Nickel laterites constitute a significant proportion of the worldÆs Ni reserves and are considered environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional sulfide resources. Subsequently they are of increasing significance for exploration and production. To be successfully exploited, however, they require an understanding of the relations between mineralogy, texture, grade and recovery. The development of automated quantitative mineralogy can aid in the characterisation of the ores to help improve extraction and processing methods. Recent developments in hydrometallurgy have resulted in relatively straightforward recovery of Ni in silicate (saprolite and smectite) ores. However, the extraction of Ni from limonitic ores is more complex. It requires a detailed understanding of the iron-hydroxide species and other, potentially interfering, oxide and hydroxide compounds. Particularly the relations between the Ni-bearing goethite and Mn, Al and Cr may adversely affect the economic prospects of an ore. Manganese can adversely affect the selective recovery of Ni and Co from solutions but has also been highlighted as a significant potential by-product (cf, Zhang and Cheng, 2007). Aluminium hydroxides can be significant acid consumers leading to an increased expense of extraction (Johnson, Cashmore and Hockridge, 2005). Chromite is resistant to acid attack, but chromium in goethite may adversely affect the dissolution leading to a retention of Ni (McDonald and Whittington, 2008). This study presents an investigation of oxide and hydroxide species in laterites using QEMSCAN« EDS/SEM-based automated quantitative mineralogy. Samples were collected from Turkey (¦aldag), Albania and the Philippines. Particular emphasis has been placed on the development of a quantification for Ni-poor and Ni-rich goethite.

This paper refers to a new idea of stereometry of cutting drums of longwall shearers designed to get medium and hard to mine coals. A new way to place picks on a drum enables to readjust a number of picks being in contact with the body of coal to shearer haulage speed. Owing to this a remarkable increase in depth of a cut within the low range of haulage speed has been obtained. On comparing operating characteristics a considerable reduction in the specific energy consumption has been shown when using the units machined as per the new idea, in comparison with the units produced in series.

About 60 per cent of magnesite ores of Haicheng Magnesium Mine, due to their low grade, are not currently commercially exploitable. In this paper, the flotabilities of the main component minerals of the ores were studied in detail with ether amine as collector. Based on. these, a new technique of reverse-direct flotation with single etheramine as collector for the beneficiation of the ores was developed. It gave highly satisfactory results. On the basis of the calculation by means of CNDO/2 method, of the studies of the solution chemistry of magnesite and of the adsorption tests and Zeta-potential measurements, the key mechanism in the new technique about activating effect of Ca2+ on the flotation of magnesite was suggested.

Recent works suggest that dehydration of subducting slab and consequent hydration and partial melting influences the dynamics of mantle wedge. Plums originating form the subducting slab due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability are responsible for heterogeneous composition of the mantle wedge. Also, occurrence of partial melt in the mantle wedge can trigger dynamic processes like exhumation of UHP rocks in intra-oceanic settings or can influence characteristics of the subduction tectonic regime. A new concept central to the search for sample correctness is presented. In spite of its simplicity, this concept has already unknowingly formed the implicit basis of already established, current limiting rules of use for certain types of samplers, used as mere examples in this paper. Once explicitly enunciated though, this fundamental principle gives immediate, simple and new practical rules for the design of predictably correct sampling equipment and for sampling device auditing. Examples of application are offered as an illustration, including an earlier, important, albeit unpublished, idea found in Pierre GyÆs earlier works.

Mining in the twenty-first century brings with it a new range of challenges, some unfamiliar to our industry. Skilled staff recruitment and retention is a significant issue. Equipment supply lead times are changing the risk profile under which we operate. And the new landscape of this century demands accountability at all levels while also requiring that we deliver more to our shareholders and our host communities. This paper draws on experiences in Waihi, addresses some of the challenges facing the modern mining industry and suggests some modest mitigation strategies.

This is reflected in the number of projects that have taken longer to build, exceeded their budgets and then struggled to achieve the performance targets so confidently predicted beforehand. This paper outlines the fundamental elements of project management necessary to deliver mining projects on time and on budget, and performing as originally intended. It looks at areas such as the study process, project planning, team selection and structure, project controls, types of contracts used and approaches to contract management.

Preliminary experiments have shown that, when used in a fusedchloride electrolyte, titanium carbide anodes dissolve yielding lower titanium chlorides which nlay be electrolysed in situ to produce a cathode deposit of pure titanium metal. The anode residues are easily withdrawn from the cell. Further experiments have established the operating conditions for maximum efficiency in the process.The process is essentially two-stage, viz.: (1) titanium carbide production, (2) electrolysis producing metal. Power requirements appear to be moderate and this fact, combine·d with the simplicity of the process make it attractive as a possible method for the production of titanium.INTRODUCTIONDue to the high reactivity of titanium and its, affinity for oxygen and nitrogen, the extraction of this metal generally involves the use of halide. compounds as intermediates. For instance, magnesium reduction of titanium tetrachloride is the basis of the well established Kroll process and electrolysis of the lower chlorides in a molten salt bath has been proposed by Cordner and Worner (1951, p. 358) and others (Brenner and Senderoff, 1952, 223C; The TitaI Company (Inc.), 1952) as means of production of the metal. Thedifficulty of preparation of these compounds prompted a search for an alternative extraction process. The fact that aluminium, an equally reactive metal, has been prepared by electrolysis using aluminium alloy anodes suggested the possibility of a similar process for titanium production.The Titan Company (Inc.) (1952) has patented the use of crude titanium metal anode, but it was thought possible that a metallic compound, such as the carbide, could be used for this purpose. In order to realise seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining, the environmental baseline survey around targeted SMS mining areas and the creation of an environmental assessment technique suitable for quantifying the impacts of ocean floor mining are necessary. The targeted areas generally host large chemosynthetic communities in association with active hydrothermal venting. The ecosystem structure around the chemosynthetic communities has not been clarified yet in macro-scale or quantitatively. The systematic approach and plan for the baseline survey and the environmental assessmentÆs basic studies are introduced. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Operation of the tankhouse at the Electro lytic Refining and Smelting Company's works has been improved, but further automation is re- quired to cut the labour intensive nature of the routine tasks. Anode quality, both chemical and physical, plays an important role in efficient refinery practice, and impurities such as lead, antimony and nickel have required careful monitoring for smooth operation. The gradual replacement of copper blanks by titanium has markedly improved the quality of starting sheets, but problems have been ex- perienced with surface preconditioning of the titanium blanks. Polishing with emery paper proved to be a successful technique.

Sustainability will become a more stringent issue in mine planning over the next 40 years. The evidence of this is apparent in State and Commonwealth government policies now emerging in respect to water, green house gases, waste and other process emissions. The mining industry has developed policies such as æEnduring ValueÆ, which go some way towards establishing a framework within which mining can continue to be an underpinning strength within the Australian economy. However, the demands of new policies are directed at extending sustainability in ways that will change the way in which projects are implemented. This paper examines the nature of new policies aimed at water, energy and emissions, considering examples of where mining practices have or may change in order to meet new objectives in resource efficiency. Important issues will, as always, be the international price competitiveness of the mineral resources being produced but, where this is now devolved around mining and processing costs, these costs may in the future be strongly correlated to the nature and cost of local energy resources compared with those in Australia, the ability to mitigate and minimise water resource use and environmental impacts deriving from emissions and the veracity of competitor nations in meeting the same standards of performance in resource efficiency usage and in emissions control. As these systems bed down internationally mining in Australia will need to concentrate, amongst other things, on finding higher grade orebodies and on better technologies to release the value of lower grade ores. For our mining industry to remain strong, greater expenditure will need to be focused on these objectives. Finally, it will be important for the industry to remain vigilant and proactive in directing government policy development to ensure that practical objectives in mining are not curtailed unnecessarily through ignorance of mining market precepts developed over the centuries of mining operations.

Just as Australia is part of the Pacific Rim, so the Pacific Rim should be viewed as part of the whole world. That applies in particular to that scarce commodity û money. There are five main factors of production in any mining development û mineralisation, materials, manpower, management and money. LetÆs focus on the upstream input û mineralisation, and the downstream input û money, especially in the area of communications. Unknown to many, the Competent Person reporting on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves has a direct and unavoidable impact on the companyÆs financial statements û the profit and loss account and balance sheet. With respect to reporting of the major asset of most mining companies û the resources/reserves û investors are getting a better deal now than at any time in memory as regards flow and adequacy of information. Australia has been a world leader in this regard. The outlook is for even more informative and useful reporting. The more rigorous reporting requirements for Exploration Results and Mineral Resources/Reserves, which have become a worldwide phenomenon over the last five years, will continue. This will be positive for the mining industry as a whole and for Australia in particular. However competition for the scarce investment dollar will also increase. Put simply, mining has many competitors, unconnected with mining, for the capture of the investment dollar. It behoves all participants to recognise that there are three investment factors which influence strongly the willingness of investors to put money into mining. These are Confidence, Credibility and Consistency. AustraliaÆs investment image stands high in these three respects, but the competition will continue to grow. AustraliaÆs lead must be maintained. However, some investment decisions should not necessarily be based on fundamental, quantifiable facors. Some of these are outlined.

Gold mining in Waihi spans three centuries and five generations. Following the discovery of gold in 1878 the Martha Mine was developed and the town of Waihi grew up around it. Now, five generations later, descendents of many of the original settler families continue to live and work in Waihi. Many have returned to mining, in jobs far removed from those of their parents or grandparents.   Members of three local families were interviewed on video. This paper is a summary of some of the major themes and gives some insight into the role gold mining played in the development of the region and its continued its importance today.

Due to treatment of refractory carbonaceous low-grade gold ores a new technology providing improved precious metal recovery is required. For this reason, a technology including gravity, flotation, recleaning of the flotation concentrate, intensive cyanidation of the gravity concentrate and carbon in leach (CIL)-process for intensive cyanidation tailings and the recleaned concentrate was developed. The proposed technology allows to decrease preg-robbing activities of concentrates treated by subsequent cyanidation. Total gold recovery by the proposed technology from the ore with a head grade of 0.8 g/t was 83.9 per cent. The gold loading onto the activated carbon from CIL process was 6.500 g/t.

More than 1000 Ian of seismic reflection data correlated to ten exploration wells along with geological, gravity and magnetic data are used to construct the subsurface structure, in particular the crystalline basement, along a corridor approximately 100 Ian wide that traverses central Iraq in SE-NW direction for a distance of about 500 km from Baghdad in the central part of Iraq to Dohuk near the Turkish border. This transect is one of few such transects that represents the Iraqi contribution to the Global Geoscience Transects (GGT) project. The transect crosses two out of three major tectonic elements of Iraq: the unfolded zone and the folded zone.

The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

The concentrations of trace metals in deep hydrothermal solutions (~1 km depth, 200 to >300¦C) from modern hydrothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and Ladolam, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea were obtained using a purpose-built downhole fluid sampler and ICP-MS analyses. The results range widely: gold (<0.1 - 23 ppb); silver (<3 - 2400 ppb); arsenic (100 - 18 000 ppm); antimony (2 - 1200 ppm); mercury (<1 - 78 ppb) and provide the basis for quantifying the flux and fate of metals as well as assessing their sources (Simmons and Brown, 2006, 2007). The successful application of flotation is now over one hundred years old. However in a practical industrial sense, it still remains predominantly an art rather than a quantifiable science. Moreover, the laboratory testing, interpretation and application of the technology can still be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid optimisation of flotation testing with limited representative sample utilisation. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimise several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing, this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimisation projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application.

Indonesia remains relatively unexplored by modern methods. The great expectations created by the rush of companies taking up Contracts of Work over large areas during the epithermal gold/ring-of-fire boom (1985-7) have not been fulfilled. This is not necessarily a reflection on the prospectivity of Indonesia; on the contrary, many of the hopeful companies were,, under-staffed and under-financed to overcome the physical and logistic problems of exploring virgin jungle.After the stock market crash of 19th October, 1987, many of the weaker companies were unable to sustain their programs or to arrange farm-outs, and they have subsequently relinquished their tenements. In some cases, little or no field work has been carried out so that many areas remain untested. This poor performance will ensure much more rigorous scrutiny of future applications by the Indonesian authorities.
