The aim of all modelling is to replicate geological reality as closely as possible using available data. This paper is aimed at one end of the spectrum, where very limited data is combined with intuitive geological ideas to synthesise models for either target definition or for determining minimum viable mining scenarios. Interactive 3D modelling allows a satisfactory hypothetical geometry of surfaces to be assembled, and provides a fast quantitative method for generating targets. As data flows from exploration, an evolving geological model assists with the progressive evaluation of a prospect. Two case histories are described where this approach has been used successfully, the Mosquito Hill Prospect in Queensland and the Longwood Ranges Platinum Prospect in New Zealand. The possibility is also discussed of hypothetically modelling an orebody which has yet to be discovered. The proper description of an orebody is the foundation upon which all mine design and planning is undertaken. The volumetric accuracy of the model is crucial in valuing an orebody. Geologists must form a geometry which matches the conceptual view of the ore occurrence and ensure that they understand how the computer system used calculates volumes. If the underlying assumptions inherent in the method conflict in any way with the conceptual model visualised for the ore occurrence, then that method must not be used.

Thermal comminution is an industrial process specially suited to very abrasive material, when contamination with Fe from wearing parts of conventional crushing and grinding equipment must be avoided. It involves an initial step of heating the material to be comminuted, followed by sudden cooling (quenching) and finally by a conventional mechanical process to disassemble the particle aggregates. The thermal step is, in fact, a pre-fracturing process. The heating operation causes changes in phase of the minerals and changes in volume of these minerals and other substances included in pores and cracks. The cooling operation causes thermal shock reversions or the phase transformation and consequent generation of internal stresses, high enough to fracture the solid.

Finding a balance between practical and acceptable groundwater management, and providing for the needs and impacts of mining developments remains a challenge. The changes that accompanied the recent implementation of water reforms have provided greater flexibility for the water manager and greater certainty for the resource user. However uncertainty associated with understanding of complex aquifer systems, balanced against providing for the needs of mining developments, the rights of existing water resource users and expectations of the broader community have not diminished the conflicting issues faced by water resource managers and resource developers. Licensing under the Water Act 2000 provides the regulatory link with the taking of water for water supply purposes or as a consequence of the mining activity. This paper outlines key elements of sustainable water resource management involving certainty of access to water and adaptive environmental management that are delivered through conditioning the water licences issued for the particular mining development. Implementation of this approach is illustrated through a case study involving the BHP Billiton Cannington Mine in North West Queensland.

The Minerals Council of Australia has instigated this initiative, which is run by the Minerals Tertiary Education Council. The program is a pioneering partnership between the Australian minerals industry, Australian governments and key Australian universities. It is designed to deliver key undergraduate and postgraduate courses for tomorrowÆs minerals industry professionals in the fields of geoscience, mining and minerals engineering and metallurgy. The flagship course for geoscience professionals is the G3 Masters program. This is a coursework-based degree supported by the Minerals Tertiary Education Council, and a partnership between James Cook University, the University of Tasmania and the University of Western Australia. These partners represent the leading-edge providers of minerals geoscience education and R&D in Australia. This paper reviews the developments in understanding of the entrainment mechanism and its modelling in industrial flotation processes over the last 30 years. Both valuable and gangue minerals in the pulp zone of an industrial flotation machine can be transported through the froth zone to the concentrate launder in the water which must also be transferred from the pulp zone to maintain a stable froth zone in conventional flotation. A size dependent portion of each entrained mineral continues in normal circumstances to the concentrate launder. The size dependency arises because the larger particles are able to drain more successfully from the froth region. Gangue minerals are recovered by a number of mechanisms, entrainment being an important one in many cases. The entrainment mechanism is discussed on the basis of the pattern observed in recovery û size data for minerals. Its industrial implications are discussed and means of minimisation of the importance of the mechanism are also discussed. Various means proposed for mathematical modelling of the entrainment mechanism are also described. The effect of process variables on key parameters in these models is reviewed. Properties of both the pulp and froth zones are discussed where needed and means of taking additional measurements with devices developed over the last ten years are discussed as part of the collection of more detailed data on the flotation process in general and the entrainment mechanism in particular.

Statistical frequency distributions may be used to characterize the overall variation of grade in orebodies. Special types of distribution (e.g. lognormal, log-type A) are necessary to describe skewness inthe case of rare metals. Also needed (but for the most part hitherto neglected) is the serial correlation function which describes the tendency for grades near together in an orebody to be closer together than grades at points relatively far apart.The sampling problem for orebodies is interpreted in statistical terms. Different methods are reviewed, and the effect of serial correlation discussed.A discussion is given, based on experiments and observations made by the author, of biases arising in the minei:l material by such methods as chip sampling and grab sampling due to such causes as nonrepresentative selection by the sampler.INTRODUCTIONMiners have always recognized the large element of chance in their operations. Chance is the raw material of statistical theory and, provided there is some recognizable pattern or underlying regularity in a set of data arising from the operation of chance events, statisticians are able to formulate mathematical models to study them. Mining engineers, geologists, and statisticians have gone a long way between them towards finding general statistical rules which describe the distribution of minerals and metals in orebodies, and even the distribution of orebodies over the earth's surface.These rules do not have the force of physical laws, though they obviously derive from them and have been used to throw light on them. A method using dynamic programming for solving the optimum pit limit problem was presented in an earlier paper. A recent issue of this journal contained some contributed discussion on the implementation of this technique. In this paper we provide some additional ideas and possible options one can incorporate into the method. In particular, an efficient procedure for obtaining further optimum pit outlines on extensions of the original block model is described.

This presentation opens with a definition of technology and how it is implemented. The expenditure and progress on R&D in the mining industry is then investigated and found to be difficult to quantify. The needs and interests of that industry including contribution to this Congress are examined and it is concluded that short-term rather than long-term goals seem to be prevalent. The presentation concludes with the opinion that the answer to the question in the title is both affirmative and negative but overall there is a need for the mining industry to become more innovative.

This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

On the basis of the data known on formation, characteristics and stability of solute heavy non-ferrous metals under different temperature and pressure conditions and different concentrations of substances dissolved it is found to be possible to obtain a condition of mineral formation resulting in selective production of free-floating minerals. This process of forced mineral formation has been taken as a basis of new methods of refractory copper raw materials concentration, complex processing of lead dust from copper smelting plants, lead flotation tailings final concentration and of those of polymetallic ores concentration. This list of effective utilisation of the process is not exhaustive (Bekturganov Abishev and Shkodin, 1987; Bekturganov and Sim, 1987; Bekturganov, 1988; Abishev and Bekturganov, 1989; Bekturganov, 1989a). To understand the character of the sulphurising thermodynamic and kinetic examination have been done. Analysis of conditions of the newly formed mineral associations formation and stability facilitates the elaboration of methods of improvement of results of the valuable components selective separation.

Limited's project in the Pilbara because the mining town of Newman was built almost entirely by the Company whereas residential areas built by the Company at Port Hedland were developed as an adjunct to an existing town. The following discussion points out the different problems which have been developed in the two areas, even though basically the stand- ard of housing and general amenities is the same, and the means taken to overcome these Problems.

Recent demand pressures for iron ore should not distract from the longer term view that intense competition in the industry has demanded technological innovation of a high order. There is a long track record of successful innovation underpinned by a solid base of scientific research and knowledge. By comment on recent developments in trucks, comminution and direct smelting, this paper suggests that innovation is still a key attribute of the industry. The spending of the minerals industry on underlying science, however, is not particularly high. By looking at other industries we can ascertain that for step change technologies, it is particularly advantageous to have a solid base of science and technology underpinning developments.

In 1975 the US Bureau of Mines (BOM) under contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), began a systematic mineral resource evaluation of Indian reservations in the United States. The purpose of the BIA/BOM program was to stimulate economic development on Indian lands through exploration and mining ventures with the mining industry. Since that time, 109 phase I reports (literature studies) and nearly 45 phase II and phase III (field studies) reports have been written by the BOM. The various tribes in conjunction with the BIA have access to these reports for decision making regarding mineral resource development.

The term "joint venture" lacks any precise legal definition but is typically used to denote a form of legal relationship which is neither a partnership nor a corporation. Nbst joint ventures are contractual relationships which provide for the sharing of mining leases and production facilities and for the sharing of costs, but which enable each joint venturer to carry on his own separate business. The rationale for such relationships is that each participant: retains independent taxation status may independently grant direct security over his interest in the project assets for financing purposes Bankers prefer to lend to incorporated joint ventures (i.e. corporations in which all of the joint venturers are shareholders) but will lend to individual joint venturers provided the joint venture agreement does not imperil their security; i.e. provided there is a "bankable" joint venture. The carpeting objectives of joint venturers and their bankers may be reconciled and unnecessary conflict avoided by the timely inclusion of appropriate provisions in the joint venture agreement before financing negotiations commence.
