This paper will first give a short overview of the Copper Mountain project in British Columbia, which just has started commercial operation earlier this year. The grinding process with one 34' x 20' SAG mill and two 24' x 39.5' ball mills will be briefly discussed. All three mills are gear driven by a ring gear, dual pinion and two low speed synchronous motors. Copper Mountain has installed on all three mills, the new state-of-the art dual pinion mill drives. All the inherent operation and maintenance features of this drive technology will be discussed, as well as the advantage of having variable speed control also on the ball mills. The installation and commissioning of the mills and drives at Copper Mountain will be briefly reviewed. Finally the first field measurements on these low speed mill drives will be presented, with the main focus on the low mechanical stress impact of these mill drives on the pinion and ring gear, as well as the accuracy of the load sharing between the two motors.

The copper I SAS MELT? process is a submerged lance bath smelting technology. In the 20 years since the process was first demonstrated on a semicommercial scale at Mount Isa in north-west Queensland, Australia, copper ISASMELT? plants have been constructed to treat concentrates or secondary raw materials around the world. The process is operating in smelters in Australia, the USA, Belgium, India, Germany, China and Zambia. ISASMELT? plants have been installed to improve the environmental performance of operating smelters and reduce costs for smelting companies. A new copper furnace is being commissioned at Southern Peru Copper Corporation in early 2007, while more furnaces are under design for installation in Kazakhstan and Peru. Copper ISASMEL T? plants are supplied as complete technology packages including engineering design services for the furnace and key ancillaries, supply of core equipment, provision of intensive training programs in operating plant environments and commissioning assistance services. The proven technology transfer process ensures successful implementation of submerged lance bath smelting into large scale plants. This paper summarises developments at recently constructed copper ISASMELT? plants.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. "This paper presents the geographic and geological setting of Saskatchewan Power Corporation's Poplar River Mine in south-central Saskatchewan, about 8 miles from the U.S. border. Generally the mine, which is being expanded to four million tons per year, is in an extremely disturbed geological area with severe dewatering problems. The lignite coal, which is strip mined, is supplied directly to an electric power generating station by means of a 7-mile unit-train private railroad.A number of unique reclamation and socio-economic problems were encountered because of the proximity to the U.S. border and because of the lack of experience of the regulatory authorities in projects of this kind. These are described in some detail, as well as the performance of one of the largest draglines in Canada. IntroductionThe Saskatchewan Power Corporation is a publicly owned utility which has the franchise to supply electricity and natural gas to all customers within the boundaries of Saskatchewan.Saskatchewan is a province which can almost be divided in two: the populated southern portion, principally devoted to farming, and the northern portion which is mostly on the Precambrian Shield and consists of lakes, rocks and muskeg. This portion is largely uninhabited except for a number of small villages. However, in the last few years there has been considerable mineral exploration and development, notably for uranium. This has helped considerably in the diversification of the basic agricultural economy of the province.Saskatchewan consists of 251,700 square miles, 761 miles north to south and an average of 335 miles east to west. It has a population of approximately 960,000, giving a population density of four persons per square mile. The Saskatchewan Power Corporation supplies 357,249 electrical arid 221,378 natural gas customers."

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. Evidently, a move towards green chemistry can only take place by identifying substitute molecules offering potential advantages in terms of recovery and grade."

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. "Concentrate drying at the Sullivan Concentrator goes back to 1937 when the original coal-fired dryer was put into operation. This was a second hand 8' dia. x 56' long Struthers-Wells rotary dryer that came from the phosphate plant in Warfield, B.C.In 1962, replacement of the old dryer was seriously considered. The shell and the auxiliary drive mechanism were badly worn and needed replacing. In April 1963, the new 8' dia. x 65' long fuel oil-fired Struthers-Wells dryer went in operation at an installed cost of $174,000.In 1965, it was apparent that a major rebuilding of the dust collecting system would have to be done. A study was carried out and a Ducon Dynamic Gas Scrubber was installed. The system went in operation in November 1966 and has fully met expectations.In the same year, the zinc dryer was converted from fuel oil to natural gas. "Areas of bubble contact were delineated for cassiterite in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH, and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique.Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 4.7, in the presence of chloride ion, and fluoride ion showed only a weak response in the same pH range. These anions are considered to act as indifferent electrolytes. Activation at pH values below the p.z.c. was obtained with sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions; the greatest response was by oxalate and phosphate ions extending pick-up to between pH 2.0 and 2.5.Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to the formation of very stable metal ion species, thought to be formed on the surface of cassiterite, between exposed stannic ions and modifying anions; dodecylammonium ions being absorbed on the surface so modified."

"At the start of a new shaft project, a specific number of ground investigations are performed. However, it is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize discrepancies and to include a monitoring system in the shaft design to collect sufficient data. The paper presents an overview of existing monitoring techniques and discusses future works required to improve, not only the construction during shaft sinking, but also the lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION In most cases, the investigations performed at the start of a new shaft are based on the analysis of rock and soil probes obtained from boreholes. In practice, such analysis performed on a single core often leads to different results when conducted by various experts. The discrepancy in core analysis influences further rock mass assessment and design assumptions. It is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones, which affects the estimated stress and strain state of the shaft lining. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize such discrepancy and to include into the shaft design a monitoring system to collect sufficient data, which enables control of important phenomena, not only during shaft sinking but also during the life of the shaft. Furthermore, the information collected during shaft sinking, while it is important for proper shaft lining design and updates to the shaft lining due to the local mining and geological conditions, it is also important after shaft sinking. In the whole shaft lifetime, it is not uncommon that the shaft lining is damaged and the liner needs to be renewed (Figure 1) due to various reasons. For this purpose, detailed information collected during construction can be extremely important."

"The hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance, such as, in beneficiation of iron ores, catalysis, and geochemical processes. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of this surface, which forms the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. In this work, the hydroxylated hematite (0001) surface was modeled using density functional theory (DFT). The computed planar relaxations are consistent with X-Ray crystal truncation rod diffraction results reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that only one type of surface, that is, the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R is stable under aqueous conditions, as the relaxations for the second type of termination: (OH)3-Fe-Fe-R do not match quantitatively with experiments suggesting that its coexistence with the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R surface is unlikely. A detailed analysis of this surface shows that two of the three (OH) groups are not connected to the Fe surface atom. Instead, they form H2O molecules by combining with the H-atoms on the O-layer beneath the Fe-terminated surface leaving the Fe surface-atom bonded to only one OH-group. This undercoordination of Fe-atoms on the surface explains its higher reactivity as compared to hydroxylated alumina.INTRODUCTIONThe hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of the hematite surface, which form the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, this is an important problem, as a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. Our current research focus is at employing molecular modeling techniques to come up with such selective reagents and then test their efficacy in the practical scenario through selective dispersion – flocculation labscale experiments and subsequently plant trials. Obviously, the correct structure and composition of the hydroxylated hematite surface is a fundamental prerequisite for such investigations."

In open pit mining, each small mining unit (SMU) is selected for mill processing based on an estimate of its true grade. The estimation is usually done using analyses of cuttings from blast holes within that SMU. One common estimator used for selection is the arithmetic average of within-SMU samples. This estimator is conditionally biased. The effect of a conditional bias is to overestimate the profit really recovered from the deposit. For this reason, a conditionally unbiased estimator is preferable. Increasing the number of samples generally improves the accuracy of the estimation (and diminishes the conditional bias, if present, of most estimators). However, there exists a practical limit where an additional sample does not improve the estimation sufficiently to cover the expense of making the analysis. This limit is specific to each deposit and depends on geostatistical parameters, economic factors, and mining parameters. This study examines how the number of samples affects the recovered reserves and the resulting profit. Also, the effects on optimal profit of varying the different factors are examined. Globally, the number of samples required increases with the selectivity of the operation. For a given ore deposit, the greater the number of SMUs selected for processing, the fewer samples are required and vice-versa.

Corrosion behavior of the stir zone in a friction stir weld of dissimilar A12024/AZ31 alloys was investigated in the immersion test in distilled water (pH=6) for different times. Microstructures and the distribution of chemical elements were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Due to the difference in the corrosion potentials between A12024 and AZ31, the AZ31 alloy constituent in the stir zone was susceptible to the corrosion attack in the distilled water. The corrosion attack was found to occur in the narrow region of the AZ31 alloy adjoining the A12024 region, where there was a low ratio of anode-to-cathode surface area. The corrosion attack became more severe in the AZ31 alloy regions with increasing immersion time. The A12024 alloy region in the stir zone of the weld was protected by cathodic reactivity due to sacrificial anode AZ31 alloy.

The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. It separates the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the Atlantic Ocean, except for the 12 mile wide

Introduction When one thinks of a coal stripping deposit, the picture that usually comes to mind is that of a more or less flat seam from two to twenty feet in thickness overlain by ten to fifty feet of overburden, in suitable ratio for economic operation. This is the usual type of stripping deposit and is quite a common occurrence in various parts of the prairie provinces. Rather unusual types of coal stripping deposits are being presently worked as open-cut mines by Sterling Collieries, Limited, and the Co al Valley Mining Company, Limited, at Miles 47 and 48 on the Alberta Coal Branch, some 150 miles south west of Edmonton. These deposits are of interest chiefly because they represent turned-up and greatly thickened sections of the Mynheer seam, and as such they present their own problems, peculiar to the commercial exploitation of a seam of this type. The area in which these deposits occur was originally owned by the Pacific Pass Collieries, whose operations, however, were confined to under-ground mining at Lovett, some eight miles to the southeast. It was not until l918 that the value of these deposits was realized, when the Company now known as Sterling Collieries, Limited, opened their pit at Mile 47. At the inception of the work, coal was loaded directly into the railway cars by men using wheelbarrows. In 1920, a tipple was built, after which the coal was loaded by steam shovel into mine cars, hauled by steam dinkeys, and loaded over the tipple into railway cars. In 1922, the Coal Valley Mining Company entered the field at Mile 48, with an entirely mechanical equipment, and at the present rime these two are the only stripping properties in Alberta using mechanical equipment both for the removal of overburden and the loading of the coal. These Companies have operated continuously since that time, and have to date mined and shipped 4,000,000 tons of coal, and moved some 5,255,000 cubic yards of stripping. The present annual coal output for the two mines is about 240,000 tons.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

Introduction The manufacture of ductile beryllium is one of the most interesting problems confronting the metallurgist today, and one which becomes more acutely in need of resolution as the uses for beryllium increase. Beryllium belongs to the hexagonal group of metals along with zinc, magnesium, and cadmium. The melting point of the metal is about l,280°C. ± 5°C. Due to its brittleness, the metal's chief use is as an alloying agent in copper and iron. The very low absorption coefficient of beryllium for x-rays makes the metal ideal for x-ray windows, and, similarly, because of its low capture cross-section for neutrons, the metal holds a preferred position in the field of nuclear physics. Modern x-ray diffraction methods were responsible for explaining the mechanism whereby zinc metal, although brittle when cast, could be made ductile at room temperature. The diffraction patterns of zinc and magnesium indicated the importance of the parts played by recrystallization and preferred orientation in this mechanism. It was with this in mind that an Investigation into the recrystallization and preferred orientation of beryllium was undertaken. The investigation, after a series of experiments were conducted involving cold-working and annealing, yielded the recrystallization temperature curve for beryllium. Both the texture of preferred orientation and the effect of recrystallization on this texture when subjected to compressive stresses were also determined. W. A. Alexander, J. K. Swinton and L. M. Pidgeon, in their investigation on The Recrystallization Temperature of Beryllium (C.I.M., Trans., Vol. L, 1947, pp. 657-664), utilized the Brinell ball as a means of cold straining the metal. Sufficient strain was developed to estimate the recrystallization curve for the metal. However, in order to determine the lowest recrystallization curve, as well as to develop a preferred orientation structure, larger deformation than that possible with a Brinell ball was required. The plastic deformation of beryllium can be carried out at an elevated temperature above 700°C. Above 850°C., the metal is quite ductile and can be readily compressed or extruded.

"Talc ore from Bakertalc, High water, Quebec analyzing about 60% talc, previously dry ground to about 95% minus 53 µm was beneficiated in an 11.4 kg/ h pilot-plant flotation circuit. A concentrate of 95.9% talc (necessary for paper-grade) was obtained at a recovery at 75.3% by employing 53 g/t of Dowfroth 250 collector at pH 9.2; further cleaning increased the grade to 97.2% talc at a recovery of 57.5%.Flotation of fresh ground 60% minus 44 µm ore at a feed rate of 18.6 kg/ h produced a grade of 96.4% talc with a recovery of 78.2%, using Aerofroth 70 collector a six carbon-branch chain alcohol, at pH 9.2.The similarity in the concentrate grade and recovery between pre-ground and fresh-ground ore indicated that it was not neces¬sary to grind to 95% minus 53/2m to achieve comparable selectivity. A grind of 60% minus 44 pm corresponds to 100% minus 300 µm.Flotation retention times obtained with fresh ground ore indicate 33 min. for combined rougher/scavenger, and 15 min. each for the first and second cleaners.Talc-magnesite flotation separation is explained in terms of physico-chemical forces, with reference to surface charge and adsorption mechanisms."

Highland Valley Copper is a large, open-pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Reclamation has been in progress on the site since 1987. Some 6,300 hectares will have been disturbed at the end of the mine?s life, the majority of which will eventually be reclaimed. The establishment of vegetation and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover are the central components of the mine?s reclamation plan. The present vegetation-monitoring program for the reclaimed area represents a significant commitment of resources and only addresses a small portion of the site each year. In an effort to expand the area surveyed while improving the efficiency of the monitoring, the use of remote sensing is being investigated. Airborne multispectral imagery was acquired in the summer of 2001, and the results of the multispectral classification were compared to ground observations made during the routine 2000 and 2001 monitoring program. A thematic map with 17 vegetation classes was produced. Within the vegetation classes, there was a strong spectral separation between ? dry grasses? and ?legumes? with further separation according to their density. Green biomass could also be quantified remotely across a wide variety of vegetation types. During summer 2002, further aerial imagery was acquired in combination with a targeted ground-truthing program to determine characteristic vegetation types associated with recognized spectral signatures, which can be used in a supervised classification. It is anticipated that after some fine-tuning, it will be possible to shift the ground-sampling effort from areas where the aerial classification confidence is high to more complex areas.

Key issues in managing information systems in the minerals industry will likely continue to be those relating to the integration and interoperability of disparate systems. This paper argues that, in order to harness the promised benefits of information technologies, the mining industry should adopt a set of open systems standards to define data formats and protocols for seamless data exchange. This is in direct contrast to the present situation where mining equipment, software and instrument suppliers rigidly adhere to proprietary standards for fear of losing competitive advantage. Benefits to the mining sector resulting from the adoption of such standards would be: the provision of near-time data for executive decision support, and the freedom to choose best technologies. The principal benefits to the leading mining software suppliers will be increased market share as a result of “captive sites” converting to open systems standards. Examples are given of open systems standards developed for related industries such as the Petroleum Open Systems Corporation (POSC) and the Machinery Information Management Open Systems Alliance (MIMOSA).

A leaching treatment was investigated to recover metals including rare earths from the mixtures of hydrogen storage alloys and nickel hydroxide. A potential-pH diagram of the La-Ni-H20 system including the domain of stability of LaNi5 was drawn to find appropriate leaching conditions. Alkaline solutions containing ligands that form complexes with nickel ions were supposed to be available to separate hydrogen storage alloys from the mixture. When the mixture was leached with ammoniacal alkaline aqueous solutions, the nickel hydroxide was dissolved and the hydrogen storage alloy was recovered as its original alloy.
