This paper describes some of the challenges and opportunities of contract mining overseas, based on the experiences of Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd over recent years. It seeks to highlight the advantages Australian miners have compared to competitors around the world, and the opportunities that arise from that. A number of pitfalls and how to avoid them are also discussed.

To explain in any depth the industrial relations of Broken Hill I believe that it is necessary to trace some of the many happenings that created the present industrial climate. While appreciating that our relations with the local industry are relatively good, it must be pointed out that to preserve and improve this present situation a duty is owed to everyone connected with the industry (workers, share- holders, etc.) by management and unions to see that just and reasonable agreements are found for any disputes. If the companies ever take the local position for granted it would soon die, killed by someone who may get some short term benefit, but who would lose something of incalculable worth in the long run. An Ore Reserve Estimate aims to foreqast the impact of the complex mixture of factors which constitute a mining and milling operation. The factors are pulled together in the Mine Plan which then constrains the reserve estimate. At the Zinc Mine at Broken Hill the complexity of the ore lodes highlights some of the factors which affect the ore grade estimates and at Elura the different metallurgical characteristics of the ore types influences their economic viability.

The grades of alluvial ore deposits are low compared with grades of hard rock mining. This factor, combined with other parameters of irregular distribution of particles, bedrock irregularities, size of particles, nugget effect, ore characteristics, and wet horizons, combine to place alluvial deposits among the most difficult to evaluate, and on which to establish an ore reserve with a high degree of confidence. With increased geological input, correct selection and implementation of sampling method, due regard to sample representativity and process design, these confidence levels can be achieved.

The results of shaft lining monitoring gave rise to an investigation of cracks observed in the structure. An hypothesis was made that the cracks might be due to stresses caused by energy wave propagation, triggered during blasting or by the rock falls. However, it could not be excluded that the cracks had their origin in the rheologic changes taking place in the concrete. To prove the hypothesis, an investigation of the scale of the increase of stress due to the energy triggered was undertaken. At the same time it was decided to attempt to determine the "damage threshold" for such material in the danger zone. In the paper the investigation and its results are presented, as conducted in one of the shafts. In conclusion, certain generaliza- tions are proposed to give a starting point in the consideration of similar problems elsewhere.

GeoScience Victoria has completed quantitative assessments of undiscovered gold endowment in the northern parts of the Bendigo and Stawell Zones. The under cover area in the Bendigo Zone (10 000 km2) is likely to contain approximately 1000 t and at least 290 t of gold in undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold deposits. For the under cover area in the Stawell Zone (30 000 km2), the estimates are approximately 1200 t and at least 200 t of undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold. The Ertsberg (Gunung Bijih) Mining District is located in the core of the highlands of west New Guinea, an island long recognised as the product of a Cenozoic arccontinent collision. Geologic studies in the Central Ranges of the Papua Province of Indonesia (near Puncak Jaya, 4884 m) have revealed timing relationships, when combined with mechanical considerations, led to a refined model for the tectonomagmatic effects of collisional orogenesis and the formation of the spectacular Grasberg porphyry-type copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit.   An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Many of the worldÆs stibnite deposits are found in orogenic zones and are mesothermal or epithermal in origin. They commonly occur near contacts between intrusives and metasediments. However, the spatial extent of anomalous Sb levels around such deposits is not well documented. This project has aimed to gain a better understanding of the mineralogy and geochemistry of Sb by deriving solubility and thermochemical data for some of the most common secondary Sb minerals. This has then been applied in field exploration for Sb ore deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

The Century zinc deposit is located in Queensland approximately 250 kilometres north north-west of the provincial city of Mount Isa, on Lawn Hill Station and within 150 kilometres of the Gulf of Carpentaria.ThefirstMining Lease in this area was pegged in 1887. The Silver King vein is the largestvein deposit in the area and has produced lead and zinc, in addition to 74,000 ounces of silver during its history.A total of forty three veins containing silver, lead and zinc are now known, all of which were discovered by prospectors within 10 years of the first vein being recognized.

A brief introduction is given of the scale and of some special features of South African gold mining; it is noted that great depth of mining and narrowness of the reefs, and hardness and abrasiveness of the rock are the main sources of the problems of the industry. The most inhibiting problems are: Excessive rock pressure occcurring in conjunction with rockbursts, hot and humid working places due to high virgin rock temperature and auto-compression of the air, and low level of productivity. Conventional solutions applied ordinarily in mining do not promise to eliminate, or even alleviate, these difficulties.

The Income Tax Assessment Act ["the Act"] levies tax on a taxpayer's taxable income. At a time when commerce and life were more simple, the calculation of taxable income had some connection with logic and a taxpayer's capacity to pay. However, as a result of successive governments' different views of equity, their perception of avoidance, their needs for revenue and their changing views on capacity to pay, the rules determining the calculation of taxable income have continually changed to the point that logic is no longer relevant. Taxable income now is simply the product of the application of a complex set of rules.

The production of high-grade calcined bauxite is very dependent on the moisture content of the final product. Existing procedures rely on the ignition of small samples to monitor the effectiveness of the calcination process. The results obtained by this gravimetric technique are several hours behind production and do not permit regular adjustment of the furnace to optimize the control of the chemically bound water content (LOI).To provide rapid and hence more relevant results, a neutron moderation technique has been developed for measuring the LOI of bulk samples of calcined bauxite while they are still hot. The method uses fast neutrons from an 241 Am-Be neutron source to irradiate the samples, and the backscattered thermal neutrons detected are a measure of bound moisture content.The rms deviation between neutron and conventional determinations of LOI, in 15 calcined bauxite samples, was 0.08 per cent LOI over the range 0.1 to 0.9 per cent LOI. When allowance is made for the rms error in the ignition method, the error in the neutron method is found to be 0.07 per cent LOI.

A 14/12 millMAXTM pump was installed in the SAG1 grinding circuit as a trial replacement for the existing 12/10 Warman for performance comparison and in an attempt to overcome process difficulties. Krebs Engineers have developed the millMAXTM pump wet end to adapt to a variety of power frames. This system has been developed specifically for coarse material contained in mill discharge. SAG1 discharge screen undersize with a top size of 10 mm is collected in a flat bottom sump. Two 12/10 Warman pumps located on the same side of the sump, pump the screen undersize at 50 to 65 per cent solids to a distributor box which splits into two separate ball mill circuit sumps. One pump is installed towards the screen feed, while the other is towards the screen oversize discharge. The pump located towards the screen oversize discharge is prone to continual operating problems including pump bogging, high impeller and casing wear, and has consequently restricted SAG mill throughput. To rectify this pumping problem, it was decided to change-out the wet end of this pump with a millMAXTM. The design of the new pump enabled the wet end only to be retrofitted to the existing Warman pump frame, thus reducing change-over time. This was undertaken in the workshop under the supervision of a company representative where the pump, complete with bearing frame, new wet end, motor and base frame, was assembled. After installation of the millMAXTM pump during a SAG mill shutdown, performance indicators including motor power draw, sump level, and pump discharge pressure have been monitored. The trends indicate an increase in discharge pressure, low sump level, and low motor power draw. With the improved pumping efficiency there has been minimal pump bogging and no consequent SAG mill throughput restrictions. Pump wear rate has also decreased.

The reasons for using SFRS, including the way a SFRS performs in comparison to plain shotcrete as a support element in mining tunnels, are discussed. The mechanisms by which steel fibres reinforce shotcrete and the need for specifying performance criteria are highlighted. A description of current testing procedures, including an overview of æquantitativeÆ design recommendations provided from various international authorities, is provided. A summary of international recommendations on suitable æqualitativeÆ performance classifications is also reviewed, including a critique of their suitability. Finally recommendations on the practical considerations necessary to ensure good quality, in-place SFRS, are made, including a calculation method for determining minimum steel fibre dosages.

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

In another paper the author described the electrolytic preparation of highly-purified lead. One of the most difficult parts, yet perhaps the most essential part, of that research was to ensure, firstly, that the purification process should be effective; secondly, that it should remain effective; thirdly, that the lead should not be contaminated during the tests that were done on it. All this necessitated periodic analyses of the lead.The purpose of this paper is to describe the work done by the author to check the accuracy of some known rapid methods for the estimation of impurities in highly-purified lead, with the intention of applying them to the control of the electrolytic process above-mentioned.METHODS ALREADY IN USEThe literature sets out accurate methods for the estimation of impurities in lead, but these methods are both lengthy and expensive. For example, the method described by Hemingway is used in the Port Pirie laboratory of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., but it requires a sample as large as 1000 grm., and the time required to analyse a sample extends over days, and is too long to allow of quick control over a running process. This method was used by the Associated Smelters to obtain the analyses quoted in another paper by the author.

In February 1974 a continuous synthetic polymer dosing plant was installed at Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited's Pellet Plant at Dampier. The polymer, supplied in a liquid sus- pension, is used to improve the drying characteristics of green pellets. 'Three years of test work were involved in the development of the use of polymers. Polymer is continuously dosed to the balling spray water system at a rate determined by the flow of spray water to the discs. Problems have been experienced with handling the polymer in 44 gallon drums, the increased viscosity of the spray water, disc overloads, increased bed strength and increased "stickiness" of pellet fines.

Two recently published studies have considered whether and how robots, which have been designed for manufacturing applications, could find use in mining. The conclusions of both studies, if not identical, are compatible. Automation of mining activities will continue. Robots, at least in the short term, will have little application in mining. However, robotic concepts, both hardware and software, are of considerable relevance to mining automation, and can be anticipated to diffuse gradually into mine environments. The present paper is intended to convey the current state of thought on this subject to IFAC Symposium participants who may be unfamiliar with the referenced studies, and is not intended to report previously unpublished research.
