The paper describes the progress made in the last decade with the introduction of comprehensive monitoring of the mine atmosphere into U.K. collieries. Brief descriptions are given of the various portable and fixed point instruments which have been developed for this purpose and the methods available for transmission of information to the surface are also discussed. The paper also outlines some of the research work being carried out both in the laboratory and underground on the development of alternative methods of fire detection. Some of the results from this work are illustrated and discussed.

The process and control technologies incorporated into the coal preparation plant at Newlands were to be used for the first time in Australia. The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. In addition the commissioning process would have to be completed quickly. The organisation coped with all of these problems and more.

Applied mineralogy involves conducting investigations on ores, minerals and materials to solve problems encountered in mining, metallurgy, processing, industrial minerals, environment, health and other fields. The investigations are performed to determine the mineral behaviours during processing by using every mineral and ore characterisation technique and appropriate instruments. As the field is young, new techniques and instruments are still being developed. This paper attempts to convey the scope of the field by:describing the capabilities of the respective research instruments for determining mineral characteristics, summarising investigations of gold as an example of applied mineralogy studies of precious metals, andpresenting a case history where applied mineralogists worked closely with mineral processing engineers on a base metal ore and mill products to help the engineers optimise their processes for maximum recoveries.

The ore reserves of the Frieda porphyry copper prospect in Papua New Guinea have been estimated using kriging and an alternative method. Only very erratic variograms could be obtained from the raw data and thus it can be expected that kriging variances will be unrel- iable. The frequency distributions of the two sets of estimates show expected differences and the resulting mineable reserves show similar expected differences. More drilling and the use of disjunctive kriging are needed to produce reliable estim- Ates.

Owing to the 'creeps' and consequent movements in the mines, followed by the recent fire in the southern workings, the whole of the orebody above the 800 ft. level is now very much crushed and broken. The same applies to the hanging wall or overwall coutrny, which has subsided towards the workings, so that for some years past all development work within the lode has had to be carried out with extreme care.The continual but slow subsidence of the overburden into the stopes necessitates a periodical renewal of all gangways in the lode, and, as the subsidence amounts to as much as 60 ft. in places, these new gangways must necessarily pass through the mullock-filling of old stopes in addition to broken ore. They at times pass into the broken ground of the hanging-wall for some distance, where the orebody has widened underneath by the original folding and puckering.

Offshore petroleum development involves massive capital expenditure and financing demands, with the main participants being large international oil companies and State owned enterprises. Types of project oriented financing include take-or-pay contracts, throughput agreements, and production payment financing. The main project finance credit aspects are revenues, investment budgets and cost over- runs, reservoir, political and other risks and special problems such as weather and corrosion in the North Sea. A variety of documents is required and a mix of equity, export credit and Euro-market financing will typically be included in the financing.

The impact computers are having in geoscience is distinctly mixed. In the petroleum industry where much of the data are based on geophysics, computers have become an integral part of exploration and reservoir evaluation and simulation. In the minerals industry, the trend to computerisation is more advanced in some disciplines than others. Geophysical and remote sensing data are routinely processed and imaged using state of the art computer techniques. Mine surveying, planning, design and resource and ore reserve estimation are now all predominantly reliant on computers. However senior management of many companies, particularly in the mineral exploration industry, are still reticent to fully embrace the technology. 3D computer modelling of geology and orebody delineation is still largely in its infancy. Two current and significant drawbacks to the routine use of computer modelling of geology in both mining and exploration are the tedious and time consuming modelling process and the lack of seamless interaction between 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS) which are largely 2D in their data treatment. There is an urgent need for a 3D spatial information system (eg 3D GIS) with intelligent and rapid modelling functionality. One of the keys to the successful building of 3D geological computer models begins with data base structure and design to ensure that there is no loss of data fidelity through data capture, storage, manipulation and modelling. Once a model is constructed, the latest generations of visualisation software provide sophisticated environments over a range of hardware platforms for visualisation in both mono and stereo viewing. The integration of environmental and permitting strategies into development has become a routine part of doing business for the international minerals industry. Paralleling the development schedule with the environmental and permitting schedule is critical to ensuring that design recognises environmental constraints and that the environmental and permitting program has the right focus and achieves the objective of obtaining workable permits that reflect the project design. Regulatory issues including the law of and controls established by the country the project is situated in, the requirements of international financing institutions, international politics and the role of environmental groups and the particular precedents and processes established are all important issues that must be recognised and incorporated into the permitting program by the developer. Technical issues including collecting early environmental data during exploration, establishing hydro-meteorology equipment, baseline data gathering, and getting good environmental engineering information as a part of feasibility and design are also critical issues to the success of a project which are under the direct control of the developer. Finally tying all of these issues into a single integrated strategy under the direction and control of a nominated team is necessary to maintain focus and achieve results.

A review of the literature indicated that several studies have been reported on the dissolution of gold using iodide/iodine, bromide/bromine leaching systems. Although the reagent costs are much cheaper for chloride/chlorine (or hypochlorite) this system has not been fully evaluated. This study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental chemistry of the chloride/hypochlorite leaching system. The CHEMIX program was used to model the stability of various gold species existing in the solution. The gold dissolution rate at different conditions was determined using gold strips immersed in various mixtures of chloride/hypochlorite. Leaching experiments were conducted to test the extraction of gold from various ores (oxidised and copper-gold ores), showing a promising prospect for this technique in various applications.

The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Men, women and even children, were employed as the mine expanded, and were generally bound to the colliery for life, performing daily work which would now be regarded as slavery. This primitive method of raising coal to the surface was slow, inefficient and highly dangerous, yet for want of a better method it continued until in 1602 it isrecorded as having been abolished in Wales, one of England's great coal districts. The central thickened discharge system of tailings disposal takes advantage of the natural beach slope formed by sub-aerially discharged tailings, and the non-segregating properties of thickened tailings, to create a homogeneous conical stack. The need for containing embankments can be largely avoided leading to capital and operating cost savings. Methods for estimating beach slopes and tailings density, essential parameters for the design of such a system, are described. Case histories from three mining operations are used to illustrate the application of the technique, There are also seen to be potential advantages in the areas of water management, seepage, and rehabilitation. Laboratory and in-situ testing enable parameters to be determined.

This study used structural equation modelling (SEM) to develop a series of models to explain the impact of work-life balance on employeesÆ perceptions of job performance, job satisfaction, turnover intentions and absenteeism. The sample comprised 257 participants (108 males and 149 females) from a range of occupations and levels of seniority. In sum, the results clearly demonstrated that successful work-life balance is associated with higher levels of job performance and worker satisfaction and with decreased levels of absenteeism and turnover intentions. The data also lent support to the impact of employeesÆ coping styles, schedule flexibility and supervisor support on employeesÆ abilities to balance work and life. It is concluded that tangible benefits to an employerÆs bottom-line can be anticipated from organisational initiatives to assist employees to better balance their work and personal lives.

The underwater test is now being used routinely to characterise explosives and initiators. However, several outstanding issues regarding the role of confinement and the usefulness of the test results in predicting expected blasting performance require further elucidation. This paper reviews the underlying principles governing the test, and highlights its relative advantages and disadvantages in product development and applications. It deals with topics of energy release, energy partitioning, confinement and efficiency, supported by illustrative examples from tests with various products and geometries. The results are analysed in terms of both the detonation parameters measured and their extension to predicting blasting performance in the field. It is emphasised, that just as with other performance tests, the results and conclusions are only valid under the particular test conditions employed, and over-generalisation of these results can lead to erroneous conclusions.

The Warner Process has been devised to produce zinc metal directly from sulphide, thereby reducing the requirements for purchase of large amounts of energy in a special form. The process conditions for a practical process have been evaluated in an extensive program of research and development at the University of Birmingham. Recorded data now exists to take the process forward to commercial use within the next five years. The industrial economics have been evaluated. The cost of making zinc metal from zinc sulphide ore can be substantially lowered due to the reduced energy cost, locating zinc production in the neighbourhood of the mines and increasing ore to metal recoveries - particularly for fine-grained and pyritic ore. Integration of a Warner Furnace with a zinc mine and concentrator can result in a highly attractive return on capital Invested.

Portman Mining Pty Ltd very successfully operated the Ferro GullyNorth Mine in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia to satisfy a contract for the delivery of six million tonnes of iron ore in less than two years to the Mount Newman Mining Co Pty Ltd. The high-grade ore extracted from Ferro Gully North Mine was unusual in that, not only was it within the Joffre Member of the Brockman Formation, but it was rich in red ochreous hematite and martite and very low in phosphorus.

Potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock contained in dumps formed as a result of open cut mining of metalliferous orebodies are conventionally sealed or covered using a near-saturated, low permeability compacted clay layer, protected with a mulch layer and/or vegetated growth medium. The purpose of the compacted clay layer is to limit oxygen diffusion and the infiltration of rainfall into the dump. Where the aerial extent of the PAF waste rock dump is large, or where suitable clayey material is in short supply, it may be difficult to source sufficient suitable clayey material to form the cover. The paper describes a laboratory-based investigation of combining inert waste rock and tailings to form an alternative seal or cover material. The inert waste rock was sourced from the trafficked surface of a non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock dump, with a maximum particle size of about 100 mm. This was combined with NAF thickener underflow tailings slurry in various mass ratios, and the resulting mixtures tested for their particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, soil water characteristics (relationship between suction and volumetric moisture content), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The mixtures tested ranged in consistency from those dry enough to be compactable, to those with the consistency of wet concrete that lend themselves to placement without the need for compaction. The laboratory test results showed that the suitability of the mixtures as seal or cover materials is very dependent on the particle size distribution of the mixture, with well-graded mixtures having substantial fines performing best.

Construction of Western Mining Corporation's nickel refinery at Kwinana, Western Australia, commenced in July, 1968. Production of 15,000 tons per annum of refined nickel metal will commence early in 1970, The plant will also produce approx- imately 150,000 tons of ammonium sulphate0 The ammonia leach process which was developed by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., and has been in operation at their plant at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, for the past 15 years, will be used at Kwinana. The refinery will cost approximately 435 million, and will employ upwards of 250 people.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

The lateral and vertical distributions of gold and a wide range of other elements in the regolith, close to Au and Cu mineralisation have been investigated at Goonumbla, NSW. Open cut mining has exposed deeply weathered profiles which have been used for this investigation. Determination of secondary mineralogy and micromorphology of profiles have facilitated the broad interpretation of processes that determine element mobility and dispersion from primary mineralisation as a result of weathering. This in turn has led to better interpretation of geochemical data and enhanced understanding and knowledge of regolith geochemical processes which are invaluable in the formulation of improved exploration Procedures.
