High-capacity, post-tensioned anchors have found wide-spread use in initial dam design and construction, and in the strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete dams to meet modern design and safety standards. Despite the advances that have been made in rock mechanics and rock engineering during the almost 80 years in which post-tensioned anchors have been used in dam engineering, some aspects of the rock engineering design of high-capacity rock anchors for dams have changed relatively little over the last 30 or 40 years. This applies, in particular, to the calculations usually carried out to establish the grouted embedment lengths required for deep, post-tensioned anchors. These calculations which involve a number of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties, usually make simplified assumptions about the distribution and values of rock-grout interface shear strengths, the shape of the volume of rock likely to be involved in uplift failure under the influence of a system of post-tensioned anchors, and the mechanism of that failure. The resulting designs are generally conservative. These aspects of the rock engineering design of large, post-tensioned rock anchors for dams could be improved by making greater use of modern, comprehensive, numerical analyses in conjunction with 3D models of the rock mass structure, realistic rock and rock mass properties, and the results of prototype anchor tests in the rock mass concerned.

The writer presents a concise summary of eleven recent discoveries made in the Maritime Appalachian area, with suggestions for fur the research. This information may prove helpful to geologists working in other fields and to students contemplating further avenues of research in mining geology and exploration. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is not intended as a research study on the subject, but i. merely a brief review of eleven discoveries that have been made in the Canadian Appalachian area. Furthermore, this is not a critical analysis of the merits of any one geophysical method, but it is an un-prejudiced observation of how these discoveries were actually made and what techniques were apparently most fruitful. Some generalizations are attempted whicl1 may suggest further avenues of research in the field of mining exploration. The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Copper Refinery optimizes electrolyte quality using a number of systems. The facility controls copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth using electro-winning cells within the Tank House and Nickel Carbonate Plant Liberator Circuit (NCP). The NCP manages sulfuric acid content utilizing recycled electrolyte in the slimes autoclave as well as operation of the Acid Purification Unit, APU. The El Paso Refinery removes common sulfates using metal hydrolysis with sodium carbonate. Finally, a Mechanical Vapor Recompression, (MVR), at the water recovery plant removes sodium sulfate generated by the NCP. This paper will provide a summary of these operations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s Nichols Copper Company, in Laurel Hill, New York, recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Because of the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the ideal location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Water is a precious commodity in the desert southwest, making conservation of this natural resource an important goal for the El Paso Operations. In the 1980’s, work on the treatment of slimes was improved through the use of pressure leaching of the refinery slimes using an autoclave. Due to the high tellurium content in the leached slimes solution, it was crucial to implement a method for its removal before the solution returns to the tank house electrolyte. A copper telluride cementation operation was installed for tellurium recovery and the ability for the recycle of the leachate and wash water to the refinery electrolyte. In October of 1997, ground was broken for the construction of the water recovery plant using an MVR to reuse process water, reducing water consumption by 25%. In 2002, electrolyte purification was further improved with the installation of an Acid Purification Unit, (APU) (Sheedy, Pajunen, & Wesstrom, 2007). The APU recycles 90% of the acids (both sulfuric and arsenic acids) back to the tank house electrolyte. The solution that passes through the APU is treated with soda ash to precipitate metals out of solution as carbonates and generates a sodium sulfate solution. This sodium sulfate solution is easily processed in the new water recovery plant, where the majority of the water recycles back into the plant as pure condensate. In 2012, the power plant at the refinery upgraded its Reverse Osmosis System to provide RO water to the tankhouse. This insured that the refinery would not have to bleed electrolyte for metals contained in well water such as: calcium, magnesium, iron and sodium chloride.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

Slope problems arise on mining properties from cuts for roads and railroads and from open pits. When it is 'realized that 1,000,000 extra tons of waste may have to be mined as a result of an average slope being reduced by 1 ° it is easy to appreciate that the slope problems connected with open pits are of far greater importance than the others. The type of slope failure that can occur can be classified in different ways. The most useful classification would be one that separates the causes in such a way as to provide a basis for studies to deal with problems of prevention and control. Using this criterion the types of slope failures are classified into four groups. Having classified the problems in this way an understanding can be gained of the various mechanisms involved in failure ..

MR.]. G. TRAILL: My only excuse for contributing to the discussion on Mr. Hall's interesting paper is that I had the good fortune to be employed at Noranda during those romantic years, 1927 and 1928, when construction was at its height. The mine was in course of being rapidly prepared and brought into production, and the initial difficulties in crushing-plant and smelter were being met and overcome. They were stirring days, and perhaps those members who were with the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1927 sensed the atmosphere of excitement and activity that prevailed. Early History. Noranda must surely possess some of the most remarkable ore-bodies known to mining men, and the story of their development is pure romance. Ed. Horne's faith in the property, and the persistence of Thomson and Chadbourne, were richly rewarded in the end, but only after some very thin times had been experienced. In those early days access to the district was by the Kenojevis river and various portages to Osisko lake, on the shores of which the mine and smelter and the town of Noranda now stand. But all the early work was done on the Chadbourne claims, more than a mile to the west; through the b~sh. I have read a log of the events of that period, and through the whole tale of hard work, discouraging developments, occasional shortages of food, and constant danger from forest fires, can be read the faith and persistence of the men in charge. The Chadbourne ore was of that well-known type which, though just too low-grade to pay (with gold at $20 per ounce), is yet sufficiently encouraging to lead one on in the hope of striking something better. It was only as a last resort that work on the Chadbourne claims was suspended and a diamond drill brought to the gossan-covered hill beside the lake. The diamond-driller told me his version (it may be exaggerated) of how the position and direction of the first hole were decided on. He was told, "You might as well set up your drill here, and drill in, say, that direction". I believe that the first hole went through the richest ore ever found at Noranda. After the drill had gone through about 150 feet of solid sulphide ore running 17 per cent copper and 4 dwt. of gold per ton, it passed into barren rock, but the diamond-driller expressed the opinion (I wonder how he knew)) that the hole would come into ore again before long.

SAMPLING of an ore-body is one of the fundamentals in its exploration, development, and exploitation. It is carried out to determine the gold value per ton of an ore-shoot and the probable gold output of the refinery. Sampling also places any broken ground in one of two classes, ore or waste. The value and importance of correct sampling has been shown repeatedly in the past. On the other hand, instances could be given where those in charge of mines have not believed in sampling, and the result has been the same in every case-disaster. This has in all probability been due to assuming that good-looking, well-mineralized rock was ore. Sampling in some form might have averted this misfortune. In this essay, only the method of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves is treated. All titles, figures, and values are fictitious. None of the illustrations can be directly applied to any portion of the Hollinger mine, except Figures 1 and 2, which are included with the special permission of the Canadian Mining Journal. METHODS OF SAMPLING Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, has, from the very beginning of operations, carried out an extensive system of sampling, and the results of this sampling have completely governed the whole mining programme. The Hollinger discovery was made in 1909 and prospecting and exploration of 'the surface began at once. Four men were given jobs as samplers and they sampled thoroughly all the outcrops and all bed-rock which could be exposed to view by removing the overburden. When shaft sinking began, samples were taken at two-foot intervals. In 1912, an underground gang of six samplers was organized, and the number was increased at a rate of about two men per year as the size and extent of the workings grew. No permanent record of sampling was kept until 1919, in which year an average of 11.6 men took 28,458 samples, cutting 113,894 feet of sample. From that time until the end of 1934, the average number of samplers varied, but the total number of samples cut, and the total footage sampled, increased.

"This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

This paper details a brief history of the Australian gold industry from the 1980s gold boom to the present day, highlighting an industry characterised by innovation in plant design and junior companies prepared to "have a go", in contrast to the conservatism of many larger mining companies. Design flexibility, the innovation of new processes, the preparedness to exchange "process know how" and technology singularly differentiated the gold industry from other sectors during the 1980s to the present. The introduction of two stage crushing, semi autogenous (SAG) milling, and pebble crushing, mill innovations, carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) and the North Kalgoorlie screen etc were all exciting changes in the industry.

"Risk, the product of probability and consequence, is an integral part of mining. Whether evaluating exploration priorities, determining property acquisition potential, reviewing the components of an operating mine or assessing environmental/closure issues, the concept of minimizing risk is central to economic and technically appropriate decision making.Until recently, risk evaluations have tended toward a strongly mathematical basis. With this previous trend, it was essential to establish precise probability density functions to all assessed components or issues where often little information was available. The combined effect of the seemingly complex analyses with corresponding insufficient data often resulted in either a poorly executed risk evaluation or no evaluation whatsoever; either result not acceptable for optimal decision making. This paper presents a simple and practical procedure to carry out risk assessments for the mining industry. Although simplistic in nature, the power and usefulness of the technique is immense. The basis for the procedure involves combining deterministic assessments (often “gut feel”) with appropriate probabilistic descriptors. The resulting procedure, termed Potential Problem Analyses, or PPA, can be used anywhere an evaluation of risk will assist in optimizing technical and/or economic decisions. As will be shown, a key element of the PPA procedure is the multi-disciplinary input the framework allows which makes the method ideal for a teamwork approach to decision making."

"The great interest taken in uranium in Canada during the past few years has resulted in the discovery of a very large number of occurrences, and in much research that has added to the knowledge of the mineralogy and geology of uranium deposits. The object of this paper is to present that information in condensed form. Some of it has been published before, but the writer has been asked to bring it together and to add more recent, unpublished data. The paper therefore contains short accounts of the mineralogy of uranium and of the types and distribution of occurrences; brief regional descriptions, including information on some of the characteristic deposits; and conclusions regarding prospecting and development possibilities.The writer has access to much confidential information supplied in compliance with regulations of the Atomic Energy Control Board. He has used this only for making broad generalizations that could not affect individual interests, and only where the owners of properties have agreed to its use.Much of the information on mineralogy and geology is derived from the work of others. The Jinfeng gold mine is one of the three gold mines that Eldorado Gold has in China and it is the second largest gold mine in China. The mine is located in a relatively remote and mountainous area in the southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is similar to the Carlin type deposit in Nevada. The mill throughput was designed to treat 3,600 tones per day. The ore comes from open pit mining and underground mining, and is fed to one-stage jaw crushing. The crushed ore is stockpiled, reclaimed and then fed to the SABC grinding circuit. After classification with hydrocylones, the ore is floated, and the resultant concentrate is oxidized biologically in a process known as BIOX®. The oxidized concentrate is then washed in a CCD circuit and finally leached with cyanide in a CIL circuit for gold extraction. Jinfeng produces about 180,000 oz of gold per year. This paper introduces operations and modifications of SABC circuit over the past three years, and then describes some technical characteristic of the SAG mill and other circuits in the processing plant. Major modifications and improvements on the SABC circuit are described in the paper, including: 1. Impacts of grinding ball and mill liner with respect to material selection, quality, hardness, manufacturing methods, and interactions between mill liner and grinding ball. 2. Effect of milling operation parameters on milling efficiency. 3. Impacts of SAG mill scats and modifications of grate size to improve mill throughput. 4. Design and construction of a pebble crushing system, and recycle the crushed scats to the SAG mill to improve mill throughput. With the above-mentioned modifications, 20% increase over the design in mill throughput has been realized over the past three years, and operating cost has been significantly reduced. However, some issues still remain, and thus process modifications and technical innovations are still needed.

Terrestrial heat flow has been determined for four boreholes in the Montreal area. The mean value of the results (uncorrected for glacial effects) is 0.790 ± 0.053 x 10-6 cal/ cm2/sec (95 per cent confidence limits). Thermal gradients were determined using a thermistor probe and d-c bridge, and also by a new method using a probe-contained phase-shift oscillator, the output frequency of the oscillator being a function of probe temperature. Thermal conductivity determinations were made on core from the boreholes, using a divided bar apparatus. INTRODUCTION T HIS paper concerns the terrestrial heat flow in the St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec, as determined from measurements on four of the numerous boreholes drilled in this region for gas and oil. "Peñasquito is a complex polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper and is one of the largest producers of gold in Mexico. Mining activity is currently transitioning to a second open pit, Chile Colorado, which will be mined concurrently with the existing open pit, Peñasco. The ore bodies are located within diatreme pipes and into the surrounding sediment formation. In the coming years, mining will be carried out in more sedimentary zones, which are significantly higher in organic carbon content. Organic carbon in the feed influences both flotation and leaching operations. Several changes are being implemented to the Peñasquito flowsheet to mitigate the effects of increased organic carbon in the plant feed. These include the use of alternate reagent schemes, construction of a carbon pre-flotation circuit, implementation of a pre-leach flotation circuit ahead of pyrite leach, and evaluation of a tertiary process for separation of carbon and precious metal minerals.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Peñasquito operation is located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, approximately 200 km from the city of Zacatecas in the Mazapil municipality (Figure 1). Peñasquito has been in operation since 2009, with mining carried out by open-pit methods. Oxide ore has been processed in a heap leach facility and sulfide ore is treated in the sulfide processing plant. The processing capacity of the sulfide plant is 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 production amounted to 465,000 ounces of gold, 17.6 million ounces of silver, 109 million lb of contained lead in lead concentrate, and 263 million lb of contained zinc in zinc concentrate (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). To recover more of the contained gold and silver and to mitigate the impact of increasing organic carbon content in the ore, a number of significant changes are being made to the operation."

Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb-xW (where x = 0, 0.5, and 1 at. %) powders were consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The consolidated samples were solution heat treated above the a-transus followed by stepped cooling to room temperature. Selected samples were subsequently aged at 950 °C for up to 72 hours. The post-heat treatment microstructure was examined by optical and electron microscopy. It was found that increasing holding time above the a-transus generated a more homogenous microstructure. Utilizing the stepped cooling sequence, especially with a transition temperature of 1270 °C, massively transformed gamma (Ym) was diminished. Aging caused coarsening of the fully lamellar microstructure in the 0%W and 0.5%W samples while almost no coarsening occurred in the 1 % W sample. Precipitates began to form during aging in samples containing W. The precipitates at the lamellar interfaces are fine and have a needle like shape, while precipitates at the lamellar grain boundaries are coarse and circular in shape. The size and number of the precipitates depend on aging time and the level ofW content.

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Proper fan design remains a major factor in reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), which means that there are compelling reasons for making use of comprehensive factory testing at full power before fans are dispatched to site to simulate the mine’s current and future design requirements, and thus verify the fan’s effectiveness in ‘real’ conditions.INTRODUCTION A primary mine fan is considered the heartbeat of the entire mine ventilation system, drawing fresh air from the surface and providing a safe environment for miners. A ventilation system’s lack of performance often leads to a reduction in acceptable air quality levels for underground working operations and can potentially have an adverse impact on production rates."

A significant portion of Outotec's business relates to the application of fluidized bed for processing a wide range of industrial materials, including gold ore and gold concentrate. As part of the former Lurgi and Boliden organization, our division constructed the first industrial reactor for roasting sulphur-bearing materials in 1950, based on the principles of fluidized bed technology. This process, when combined with efficient heat recovery and off-gas treatment and its conversion to sulphuric acid, became the standard for processing sulphur-bearing ores. In the last 60 years we have delivered more than 265 plants and developed (in addition to the standard fluidized bed solution) variants of the fluidization technology, such as the circulating fluidized bed and the bubbling fluidized bed. This paper describes the different options of the fluidized bed technology for gold roasting reflecting on main process design criteria.
