The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. For more than a decade, Hatch has used process and logistics models to assist Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) with capacity planning, debottlenecking, and optimization to help ensure design capability, capital effectiveness, and operational efficiency of the integrated production chain. Process models are used to optimize the physics-based aspects of the system, such as mass and energy balances, flow rates, yields, and equipment specifications. Dynamic logistics models are used to optimize how the various plant areas work together to achieve the desired ends and deal with such things as plant scheduling and synchronization strategies, sizing of buffers between processes, defining the required number of process and material handling units, and designing a plant layout that minimizes plant interferences and inefficiencies. The combined use of process models and logistics models enables the overall plant to be optimized from both a productivity and quality point of view, with each plant area working in harmony with one another to achieve targeted capacities and efficiencies. This paper describes the many benefits derived from such modeling efforts over the past 15 years for each of the major plant areas at RTFT: Beneficiation Plant, Smelter Plant, Steel Plant, UGS Plant, and Powder Plant (RTMP).

Underground tests of slusher cables at first might seem to be quite simple and inexpensive. They do, however, take a long time and give results that may be ambiguous and unreliable. Also, because underground test conditions are not exactly duplicable, tests carried out at different times or in different mines could not be compared. An attempt was made to develop a laboratory test method that would provide for all factors affecting slusher cable performance underground in such a way as to make it possible to achieve comparable results from different series of tests by exactly duplicating test conditions. Such a method should also make it possible to vary individual factors systematically in order to give a proper assessment of the effect of changing conditions on cable performance. A set of tests, comparing the same two types of cable both underground and in the laboratory, is described. TWO years ago, at the annual meeting of this Society, the writer presented a paper dealing with various aspects of the water problems existing in the Cape Breton coal-mining area. Much of that paper was of a theoretical nature, in that an attempt was made to get at the fundamental principles underlying the problems, in order to establish a sort of background against which future results could be laid. Up to that time, only Central power plant in Glace Bay had been under observation, and, since the work had been in progress only a year, it was recognized that there were strong possibilities that certain variations in procedure might have to be introduced as w; became better acquainted with our problem. We were by no means certain that we had covered all the facts of the case. The present paper will therefore be of the nature of a progress report, rather than a formal contribution to the Society. Subjects of a theoretical or academic nature will be avoided as far as possible, attention being confined chiefly to the results obtained during the past two years. In looking over the work with low-pressure boilers, there are certain general conclusions that can apparently be safely drawn. Wherever possible, proper operating conditions will be expressed in terms of appropriate units. Absence of corrosion in boilers where the alkalinity has been maintained within the pH range 11.0 to 11.4 forces one to the conclusion that these are safe working limits. Previous experience had shown that corrosion would occur if the alkalinity were much reduced. Higher alkalinities are un-necessary, more expensive, and are said to introduce the possibility of pitting. We made no attempt to obtain quantitative data in respect to pitting. It is said to occur at pH 12.0. Consequently, conditions of alkalinity were main-tained well below this figure. In the above paragraph, the pH range 11.0 to 11.4 applies to boiler waters which have received the lime and soda treatment. The general practice, when this treatment is employed, is to use 1.0 lb. lime to 7.0 lb. washing soda. At Central power plant, soda-ash is at present substituted for washing soda, the equivalent proportions being kept the same. But not all the plants are on the lime and soda treatment. At Waterford Lake, a 1: 1 mixture of soda-ash and trisodium phosphate is satisfactorily employed, and in Sydney Mines and at No. 3 power plant in Sydney, good results are being obtained at a somewhat greater cost with a commercial phosphate treatment.

Mining dilution is one of the most important factors affecting the economy of mining projects. Ore losses and dilution are present at all stages of mining and while several models can investigate the influence of dilution it is its quantification that poses the most serious challenge (Pakalnis et al., 1995). This paper introduces a methodology to quantify dilution factor in open pit mines. The proposed approach makes use of general mining software available in most mining companies. Therefore it is amenable to most mining operations and provides a readily available tool for understanding mining dilution for operators and consultants. To illustrate the methodology the author uses an example from a hypothetical mine. Dilution increases the operating costs in the mill by increasing the tonnage of material to be milled. In addition to its direct impact on short term income of a mine, dilution causes significant changes in other factors that on the long term reduce the overall value of the project. For example, it prolongs the mine life by reducing mill?s effective capacity. It also reduces the feed grade. In most cases, lower feed grade means lower mill recovery. Dilution also increases the cut-off grade which in turn reduces the overall ore utilization of a mine. In some cases, to take advantage of economies of scale, mining operations tend to plan for higher mining rates. Moving to a larger scale of operation means less selectivity, hence more dilution. This is true for all kind of deposits. High level and uncontrolled dilution may ultimately defeat the purpose of increasing production rates. If not impossible in theory it is nevertheless extremely difficult and expensive to eliminate dilution in practice. Some amount of dilution is practically unavoidable in most mining operations (Scoble and Moss, 1994). Although completely avoiding dilution may be impossible, we can measure and control it. By better understanding the root causes of the dilution and planning accordingly, it can be controlled and reduced. While we do our best to identify and calculate all the other cost items of a project, no matter how small, it is common to make general assumptions about dilution instead of quantifying it. It is common to assume a general dilution such as 5% for massive deposits and 10% for tabular shape deposits. While these figures may be a good starting point in early stages of mining studies, it does not take in to consideration the complexity of the problem. Dilution factor varies within a single mine for different benches and zones. This is due to changes we see in grade distribution and shape of ore body. It also varies based on commodity price. It is necessary to make sure that these variations are taken into account when designing or evaluating a mine. Dilution varies in different mines based on the deposit characteristics, operational aspects and economic cut-off grade. For instance, shape of the deposit, bench height, equipment size, and market conditions will have an impact on the level of dilution in a mine. It is paramount for mining projects to have a better understanding of dilution right from the beginning. In times like today, where mining operations must operate at peak efficiency, it is even more crucial to be able to calculate and have a better grasp of all the parameters influencing the economics of a project including dilution. In order to produce better project evaluations, dilution studies should be an integral part of any project.

"Coal from Hat Creek, B. C., has been successfully beneficiated to remove ash while retaining calorific value by a dry electrostatic separation process using a fluidized bed for triboelectrification. Two samples of Hat Creek coal used in the beneficiation experiments have been characterized particularly with respect to their mineral and clay content. The calorific value recovery exceeds the simple dry coal recovery because of the heat lost in altering the clay minerals of the ash fraction during burning. Recoveries and ash contents of the beneficiated coal are comparable to recoveries by water washing, but the dry process avoids the potential water pollution problems.IntroductionProposals have been made which suggest an interim Canadian coal production target for the end of the century which will require a four- to fivefold increase over the 1977 production. This implies a nominal annual growth rate of about 6070 to achieve a production rate of 115 to 140 million tonnes/year. Whether or not this target is realistic, it is becoming increasingly evident that coal must be utilized more fully on a world-wide basis. The crisis in Iran has provided the latest stimulus to renewed interest in Canadian coals for domestic use and export.The emerging new era of coal utilization for fuel and chemical feedstock will not, however, generally tolerate the level of coal technology which prevailed prior to the availability of abundant cheap oil and natural gas. Economic, environmental and resource management considerations will necessitate, for example, the use of improved methods of beneficiating coal. Continued development and application of conventional processes, principally aqueous, involving heavy media and cyclones will solve many of the problems. However, less conventional processes may be preferable or necessary in certain applications."

The power of PCA and PLS is illustrated on historical data from a grinding and flotation plant. Three hundred and fifty observations of forty-four process variables are used to show the capacity of these techniques for preliminary data analysis, classification of operating regimes, process monitoring, and process empirical modelling."

Nautilus Minerals Inc the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean mineral resources is today focused on the recovery of high grade copper-gold from in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization. These mineralized belts, analogous to land based volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) deposits are located near tectonic plate boundaries of the Western Pacific and around the world. Nautilus; first development project is Solwara 1 located in benign waters in Papua New Guinea. Since 2006 the company has completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit for a deep ocean mineral project and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of the first mineral extraction system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cutting removal systems will all be adapted at Solwara 1. Key contractors to the project have all been selected for their deepwater experience, creativity and determination to launch this new industry. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper gives an overview of the Solwara 1 development and describes the exploration and production technologies adapted for seafloor mineral extraction.

This paper deals with studies made in the field of the French research network PROMETHEREF. Several refractory castables are considered in this program. In the present paper, one of these materials is considered, it is a low cement castable based on andalusite aggregates. A particular attention is paid to microstructural changes during the first heating and on their effects on the high temperature mechanical behavior. Microstructural evolutions have been characterized by the way of dilatometry, scanning electron microcopy and X-ray diffraction. In-situ observations by environmental scanning electron microscopy gave complementary results on these high temperature microstructural changes. They deal with microcrack formation, phase changes, crystallization, liquid phase formation and sintering. By propagation of ultrasonic waves, high temperature continuous measurements of the Young's modulus have been made. Results confirm the existence of microstructural changes and allow to quantify the Young's modulus variations all along specific thermal cycles. High temperature four point bending tests and room temperature tensile tests were made in the same temperature range. Behavior evolutions could be found and interpreted with the help of previously mentioned results.

"The effectiveness of two this compounds for copper sulphide depression in molybdenite flotation has been examined with batch bench scale tests.Both thioglycollate and trithiocarbonate proved to be good depressants producing results similar to those f or cyanide and hydrosulphide. Ferrocyanide was ineffective on the samplematerial tested.The depressing effect of thioglycollate was readily reversed by an addition of xanthate.IntroductionThe separation of molybdenite from copper sulphide minerals has been practised for a long time(1,2). The predominant scheme is to depress the copper sulphides while capitalizing on the ready floatability of molybdenite to effect the separation. There are many recipes for depressing the copper minerals(3), among them the addition of sodium cyanide, particularly if the copper is present primarily as chalcopyrite; some form of sulphide whether as sodium sulphide, sodium hydrosulphide or phosphorous pentasulphide when there is a mixture of copper sulphides such as bornite, chalcocite and chalcopyrite; potassium ferro cyanide may be used when chalcocite is the principal copper sulphide; peroxide or hypochlorite; as well as heating in the presence of lime. There are different mechanisms by which these reagent s depress the copper sulphides. Sodium cyanide and the sulphide-producing compounds apparently reduce the potential of the copper sulphides to the point where they ar e rendered unfloatable by xanthates . Another study(4) showed that after cyanide addition, chalcopyrite was rendered un floatabl e until the REDOX potential (measured with a gold electrode with a saturated calomel reference) had become more positive than -250 mY. If the chalcopyrite pulp was conditioned after the cyanide addition the REDOX potential increased slowly, whereas if air was introduced during the conditioning the potential r ose much more rapidly. The difference in time to reach the desired level of - 250 mV was as much as 20 minutes' 25 minutes being required when air was absent but less than 5 minutes when air was admitted . These observation s demonstrate some of the problems encountered when using cyanide to depress sulphides such as chalcopyrite . The system adjusts to counteract the depressing effect of the additive. To overcome this tendency it is necessary to either add an overdose at the beginning or to more or less continuously add the regulating reagent. In this study cyanide solution was added under automatic control to maintain a specified REDOX potential."

Coal is an important fuel for energy generation, and since there are no adequate alternatives it will also be for the next decades. The deep lying hard coal is important in particular because of its high energy content. Automation of underground mining has led to major improvements in productivity and safety. A fully mechanized longwall shearer workface has already reached a high degree of automation and provides a high productivity for example utilizing the memory cut. Current researches and developments in longwall mining are focused on extending this method by adaptive cutting drum height adjustment. The so-called horizon control is often based on memory cut methods. Horizon control in this way requires information of the environment, which can be provided by models (seam model, cut model) and coal interface detection (CID). Available CID systems only provide an optimal output under specific conditions. The authors propose the shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC) system as an alternative approach. SDHC does not require information from a CID system or an environmental model. All necessary information is provided by roof supports, shearer and process monitoring. The SDHC system was tested in simulation under different seam conditions and yielded promising results which will be presented in this paper. In cooperation with the German mining company RAG the SDHC has already reached an experimental stage. A test assembly was built up at the surface and the SDHC system was implemented on real mining equipment. To make the test scenario as realistic as possible, the SDHC system was only connected to the monitoring system, not to the simulation model. The aim of these tests was to establish the cooperation between all subsystems, find appropriate controller parameters, locate and address safety critical aspects and finally to achieve an automatic cutting drum height adjustment. An introduction of SDHC for shearer guidance is given in this paper. The experimental tests are described and the control results of the realized SDHC system on the test assembly are shown.

This paper describes the trends in recent years in explosives formulated to produce larger blast-hole spacings and over-all lower drilling and blasting costs in hard formations. A consideration of current rotary drilling costs per ft of hole and per ton of muck versus hole diameter indicates that it is now possible that we shall see much further use of lower-energy-content, lower-cost slurries and dry mixes, and larger-diameter and, in many instances, cheaper blast holes. These will be drilled on current or slightly larger blast patterns to yield the same energy input per ton of rock and similar fragmentation at lower costs.

"HistoryMining of the Schefferville iron deposits began in 1954 on completion of the 357 mile railway linking the mines and the St-Lawrence river port of Sept-Iles. Apart from crushing, no treatment of these ores was required before smelting. In the late 1950's, testwork began at schefferville to develop a process for upgrading the extensive lower grade deposits containing 51% iron with 15% silica (natural analysis). Engineering for a six million ton per year beneficiation plant using cationic silica flotation and the A-C grate kiln Began in 1970 and the first pellets were produced in mid-1973.Production requirements and operating difficulties have restricted capacity to approximately 85% of design but on going improvements are being made continuously to attain design capacity.GeologyThe sedimentary ore bodies of the labrador trough occur in a belt 5 to 10 miles wide and 60 miles long and contain 51 individual deposits varying in size from 1 and 60 million tons. The ores are classified into three main color groups."

"Rare earth (RE) elements are essential components of emerging green technologies. The increase in demand for these applications have driven the search and development of new rare earth deposits such as the Niobec project in Quebec, Canada. This deposit consists primarily of dolomite with significant amount of RE minerals bastnäsite and monazite, the primary sources of RE elements. Due to the minerals’ fine liberation sizes, flotation is commonly used as a concentration method. To develop an efficient process, the electrokinetic properties of the minerals must be understood. In this study, the surface properties of bastnäsite, monazite (RE minerals) and dolomite (a common gangue mineral) were investigated by zeta potential measurements. These measurements are affected by various ions present in solution; for bastnäsite, monazite and dolomite, some of these ions are H+, OH-, PO43- and CO32-. Dolomite, being a sparingly soluble mineral and a primary component of the ore, may be the greatest contributor of these ions in solution in the form of CO32- ions. Thus, different sources of CO32- ions (from dolomite dissolution and from Na2CO3) were investigated. The research work aims at elucidating how these reagents may influence the minerals’ surfaces. The results have shown that dolomite supernatant and sodium carbonate greatly affect the electrokinetic properties of each minerals. The addition of dolomite supernatant have resulted to relatively similar zeta potential of the minerals; while, sodium carbonate have affected them differently. These observations could be useful in efficient flotation of bastnäsite and/or monazite from bastnäsite-monazite-dolomite system.INTRODUCTIONThe increase in the demand for rare earth (RE) elements has driven the search and development of new deposits. Out of 53 rare earth projects in the world, 19 can be found in Canada (Hatch, 2015). These include the Niobec project of Magris Resources Company in Quebec. This deposit contains a significant amount of rare earth minerals (such as bastnäsite and monazite), with carbonates (such as dolomite) as the primary gangue minerals."

The behavior of both transient and steady state creep of Al-4.5 wt% Cu and Al-4.5 wt% Cu-0.1 wt% In alloys was investigated using a constant stress where torsional oscillations of different frequencies and shear strain amplitudes were operated at various working temperatures. An augment in both transient and steady state creep rates was observed by increasing both frequency and shear strain amplitude of the applied oscillations. The mean values of the activation energy of both alloys for both creep stages were found to be equal to that quoted for dislocation intersection mechanism.

Structures and serpentinization patterns in the Thetford Mines peridotites are important characteristics indicating the necessary geological conditions which led to the development of chrysotile orebodies in Early Ordovician limes. These structures and serpentinization patterns are reviewed in this paper using the geology of LAB Chrysotile orebodies as a model. Structural aspects include parallel and transverse faults, parallel and transverse granite slabs, and orebodies, some of which trend clearly north-westward parallel to the accretionarymovement. Serpentinization patterns in the peridotite belt, particularly in the harzburgite, include primary pervasive mass serpentinization and secondary complete serpentinization. Listwaenites layers appeared along some faults and along some granite slabs as a result of hydrothermal alteration of the serpentine, following the emplacement of the devonian plutons to the south. These plutons as we/1 as other important lineaments, align with the structural pattern of Thetford Mines ophiolites. It is believed that these plutons are part of a heavy magma tic corridor resembling the Pilote-Mont-Louis corridor in the Gaspe (Doyon and Berger, 1997), and the Buchans' structure in Newfoundland (Hutchinson, 1984), both intersecting the Brompton-Baie Verte line.

This paper reviews the coal mining operations of The Canmore Mines, Limited, at Canmore, Alberta, paying particular attention to the use of this coal by the metallurgical and chemical industries. The characteristics of the deposits are outlined, and the mining and processing methods used are discussed. Introduction M INING in the Cascade coal area of Alberta began form-ally in 1886 when the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company was granted its charter. Earlier operations had been confined to prospecting and family-type enterprises serving the market area within barging distance on the Bow river. From 1886 to 1964, seven mines were opened between Banff and Ribbon Creek; six of these have since been abandoned, leaving the B c 0 L. original tenant, under the name of The Canmore Mines, Limited, as the sole survivor. The town of Canmore, hub of the mining ventures, is located on the main line of the C.P.R. and on the Trans-Canada Highway, 67 rail miles west of Calgary and 57 4 miles east of Vancouver, as shown in Figure 1.
