Pellets were produced from carefully sized iron ore and silica sand fractions, under controlled moisture conditions, using a sealed balling drum. The strength of these pellets was measured as a function of moisture content and particle size. The results showed that the strength of the pellets could be adequately described by a model which equates the strength of the pellets with the negative pressure developed within the porous mass, provided that the particle size distribution was narrow and the mean particle size relatively large. The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

Detailed mapping in the Permian-Triassic clastic sediments of the Southern Alps delineates a number of strike-slip faults, both dextral and sinistral, associated with the major Alpine Fault to the west and displacing a tight array of fault blocks. Concurrent steeply plunging folds are deforming early major folds of probable Cretaceous age, and generating schist locally. To the east a major collapse zone has developed along the crest of a Cretaceous anticline, located over an ancient Permian submarine scarp, with a number of small normal faults. Further east, extensive Carboniferous to Triassic rocks of much the same appearance are exposed as horsts and grabens in a large possible extension zone through central and east Canterbury. This may have crept incrementally from Cretaceous from the offshore Bounty Trough to reach the eastern margins of the Southern Alps in the Pleistocene.

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities.

A study on the feasibility of mining the recently discovered Wallaby gold deposit is due for completion by mid-2000. Open pit mining is the favoured method. Determination of the impact of mining bench height on the recovery of ore, including the estimation of dilution and ore loss, is critical to the economics of the operation. Conditional simulation was used to derive a number of gold estimation scenarios within a typical volume of the deposit. These scenarios were interrogated for a selection of mining bench heights and ore block dimensions. The results were reported as a range of grade tonnage relationships and compared to the kriged resource model. This allowed the resource model to be calibrated to a specific mining bench height and ore block size. Once calibrated, more realistic dilution and ore loss values for a number of mining bench heights were calculated from the resource model. These values were then used to determine the economic sensitivity of particular mining methods. The spread of results from the simulations also provided an indication of the confidence in the kriged grade estimates for the different zones of mineralisation within the deposit and highlighted areas of any significant uncertainty.

The Cumnock Open Cut Mine (COCM) is located in the Hunter coalfield in New South Wales. Five coal seams are being mined, mostly by drilling and blasting, loaders and excavators, and trucks. The annual production of coal is 1.3 million tonnes. Overburden and interburdens consist mostly of siltstones and medium to thickly bedded sandstones. The strata dip to the south-east at approximately four degrees. There are no major faults in the rock mass.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

A trial of an Adept Online Ore Sizer (OOS) was undertaken at the WMC Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO) in the first half of 2000. During this time the On Line Ore Sizer has been shown to be a robust and accurate instrument for measuring mill feed ore size. Data collected during the trial indicates significant variation in the F80 of the SAG mill feed. The effects of feed size on milling parameters such as mill weight, mill power draw and mill efficiency appears to be dependent on the ore blend treated. With some ore blends a weak positive correlation was found between ore size and mill weight and milling efficiency but with others no correlation is evident. It is believed that the OOS will become a vital piece of equipment in the future as LNO continues to optimises its milling circuit.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

ABSTRACT' Mainland Papua New Guinea is formed of a microcontinental / island arc system (?Eocene - latest Oligocene Sepic arc) which in Middle to Late Miocene times was obducted over the northward- moving Australian plate. The sedimentary and volcanic units of this system form part of the Wogamush Group (Aure beds, Mena beds, Omaura Formation, Movi beds, Wogamush beds, Wogamush Formation. Nansananka Conglomerate and other correlates in- eluding cale-alkaline volcanics and carbonate beds). This Sepic event was followed in Pliocene-Present times by the obduction of the Finisterre-Adelbert-Oenake fore-arc or possibly oceanic plateau. Acclaimed as one of the most remarkable orebodies anywhere on account of its length and richness, the Oroya Shoot occurs on the eastern side of the Kalgoorlie gold mining district close to the contact of a fine-grained with a coarse-grained greenstone, and in association with sediments. In the same stratigraphic position on the synclinal flanks of a large drag fold there are a number of other flat ore pipes, smaller, but almost as rich in tenor. Although differing in control structure they are believed to be related genetically as all show a characteristic development of a bright-green ore known locally as "green leader". Folding and bedding structures have played an important part in formation of the ore shoots.INTRODUCTIONThe Oroya Shoot is the biggest individual bonanza of Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. It has been stoped almost continuously over a length of 4,300 ft., and about 2,000,000 oz. of gold have been won from it. Naturally pillars are not left in the best sections of such an orebody and the detailed geology of stoped out portions can only be inferred from examination of adjacent workings.No mention is made in the literature of the actual makeup of the orebody although a few structures are shown on some of the old cross sections. A diagrammatic cross section, Fig. 1, adapted from Stillwell (1929) illustrates the form of the Oroya Shoot.Gustafson (1937) drew attention to the role of folding, previously unrecognized, in Kalgoorlie geology, and indicated that the Oroya Shoot is associated with a minor drag fold on the east limb of the Brownhill Syncline, itself part of a larger left hand drag on the Central Anticline. The latter in turn appears to be part of a regional right hand fold system as shown by Campbell (1953).

What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed? Finding the best circuit to crush and grind minerals to beneficiation sizes is a complex problem that can lead to interminable discussion. Conclusions reached can be questioned. This will continue as long as the technology of comminution continues to expand, and is a mixture of many technical and economic factors in what is not a precise science. Laboratory and pilot plant procedures now exist that can help process engineers make sound decisions on which circuits are the best for crushing and grinding the specific ore being studied. It is the aim of this paper to discuss such procedures so a better under- standing of key decision parameters is avail- able, and to update comminution testing which has seen a. period of change in which new procedures have been introduced.

The Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.

On 23 May 1977 the Hon Mr George Gair announced an amalgamation of the present Ministry of Energy Resources, the New Zealand Electricity Department and the Mines Department. Hopefully it will prove to be the solution of many national problems in energy planning and policy making, in energy distribution and use, and energy discovery and production. The name of this new giant is the Ministry of Energy which gives a firm indication of its future direction. For those amongst us involved with mineral energy resources the establishment of this new department must be encouraging. For those amongst us who are involved in non-energy side of the mineral industry it is the very opposite. The loss of the Mines Department a year short of its centenary is a loss for the mineral industry without a doubt - but how much of a loss?

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

In the mineral processing industry solid-liquid separation within a thickener usually requires the addition of a synthetic flocculant to enhance the settling rate of fine particles. The characteristics of the resulting flocculated suspensions may vary considerably depending upon the physical and chemical conditions which prevail during the flocculation process. For example, parameters such as flocculant type, dosage and solution concentration, surface chemical characteristics of particles and the suspension agitation conditions can influence the degree to which the particles aggregate. Aggregated suspensions exhibit various structures, and range from those composed of small, dense aggregates to those containing large, voluminous aggregates. The size distribution and structural type of the aggregates which form within the feed-well of a thickener can have a dramatic effect upon overall thickener performance. Thickener performance cannot be optimized without optimization of the aggregate structure produced in the feed by synthetic flocculant addition. This has required the development of new techniques to quantify the nature of aggregated suspensions, details of which are presented in this paper.
