Basic principles of stack injection are outlined and supported by calculations of thermal, chemical and aerodynamic requirements of an ideal 4000 tpd furnace. Calculated results show that these requirements vary with conversion of FeO, and that best performance may be expected with XFeO = 1.0 for which calculated production is 6919 tpd and coke rate is only 211 kg/thm. Calculations are also presented for a cycled injection. Discussions show that stack injection is a good way of overcoming softening problems and meeting the demand for iron in a fluctuating demand situation when it exceeds the maximum capacity of a furnace.

One does not need to travel too far back in time to find that the manpower requirements for new projects were focused mainly on: ò plentifulness of supply; ò cheapness of use; and ò fitness for use. These were primarily quantitative considerations and corresponded with the dominant view of labour as a commodity. Qualitative considerations were not very evident with the exception of judgements of industrial militancy. It was not unusual for areas of known militancy to be excluded from the recruitment net (eg Captain's Flat, Broken Hill, Pilbara).

The natural semiconducting mineral rutile and sphalerite exhibited highly photocatalytic activities on degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The isomorphous substitutions of host metal ions by foreign ions and other defect states in natural semiconductors altered the band structure, decreased the intrinsic band gap, and then made them very attractive for solar energy utilisation. Our study indicated that natural semiconductor minerals might be suggested as a new class of cost-effective and solar light-responsive photocatalyst.

The need to describe shape properties of solid particles arises in many applications in the mining and minerals industry. This paper presents a technique for describing the shape of 2D particle profiles from digital images, based on traversals of the circumference of the profile boundary at a succession of different scales. The traversals are undertaken in such a way as to establish a more stable set of results than usually arises from conventional fractal multi-scale shape characterisation techniques. The resulting values can be used to provide compact information on various generic shape features of the particle profile.

This paper details the approach adopted to develop an integrated asset management system for a GreenfieldÆs Metallurgical Plant during a recently completed feasibility study. The proposed asset management system deals with general aspects related to metallurgical operations and includes the following:plant operation and control, human resources, security systems, stores, and maintenance management. The paper deals with the establishment of requirements for the asset management system, the interfaces required, available systems in place and cost estimations for implementation. Every effort was made to integrate the system into existing corporate installations to create an integrated and effective management tool from both a plant operation and support perspective.

Sulphide concentrates are produced in a wide range of mineral processing operations. In the case of base metals they are further treated by smelting and/or hydrometallurgical techniques. In the case of refractory gold ores, sulphide concentrates containing gold are roasted or oxidised by various hydrometallurgical processes. This paper discusses the development of the Activox(R) Process which can provide an alternative method for treating sulphide concentrates. This process consists of fine or ultra-fine milling, followed by mild pressure oxidation to produce solutions of base metals or to liberate refractory gold. Base metal solutions (eg of nickel and cobalt) can be further processed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, while refractory gold can be recovered by cyanidation. The economics of the Activox(R) Process are often better than alternative oxidation techniques.

THE past few years have seen a considerable expansion of the roasting of blende in Australia. The bulk of this blende is Zinciferous concentrate from Broken Hill and now forms a very considerable source of sulphur for the acid manufacture. It will bereadily conceded that Australian sentiment is in favour of utilising all known potential wealth, especially that won from below ground, as this once disposed of is gone forever. If Australia does not make sulphuric acid from her sulphide ores we may be sure that the purchaser of these ores will do so if in any way possible. It must not be assumed, then, that the difficulties met are mentioned with the idea of undue criticism, but rather to show that, although most of the intial troubles have been overcome, there are still a few to be encountered; and with the hope that comment brought forth will aid in the solution of the problems facing an industry at present little more than in its childhood as far as Australia is concerned.Blende roasting is done in mechanical furnaces of various makes, and mostly without the aid of other fuel than the sulphur in the ore. It will be our aim to touch on the various difficulties in the order in which they occur in the train from furnace to acid plant.

Laser ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) analysis of fluid inclusions trapping mineralising solutions in major porphyry-copper deposits indicates that copper concentrations can reach 103 - 104 ppm in both dilute, CO2-bearing fluids and in high salinity brines. Non-Cl transport of Cu is implicated. Au has been determined at 0.2 - 0.4 ppm in the low salinity fluids and may be co-transported with Cu. In contrast, high concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb are only attained in brines and correlate strongly with Cl-indicating chloride transport. Physical and/or temporal separation of these fluid types can therefore producemetal fractionation within porphyry systems. Evidence concerning the behaviour of Mo is less clear but brine transport appears to be favoured; phase separation is one mechanism that may account for the fractionation of Mo from Cu and the formation of quartz-molybdenite veins. The T33-34 blast, the first major blast at Mount Isa Mines, broke 1,360,000 tonnes of copper ore using 349 tonnes of explosives. The original concept of firing T33, T34, T35 and U37 separately was changed during the life of the project due to adverse ground conditions. These conditions also caused the stoping method to be modified after the firing of the stopes had started. To stabilise the two stopes T33 and T34 where large fall off was occurring, rib pillars were left in the original slot. This caused the blast design to be more complex as these rib pillars had to "lead" the blast. The implication of such a large blast on the underground and surface environment was thoroughly investigated and precautions taken. The charging time of the blast was six weeks. Hook-up was started four days before the blast and continued until two hours prior to the blast. Detailed scheduling was carried out of other work that had to be done in the 24 hours before the blast to ensure that there were no delays in the firing.

Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. The Campamento Au/Ag deposit, discovered by Linear Gold in 2004, is located in Chiapas State, southern Mexico. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of Pleistocene-Pliocene andesitic volcanic rocks that have been intruded by a feldspar-phyric porphyry complex. Measured and indicated resources are 852 000 oz Au and 3.46 million ounces Ag with inferred resources of 374 000 ounces Au and 920 000 oz Ag. Resources were estimated at a 1.0 g/t Au equivalent cut-off. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

At depths greater than several kilometres in the crust, elevated temperature, confining pressure, and the presence of reactive pore fluids typically drives rapid destruction of permeability in fractured and porous rock. Ongoing deformation is required to regenerate permeability and facilitate the high fluid flux necessary to produce hydrothermal ore systems. A dominant influence on the evolution of fluid pathways in hydrothermal systems is provided by stress states, fluid pressures and reactions that drive permeability enhancement and compete with permeability destruction processes (Cox, Braun and Knackstedt, 2001). Newmont Waihi Gold operates the Martha Mine open pit at Waihi, New Zealand and is developing the Favona Underground Project two kilometres to the east. The Company is exploring the Waihi district under eight exploration permits totalling 6300 hectares.   Martha Mine is scheduled to close in late-2006. The Company has instigated and funded a significant programme of community consultation to mitigate the effects of mine closure on the community and enhance effective participation in the selection and provision of appropriate community facilities post mining.   This paper provides an overview of current issues and future developments.

A vigorous seismic and drilling programme has been conducted over.ar area of .59000 square miles in the Roma district during the last three years. The work is Mill' in progress and although many new geological concepts have been discovered, he subsurface geology is not yet finalised. D.atailed examination has shown many variations of .section, has established the general basement trends and sedimentary thicknesses, has shown that much more of the section is marine than previously thought ~nd has indicated that any reservoirs throughout the section could be potential oil ind/or gas producers if suitable traps are located.

The recent description provided by Scott (1981) of the Ardlethan alteration systems is of particular interest as it draws attention to the analogy between Ardlethan and the porphyry tin systems of Bolivia (Sillitoe et aI, 1975).During 1978-1979 a parallel study of the mineralization confirmed that the extensive alteration pattern relates to a series of breccia pipes which provide access channelways for the mineralizing solutions (Clarke, 1979). Many of the results reported by Scott are difficult to interpret without this concept and this short discussion is intended to provide additional perspective to the proposed porphyry tin model.The breccia pipe systems are centred upon each of the major mineralized zones (Wild Cherry, Carpathia, Stackpool and White Crystal) and with the exception of the White Crystal collapse breccia the major pipes are of the hydrothermal intrusive type. They range considerably in size and shape and at least two ages of formation are revealed by their cross cutting relationships at the Stackpool, Carpathia and Ardwest regions. Individual pipes or groups of pipes have distinctive alteration/infill characteristics and the entire system can be viewed as a complex porphyry tin system evolving with time. The recognition of pipes of different types and ages reveals a situation considerably more complex than suspected by Scott, and hence both the geochemical data and modelling require reinterpretation.For instance, the geochemical data contained within Tables 2 and 3 (Scott, 1981) relate to two separate breccia pipes which correspond to the South Cherry and Ardwest ore zones respectively. Although it is probable that both pipes are temporarily identical it is important that the geochemical data be viewed in context. The brecciation is extremely difficult to recognize and it is probable that the chemical compositions given represent mixtures of altered fragments and rock flour, together with material precipitated from solution as matrix, along microfractures, within small vughs, etc.
