THE property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims located on McKenzie island in Red lake. The mine is about 4,Y:l miles by water from the Howey townsite on the same lake, and about 95 miles north of Kenora, Ont. (see Figure 4). Mail and express are flown-in daily, winter and summer, from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Kenora, and Winnipeg. All heavy supplies are freighted-in during the summer over a water route, using four marine railway portages, from Hudson, Ont., a distance of about 180 miles. During the winter, freighting over the same route is clone by tractor if necessary, but costs are three to four rimes the summer rate. Due to these conditions, large inventories of supplies must be kept on hand, varying from a spring minimum of $45,000 to a peak of $110,000 early in November. The average cost of all freight brought in from steel during 1937 was $0.01 per pound.

"AbstractA commercial method .has been developed for controlling the texture of chrysotile asbestos fibers so that they may possess properties comparable with natural sem1-harsh fibers for use in wet •processes.The physical properties of the soft, silky and slimy fibers are partially altered by a flash-heating process which removes a portion of the molecular water.The heat-treated fibers show an improvement in filterability, an increase in bulk, absorption, and surface area and better electrical properties, such as volume resistivity.IntroductionCHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS fibers are found in nature having varying degrees of texture, referred to as soft, semi-harsh, and harsh. Fibers of each type of texture have inherent characteristics which directly affect their usefulness to industry. Visual differences are apparent under a microscope where it is seen that the soft-textured fibers have a silky, serpentine or wavy appearance, whereas the harsh-textured fibers are coarser and spicular. Semi-harsh fibers, of course, have properties intermediate between these extremes.Fankuchen and Schneider ( l) have shown by the use of low-angle X-ray scattering that the diameter of the harsh type of chrysotile fiber is somewhat greater than tha of the soft variety. Surface area measurements on various chrysotiles of different textures tend to confirm their findings. By nitrogen adsorption methods, it was found that the surface areas of soft types of chrysotile asbestos are approximately 23M2 / g whereas for the harsh types they are as low as 11M2/g."

Both capital investment and energy conservation demand very high component reliability in such systems. The interactions among reliability, plant performance and economics will be discussed in relation to materials research and development. Likely materials requirements for the nuclear industry over the next twenty five years will also be discussed.

THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. "Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

"While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. Based on the analysis, an empirical formula was proposed to explain the relationship."

"The Port Radium leaching plant of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, produces 450 t./d. of sulphuric acid leach liquor containing l. 73 g. /I. U 308. After solvent extraction, the waste solution is discarded at 0.002 g./l. U30s for a recovery of 99.8 to 99.9 per cent. The solvent is acidified with weak sulphuric acid, loaded to 4.5 g./l. U80:1 in three-stage extraction, scrubbed with water, and stripped with soda-ash solution in single-stage stripping. Caustic removes the UaOs from the pregnant strip solution as a precipitate. The slurry is filtered, re-pulped with water, and re-filtered. The pressed precipitate at 81 to 82 per cent equivalent U30s is dried and packaged. The carbon-ate filtrate is cooled to remove sodium sulphate build-up and carbonated to convert excess caustic. Reagent consumptions are 4.1, 0.22, and 0.39 pounds per 1,000 gallons of pregnant solution for Diesel oil, amine, and alcohol, respectively. Caustic consumption averages 1.3 to 1.4 pounds per pound U3O8.Extraction and stripping is accomplished in sheet-iron mixer-settlers lined with Phenoline. Piping on both circuits is Schedule 80 polyvinyl chloride. Valves are straightway Buna N lined with American Hycar diaphagms. Extensive instrumentation ensures good metallurgy with a minimum of variations and labour. Mixing in a continuous organic medium and careful acidity control are required to minimize third-phase formations. Heating the precipitate slurry is conducive to good filtering in Perrin presses with neoprene-coated, rolled-steel sectors. Sodium sulphate is crystallized from carbonate filtrate solution by batchwise cooling to 54°F. with lake water."

Abstract The degree of cathodic protection of steel and the anode corrosion rate were determined when anodes and waters of different compositions were used at temperatures similar to those in domestic hot water tanks. Twenty different anode materials, sixteen of them magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloys, were immersed in six different synthetic waters resembling those to be found in various parts of Canada. The results showed that (1) both the degree of cathode protection and the average anode corrosion rate are affected materially by the composition of the anode material and of the water; (2) poor cathode protection is associated with low anode corrosion rate; (3) when the cathode is fully protected, the anode corrosion rate may be comparatively low or comparatively high, depending upon the composttion of the water; (4) an important relationship exists between the magnesium content of the preferred anode and the composition of the water; (5) the degree of protection is increased as the SO4 + Cl concentration of the water is increased and thus as its specific resistance is decreased. Introduction Fairly recently, the use of the active metal magnesium for the cathodic protection of less active metals has received a considerable amount of attention. This interest has been stimulated by the fact that the wartime demand for magnesium was greatly in excess of the present peacetime demand and there is a natural desire to continue operating the large magnesium plants which were built during the war. Information regarding the use of zinc and aluminium for this purpose also has been published. There is a great demand for domestic hot-water tanks which will resist corrosion satisfactorily. This problem is rather complex in view of the fact that the composition of the water used in such tanks varies greatly and depends upon the locality. The present investigation deals with the effect of water composition and anode composition on the cathodic protection of steel under conditions approaching those which exist in hot water tanks.

The composition of phosphate rocks, mainly used in manufacturing fertilizers, varies among deposits; therefore, phosphate rocks from different sources are expected to behave differently in acidulation processes. This paper examines the effect of preconcentration of phosphate ore from El-Sebaiya East, Egypt, using flotation on uranium leaching. A high-grade ore sample (27.3% P2O5, 168 mg/kg U) supplied by the Al-Nasr Mining Company, was subjected to reverse single-stage flotation to separate carbonate from the phosphate sample. Subsequently, P2O5 and U concentrations were 32.2% (92.1% recovery) and 225 mg/kg, respectively. After the leach process, the U concentration in the liquor was 319 mg/L.

"The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

Commercial tellurium commonly contains heavy basemetal impurities such as lead, copper, iron, etc., as well as selenium and oxygen. The base metals may be removed by vacuum distillation or by zone melting. Vacuum distillation is a convenient method for treating moderate quantities (~ 100 kg.) for the production of a material having a total content of heavy metals in the 10-30 ppm range. By zone melting, it is possible to lower all the heavy metal impurities tm below the limits of spectrographie detection. Neither vacuum distillation nor zone melting is effective for the removal of selenium, but treatment of molten tellurium with hydrogen converts selenium to hydrogen selenide. This procedure is too s low to be considered except as an adjunct to zone melting. In the course of air-melting, many of the more easily oxidized impurities form a dross and may thus be readily removed. Substantial refinement with respect to iron, tin, chromium, aluminum, sodium, silicon, magnesium, calcium and manganese can be achieved in this way. Although tellurium can be electrodeposited from either acid or alkaline solutions of the dioxide, various factors militate against successful electro-refining, amongst which may be mentioned the brittleness of cast tellurium anodes and the tendency for the metal to be deposited in dendritic form, even at low current densities.

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. New automated curing system for mass concrete has been developed to improve the quality of concrete structure and to save construction time and cost. The principle of this system is the automated water circulation system of heated curing water. Applied curing water on the surface of mass concrete keeps the temperature difference between center and surface of the structure below the threshold of specification. Mock-up test and field application have been conducted to investigate the performance of this system. In the results, new automated curing system reduced the chance of thermal crack occurrence and improved quality of the concrete structure as well.

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

"The Highmont copper-molybdenum deposits are at Gnawed Mountain in the Highland Valley porphyry copper district, 125 miles northeast of Vancouver. This district is near the center of the lower Jurassic Guichon Batholith, where a north-trending swarm of porphyry dikes is crossed by west-northwesterly structural belts in which fracturing, intrusion of porphyry and breccia, and mineralization areconcentrated.The Highmont deposits are 2 miles southeast of, and in the same southernmost structural belt as, the Lornex deposit. The main deposits occur on either side of a composite dike of granodiorite, porphyry and breccia which strikes west-northwestward in fractured quartz diorite. North of the dike, the adjacent Nos. 1 (East) and 2 (West) zones together contain 150 million tons of open-pit ore mineable in two separate pits. These two zones will support a 25,000-tpd mill with a grade in the first five years of approximately 0.46 per cent copper equivalent. South of the dike, the Nos. 3 and 4 zones are partly explored and will provide large additional reserves. In these various zones, chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite form disseminations and fracture-fillings accompanied by quartz, K-feldspar, tourmaline, sericite, specular hematite and other minerals. Bornite extends for varying distances north of the dike, beyond which chalcopyrite is locally accompanied by pyrite. Higher-grade mineralization tends to coincide with fracture swarms, or with shear zones and faults which largely parallel these swarms. The ore zones are reflected by geochemical soil anomalies which show some glacial dispersion. LP. surveys gave weak but significant responses, expressed as per cent frequency effect. The ore zones occur within a strong magnetic gradient, but do not show a significant magnetic response."

Ni-20Cr metallic coating was deposited on a Ni-based Superalloy (3Fe-19.5Cr¬0.3Ti-Balance Ni) by a shrouded plasma spray process; NiCrA1Y was used as a bond coat. Erosion studies were conducted on uncoated and plasma-spray coated superalloy specimens using an air-jet erosion test rig at a velocity of 40 m/s and impingement angles of 30° and 90°. The coating has been characterized for porosity, microhardness and microstructure and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). An electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) was used to obtain X-ray elemental mappings of the coating along the cross-section. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX attachment was used to analyze the eroded surfaces.

THERE is at the present time a revived interest in amalgamation, due to the number of mines starting up, usually on high-grade ore, and utilizing this relatively cheap and convenient means of recovering gold, more especially in their initial stages of production. The marked increased use of the amalgamation process has revealed a dearth of amalgamators and there is no doubt the art of amalgamation has stood still for a generation or two and is not readily applicable to the modern practice of milling gold ores. Mill operators of long experience are learning the art for the first time and are giving it intelligent study, and considerable testing and research work is now being undertaken Most millmen consider amalgamation a simple process, and so it is when we have a clean ore with coarse gold, specially when stamps are used for crushing. In treating Nova Scotia ores by stamps and amalgamation, recoveries of 95 to 97 per cent are common and easily obtained. So-called 'under-water feed' is almost universally used in Nova Scotia and is quite beneficial. The water is supplied through jets between the dies and below the die surface and maintains this space as a live trap which catches the gold particles before they are overground and spoilt for amalgamation. With this method, the portion of gold recovered in the battery is higher than usual and often amounts to 80 per cent of the total gold in the ore, the remaining 20 per cent being caught on the plate. As a continuous amalgamator, the simple plate cannot be excelled. Some of the modern devices having moving or covered and not very accessible plates, which cannot be readily inspected and dressed to keep them in condition, do not give the best results in service. An exception might be drawn in the case of amalgamation of very heavy ore or concentrate which would bank up unless the plate is carried at such a steep inclination as to weep mercury. Difficulties in stamp-mill amalgamation are encountered when acid water is used or when grease is present. Also, certain sulphides and graphitic and talcose ores give trouble, resulting in poor gold recovery and high mer-cury loss. The older literature on gold milling deals with the common troubles of this type and the old-time amalgamator was well able to take care of day-by-day difficulties. When the difficulties were unsurmountable, the ore was classed as 'refractory' and other processes were used.

A study of the settling and thickening of finely divided pulps was undertaken with the object of obtaining certain fundamental relationships, with resulting improvements in the design and operation of mechanical equipment. The subject has been treated in two parts: testing and batch thickening, and continuous thickening, including calculations of capacity and dimensions. Part 1. ? Testing and Batch Thickening The usual method of making thickening tests is to agitate the pulp with a plunger in a graduated glass cylinder and let it settle, while recording the time rate of settling. The settling rates corresponding to different pulp dilutions are found, the ultimate dilution obtained is measured, and the necessary thickener area in square feet per ton of dry solids per 24 hours is calculated, for each pulp dilution. The largest area found is used in selecting the proper thickener size.

"Simulation can serve as a convenient tool in studying the behaviour and performance of grinding circuits by facilitating the evaluation of various scenarios and identification of optimum operating conditions. This technique was applied to the St Andrew Goldfields Ltd.’s Stock Mine Mill which is a 1300 tpd gold milling facility, offering custom milling services as well as processing the Company’s own ores. Lack of adequate instrumentation in the mill poses a challenge in attaining optimum performance especially with changing ore types and characteristics. The grinding process is monitored essentially by manual measurement and adjustment of pulp densities at various streams. A simulation program was designed to assist in the effective implementation of this mode of grinding control. Product sizes from both the primary and secondary grinding circuits were correlated empirically to relevant process variables using a database formed from the results of past sampling campaigns. The simulator was created in Microsoft Excel whose data analysis and optimization tools coupled with its Visual Basic Programming capabilities were found to provide an excellent environment for the development of a cost-effective, efficient and user-friendly simulation program.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is often a very costly unit process in milling operations, mainly due to the excessive energy consumption associated with it. For example, for a Canadian copper-zinc flotation mill, grinding was listed as being the most costly item taking up 30.4% of the total milling expenses, followed by the flotation cost at 2 1 .O% (Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., 1982). A survey on 45 copper flotation mills around the world showed the average grinding cost to be 34.5% of the total milling cost (Weiss, 1985).Overgrinding aggravates the cost issue, while insufficient grinding either causes loss of valuable minerals to tails or results in low-grade concentrates. Therefore, it is essential that grinding circuits be carefully controlled and monitored. To this end, a great deal of effort has been devoted over the years to the modelling and simulation of grinding systems in order to assist in the efficient running of these processes."
