreyne et al., 2005). The amount of these additions is determined by the grade of the ores and details are shown in Table 1."

"AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The AE alloy family exhibits remarkable combinations of properties when utilized as high pressure die castings. This performance relies on the fact that the rapid cooling rate resulting from the direct contact between the molten alloy and the steel die walls effectively refines the structure through rapid solidification. Furthermore, the rare earth additions modify the solidification pattern, dramatically reducing the solidification interval. A solid shell forms at temperatures exceeding 500C, reducing the tendency for die sticking and inverse segregation. As a result, the die castability is excellent, giving parts with a smooth and shiny surface. Unlike other magnesium die casting alloys developed to improve elevated temperature creep properties, AE alloys do not suffer from the commonly observed tendency to introduce brittleness. This feature is attributed to the fact that the massive magnesium- aluminium intermetallic phase is substituted by a finely dispersed lamellar structure of Al-RE intermetallics. The resulting combination of excellent elevated temperature properties and good ductility, as well as excellent corrosion resistance, means superiority of these alloys for demanding automotive engine and chassis applications.

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. "IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

Motivated by safety considerations, logistical issues, transportation cost savings, product diversification, and marketing preferences, several uranium producers are revisiting their business models and supply chain configuration and, instead of selling dried yellowcake to downstream refineries, they are moving to build in-house calcining facilities. Drying and calcining plants are relatively low-cost facilities to build and operate. The execution period of a typical yellowcake drying and calcining project is also relatively short and alternative construction methodologies, such as modularized solutions, are available. The drying and calcining technologies used for yellowcake are relatively mature, environmentally contained, and well supported by qualified vendors. The drying and calcining circuits also seamlessly integrate with upstream and downstream operations. These either produce a dried yellowcake or calcined U3O8 which are notably safer and easier to transport and market. This paper presents an overview of the recommended technology and project development considerations for yellowcake drying and calcining facilities.
